Note: The video states, “Wild animal populations have shrunk.” The given figures reflect populations of 3,706 monitored species of vertebrates only (mammals, birds, fishes, amphibians, reptiles). Invertebrates are not included in the study. Access the study here: awsassets.panda.org/downloads/lpr_living_planet_report_2016_summary.pdf

Happy World Earth day 2017: Theme"Environmental & climate Literacy". Let's Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
@walthain
@walthain 7 жыл бұрын
The "inconvenient truth" overhanging the UN's Copenhagen conference is not that the climate is warming or cooling, but that humans are overpopulating the world. "It is also a great 'failure', that population growth has not been taken into account in the debate on climate change" (Renate Bähr, Geschäftsführerin der Deutschen Stiftung Weltbevölkerung, WELT ONLINE, November 2009).
@Furiends
@Furiends 7 жыл бұрын
This is actually true in a way. On the other hand Chinas one child policy is a good example of an actual measure taken. Humans are not actually a cancer. Our population does self regulate and for that reason if we do absolutely nothing about population it will eventually stop. What we have experienced over the past two centuries is a complete transformation of standard of living and healthcare. Humans have been socially conditioned to be fertile baby makers for centuries and this was important because only a few centuries ago 2 out of your 6 children would die before the age of 10. Fast forward after the industrial revolution and everything from marriage to the stigma to being single to you must have a baby before 30 or you're worthless all contributes to overpopulation. Because now if you have 6 kids all of them will likely have kids. A lot less people have kids now and a lot less people have as many kids and the reason for this is industrialization and after some amount of time cultural changes which can come on slowly causing population explosions or quickly which moderates this growth. So to solve overpopulation you need to employ both of those things everywhere that hasn't industrialized and for both overpopulation and saving the environment you want to shift to industrialization to be as fast as possible. So by this standard overpopulation is already solved. In terms of having the best bet of surviving climate change however we need to work hard and fast at industrializing the world mega fast and sharing technologies that reduce emissions like solar panels.
@walthain
@walthain 7 жыл бұрын
If we doe nothing the world population goes perhaps to 15 billion in the year 2100. The end of China's one child policy leads to about 400 million people more. We must proceed, the way of nature is unmerciful.
@Furiends
@Furiends 7 жыл бұрын
+walthain Some optimistic projections suggest there will never be a 12 billionth person. Our population growth will likely slow down just as fast as it sped up. It's a sharp S curve.
@walthain
@walthain 7 жыл бұрын
These projections are false. An increase of 0.4% per year (today 1.2%) up to 9.3 Billion in 2050 will be 11.4 billion in 2100. 1% will be 15.4 billion.
@Furiends
@Furiends 7 жыл бұрын
+walthain The rate of population growth is not constant. In the future the birthrate will be lower than it is today in developed countries but it will be higher in developing countries. If the countries stay in a period of low death rate but high birthrate their population will explode and all those born will go on to have kids as well. So if the rate at which a given countries rate of infant mortality goes down and subsequent birthrate goes down faster due to cultural changes and shorter industrialization periods then there will be less people born to have kids even at currently projected rates and if you parse that out thats a way larger factor than the rate per year itself which has so far been based on the steady industrialization and immigration of other countries. Including migration of high birthrate countries like Mexico to higher economic status countries like the US. However as more countries industrialize and have a higher economic status immigration will slow as with it. If for example only the US were industrialized then immigrants all around the world in highly over populated poor countries would attempt to migrate but if the entire world levels out its economic status then a major feedback loop in overpopulation stops because you can't simply move if your home gets over populated. There are other factors in this as well including that the process of new countries industrializing is accelerating exponentially because they now rely on the technology of other industrialized countries. So the US took almost a century to industrialize the remaining developing countries will take closer to a decade.

How can something like CFC's be so easy to ban, and yet doing the same to plastics isn't even considered?
@Swyfty_

Because the majority of plastics are incredibly cheap to produce and have so many uses. The benefits outweigh the risks at the moment.

@Furiends
@Furiends 7 жыл бұрын
Besides polluting oceans and killing sealife and being very unsightly on beaches plastics aren't really that destructive a pollutant while CFCs are. Most plastics discounting their plastisizers and additives are stable and inert. They could be buried in a landfill and not affect the environment at all. It's burning oil, land use change and factory farming that are extremely detrimental to the environment and climate change.

CFC's were not easy to ban. Conservatives and corporations fought that tooth and nail. Even Limbaugh the grinch made fun of banning CFC's saying that we couldn't hurt the planet if we tried.

ragna120k I think it's because most of the positive stuff about Earth Day were in the US anyway. Species like the Saudi gazelle were very unlikely to be saved in the first place even though it wouldn't have been to difficult to save sadly.

"We are a plague on the Earth. It’s coming home to roost over the next 50 years or so. It’s not just climate change; it’s sheer space, places to grow food for this enormous horde. Either we limit our population growth or the natural world will do it for us, and the natural world is doing it for us right now,” (Sir David Attenborough, January 21, 2013).

The thing is since the 1970 to today we have more Bankers, Big companies and Politics this are the first things to get off the world. Then you can start to celebrate a kind of Earth Day. The Earth don't need us. Earth day is a mockery in our days . Same old game, some new hippies become famous and that is all about. Selfish and Greediness... I prefer to call this day The HUMAN DAY, since we hare all here ship happens. I'm sure if they will create a hell of a Museum out of this. About this video It's all BS but huge BS

The US alone cannot make a difference. The 3rd world countries are going through industrial revolutions and are being given a pass. Education is needed well beyond our borders. On a lighter note, I was excited for the first Earth Day because I got to wear pants to school, not a skirt. :)

@Furiends 7 жыл бұрын
You're best bet to saving Earth isn't to recycle although thats important to its to reduce the amount of pollution you contribute to which mostly comes from the electricity you use, the gas you use in a car and the food you eat. Simply reducing those things is a good measure but also producing alternatives like solar panels for electricity, sustainable agriculture for food and electric cars to not use gas.
