@valeriejackson76593 жыл бұрын
You really need a kettle and a teapot to make a good pot of tea. Most self respecting cafes or tearooms in the UK bring a teapot to your table, never a teabag in a mug (that's so down market). I prefer either Yorkshire tea (I being a Yorkshire woman) or Rington's tea from Northumberland. You don't need to leave the teabags in the water for as long as four minutes and I would definitely recommend using just a dash of semi skimmed milk. And it's so very British to use a tea cosy (haha) to keep the tea warm in the pot for that second or third cup. Enjoy!

Hi Joel, good first effort. Years ago I learned somewhere that tea should not be left for too long (a few minutes?) to brew, because it contains tannins. Google has plenty to say about this, but the downside is that tannins impart a bitter taste, getting stronger with time. Tea also contains good elements, which are the first to be released into hot water. So I usually wait less than a minute, giving the bag an occasional prod with a teaspoon until the colour looks right, before fishing the bag out and adding milk.
@grahamhill22673 жыл бұрын
Hi Joel, well done for trying out tea. You won’t believe how frustrating it is watching you do something as simple as making tea for the first time, it’s something us Brits can do without thinking about it, but hey, I’m sure you can make breakfast pancakes better than I can. I’m really glad that you enjoyed drinking tea, you’ll find your own preference of how you want to drink it, white, black, sweetened, unsweetened, strong or weak (length of time you allow it to brew). You’ll find it really refreshing after one of your running sessions, rehydrate in your normal way but also have a mug of tea the way you like it and you’ll feel a real benefit of refreshment! Even if you’re feeling hot and sweaty, it’ll help to cool you down and refresh you. You’ll find that tea compliments so many different foods like your beans on toast, experiment to find out. There’s also nothing to stop you dunking American cookies in to the tea too, but don’t soak them for too long or they’ll disintegrate into the tea! Anyway, another great reaction video, keep on doing them Joel, they’re very entertaining! 😃👍🏻

Always warm the teapot with hot water from tap before hand if you are using leaves, then empty water out and add leaves teaspoon for each cup and one for the pot. Was also surprised about a kettle though. I would’ve thought American households still had kettles either plug-in ones or ones that warm up with gas. I drink coffee regularly and I take it very seriously. But I have found that a "cuppa" can be remarkably refreshing after doing some steady physical work, such as firing the boiler on a steam boat and tending to the regular lubrication of the engine. The British understand that. Modern British tanks are equipped with built in apparatus for brewing tea. On the steamboat we have what is known as a "Windermere" tea kettle which heats the water with steam from the boiler. Very efficient and you definitely need a regular kettle for heating water for any purpose. I thoroughly enjoy your production.

Electric kettle not only for tea but also for coffee, so quick and easy. Americans don't use electric kettles. Hard to find teabags in America without yards of fishing line on them LOL. Warm the cup /mug , put teabag in pour on water, I use a tea bag pincher for squeezing the teabag not a spoon or my fingers. Depending on the quality of the tea in the tea bag and if you like your tea strong or weak, is how much and how long you dunk and squeeze the teabag. Some people make two cups of tea with one teabag, you could with Yorkshire or you could with a cheap teabag, but the latter would taste weak. I only drink black tea, like the strong taste without milk.

How you take your tea, Joel, is a very personal choice and you need to experiment to see what you like (e.g. how long to brew it, i.e. it's "strength", whether and how much to add sugar, whether and how much to add milk and so on). I'm glad you chose PG Tips though, which I'm assuming you've been sent or have imported. Although it's far from being the *very* best tea, it's kind of a standard average and much better than most tea you'll get in the States. However, some tips for you: - 1. Much easier with a kettle! (probably also won't taste of whatever you last cooked in the saucepan too...) 2. Tea often tastes better when it doesn't cool rapidly, although again it depends on whether you like your tea that hot or not. If you do, you can pre-warm your cup by putting some boiling water in, swilling it around for about 20 seconds (or until the cup is hot to the touch), tipping it away and then putting the teabag and more water in. That way the cup doesn't steal too much of the heat away from the water straight away, as it's already hot. 3. When you experiment with the length of brewing, longer is stronger. But if you go too long, you'll get the release of too many "tannins", which are bitter-tasting chemicals. Since you don't like bitter things, you probably want to avoid that. 4. As others have said, a tea pot will give you an even better flavour. But that might be hard to justify as a student...unless you convert some of your buddies to drinking tea. Tea pots really come into their own when serving many people at once. 5. Different types of tea will give you different tastes. PG Tips and Yorkshire Tea tends towards a blend and balance, Yorkshire is a bit stronger. You can also have a very unique, almost smoky flavour from Earl Grey tea, a very light and fragrant flavour from Darjeeling tea or a very powerful and strong "hit" from Assam or Ceylon teas. It might be difficult (though not impossible) to get these in the States though. 6. Definitely do not put the milk in before the water...I'm sure some people do that, but it's sacrilege (in my opinion)

Milk was originally poured in before the tea in order to protect the porcelain, which would develop cracks over time because of the hot water. These days we rarely use porcelain, preferring mugs and getting the colour of the tea right is easier to do if the milk is added afterwards. Leave the teabag in the cup to brew for at least 5 minutes before adding the milk as this will release the antioxidants in the tea as well s allowing the flavors to develop.

Hi Joel! Once again, well done on trying the tea. As other's have commented earlier, you can make tea with or without milk, but also, you would be surprised on how much the taste of the tea is affected by different types of milk too. Full cream, semi-skimmed (half & half I think you call it), skimmed or with powdered milk? A tip I would say is to save energy, and for expediency, if you do not have a kettle to hand, is to microwave the water in a glass microwavable jug like pyrex or similar (as glass will not hold any residual odours of flavours that may penetrate plastic ones, if not deeply cleaned). About 1min on 800 Watts is hot enough, or increase microwave time in 30 second increments, remember, you can always use a microwave to heat water 💧, just an FYI? Thanks again, great stuff, ohhh, gotta dunk a 🍪 not too long though, you don't want it falling or melting away into your well made tea! Take care, stay safe, TTFN, from Mary in ENGLAND 🏴

But anyway, forget electric kettles, most Americans don't have any type of kettle! They usually just nuke it like I do 😛 Then plop the bag in and leave it in til they're done drinking. And usually no cream or sugar! BUT ... we call it dunking too, only that's what you do with a cookie in milk lol Tea is okay ... it's definitely good for when you're trying to cut back on too much coffee.

Hi Joel, just to help you understand the milk before or after discussion. To brew correctly the tea (bags or loose) needs to be exposed first to boiling water. This can happen in the mug (tea bag) or in a Tea Pot (loose or in a tea bag). If milk is introduced to the mug first then the boiling water is cooled before exposure to the bag and therefore the tea will not brew correctly - strictly on no-no! When brewing in a tea pot this is where the discussion of before or after starts. Once you have a pot of tea should you pour into the cup/mug before the milk? I think that logically the milk goes in last because that way you can gauge the colour and add more milk if required. Just as you did. Remember, if you put it in the mug first you cannot take it out later. BTW, don't they have granulated sugar in the USA?

An additional biscuit variety to try with your tea are Rich Tea, or - if you can find them, Marie / Maria. Also, a Rich Tea variant are Rich Tea Fingers, which are an oval (rather than round shape) and slightly thinner. McVities is the top brand, but most supermarkets do their own generic equivalent, of varying quality depending on the supermarket chain.

The main reason American's don't have kettles, is to do with their electric system. Because the Voltage is half the UK, it takes more power and time to boil a kettle of water... Also Joel, Bisto Gravy is pronounced like the start of the word BIScuit (not as bee!). All the best, from London

@@alanmon2690 - I just watched the vid (very interesting). But as far as I can tell (I'm not an electrician...), a household has the 'potential option' to have 220V (+) in use when required i.e. when a dryer is installed, but it needs to be specifically fitted (by a competent DIY'er or professional electrician !). It still means that you cannot sell a kettle to 'all & sundry' because they are still going to take it home, plug it in to any US standard socket and expect it to work the same way as a UK one, but it won't ! Surely you need to provide a 220V outlet in the kitchen especially for the kettle or similar ? So no quick, inexpensive and simple fix...

There are no strings attached to those teabags, beacause you're supposed to use a "teapot" and you put 1 to 3 bags in the pot (previously warmed) then pour the boiled water (bring the pan or kettle to the pot to give it the time needed to stop boiling) Don't ever put fiercely boiling water onto tea, it spoils the taste). The let it infuse for a couple of minutes. Pour some milk in a cup (bone cup china is best) and then pour the tea and sugar to taste ... You'll enjoy the best cup of tea eaver. I use PG tips or Tetley teabags. All the best !

Tea first thing! Best drink of the day! As I’m on my own I make mine with a teabag in a beaker. Got to be a china beaker. Got to be Yorkshire Tea! Traditional way to make tea is boil the kettle, pour a little into a teapot to warm the pot, empty it out and add tea leaves, bring kettle back to boil and pour into teapot whilst it’s a rolling boil. Leave tea to mash as we say in Yorkshire or brew. You can put milk in first or last. The reason milk was put in first was to stop the hot tea cracking the china cups in years gone by. Strong tea here is called ‘builder’s tea’. LOL

That’s an interesting question. How do you boil the water for your coffee without a kettle? Heinz tomato soup is the best. One coffee, six or seven cups of tea a day. Ah, the milk question. You can only put the milk in first if you make your tea in pot, because you have to make the tea with water at boiling point, so if you are pouring water into a cup with a tea bag in it, you can’t out the milk in, as the cold milk will not let the tea brew properly.
