Your video is very clear and helpful, it would be excellent if you told your viewers how to find or locate the cartridge part number in order to buy a new one, or if the part number is located on the damaged cartridge if they cannot find it, remember some of these valves could be quite old, or home owners may not have any information on the product that needs repair. thanks.

In your opinion, is it wise to turn the water back on before installing the outer plate so that you can see if there are any leaks before concealing everything? I'm paranoid about doing the repair and then having a leak behind the wall that I can't see. Thanks for your help. This is a great video!

It certainly wouldn't hurt, especially if it would ease your anxiety about a leak in the wall. Once the valve is secure, you should be good to turn the water back on and confirm there are not any leaks.

Better check for any leakage before putting all the trim on.... I've had brand new balancing spools & cartridges damaged and they leaked. Also I've had the cartridge leak if it wasn't tightened "evenly" or if it was overtightened / under tightened.

Hi, thanks for the video. One comment regarding removing the handle. After trying quite a while to find an allen wrench that fit I was eventually lucky enough to have the handle come off and found that there was no allen screw...it was a standard flat head screw. I imagine this is due to the unit being fairly old.

That may not be an original screw, but glad you figured it out!

I had to replace that because the shower head was dripping. First tried replacing the front cartridge, didn't help. The pressure cartridge is cheaper... 20 bucks at home Depot versus 30 for the front cartridge.

Try turning it, pulling it etc to see if you can get it to line up.

Without seeing it, it’s hard to say, but is it possible that when you put the balancing unit in you put it upside down? The two holes should be on the bottom and the center hole on the top.

@@KentonKnows yes, the balancing unit is in there correctly. Because I'm not getting water to flow through, I tested without adding the cartridge to make sure water was indeed coming through the balancing unit and it does. It is after I add the cartridge and then turn the water back on that it isn't working. Not sure if the part is defective or I'm missing something when installing the cartridge. I'm dumbfounded!

You can replace only one, but I always replace them both since I have the water off and I opened everything up.

What if my shower is making a knocking or banging noise in the pipes by the valve? It doesn't happen when it's all the way hot, or all the way cold. It only starts when we try to get a mix/warm water. Could this be the shower cartridge or the pressure balance unit or both? Or something else...?

Could be that you need to install water hammer arrestors or your pipes may not be secure and they are moving and hitting the wall. You’ll probably need to open the wall (front or back side) to correct either of those issues.

@@KentonKnows it's a four family house and the hammering noise coming only from that one fixture. After watching your video I got brave enough to open the shower faucet and took it apart and before put it back together I took photos of the parts and purchased replacement parts in Home Depot. On Monday I'll try to replace it and will let you know of the outcome.

If any part of the balancing unit breaks, you'll need to ensure all parts are fully removed before installing the new parts so it is clear as I show in the video. If you asking about the brass ring, I have that part listed in the description as well if you need to replace it.

What keeps water from the shower head falling onto the handle, entering the cartridge enclosure and draining into the wall? I'm on my 2nd model, looks like a defective design.

The caps and covers before you put the handle on should keep water out the cartridge enclosure. I have these at a lot of properties and haven’t ever seen the issue you are describing. It’s mostly likely that it wasn’t installed properly if that is happening.

i have the same cartridge and needed to change it because the water was only warm so i got one on amazon and put it together and its still warm.....when i went under the sing to shut the water off or on to the tub/shower.. i noticed the cold valve turned on both hot and cold with the cartridge in but with the white head piece off ... is the deep set cartridge mixing water prior to the control ?

Hmmm, not sure without seeing it in person. I’d be very surprised if you got a bad unit, but it is possible.

It may be that the whole house's water pressure is too high. It can happen. Try lowering the pressure on the cold supply by slightly turning the main cold water supply shut off valve to the house and see if the leaking stops.
