I want to mention that most US College textbooks can be sold after the course is completed to used book dealers. On this note you could often buy used textbooks (sometimes even previous editions to the “required” edition of the textbook. Luke Nathaniel at my univertisy the teachers made the books (from 300 to 500 pages aprox) with the power points and explanations. That way we can follow the lectures amd write a lot on it. The 5 books for semester, the folder and the planner was 54€. So there wasn’t any need of selling it. And in the public university my sister goes, they don’t use any book. They just take notes and have the powerpoints on the moodle for them so thry can print them if they want to. Basically they don’t pay for any book anf the folder is free.

But we have clubs too, some are open till 7-8h in the morning and real afterclubs only close at 11-12h the next day. We have pretty much the same system, everything is just open 5 hours longer... One example: In two weeks we have a 10 day long festival in the city center on multiple stages and squares. The late night party square is open till 8 in the morning every day for 9 days, and the last day/night it stays open till 10... So bars closing at 23 or 0h is really early for us, even abroad when a bar closes at 2h it seems early to me, since in Belgium (or at least in my city) that's when we're just getting started... :P

Another thing about minoring in subjects in the US is that it also provides you an opportunity to study something you genuinely enjoy at an established institution, like a passion, but it's not necessarily practical to study it as your major because the job market for it is not that great. For example, I know a lot of people studying something STEM-related, like engineering or computer science, but they might have a passion for fine arts, or photography, or psychology, so they major in engineering or CS, and then minor in that one subject they really like. Most of the time when you're applying for jobs, your major matters way more to the company anyway. So the minor can be COMPLETELY unrelated to what your major area of study is. A lot of students take advantage of it to continue doing what they love, or to learn something they're really interested in, whilst also having a secure major so they can find a job after graduation :-)

They deserve it. Those kids work their asses off being the best public face of The Ohio State University and it goes so far beyond halftime performances. As much as we love our football team (and Buckeye Nation is known as one of the most enthusiastic and loyal fan bases anywhere), we really do love the marching band even more... when the band is introduced as "The Pride of the Buckeyes" those aren't just hollow words. The university gives scholarships to 715 student athletes, but they give none to the marching band. Also in the United States: technically, if a institution of higher learning is called a "university" it has graduate programs as well as undergraduate programs. For the most part, "colleges" just give out undergraduate degrees. I went to college 500 miles--within the same state--away from home (California).

Hi Jack! this was SUCH an interesting video and really enjoyed it :) I would like to point out that there are some differences that aren't highlighted in terms of Scotland (of which has some of the oldest and most prestigious universities in the UK!) For instance, Scottish students do not pay tuition fees. The Scottish Government pays our tuition fees directly to the university themselves (yay for devolution!). Also, we have a very different education system - the term 'college' is not used as to mean '6th form'. Rather, we call the final year of school as '6th year'. 'College' is actually often used to describe local education facilities post-school education such as apprenticeship courses and so on. Just thought it might be some useful insight and a friendly reminder that 'british' and 'UK' actually extends much further than England and Wales :)

This is so interesting to watch. I did an American exchange for one year at uni and it was so overwhelmingly different! Awesome video! Just a note, as a college student at a very different university in the US, I want to point out that things can be really different at other universities. Thinking about topics like grading, requirements, athletics, funding, etc., the items mentioned here aren’t necessarily all generalizable to schools across the whole nation.

What's a private university?
@cursed_ink5 жыл бұрын
Attending a private university in America means you're either coming from a rich and/or famous family, or you got a full ride scholarship. Also, a private university is more or less a school that's privately funded. For example: in America, your state schools (i.e. Ohio State University, Kent State University, etc.) and your community colleges are government funded, therefore tuition is a hell of a lot cheaper, but the school is also expected to follow government rules. A private school is paid for entirely by the student population's tuition, and they aren't held to the same "codes of conduct" that public schools are. The best example is the fact that a private school can deny your admission based on race, gender, sexuality, religion, etc. and they can't be sued because of it due to being independent from the government.
@tinaz.61375 жыл бұрын
CurseOfTheEnder the ivy league schools are also private- some also help greatly if you come from a low income family
@cursed_ink5 жыл бұрын
Tina Z. Yeah, the ivy league schools are private, hence why they’re so exclusive and hard to get into too. I come from a low income family, and Princeton reached out to me and offered a full ride scholarship even though I never expressed interest in going. Unfortunately, my major is Equine Studies which, despite all having Equestrian sports teams, none of the Ivy League schools offer as a degree, so that was that...

Evan saying 50% is only half right isn't true because that's usually for essay based questions, whereas in the US it seems from what Evan has said it's more multiple choice based

Evan often says "In the US, this happens" but it's really just his experience. I had some multiple choice exams, but many more of the "show your work" variety. Also, the required classes he listed for "in Anerica" should really have been "at my school" because not all schools have the same requirements.

One of the reasons textbooks are so expensive in the US is because the 4 textbook publishing houses: Pearson, Wiley, McGraw-Hill, Cengage own 80% of all the market. They often publish the slides and many professors use their supplementary material which requires a 1-time use access code, driving up the cost. The cost has risen 1000% since the 70's for textbooks. Some schools even have contracts with these publishers that they will meet certain quota of enrolling students with these expensive access codes and if they fail to meet their quotas the school's access to content goes up. These companies are vultures.
@Myfluffynoturs5 жыл бұрын
Evan you should make sure to qualify what you say about colleges since a lot of stuff seems specific to your school/not generalized for all schools. For example (I went to a college in the US), we only needed to take 50% of the coursework to get a minor and we only needed a language credit, a quantitative credit (math) and 25% of our credits outside of our major to graduate. Also my college had sports but they weren't really a big deal. The students doing sports were there because they academically got into the school and decided to do sports. It depends on the school.
