Been in that pub a few times and cycled past it a few dozen. it's not far from Exeter, in the UK. Moorland is bad scrub grass, used for sheep on hillsides and poor farming because the soil is usually thin and where it isn't, it is waterlogged. There are three major moors in the south west: Dartmoor, where this is, Bodmin moor near the end of the SW of England and Exmoor, to the well to the north of Exeter. It is a pub on its own, no town. There is a parking spot a few miles away near broodmoor, the old insane asylum and prison. In the UK 250 miles is a long way, in the USA 250 years is a long time.

Why are 80’s horror films so good? Two words: Practical Effects.
@ericjanssen394

I’ll add one more: “Mainstream”. 80’s horror movies were made to scare the crap out of EVERYONE on Friday nights, not “bold, unique and disturbing” A24 indie childbirth metaphors for the hardcore fanboys to try and grab grownup artsy critical validation. And if we had Blumhouse “franchise universes”, it was called Friday the 13th.

@@panowa8319 Not only overused, but lazily used. It’s now become the easy thing to do, but there’s something about it that takes away from the ‘reality’ of the film. I think the original Star Wars films feel much more real & lived in compared to the prequels, or sequels. The original Jurassic Park used CGI, but used it sparingly, as a way to compliment the practical effects. Unfortunately, that will soon be extinct & all we’ll have is cgi. It’s like the difference between listening to musicians play instruments & listening to a computer playing synthesized music.

@@panowa8319 I agree with TheKillerAwokeBeforeDawn. CG isn't just lazy but used for the most banal things. I think the epitome of this is the fact that CG has been used to make merkins and give actresses bigger boobs. It's used by producers and even some directors as a replacement for good acting, story, and even made fight scenes more lazy, because you can just "CG it" now. When will producers learn that CG is a tool, and not a replacement for everything the movie needs?

A moor is a tract of open, uncultivated land preserved for hunting. The werewolf is the silver bullet. Piccadilly Circus is London's Time Square. Public X rated theaters were a thing back then. I live in the Roanoke VA area and we had one (Lee Theater). It opened as a regular theater in 1941. The first movie it played was Little Foxes with Bette Davis. In the 1970's it became a porno theater and was shut down around 1985. In England the police do NOT carry guns.

The people who visited them were called "the raincoat crowd" because they'd typically wear long coats to hide what they were doing during the screening. One of my favorite little things about this movie, the makeup is so good and there was so much confidence in it, the first time we see Jack "alive" with all his wounds, it's in a brightly lit room where you can see every bit of makeup from every angle with lots of lighting and it all looks fantastic. It just speaks to the quality of the practical effects of this film, and then they added a decent romance, lots of great humor, a strong cast, and plenty of clever slights on film and society in general and made a classic.

Technically the Pre-Giuliani era Times Square in NYC when it was full of hookers, sex shops, peep shows and such. Likewise before the advent of home video porn theaters were common in many places. The much of the actual rise of home video and the deciding factor of VHS vs Betamax in the home video format wars can be attributed to the porn industry.

You have to understand that time period. This was 1981. There was no such thing as the Internet. No one had a cell phone or a computer. There was no such thing as on demand. If someone wanted to watch porn, you had two options. You could go into your local video store and rent one on VCR, which for many people was the more embarrassing choice. You have to stand in line with your copy of your movie, right next to people who are renting The Godfather, Superman or whatever else, and hand your movie to the cashier who would probably look at you a little bit funny. I remember standing with my friends trying to figure out what movie we were renting, and once in a while someone go into that back section where they kept the 18 and older movies, and believe me we noticed it. We’d be whispering “that guy just went back THERE, did you see it??” Or option B, you could go to a theater and maybe be surrounded by four or five other guys who are there for the same purpose as you, and won’t be judging you.

I liked the effects used in this film except for that final jump cut at the end of the transformation. It always takes me out of it. That said, The Howling transformation is actually my favorite. It's similar to this but the design is very different and the on screen transformation actually begins with the human, having been shot in the head, pulling a bullet out of his forehead and THEN changing. It's far more graphic and gruesome and horrifying. The Howling came out in March of 81 and this film was released in August. I guess fewer people must've seen it. The Howling's effects were done by Rob Bottin who, among many other big films, did the practical effects for Carpenter's The Thing.

Yep - the Slaughtered Lamb was in village that had a church. On the North Yorkshire moors it might be 15 miles to the next village, so that pub would cater to the village itself and to all the farms within 7 or 8 miles. Part of the definition of a village is that it has a religious building (i.e. the church), and a central meeting place (sometimes a church hall, but most often a pub). If it is lacking either of these it is only a hamlet, and not a village.

Yes, porno theaters were a thing back in 1981 and had been since the 70s. Home videotapes eventually drove them out of business just by being more private, but those were still too new in 1981 to put that dent in them yet. And the place where it was at is Picadilly Circus, the "circus" part being the traffic circle, not a place with clowns and animal acts. Yes, it's sort of London's version of Times Square, and, like Times Square, it was on the rough and sleazy side in 1981 (think "Big"). Which meant it had its own unsavory version of clowns and animal acts, so maybe the "circus" part fits after all.

Us old timers consider this one a classic. Most horror comedies aren't scary or funny. Love that it still holds up

Great special effects in this one…back when it wasn’t all computer generated.

None of it was back then. Creature effects were in-camera as God intended.

This movie is well known and talked about. I just rewatched it a few nights ago. Other good werewolf movies you should watch are, The Howling, and Silver Bullet. I recently watched those too as well.

Great Choice Ashleigh, and it was so much fun to watch you watching that movie. i laughed my head of. XD For me, american werewolf is the perfect mixup between fun and thrill. On One hand all those obvious or hidden jokes, how Jack speaks with his alive friend, how David goes 3-4 times to the fridge "i'm not hungry" or even the Songs in the movie, that are telling from the moon. And: "Stay away from the moor" ;-). But on the other side brutal horror that (as we can see in your video) still can scare people. The Effects won the first Oscar for Make-up. And the man behind it,Rick Baker, leads this category with 7 Oscars out of 11 nominations. there were no Computers in 1982 that could create specialeffects. So what you see is mostly rubber, clay, paint and stoppmotion animation. And btw: YOUR HOUSE IS HAUNTED by this creepy cat, i guess ;-)

It is a black and white film adapted from a stage play, so it can play a little "off" for modern audiences, though.

At the time this movie was released in 1981, X-rated adult film theatres were still a fairly common thing in major cities. New York's Times Square was infamous for this during the 60's, 70's, and 80's. Some of these venues made a pretense of being sophisticated "art" houses (like the famous Grand Pussycat Cinema on Broadway) but most of them were grimy peep show emporiums, such the one seen in this movie. If you ever watch the 1976 Robert De Niro movie "Taxi Driver", you'll get a prime view of 1970's Times Square sleaze. British novelist L.P. Hartley nailed it when he said "The past is a foreign country; they do things differently there."

There was a theater in my town that showed x-rated movies and grindhouse movies. One week they'd show Deep Throat and the following week they'd show Last House On The Left or The Hills Have Eyes. My mom took me there to see Last House, Don't Look In The Basement, Scream Blackula Scream, and Cannibal Girls

Ashley, There was a drive-in theater on the Alcoa Hwy (by the flea market) that used to show pornos. Can you imagine living in a neighboring house, having to hear 80s porn blasting from 50 crappy drive-in theater speakers? LOL
