"This is the Internet, so you don't actually have to be right when you say things!" 😂😂 You are so right! Got told repeatedly by someone yesterday that I was wrong- when the truth was that it was simply something slightly obscure that she personally didn't know! Microwaving canned mushy peas is absolutely acceptible! I would do that every time! It was heartening to see that making the effort to make your own from scratch paid off. Not always a practical option, but worth the effort. Of course the origin of mushy peas is that the dried peas could be harvested and kept over winter and used in nourishing pottages (soups) when there was little else around - which is also the origin of Baked Beans in the US (I grew up on Little House on the Prairie books). Personally, I am a 'yes' to the addition of mint.

Tinned mushy peas are never anything like real mushy peas and nothing like the mushy peas you used to get from chip shops (may be different these days as a good chippy is getting very difficult to find in my experience). You can buy frozen mushy peas which you have to boil or ready to eat which are very good. Lots of vinegar or mint sauce (made with vinegar) is well worth trying.

Good luck in London finding Mushy peas in a chippy. I know Peter Kay jokes about it, but it was true, none of our local chippies sold them except for one Chinese owned chip shop, but even they were tinned mushy peas and they are vile. Either cook them fresh or don't bother. It was worth moving up north just to know every chippy had them.

Hilarious and informative. The last time I made mushy peas from scratch was nearly 50 years ago. It was much easier to find dried marrow fat peas back then. More recently I keep Batchelors in the cupboard, but at the moment I have ASDA own brand which got good reviews so I thought I would try it. In my experience mushy peas are different between every chippy that make their own. These days most use pre-made to save time and effort. Also the seasoning can be completely different. I don't get out of the London are very often since I retired, but "back in my day" I used to travel round England a lot and I have eaten fish-n-chips in all sorts of places. The best has always been somewhere like Whitby, where the fish would have been landed that morning, and the chips made fresh. The last time I was there the mushy peas were made fresh as well, and were very mushy, and quite peppery. When I used the canned pre-made variety I sometimes like to add garlic salt, and recently I have tried Maggi Hot Seasoning. Experiment! Enjoy! Thank your for a most entertaining episode.🙂

Her dried peas made great antique Blundabus pellets but all I managed to hit was the greenhouse and her dog, both by accident, he growled at me whenever I went near him after.

A great advocate of the dried peas, I don’t think they can be beat (excepting that the mushy peas of old we got from the chip shop - circa 1960s - which were beyond compare), a lot of messing about but worth it. Interestingly, my choice of the tinned peas are Morrison’s, never tried the Bachelor’s tinned but would expect then to be, er, ok? I remember trying the tinned when they first came out and they almost put me off the pre prepared for life, tasted like boiled down processed peas-ugh! I’d b*gger the sugar and halt the salt in the preparation of the dried peas, and no mint! The subtle hint of bicarb in the finished peas adds to the overall flavour - delicious with a splotch of ketchup and a dust of salt and pepper (vinegar even?)😋

An unexpected and interesting video well done! A few points: weren't they cold by the time you got around to eating them, unless I missed something heating up a can of marrowfat peas gives you hotter marrowfat peas not mushy peas, in my experience frozen mushy peas are the best - you can boil them to the consistency you prefer. The next thing to try is grey peas and bacon (a Black Country thing), but only use those two ingredients don't tart them up as many on-line recipes do. Soak grey peas overnight/two nights with bicarb, boil and when consistency is nearly right add small pieces of fried bacon. Add a fair amount of white pepper when done and eat with crusty bread. Mmm love mushy peas - and the un-mushy (but cooked, of course!) marrowfat peas. I'm vegetarian and often, when friends are having fish and chips, I'll join them with a plate of chips and mushy peas. Lots of vinegar in the mushy peas, please! Have you ever tried Parched Peas?

My grandmother used to make the Bigga dried peas…..for some reason they got the whole family farting like crazy every time. 😂
