The American standard shower valve cartridge is 2 pieces. The front part is the temperature/volume control, and the part inside the valve body is the pressure balance cartridge. It's usually the pressure balance cartridge that is causing the problem.

Yep. Always replace them as a pair. They are inexpensive and will remain trouble free for another 15-20 years.

Glad you turned the water heater down. Someone could get burned easy with that new valve. I set mine around 110-120. I would not set any over 140; that would be up to the customer to do that.

Probably ask the customer before you do it, no? I'm a customer and I set mine to the highest level. 4 kids and 2 adults never have to worry about running out of hot water after multiple showers. I'd be a little irritated if someone changed mine without asking.

I'd spray vinegar into that brass casing and use a toothbrush to remove all the calcium before installing the new valve...

Search for: American Standard M961810-0020A (for trim and handle escutcheon) American Standard 060285-0020A(for plate to hide screw holes, had to slice off some nubs on this guy and caulk it to the trim) American Standard M962160-0020A (handle)

This is the cartridge I have looks easy enough to do but I am running into the problem of a rusted stripped screw on mine. Any tips how I can get this off? Should I try using a drill to drill it out?

What about spraying some vinegar in that cartridge hole while you're out picking up the part? Would that help to knock out some of that grit inside?

Exactly what i did. Vinegar and water in a spray bottle followed by scraping out the melted minerals. Repeated about a dozen times and it worked. The part almost slid out!

This video would have been a gold mine if we were told what the part number was of the new pressure balancing unit. This American Standard brass rough in valve that housed the PBU and faucet cartridge is no longer available and is becoming a rarity. One can tell by the escutcheon wall plate having its screw locations located at 10 & 2 o'clock. All the new valve bodies have clocking angles of 10 & 4 or 9 & 3. These replacement parts are inexpensive and the faucet cartridge that is stacked on the PBU should have been replaced at the same time. I am assuming the part numbers of the two parts were 051091-0070A for the pressure balancing unit and 023529-0070A for the faucet cartridge.

crappy american standard temp balance cartridge design.the little screens inside get clogged and they are only as big as a pencil eraser. couple big o rings are all that keep the mixing body from leaking and they always leak after you get a year or two on the fixture and it carbonates up. i finally yanked this piece of junk out of a rental and went with a moen posi temp. smartest 1.5 hrs in the last year for me! anyone that buys this needs to get a shrink involved. if you dont hang a bath towel over it and blow the lines while the cartridge is out you will be back in 3 months.

i always go with symmons temptrol valves....i am in mass about 1 hour from steve and most guys up here swear by them unless customer wants something else..
