Ninja Warrior is easily the closest we have in spirit. It's like Gladiators without the combat element. It's a better designed show, for what it is, than Gladiators was, but I miss the old element. I still don't know why that vacuum isn't waiting to be filled, why a revival failed as early as the 2000s. I would think it would be a strong, timeless concept.

Man one time early in the series i saw nitro get almost knocked out cold. they had a former patriots practice squad fullback on there, and nitro got in his way in powerball. Nitro was standing upright, way too high, and got absolutely trucked. He got up and tried to finish but he was totally screwed. The other guy ran and dumped like 4 or 5 balls in on his side real quick. Ill never forget that one. Nitro is a pretty tough dude to get up from that on his own lol

The Gladiators had huge egos. Moat of them were former professional athletes. Nitro actually played for the Rams. He later on wrote successful books, one actually titled Roid Rage.

Yeah that was a pretty fun backhanded compliment. Of course Nitro was by far the smallest male Gladiator (despite injecting a truly reckless PED protocol just like the rest of them) so maybe there's a bit of psychology there. That dude is just crazy short, that's all. He looks damn well as impressive as Nitro, and comparing himself to the Pit bull terrier was obviously appropriate! I love Nitro and I love it when competitors get all badass like our "little" friend here!

I went to tryouts for this, and they angled the challenges for smaller, agile players so in the show, the contenders were always at a power deficit to make the Gladiators look more massive.
