I also came from a Metal background and got into Kpop so now I love both. I'm 53 so I started out with Queensryche, Metallica, Megadeth back in the day and today I love Ice Nine Kills, Bad Omens, MCR, Motionless in White. I love too many Kpop bands to mention. LOL. It's more than possible to love both. And I know Kpop fans in their 50's, 60's, 70's...so any age as well. I have Kpop friends of all ages...20's to 60's.

Changbin sounding "Canadian" was not something I expected to hear, especially as he doesn't speak English fluently and the members who do are Australian 😆. Thanks for reacting to SKZ, it's always fun to see people discovering them for the first time! Also, if you enjoy punk and metal, you may like Xdinary Heroes -- they're a k-band with a phenomenal lead guitarist and drummer and two extraordinary vocal powerhouses, and their concept is dark pop-punk. They're under the same company as Stray Kids and have done a cover of one of SKZ's songs (as well as a couple of English rock covers that are excellent).

I like how knowledgeable she is about kpop and the groups themselves. I've been listening to BTS since 2015 and I totally agree with you with what you said. I listen to stray kids' self produced music and that's what made me a big fan of them, but I'm also glad to see that you're very well informed about them ( here another fan of Chan and the demonic voice of the adorable Felix hahah). I don't see many people talking this way about this industry or groups in general and the immense differences they have with western music. Loved the reaction! Hope to see other k-pop reactions!

This song is what got me into K-pop!! Stray Kids are my guys! They are amazing performers and singers (I know you mentioned autotune and I get the snide attitude about it. But I assure you they can all sing beautifully live.) They write and produce all of their own music. Their concerts are amazing and they perform with a live band on stage. I am not a teenybopper and I've seen a lot bands over the years...but not a one blew me away like these guys did when I saw them live back in June. Just phenomenal!

You should use the subtitles next time! They're completely accurate and it would make the music video make a lot more sense. And add a lot more depth to what you're hearing as stray kids love wordplay. Oh and actually 2 of the members are native English speakers (australian), 2 more are fluent from living in English speaking countries for a while(usa and malaysia) and another is studying English in college (also lived in nevada as a kid) so you'll hear a lot of english in their songs. They even have english versions of their songs that are amazing and translate perfectly because of this.

Subtitles. I promise you the experience will be SO much better if you know what they're saying. SKZ are famous for their lyricism. This entire song (and its album) is a clapback against the hate they receive for their sound, and the lyrics demonstrate the message beautifully (and snarkily). As she said, bits of English get mixed into kpop frequently, and it's basically to not only engage with foreign audiences, but also because (and this is directly from multiple Koreans) using English is seen as "cool" among younger Koreans. Just like monolingual English-speaking Americans will drop the occasional word/phrase in Spanish or French or Japanese or whatever, same goes for dropping bits of English in Korea. However, there's also the fact that SKZ comprises two native-English-speaking Australians (one of whom is one of the three main writers/composers/producers), a Korean member who is fluent in English, two highly conversational members (one of whom is one of the three main writers/composers/producers), two who understand pretty much everything and are improving steadily in their speaking (one of whom is one of the three main writers/composers/producers), and one who's not quite as strong as the others and isn't interested in pursuing it hardcore but nonetheless can do enough to communicate. So the lyrics are being written by a native English speaker, a highly conversational speaker with an ear for slang and wordplay, and a functional speaker with an ear for slang and wordplay. There's more English -- and more accurate and well-used English -- in SKZ songs than there is in most kpop groups'. Rather than just sprinkling it in for flavor, they use it as a tool for puns and other forms of wordplay, for emphasis, for expressing things that won't fit the flow well if spoken in Korean, etc. They even use it to dual-title some songs, one in English and one in Korean, to complete wordplay or make a message. Thunderous is a good example. Because while "Thunderous" is the English title, the Korean title -- Sorikkun -- does _not_ mean Thunderous. It's a type of traditional Korean folk singer known for their loud, rhythmic style, and the actual word can be broken down to mean along the lines of "noise master." SKZ were making a very clear statement with this clapback song, and combining the connotation of "thunderous" with the connotation of "traditional masters of noise" in the dual title was part of that statement.

SKZ is very unique in their approach… they were chosen(hand picked by their leader (orange hair) their company had nothing to do with their final preparation to debuted, additionally, they write produce arrange etc… their own music-the Autotune u mention is used as more of an instrumental element because they have such gorgeous voices and Chan likes to use it.. This song (actually the entire album) is a clap back to haters.

I agree with the BTS thing only a little bit because they said themselves that they had their storyline and everthing planned only until early 2020 and than they wanted to fullfill their military service, but corona happened and they wanted to release a fun summer song to make other people happy and because it was succesfull they continued, but it wasn´t their sound, they always participed or fully produced their own songs and albums, but the english singles were fully written by other people. Also after 2021 they returned to their roots and now are releasing songs which they indetify with again, they are also on hiatus rn, because they are focusing more on solo projects and are meant to fullfil their millitary service. But BTS success is definetely not based on dynamite, their earlier songs is what made them famous and made them stand out. Even though I stan a lot of kpop groups, BTS definetely have a special place in my heart, both with their songs and their personalities.

the bts thing u said ... i am little bit disappointed cause they didnt release dynamite to get nominated for grammys or to gain popularity in the states . they did to encourage ppl who were facing hell in 2020 covid pandemic . it was a fun song created to encourage people and the armys . but they themselves didnt knew dynamite was gonna blow off real quick. i wish ppl to consider other perspectives before judging...

LOVE that she got you started off with Stray Kids. They've gotten me so deep into Korean culture since discovering them. I feel they truly are that bridge between Eastern/Western music, without forgetting their roots. Not to mention they write/produce 99.99% of their discography and they're KIDS! There are honestly so many songs in both Stray Kids AND BTS' discography that are highly deserving of Grammys, from a lyrical, technical (like mastering & mixing), compositional, and overall creative standpoint, not including how well they've charted and copies they've sold. It's really frustrating that so many of both group's phenomenal, meaningful, well-crafted songs aren't given recognition by the western industry. Music transcends language and borders. Edit: and thankfully, BTS did create a beautiful Korean album (BE) right after Dynamite that a lot of people seem to forget about, and their anthology album PROOF included Run BTS, which I personally consider their best song since Map of the Soul: 7 and a song that feels truly, unabashedly Bangtan and harkens back to their grungier, more badass style that I love so much. Yet To Come was also lovely but man, Run BTS felt like such a return to form for BTS and I'm happy for them.

Stray Kids musicality in dance and video editing is off the charts. Coming from the metal world, you might like to check out Venom, Side Effects, Easy or Domino. If you want to hear them take some grunge riffs and incorporate them, you could listen to Beware or Yayaya, off their very first (pre-debut) release--Beware has a dance performance video, Yayaya does not have a real video. For other kpop groups, check out Hip from Mamamoo, or Tomboy, Nxde, Oh My God from (G)Idle, (those two are both "girl" ie grown women groups) or Gambler, Love Killa from Monsta X, or Sticker, Firetruck, Birthday (Make a Wish) from various subsets of NCT. (NCT has a weird concept of a huge master group with several sub groups, membership is somewhat fluid between sub groups). When you do eventually listen to BTS, I'd recommend Mic Drop (Steve Aoki remix), Ugh, Burning Up (Fire) or On. By the way, Stray Kids use even more English than some kpop groups because two members--the leader and deep voiced Felix--are Aussies, two others lived in the US for brief periods and one lived in Malaysia where English is more commonly spoken. If you are interested in their more vocal work, check out the First Take versions of Scars, Mixtape: OH, and Slump. That's them singing live in a Japanese recording studio that releases the one (first) take. These are not ballads, they are just more focused on the vocals than the rap. I also highly recommend turning on subtitles, Stray Kids and many other Kpop groups often have meaningful lyrics. Stray Kids also often release sub-unit songs, the most are by the production sub-unit, that is the three members who have a hand in writing/composing/producing over 90% of their output (they are super collaborators but have final artistic say). That unit is called 3Racha, and focuses on hard-driving hip hop and rap; Han and Changbin are on pretty much all the "Top 10 rappers in kpop" lists you can find. There are also releases from DanceRacha (the three members who are the most in charge of dancing) and VocalRacha, the two members who sing the most. They also release many many combinations of subunits, solos, duets, some other trios, some with four members. They are extraordinarily prolific and versatile. For most of these, you need to get color coded lyrics videos, since they don't have MVs. I really recommend Heyday, 3Racha and Zone by 3Racha, Taste by DanceRacha, Redlights by a duo subset, or Muddy Water by the main rapline.

Not sure how you managed to miss the amazing album "Be"! The song "Life goes on" was amazing as was "Disease" and "Blue and Grey" and "Film out" and "Stay"-all from that album...all very much typical BTS creativity being alive and well. Dynamite, Butter, and PTD, were deliberate choices to produce feel good music in response to the difficulties of the pandemic. For which we should just thank them and their willingness to postpone their own desires in order to put some joy into the world. Love you trying out K-pop.

To answer your question more thoroughly, Kpop doesn't add English lines and lyrics in their songs just to make it big in the U.S. They add English to their songs, which is usually primarily in the hook or chorus of the song, in order to appeal to a more international adienance. Afterall, English is the most spoken first or second language in the most countries in the world. (English isn't only spoken in the U.S. or the west.) Therefore, by putting English in the song it allows everyone to be able to sing along and for the song to get stuck in your head, even if you don't speak Korean. This allows them to reach an even wider audience and helps to create larger fanbases, which drives album and merchandise sales, gives them more places to hold world concert tours and fan meetings, and also increases viewership of their other projects, such as the TV shows and movies that some of the members are actors in, etc.

First of all BTS did not come out with dynamite to win a grammy, they did not sold them themselves out. They wasn't even planing on coming out with dynamite, but they did it because they wanted to give give something to the Armys for who was having a hard time in corona. get your facts together

I'm an armystay (bts and stray kids fan) and it's amazing to appreciate the differences within kpop, no group is the same as the other and that's what makes everything special for me, That's why I found all the fandom fighting out there quite unnecessary, if you don't appreciate a song just don't listen to it. I'm the same as you and enjoy the music both BTS and Stray Kids make. I also took pause when she said that BTS sold out when making that song. I'm not as knowledgeable as BTS fans are about them but I do remember BTS saying as soon as the song came out that they released Dynamite with the intention of cheering up their fans during this hard time while the coronavirus was going around. It's unfortunate that I do foresee some immature fans using Monica's words to create more fodder for fanwars between music groups. I just wish people were less competitive against each other and just appreciate the groups for who they are. Hopefully, Monica gets shown some comments correcting that thought so she doesn't accidentally anger some fans. I do appreciate her trying her best to explain more of the Kpop scene for Jeffrey. She's very cute in her enthusiasm.

I guess I'm diff to others in some ways, but I like ppl reacting to the MV without the subtitles & then they rewatch with the subtitles to understand what they just watched. I love watching reactions but get frustrated when there's a clear drop about to happen & reactors pause it, not all. But when they do it, it takes away from the whole experience imo. Not everyone will see the same as me, although I do see other comments that are similar so there's an audience for that type of experience. Some reactors tailor it & mention at the start of their videos that they will react without subtitles & then rewatch with. Some are so shocked & can't help but pause not to miss the next part 😂😂😂. ok I'm sorry but that was a load of bs about Dynamite. It was never intended as a Grammy bait, it was literally a funky pandemic song like a Super tuna. Butter maybe, Permission to dance totally but NOT Dynamite. Did the company push it after the fact? Yeah. But it was never the original intent and I don't know if you are malicious or just really uninformed but it's not a great look to educate others on issues you are clearly have no impartial knowledge. I'll be the first to admit that I'm WAAAAY older than the target demographic... but I do really enjoy Stray Kids. They are silly, funny, don't tend to take themselves seriously, and do a LOT of hard work on their choreo. I've taken various forms of dance for over 20 years and I know how much work it is to learn and remember those choreos for as long as they've been performing some of them. Stray Kids is sometimes a little too hiphop for my taste, but the ones that I enjoy, I enjoy immensely. For Felix's voice, I would respectfully disagree that he's underground... He's deep, but he's not underground yet. However, given that deep voices (with consistent practice) will continue to deepen over the years (to a point, of course), give him another 10 years or so, and his voice could be terrifying. (I'd really love to see him continue to work on deep singing techniques like growls and subharmonics.) If you want to see some additional range from the Kids, watch some of their subunit songs; Surfing, Gone Away, and Red Lights are all really good. (Red Lights is my favorite of the videos because you want absolutely stunning cinematography, it's RIGHT THERE. The storytelling of JUST the cinematography is beyond stunning.) (Edited to add that Hyunjin and Bang Chan wrote Red Lights, helped design both the choreography and the overall looks that they wanted for the music video. Just as some background there.)

BTS Dynamite was meant to be a fun summer song to enjoy for a season, I dont think they sold themselves to get a grammy. Yes BTS is way more deep and brings things to the forefront that are hard to talk about and deal with.

bts never "sold themselves" to the grammys. they were going to take a break after not doing well mentally but instead released dynamite during covid just to bring some joy to their fans during hard times that's why the song is bright and different to what they usually do and it was uplifting to hear when everything else on tv was grim, they put aside their own needs to be there for their fans. there's no need to bring up this situation if you don't know anything about it and anyway i don't understand why you even had the need to mention and critizice bts when this is a stray kids video? put me off the whole reaction

(I know this is from a long time ago but...) Too sensitive for no reason. They were very nice about explaining what happened. And in fact, also put the blame where it should be - on the Western/American music industry/standards. You all are taking it as a shot at BTS when it's really not. All of Kpop is trying in some ways to capture the Western audience. BTS just did what they had to do to get that fully. But as an American I'll say that it's so effing sad that they had to do that to get the recognition they deserved. If we weren't so damn arrogant and smug thinking that "only we know what good music is," then other international artists could get their much earned respect here. If nothing else, what BTS did may actually be the thing to get Kpop into the mainstream as is... It's yet to be fully seen tho. What needs to happen is for the rest of America/the Western audience to grow up, get over ourselves and the arrogant opinion that our music is superior.

Thank you for Thunderous. It is my favorite Stray Kids mv/song; MIROH is a close 2nd. What I really loved was how they incorporated Korean historical and modern styles. There are sports cars in front of the palace, Stray Kids wearing modern clothes and traditional hanboksin. They mixed Korean hiphop/trap music and traditional Korean musical instruments like the aak, & pungmul nori. The Bukcheong lion mask dance was/is used in celebrations, such as the Lunar New Year. Many of these items, traditions, etc. pop up in other Kpop music performances. Agust D (aka BTS's Suga) a stellar mv/song "Daechwita" was filmed at a set that is often used in Historical Kdramas.. it is fairly identical to the actual ancient Palaces and villages found throughout Korea. In his video, he also used traditional Korean musical instruments and mixed cultural traditions like the Hanbok with cars & other modern things.

You should Make sure that the English Subtitles are on, so that you will know what the song is about and what the words are. He should also watch God's Menu, Christmas EveL, Easy, Venom and Maniac. Skz produce most of their songs.

This was very cool, I love to watch their dancing, I wish I could just put on some kind of button, when I hear a song I like so that I could sing with the song in the language they are singing!❤❤ My husband and I love watching Japanese Anime, there music is awesome! 😎 Most of what I have seen is with the series itself, not stand alone vids.Bubblegum Crises is great because one of the girls on the team is actually a singer in a band before they dress in their ‘bots’ type gear to fight justice! So they are shown a lot of times , ‘live’ playing many of the songs in the series! They also do some English in their songs! This is one of our favorite series, with subtitles always!😁. If you gravitate toward metal, punk, edm, dubstep, SKZ is likely going to be one of the best fits for you. While kpop is an industry, not a genre, there _is_ an established overall mainstream-approved sound, and SKZ tend be far outside of that sound, which is part of why they get so much hate and aren't domestically popular. That is, in fact, directly related to this song and its album (again, all of it a clapback because of the constant hate for being "noisy," making "construction music," and whatnot). They have an extremely varied discography, so there's plenty that's _not,_ say, edm or trap or dubstep, but even then, it doesn't tend to veer into the popular bubblegum lane. The one time they used that type of mainstream bubblegum sound, once, deliberately, they interspersed it with their signature hard-hitting, dark sound to convey the light vs dark, emotion vs reason message (STAYs know which song I mean). So there's no one kpop sound, but yeah, there's an overall general style that tends to be the majority of mainstream kpop. And then there's outsider groups like SKZ, who are known for literally making their own genre and making what they want even though it's not in line with the approved middle ground. They've straight-up made songs that they knew would be polarizing and unpopular with a lot of people, simply because those were songs they wanted to make and stories they wanted to tell ("Side Effects" and "Tortoise and the Hare" are good examples of this).

Actually including English to to lyrics is part of the culture because K-pop started developing after the war in Korea and the occupation of American in Korea. The society was highly influenced by the music imported by the Americans and from the beginning included it to their song. I hope I explained it well English isn’t my first language. @@JeffreyHackReacts The strange rhythm was actually an allusion to a traditional Korean performance art called pansori. Changbin made it into a rap. You can hear traditional instruments in the track as well. Seems like plenty of others have reminded y'all 😅 but the lyrics are important, especially for a rap heavy group like Stray Kids who write and produce their own art. There's old Korean sayings in the rap, and everything is geniously incorporated. Also, Stray Kids uses more English than usual because 2 of the members are Australian. And, a couple more studied abroad and gained proficiency. I recommend discussing the actual video you're reacting to a bit more in your reactions moving forward. There was lots of talk about other things not related to Stray Kids at all 😅 Best of luck!

I know what you mean about the MV helps to make the song more epic. Eg: Hallazia by Ateez by itself is a good song, but the MV makes it more epic. Once you have listened to more Kpop, you will discover their sounds are different to a lot of other Kpop groups. Cheers

As a general rule of thumb, if you aren't offending anybody you're not doing your job properly - there are people who will complain about anything/everything and they should not be allowed to influence honest reactions. The use of english in K-Pop may be influenced by the American market being the world's biggest for music, with the rest of the countries where english is spoke natively, or as a second or third (many countries teach several at school). The Japanese market is the second biggest - several K-Pop groups also perform in japanese - the world's biggest girl group, BLACKPINK, actually release all their songs in two versions - a korean-english version and a korean-japanese version with some re-working of the lyrics (they are all fluent korean, english, and japanese spekers with another 4 or 5 languages between them from fluent to basic depending on the member!) You can easily pick out the two Aussie members of SK by their accent 😉
