The grandma commercial basically comes down to this: Granny 1:'So check this out, I'm just cruisin' in my ride, blasting 50 cent, you know, just vibin'. So I totally slam that shit, and this biker cop pulls me over with his fake-ass sneakers, telling me I can't put my foot down there, and I gotta get him that moolah. So I go like 'hey, chill out, I ain't your bitch!' Granny 2: 'wicked!'

1:00 *The Walking Fridge* That's awesome you put it in there. I was actually part of the crew filming this commercial. We had 4 fridges: a regular fridge… a fridge with feet, that was operated by some kind of puppeteer… a fridge with just the fixed feet, but where the door could be opened to reveal the bottles… and a 3D rendered model, for some shots where it walked in the room with people. For the 3D rendering, they took pictures at the place where fridge walked, stitched those pictures to turn it into a sphere. This was used to create the realistic lighting and reflections of the scene. The bottles were coated with transparent paint, to keep the condensation drops on the bottle. They would drip down without the paint. The props guy was still spray-painting the bottels when I arrived on the set, in Duivendrecht _(Near Amsterdam)._ The interior of the house was actually inside a studio. Outside it was kinda chilly. And, although the house was entirely inside the studio, I got goosebumps when the back-window opened. It was super fun to work on this project.

The first advert. The reason they are speaking English, is the Dutch guy is talking to the (possibly) Polish tradesman. It is completely normal to use English as the lingua franca between people of different nationalities in NL (as well as all over the world). The fact they were speaking English is the whole point, ie the misunderstanding comes because the words “walk in” are misunderstood by the builder as “walking”

Ohhh little additional detail that I feel the need to mention; I've spoken about the WK often (being a Dutch woman) to some Germans online. I sometimes mocked them a bit, if we'd just won a basic from them OR if they had just lost and we were still in the game. I'd type; 'Haha, hope you're having a great day today. Youknow, with the WK and how you lost and all :P' And I always felt they overreacted when they disconnected the chat and I didn't understand why they were só sensitive about it, because the rest of what I said was always nice. (I love Germany and the German language and the Germans themselves.) Then, one day, I read a German book that mentioned the Dutch. It said; 'Dutch people don't call it the WM (Weltmeisterschaft) because they call it the "WK." (Wereldkampioenschappen.) So, don't confuse that with the German "WK" (Weltkrieg a.k.a. Worldwar.) So, when I mocked them, they appareantely thought I was referring to the second world war that they lost. Hence the reason they disconnected. xD Felt the need to mention it, since it was about WK and WC and so on.

A funny thing. The commercial with the monster truck for the insurance company is actually being used in classes as a 'failed commercial'. They have such a whole range of funny and interesting commercials and at a time everyone knew the slogan 'Even Apeldoorn Bellen' (A quick call to Apeldoorn; which is a city). But nobody knew the ACTUAL company which the commercial was made for. So super succesfull for getting the message across... but a failure for getting the company known. :D
@XaeeD3 жыл бұрын
Yeah that's genuinely hard to translate. It's a kind of time specific, location specific slang, and slang like that changes constantly. I doubt anyone even speaks like that anymore. People are translating it for you, but none of the translations I read are entirely on point. For example, when she says "gewoon chill", most people translate that to "just chillin'", or "just vibin'", but "chill" isn't used as a verb there, it's a noun. She's describing the situation: it's just a normal every day occurance to be hanging out in your car, blasting rap music from the speakers: "Just chill, you know?" She says "neppe patas", and that's probably Surinaams for sneakers: "pata". I'm really not familiar with Surinaams whatsoever, but that's probably either derived from "bata", meaning "shoe" in Yoruba, or in my opinion, it could perhaps be referring to the "foot" itself, from "pauta" in Colloquial Latin. But there's a whole list of possible etymological sources. There's the obvious PIE root "ped" that means "foot", from which you get "octopus", "biped", "pedestrian", etc., and of course "foot" itself. I honestly can't pinpoint the actual origin of the word "patas", but it has a Dutch ring to it, as it's in a plural form, because of the addition of the -s at the end. So "neppe patas" becomes "fake sneakers", "bogus sneakers", or "phoney sneakers", implying they're "cheap knock-offs". However, translating it to "sneakers" examplifies a problem. Do you interpret the meaning and find a fitting English equivalent, or do you render it in a literal sense? Because "sneakers" really has nothing in common with "patas" from an etymological approach, as "sneakers" refers to "sneaking around silently", which in turn refers to the rubber soles of the shoes, but "patas" lacks that meaning. And yet, "sneakers" is the closest word we can use. But is "sneakers" slang enough? Perhaps you could use "kicks", "high-tops", "steps", "runners", whichever one is preferred. One of the grannies says "gruwelijk", and the closest word in English would be "gruesome", and it has the literal meaning of "to shudder in horror". "Horror", "dread", "cruelty", "fear", "terror", etc., these are words that describe what "gruwelijk" means. But the word is also used to describe a cool situation. Like how "awe" in "awesome" really meant "terror" and "dread", or "reverence", but is now used to express amazement, without any negative connotations. So "gruwelijk" can be "awesome", "wicked", "sick", anything that means something aweful, but is used to express amazement, admiration and/or affirmation. The entire text is composed of words that are inherently difficult to translate, or even to interpret. Most Dutch speakers wouldn't know what exactly is being said in the commercial. I think people did a great job though, in the comments. You know, they should let kids in schools translate that text in English classes.

If you get the chance to find the "Even Apeldoorn Berllen" commercial where a guy is mopping infront of a huge fishtank, hits the glass and a giant shark suddenly comes to bump the glass...a classic!

Loved the video. As an suggestion, Volkswagen has a very funny commercial with a red Golf and old lady.
