My great-great-grandfather, Thomas Jefferson Iler (EYE-ler), fought here with the 98th Ohio. He survived the war. I'll be visiting the battlefield in September (2023) and plan to stand on the ground where he stood.

The N.C. Department of Natural and Cultural Resources deserves a standing ovation for its efforts at Bentonville. Maintaining a Civil War Battlefield is a very expensive endeavor for any state. In addition, I'm sure that many watching this would be surprised to see just how rural Bentonville actually is.

My 9th-Great Grandfather was with the Union cavalry here. Sgt. John Blaine, Company H, 9th PA volunteer cavalry. He enlisted as a private in 1861, and fought through the entire war, returning home in 1865. He lived to be an old man, and is buried an hour's drive from where I live now. The regiment would be part of Sherman's escort to Bennett Farm to accept Johnston's surrender. It was a regimental gun from the 9th which fired the war's last shot in anger, on April 13th, during a skirmish outside Morrisville.

Thank you for the video. It must be extremely difficult to present such a complicated battle in small video segments. Thanks. The maps are very helpful. Imagine an officer ordering an attack that could/did cost the life of a son (or daughter) especially this late in the war...and realistically, for no good reason.

I went to Bentonville in 1998 / early 2000's.They seem to have done a really good job on it in the past 20 years. Map looks like a pork chop.

This best outcome of the Battle of Bentonville is that the land that the battle was fought on has now been preserved. Unfortunately thousands of more soldiers on both sides were sacrificed on the altar of the already lost cause of the Confederacy. How much better it would have been if Jefferson Davis, Lee, and Johnston would have surrendered unconditionally in January 1865, thereby saving the lives and limbs of these final casualties of the Civil War. There was no glory in these last desperate engagements, just more reasons for the hard feelings of the veterans of these battles and for the failed reconstruction of the post Civil War era as well, attitudes and events that held back the best chances for both sectional and racial reconciliation for at least 100 years.
