Danish person here: The reason people think highly of you studying to become a teacher is because we know what a difficult profession it can be. And because it is so massively important for our society. Good luck Maya, I really hope you end up loving it.
@Hetziness2 ай бұрын
I ran into Maya on the bus to Århus, she was very pleasant to talk to and very nice. I didn't know that she was studying to become a teacher. Like the other Danes they mentioned I am also grateful for any new teachers we can get. I was myself a teacher but decided to change career. For me personally it was very stressful to be a teacher and the job was also quite ungrateful, students and parents can be very rude and I often had a feeling that people didn't admire or respect what did as a teacher, as if it is something easy that anyone can do. However there were also many positive experiences when you had connections with students and felt like they appreciated you and what you were doing. That's my experience but I don't want to discourage others from becoming a teacher because they might be better at dealing with those things than me and teachers are so important for our society. I just wish the rest of society would value and appreciate it as highly. I wish Maya the best of luck with becoming a teacher, I am sure she will do great.

ChatGPT: A professional bachelor's degree (or professionsbachelor in Danish) is a higher education qualification that combines academic study with practical training, preparing students for specific careers. It typically lasts for three to four years and includes internships or hands-on learning experiences in fields such as nursing, teaching, engineering, social work, or business. Unlike a traditional academic bachelor's degree, which is more theory-focused, a professional bachelor's degree is designed to equip students with both the theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed for specific professions. This type of degree is common in many European countries and often allows graduates to enter the workforce immediately upon completion or continue with further studies if desired. Good luck!

It can be a stressfull job as far as i know, i was a substitute teacher for a year, and being around young people all day requires a decent amount of patience! I think that the majority of teachers i've had throughout my life, has been people who really cared, and wanted to help form good people, which is why i respect that line of work so much! Teaching is something that is always needed, especially in our current environment, and it is something I'm sure you will be good at, and have some interesting perspectives on, given your background. In regards to what term to use for your education, I would generally use university college or just college for any professionsbachelors programs and university for any academic bachelors programs. This is due to the term university being a protected title, only used by the 8 Danish universities.

Just to clear up the confusion. In Denmark (and Scandinavia) you are only in university if you go to a university and in Denmark there are only 8. KU, AU, AAU, SDU, RUC, ITU,DTU and CBS. The distinction is that you can only get a masters at University (with some odd ones out) and it is a science degree. As university is free in Denmark it is almost unheard of that you leave after getting your BA so for anyone who has attended university you can assume that they have a masters. I have a degree in English and History from KU, which means that I can technically teach High School and university level. I cannot teach folkeskole like what Maya is going to be, because it would demand a lot of subjects such as pedagogy, psychology and as others have said, practical experience. I have had one course and it is not even obligatory. I would need to get a teaching course on the side after acquiring a job as a teacher were I to ever get into teaching and none of it would ever make me fit to teach children XD

Nice to see you again too =) And Maya, well done - from a US kid to a Teacher in Denmark, thats an awesome educational journey. I hope you have thought about the "going abroad" part of the education and that you will grab the "challenge" and go abroad during your Bachelor. It does not have to be in the US, but i imagine that US could be rather fun, especially if you still have friends there and places you can stay =D The Bachelor is a Bachelor - but I dont think there is a Master connected to "professions bachelor", those are educations specifically for a trade/profession, such as teacher (for those reading and not Danish, preschool and kindergartens are called Pædagog and they have a different bachelor education) - but also the Police have a "professions bachelor", and nurses, just to showcase some. All of which are taught at a different school than university (a college for professions, which are found many more places in DK than Universities). Never the less they end up with a bachelor, but one that is not really connected to a masters or PHD* - to go that route you would have to go to university. *You can connect a masters to your bachelor - but you would have to know what master to strive for as some have specific claims to how these bachelors can connect - like if you want a maters in didactics (A way to teach - what, how and why) you would need a bachelor in Danish (Uni) or other literary bachelors from Uni OR if you wanna use your "professions bachelor" then you have to have had Danish as an elective (Maya has English) and a bachelor project (the end assignment) with relevance to Danish and/or didactics - Which means you can pass your "professions bachelor" and still not qualify for a master - you need to have relevance from your end project towards that master along the right electives to be considered. Where as in Uni, if you go for a bachelors in Danish, then you can "just" acces this masters... So yes - It is a bachelor - but no - it does not necessarily make one qualified for a masters unless you had that in mind from the get go and made the "right" electives and the "right aim" at your end project to be considered at that specific master (masters = kandidatuddannelser)

I started following this channel when i was still in university and i have a piece of advice. It is no secret we have a heavy drinking culture in denmark, and i have seen friends as well as myself having struggled with alcohol addiction as it over the years become such commonplace that you don't notice the issue until you try to quit. So be very mindful of University and alcohol. You are in university, we don't do "college & university" it is not seperate here. Proffesionsbachelor is most often distinguished by the fact that it is 1 semester longer than a regular bachelor and this semester is spent interning.

Congratulations of starting at one of our Professionshøjskoler! :) I am working at UCN in Aalborg, and we equate ourselfes more and more to the European counterparts e.g., hoch fachschule in Germany, as a University of Applied Sciences. This has also something to do that we are basing our educations more and more on research work, something that started around 10 years ago. Moverover, there will be significant changes to the roles of Proffesionshøjskoler in Denmark soon with the educational reforms which most likely will introduce level 7 educations.

A "professionsbachelor" is indeed very much like a Bachelor's, but is usually designed to prepare you for work immediately after by having more focus on practical stuff or by simply adding on to the classic Bachelor's stuff with something like full-time internship. Although you can definitely stop studying and go work after a normal bachelor's, it's more common to continue with a Master's afterwards if you want to specialize. I personally took a "professionsbachelor" (in engineering) which had slightly more focus on group work and projects than the Bachelor's counterpart, and added a semester of internship as well, making it 3½ years instead of 3. I ended up taking a Master's afterwards anyway, which also worked out completely fine.

Good to see you again. I guess that your resolution to volunteer at Roskilde this year came to nought, with Maya's graduation and everything. Things have changed so much since my time in school. Nobody would have considered a lærerseminarium equivalent to a university. My teachers, save maybe the very youngest, were not students. You could get into the seminarium with just a realeksamen. This was no longer the case when I finished school, and realeksamen was abolished altogether three years later, in 1978. My brother was one of the last realists. As far as I know, the vocational high schools are not considered the equivalent of a university even today. They do not grant masters degrees, which is what a university does.

Fantastic. Congrats! I'm sure you'll be an excellent English teacher, Maya. The Teacher Education is a really good programme. I just recently finished it myself (also with English as my primary subject, and I even used the same excellent book you have in the thumbnail). 😊 You're quite right that the names of the institutions and degrees are very confusing. In some ways, I would say that the "professionsbachelor" is at a higher level than a regular bachelor's degree since it is four years rather than three and officially qualifies you for a profession, which a bachelor's degree does not. At the end, the title conferred is "Bachelor of Education" (B.Ed.). Using the same word ("højskole") for two very very different types of institutions is a little silly, I agree. In case you're interested in a little etymology, the word comes from the German "Hochschule", which is a general term for institutions of higher education and also encompasses traditional universities. In Danish, it is only used for university-type institutions as a compound noun (such as "professionshøjskole" as you said, "journalisthøjskole", or "handelshøjskole"). Used on its own, it can only mean a traditional højskole (also called "folkehøjskole"). Nobody would say that they "går på højskole" or "studerer på højskole" and mean a university-type institution. I hope you have a great time at college/university/professionshøjskole! 😅

Kudos for following your ambition, despite the fact that professional bachelor isn't always recognised abroad. But that's most often something that you can explain your way through once you have a few years experience. And the Danish teacher's education isn't just some easy branch to pick up... you'll be a fully qualified pedagog and you'll know a whole bunch about psychology and conflict handling once you get your certificate. The salary may not exactly be fair compared to other educations here in DK, but it has a very high level of job security, because we urgently need teachers who have the patience to handle our spoiled kids. Best wishes!
@BenjaminVestergaard3 ай бұрын
History and religion may be considered yap subjects... To a native speaker English could be the same, but getting a grasp of the grammar/theory behind it might still be difficult. Because our kids are supposed to learn stuff like "I am, you are, he/she/it is... etc"... not least because in Danish it's a tad more simple: "jeg er, du er, han/hun/den/det er" our difficult grammar is somewhere else. Anyway, it's so important to choose subjects that you know well, and be motivated to be motivating... you need to become what's beyond the books say. Take the kids on a journey through time if you teach history, knowing the exact years isn't necessarily important, knowing the row of order is. I had great teachers in those subjects, my history teacher was an older bearded guy who wasn't afraid of suddenly acting to be a king or a warrior. And then there's my language teachers... for English I've been through a lady of British origin, a Dane that had spent 15 years in the US and a South African lady born from Danish parents. I don't know what my accent is, but the books were supposed to teach me British English... All I can say is that my can doesn't resemble my can't while I speak.. it's carn't. 🤷♂️
@Gert-DK3 ай бұрын
Religion and history is actually a very exciting subject in and around Denmark. From being one of the most powerful countries in Europe to being almost wiped out, we're still here. Remember when you speak English that 5-10% of the words come from Danish (Norse). Many of the English "th" words are from Danish. The Vikings in England left a bigger mark. With the Vikings, modern religion starts, with it downs and ups. Good to see you moving on safely in life (career wise). You will probably end up in Copenhagen City Hall, in the education sector. I have a cousin that did that, not in CPH, but in Aarhus.

I am American living in Denmark too and have found the Danish language to be very difficult for me to speak and hear. I can't imagine moving here in high school and going to Danish high school. Now I assume your university reading materials are in Danish, your lectures, most of your interactions. You seem to be totally fine with this but I'm just curious if you feel overwhelmed or even lost especially when at university level the vocabulary might be new when it comes to learning a new subject. I remember you said in high school most people talked in English to you but of course you must be fluent in Danish. I just am really impressed how effortless it seems for you and how it doesn't seem like the Danish language is causing you any extra stress.

The idea with a professionsbachelor is also that a normal BSc (in stem fields especially) is often not worth much on it's own without the following masters. So even though it's often more narrow in what jobs open up, and it often takes a year longer due to the internships, it's still a more focused path if you know where you're going.

"Bachelor's degree in a trade" seems like a good way to put it. It encompasses educations such as, teacher, pedagogue, nurse, midwife, finance, event economics, animation, engineering (though not geared towards academic research), journalism - etc Contrary to "normal" bachelor degrees, the common thing for these are that the profession bachelors are geared towards positions that generally have the same name as the education and that after the bachelor you are generally "done" with education - very few from a profession bachelor background pursue a master's degree or higher, whereas in areas with ordinary bachelor degrees like most things STEM, a master's degree is the norm because the goal of these educations is often R&D

I assume it's the Bachelor of Education (B. Ed.) Programme - a professional bachelor's degree - usually taught at University Colleges (Professionshøjskoler in danish). It's just like a regular bachelor’s degrees taught at regular Universities but have a stronger emphasis on practice. It allows you to continue studying for a master's degree at a regular University. Although the two bachelor's degrees are similar, and provides the same opportunities for a master's degree. They usually differs when it comes to job opportunities. A bachelor's degree from a regular University is usually just a stepping stone towards a master's degree, it does not qualify you to enter a specific profession. A professional bachelor's degree however qualifies you to enter a specific profession or to continue studying.

The term for an institution where you study "professionsbachelor" is "professionshøjskole", even though it's not a højskole. Several universities in Denmark has/did have the "højskole"-postfix to the name, f.ex. Handelshøjskolen og Danmarks tekniske højskole, with big research departments and ph.d.-students etc.. A bachelor degree from a university is called "forskningsbaseret" and the professionsbachelor is not that, that's the difference that is the reason for the "professions"-prefix to the degree. Still professionsbachelor gives you access to university to take master degrees in some fields, the fields depend on your professionsbachelor degree. An advantage of professionsbachelor compared to bachelor is, that it gives you access to jobs where the degree is a requirement, like nurse, folkeskole-teacher and pædagog. The university bachelor degree is typically not enough to get an "interesting" job, students are required to take master-degree's. We need good teachers in Denmark, so it's great to hear that Maya is studying to be a teacher! And not only a teacher, but a danish teacher, it's so cool - and definitely not the easiest thing to do for an american. Jeg ønsker hende al mulig held og lykke med det 😁

do you plan to use your teacher education in the US sometime? What does mom do? Sounds cool with travel work.

Proffesions bachelor is a bachelor degree that you can find employment with after graduating. A bachelor from an university (in dk) can almost never give you employment in Denmark. ☺️ I would compare a proffesionshøjskole to college

Good luck, I think you'll be good. 20% of the students in the primary school are bad at Danish and mathematics because the teachers are good at learning by heart... but not at telling things in 3 different ways, so they get everyone involved. thanks for wideoer.

congratulations on the admission, now you have 3.5 years of hprd and fun work waiting for you, I myself have a professional bachelor in professional nursing from 2011 and I enjoy my time at school and in the hospital, for you it's just school and school😆 so I wish you luck and happiness comes to me😁
