You and Gary are so passionate , I really appreciate it . I’m related to the Pritchard/grim families and a few more. I’m deep into my family ancestry tree lol. Gary im an Illinoisan who moved out here recently . My grandfathers are buried there near Daniel Morgan woooo. My grandfather was one of the Dutch mess. Charles Grim. I’ve been in Mount Hebron a lot lately tracking my ancestors, and the handley library. I have a grim ancestor that was Martin Van grim, he was in Ashbys 7th Calvary . He was a POW for a short time and then released in Winchester in 1865. I have his military enlistment record. Ashby brothers are buried there and stonewall cemetery . It’s an incredible sight to see being an illinoisan and coming out here. I’m overwhelmed with so much history in a good way. I’m the guy that pulls off the road and reads the historical signs and finds the stuff you guys describe lol . Back in Illinois, it’s Lincoln or Chicago lol not much civil war history there. It’s refreshing to be out here and immersed around all the other history be sides hearing everything about Lincoln in Illinois lol i would love to voluteer with you guys . I’m an OIF Vet. I’m actívely doing my family research on ancestors and i found out Martin van grim doesn’t have a government confederate marker. I’m in the process of completing paperwork to get him one at his burial site in panhandle Maryland. I remember visiting the Winchester courthouse there on the mall courtyard there and one of the Shenandoah courthouse guide, says he thinks Winchester was tossed back and and forth about 12 times, not 70… who knows . 12 or 70, it’s a lot

Thanks for the spotlight. I'm a Winchester resident and have visited most of these sites. Don't forget the "Walking Mall" area. A lot of Civil War history down it. Courthouse with the famous graffiti to Jeff Davis (now a Valley Civil War Museum), as well as larger famous homes used as hospitals. Great work spotlighting the town!

Gary and Sarah, y'all do such a wonderful job on these videos. Sarah, do you live near Winchester, the reason I ask is that you do such a wonderful job of interpretation of the action up and down here in the valley especially New Market. I myself am an A.B.T. member and my wife and myself appreciate all that you do. Always informative videos!

Outstanding presentation by Sarah and Garry. I stayed in Winchester during a 4 day tour of the Valley back in 2011. We covered the 1864 Campaign from New Market to Cedar Creek and by the end of each day, I retired to my hotel dog tired and didn't see much of the town, which by the what was shown here, I deeply regret. Will have to make it a point to return one of these days.

Excellent job on a great city every Civil War fan should visit at least once. A true shame not more of third Winchester is preserved but ABT did save the core area with its partners. Truly fascinating campaign that receives little attention. Working in Daniel Morgan and Cowpens is much appreciated! Of note fellow Continental Army general -not a huge fan- Horacio Gates was also a local resident. Will give Gary a pass on his obligatory Gettysburg mention😀

Many of the sketches come from The James E. Taylor Sketchbook, a marvelous aid in studying people and locations from the Sheridan vs. Early saga of the summer and fall of 1864, footnoted by a co-founder of today's American Battlefield Trust, Dennis Frye. Sarah is a marvelous historian.

Great tour! I grew up north of Winchester and didn't know of all these sites. Some other areas to look at next time you're in Winchester is the Taylor Hotel and Courthouse on Loudoun St. Both were hospitals. I suspect nearly every house in Winchester had cared for wounded at some time.

Great Job Sarah! Garry, Andy. I just got done reading a book about Mary Greenhow Lee, so recognize all the other citizens of Winchester mentioned in this video. Her house was on North Market Street at the time, I saw the sign there in the video but I guess the house is gone? Fascinating woman, and definitely a true Reb. lol The Secesh women of Winchester were a real handful for the Union soldiers and officers lol especially her. I don't have the book of hers and Chase's diaries, so that one will be added! I'll get to Winchester eventually.

I think there was NO humor in John Cain's final postscript about Lincoln - he obviously did not like Lincoln and was dead serious about putting him back to work to fix up the lands that Cain felt he was responsible for destroying. Not every Union soldier cared for "father Abraham".
