Manassas is an interesting one to mention here. Besides the obvious, the 2 Battles fought there, you have the Wilmer McLean caveat. The war literally started in his front yard and ended in his parlor after he fled with his family to Appomattox Courthouse following the 1st Battle of Bull Run. I grew up in western Prince William County, which makes me a Manasshole, but I only realized this in recent years of Civil War history studies.

Btw. Great brainstorm on lesson plans for all those who wish to immerse students into the 'world' surrounding any given battle. Too often we do pay attention too closely to the scale and details of any given battle and forget the affect of that action upon lives and the places forever scarred from the wounds of violence.

"The art of war is simple enough. Find out where your enemy is. Get at him as soon as you can. Strike him as hard as you can, and keep moving on." 💁 US Grant, the man.

The my families' ranch was first a Confederate encampment then a skirmish site. Buttons, and bullets are pretty easy to come across.

Yeah, the Union or Union Deserters shot my Great Great Grandfather in the back (IN THE BACK), he was an old man trying to escape his burning house. A complete noncombatant. He lived in a wilderness, a dirt poor pioneer and did not own slaves. How many stories are like that. What about their story, stinks.

14:35 Confiscating slave owners land at wars end would be ex post facto since slavery was legal when they engaged in it. As for punishment for rebellion, it would have to apply to all southerners or none, not just when it would be a convenient punishment because people needed housing. The government should have instead used public land for slaves to live on. 48:20 The photograph that most captured my attention was the dead confederate artillery men at Antietam with the Dunker church in the background. It represents the waste of war. Young men that had people at home worrying about them, and praying for their safe return, are now just macabre battlefield decorations. All the while, everyone else's lives go on. For me, the big named "heroes" that came out of the war will never measure up to those that lost everything in it.
