Hello ASL Heroes!!! Hey, if you are in a position to, I could really use your help. If you’ve enjoyed having access to an expert in ASL you can help me continue my work for you. A small monthly donation from you would instantly make a big difference here at the studio because teachers don’t earn much and I could use some help paying for server and domain hosting for Lifeprint.com. Right now you can help out a humble (not to mention kind, caring, generous, compassionate, helpful, friendly, fair, and hard-working) ASL teacher -- just go here and a few clicks later you too will be a true “ASL Hero!” www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=64QMBRBXQSV6G Thanks! - Dr. Bill p.s. Want to have your very own USB drive with four semesters worth of ASL videos (that’s the equivalent of two years of colleges classes) for just $79.95? See "SuperUSB" in the ASLUniversity bookstore at: lifeprint.com/bookstore/bookstore.htm Take care and love to you all. :)

Thank you SO MUCH Bill Vicars!! You are a Godsend! My daughter was born H/H so I've been trying to learn as much ASL as possible (she's 3 and prefers signing to speech thus far). You make it really fun to learn and you've had such a tremendously positive effect in our lives...Idk if you ever read this stuff, but just wanted to say, we are so appreciative!! and thank you!! :)

You are an incredible teacher Dr. Vicars. The touch of humor makes it all so fun to learn. I couldn't stop laughing when you scared your student and the other time when you said you would be dead after walking 4 hours. HA HA HA ;)

anyone else notice that the student is such a good person. She had hard time remembering signs that had a negative connotation (ex afraid, embarrassed, mean...) Find that really cool. Bill your an Awesome instructor but beyond that a great judge of character all your students(in front of the camera) have been interesting and full of life people. so thank you and your students.

Jason, your observation regarding the relative difficulty of recalling a "negative" concept vs a "positive" concept is fascinating. You are indeed right that Sarah is a good person. Even when she had little sleep or was sick she STILL showed up because she refused to leave me hanging or scrambling at the last moment to find a replacement. She was/is amazing.

Bill, my son is a homeschooler (pre-covid and by choice), and I had to talk him into taking sign language. But he's learning so much from your videos that he is IN LOVE with signing now! I'm hoh and wish so badly I'd had this resource as a kid. We're now learning together as a family, including my 18-month-old. We're all getting your t-shirts for Christmas. Thanks so much for sharing your curriculum with the world!

Here in Sacramento there is an ASL hiking group (via Facebook: "Sacramento Deaf & ASL Hiking") that (Bee and) I like to meet-up with every once in a while and go hiking for a few hours. I really enjoy both the exercise and the social aspect. Plus for the next few days after hiking I get to enjoy that wonderful bit of soreness that lets me know I'm still alive, have built a bit of muscle, and ought to do that sort of thing more often.

In regards to book names (or movie/tv shows) would you sign the words that have signs or would you finger spell the whole title? Is this also a case where you would finger spell words like "be" "is" etc..
@sign-language
@sign-language 3 жыл бұрын
It is going to vary widely and wildly! I can tell you that "I" often use a mixture of signs and spelling when discussing book names and / or titles. I know my wife does too (cuz, ahem, I live with her and we discuss books and movies quite a bit). For example I sign STAR and spell "wars." If I recall right, I've seen her sign book titles using "signs" when she feels like it. For example for "Secret Garden" I think she signs SECRET and then either spells garden or signs GROW. Also, if a word isn't essential in a title -- quite often it is simply dropped. For example the word "the." If a title is "The Secret Garden" -- we might just sign SECRET fs-GARDEN and drop the "the" altogether. If the other person still understands what book or movie we are discussing -- it is okay to not sign every little word in a title-- unless you are in some situation where you are mapping to English. Again though just because one expert tells you something regarding the use of signs in titles -- doesn't mean you are going to get consensus.

Any tips for getting involved with the deaf community in your local area? In my case this would be Nevada? Dr Vicars continuously says "the only way to become fluent is to interact with deaf people IRL." But I don't know anyone who is deaf or HOH. I have no idea how to get started.
