I’m enjoying this series. I tow with an Isuzu NPS and American trucks are a bit os a mystery to me, I had always assumed that the right hand drive conversion was done in a standard way. You said you would cover modification in more detail in episode 4 but I just wanted to mention something that seems to confuse many people. A light vehicle is anything with a registered GVM under 4.5T, a truck is anything with a registered GVM over 4.5T. These vehicles are governed by different rules regarding modifications. Light vehicle engineers are state based - approved by the local state rego authority. Trucks, in all states other than WA and NT, are administered by the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR). A modification that may be legal on a truck might not be approved for a car and vice versa, also some mods on a truck like say a towbar install, need an engineers report and a mod plate when on a light vehicle they do not. You can use any NHVR accredited engineer to inspect and approve your modification, this engineer can be in say Qld, while your truck is registered in NSW. This is important because it means you can use an engineer who is familiar with your truck and the modification you want to make. This can mean way less hassles. A local engineer may tell you something is impossible while another may have already approved this for someone else and be able to approve it no problem.

Great vid. Easy to get a 5.5t GVM with a Chevy 2500, I’ve heard of more but have no info, my GCM is 12,474kg. Payload is just over 1,700kg. Also the RAM 2500 suspension tends to be a bit more inboard and wobbly with weight on with the airbag models, the Chevy feels rock solid.

The advantage of having a 2500 with a gvm upgrade over a 3500 is when you drive empty the ride in the 2500 coil rear is more comfortable as it's not as stiff as the factory leafs in the 3500. They have the same axles/calipers in the 2500 and 3500 so you can get 5800gvm out of a late model 2500 which is the same as your 3500.

@@billstanford1725 that’s a 20k upgrade that seems alittle dodgy as the don’t actually change anything on the rear diff however they change the rating 🧐 which is alittle interesting and the diffs are different how the shocks mount and the springs mount of course. I cannot believe how many people think it’s a good idea to tow 3.5 T with Thai built dual cabs, SUV’s ect. I even don’t think it is a good idea to use a Patrol or 300 series either full time. Yes the manufacturers say you can but I don’t think it is safe.

Questions for the Ram Average fuel usage you get and it can be combined, towing and exploring without the van? Average AdBlue usage? Have you had any DPF and SCR concerns? Have you had any gearbox concerns? What is the milage on the Ram now? Glad to see the Cape trip was a self inflicted wound, the damage in your video is a bit unclear for me, fan blades, radiator, serpentine belt is what was clear, it seemed you had renewed the visco fan unit and a tensioner? Wading in deep water is a skill without a radiator muff todays 4x4 ‘s have no thought put into that to assist the driver/owner. Sorry will keep it short 😂😂😂 I have so much more to ask. Yeah it was self inflicted however I have done so many water crossings before with out a drama even that day it was my 3rd. It’s amazing how many people with vehicles bigger then 1500’s shit can them and say they are just like the rest of the smaller twin cabs. My triton has a greater payload than my Ram 1500 but in no way shape or form does it tow my 2.5T boat or float as well as the 1500. Instead of trying to put people/ cars down, they should really keep the conversation around getting the vehicle that suits your needs. The 1500 might be the common smaller ute in the US but doesn’t mean it’s the same as the common smaller Ute in OZ even if the payload is the same or smaller.

By the time your exceeding 1700kg of payload you should be reconsidering a completely different vehicle or the amount of shit your carting around. You would look at the NPS/Canter/Hino, they give you 7.5t gvm, 11t gcm, and a bit over 3.5t payload as standard. You also get a bigger tray (a dual cab gives you a 3.6m tray) also parts are easier to get then an American Ute, and mechanics will actually work on them. There is a downside, they aren’t as comfortable both interior and ride quality. But if your wanting to take way too much gear it’s one of the only Legal and safe ways of doing it
@roamin_in_a_ram5 ай бұрын
@@SUPERTRUCKER166 why 1700kg?? Why not 1000kg or 1800kg 😂 We tow 4.5T not 3.5T so less payload plus and bigger tray/canopy/longer chassis = more weight 300kg+ in material. Yes parts are some what easier however we have lots of friends touring in these trucks and they still wait the same 7days as us for parts and just because they can work on it doesn’t mean you should use them haha Yes they aren’t as comfortable so I guess we can choose to be comfortable??? To much gear haha ?? We take what we want why is that bad or to much??

What about the fact that the fuel economy is way worse, like ram towing over 4t is like 20lt per 100 and the nps is like 30lt and about 1/10th of the power. Not saying I do not love the full size trucks over the American trucks.

Well,well,well (3wells) . So , my understanding is that you both ended up buying 3500 class trucks and then still had to do GVM upgrades , airbags etc. !!! Why did you both buy a truck that couldn’t do the job , you needed it to do ? Why didn’t you both buy , let’s say a 4500 class or even a 5500 class ? (What about an F650 or F750, no that’s silly, what was I thinking?) I , like everyone else out there , will continue doing my own research (Hey, thanks for that hot tip!) and purchase the vehicle that best meets my needs and wallet while still maintaining the upmost safety . Hence I have chosen a 1500 class (utility sedan/shopping trolley) with a max. towing capacity of 4500kg , I intend to tow 3500kg . If , after adding accessories front to rear , water , fuel , solar , boat , outboard , people , food and dog 🐶 , I will most likely , just like you , get a 🥁🪄🎺GVM🎉🍾☄️ upgrade to best suit my needs and safety requirements . Hey , guess what ? If I only wanted to tow 2750kg/3000kg , I would buy a Ranger etc. !!! Arrr yooze pickin’ up wot I’m puttin’ down . By the way , I’ll be getting a 5.0 F150 , I’ll look FORD to meeting up with you both on a Quarter mile of beach next year . I’ll be blowin’ ya doors off for all of the little 1500 utes and all those smaller , EAT MY SAND , pfffft . After I beat you both on the sand , we might have a pissin’ competition , it’s obvious you’ve been practicing together, Hafukityha 😂😂😂
