in the UK the pedestrians have right of way over cars except on roads designated as Motorways where pedestrians are banned. It doesn't mean pedestrians are likely to throw themselves in front of you but if you hit one you may well face charges of dangerous or careless driving or failure to pay due care and attention. This is because you should be taking pedestrian priority into account. Careless driving is when you fall below the minimum standard expected of a careful driver and includes driving without reasonable consideration for other road users. Dangerous driving includes behaviour that could potentially endanger yourself or other drivers.

Hi guys, I think the reason council tax isn't paid for by the landlord is that there are lots of discounts for single and low paid or even it can be fully covered for elderly and unemployed. How much a discount depends on your assessed earnings. So not straight forward flat tax.

I live in Northern Ireland we do not have council tax the rest of the UK obviously does we still pay a single lump some for our water and waste collection etc I pay £600 a year for a three bed house (£60.00) PM

That's right, and understand that. We just wanted to share our thoughts. Due to everything being so expensive now a days would be nice for the owner of the home to be responsible is all. Because they're not losing money but possibly making money by letting someone live in their home. In the US, homeowners are responsible for all taxes on the land, house, school, and city amenities because that's keeps people wanting to stay renting their home.. Hope that makes sense. I get your point being that they can add it to the rent, but it can't be too outrageous in the US, or no one will rent from them if they jack the rent. Has to be within market (rent) value. If the home owner paid the council tax they would just increase the rent to pay for it, so the renter pays it one way or another.

The large majority of houses in the uk are freehold. Where you tend to see leasehold more is with flats but there are some houses that have it too.

Council tax doesn't pay for anything to do with your home though. It covers Police services, Fire Brigade services, refuse collection, libraries, park upkeep, road sweeping and other things in the area. I'm sure in the US, the home owner puts the rent up to cover the charge anyway, so can't see it makes much difference who ultimately pays for it.

The Cost of Living here in America compared to the UK has caught up. The American Dream is over...homes are just as outrageous as in the UK now. The lower middle class is being slowly squeezed out! Sad but true! Great vlog. I am from Boston, Massachusetts but been living in Florida since 1989. Even FLORIDA is now out of reach...was so cheap before. There is no more REASONABLE costs anymore. Everything goes up drastically except our paychecks..that goes down actually due to the a Over Inflation!

Think the wages and conditions of the majority of workers in the US is down to the people themselves, letting companies walk all over them, and not sharing enough of there profits. Always amazes me, an Englishman, how you allow this to happen. You seem to have no labor laws and are happy with that. I read somewhere that a person working in a McDonalds in the US got $9 to $10 an hour, can't remember if this included tips or not, an employee in Sweden was on the equivalent of $22 an hour. But y'all don't seem to mind your children being shot to death in school, because you want to keep the right to bear arms, absolute disgrace.

In Scotland all houses are freehold. It only seems to be in England that they are leasehold

I bought my Freehold house 30 years ago, I remember my dad advising me to buy a freehold home. He bought a leasehold house in 1963, but within 10 years he paid an affordable price to change to freehold.

Council tax covers soooo much more than just waste collection. It covers road maintenance, street lighting, traffic infrastructure, social care services, education, council housing, libraries, planning in the local area, parks and public spaces, community buildings, grass cutting etc etc etc. This is why the person living in a property pays council tax because they are benefiting from local services.

There is a big difference between Leasehold and Freehold. With Leasehold you can own the building/flat but not the land and have to pay Ground Rent to the land owner. Once the lease is up you will have to sign a new lease or offer to buy the land. If you want to make certain changes to the building you might have to get permission from the land owner as well as the local Council depending on the changes. With Freehold you own the land, not the Crown. This is where it becomes complicated as it depends on the type of land you bought whether or not you can or can not build on it. What type of buildings you can build and what they can be used for. For instance, you will have seen the overhead power lines but you won't see residential houses beneath them or within a hundred yards of them, but you can have industrial builds there. This is because of the ENF radiation given off by the power lines which can cause certain illnesses. Buying land here can be a headache.

Food waste does not have to go to landfill. Where I live it is used to make electricity. Those with gardens can compost uncooked vegetable peelings with their garden waste. The only time I have seen police involved with people crossing the road was on Oxford Street in London at Christmas. The police were asking people not to cross when the signal turned red for them as the road was be shut down for vehicles, some people still ignored the police. If the council tax was just paid by the Landlord and then added to the rent some people would pay more. Single people get 25% off and people on a low income can get discounts.

Here table scraps should go into your food waste bin which are lined with biodegradable bags. Those bags are collected weekly and go to the local council's composting station to be turned into compost. Council tax pays for all the local council services each household gets. Logically the renting householder should pay for the services they get not the owner of the property, unless the owner is the householder, of course.

Forget all this freehold stuff , the most important thing is the freehouse in pubs , a freehouse pub means that the owner owns the land and building but most important is that they are not controlled by a brewery so they can buy and sell any type of beer from any brewery etc and can buy any sprits etc from anywere , so on your travels look for the signs saying Freehouse on pubs

Most buildings are freehold ( you own the land). Leasehold is less usual and usually for 99 years and is often more common with flats.

Great video. The jay walking reference reminded me when my parents visited Orlando with some friends and stayed in their friends cousin's large house in Florida. My Dad decided one day rather than drive to the grocery store in their rented car they would explore the local area on foot as you do in the UK and ended crossing a huge six lane freeway which was a rather scary experience. I'm sure they would got busted by the local cops had there been any in the neighbourhood at the time. They stuck to using the car after that. Your little dog is very cute. Did you bring him over from the US?

I have always promoted home ownership to my sons. I bought my first home at 25 years old and my son bought his first home at 23years. I got him to save hard into a life ISA for 4 years which became his deposit. (Government contributes 25%) Most houses are freehold although leasehold is also quite common. Houses are mostly much cheaper in the north.

Council tax contributes to the budget of local government, but local authorities also get a lot of funding fron central government. Until the Thatcher government changed the system, homeowners paid "rates" (and if they let their house, the rent was adjusted to recoup that). The government believed that renters who didn't see the cost and standard of good management of their local government were not fully informed when there was an election and too much of the cost then fell on homeowners potentially for services that they didn't get. So poll tax, then the current council tax put the tax directly on residents, whether homeowners or tenants. Of course it was also a way to reduce the tax burden on the weathiest homeowners with the most valuable homes...

Council Tax (Community Charge) is a tax on a single household, split into bands based on house/area. It's predecessor Poll Tax was tax on every adult in that household and was seriously disliked. 2 adults with 2 grown up children, were ALL liable, and it didn't depend on house/area - even though they shared the same council services. Shared rental and a few other exceptions exist, where Landlord is liable.

Hi both! If your interested this idea of feeding farm animals from the table and kitchen leftovers was pretty standard up until the 90’s as you said. up to the 60’s and into the 70’s it was known that at the end of RAF and Army camps there used to be small piggeries which thrived on the stations Messes scraps collected into food bins handed to the farmer on a regular basis. Mind you most of this was anecdotal information but it helped the mess managers budgets. Our pet dogs in the UK were always fed from the table with the Brits attitude for the menu of meat and three veg, just add extra for the dog or cat and they were totally healthy of course no extra salt etcetera. Interesting question have noticed how many colours of egg there are over here?? Well there is at least 3! White, brown an shockingly blue.

Vauxhall were bought by GM in 1926, they also owned the German car maker Opel. Not sure when they acquired Opel, but I think it was post WW2, before GM sold them both about10 years ago. Different models are made in different factories, so some Vauxhalls are built in Germany, and some Opels are built in Britain. I've never heard of a house with a garden being sold separately. Freehold and Leasehold usually refers to rental property

GM bought Opel in 1929. The last Vauxhall car built in the UK was the previous generation Astra, in Ellesmere Port. The EP factory now builds vans for Stellantis (similar to the Luton factory which has only made vans for the last 20 years). All Vauxhall cars are now imported, mainly from Germany and Spain.

When sourcing items for upcycling try local auctions commercial prices for furniture and any that need work go for next to nothing, shpock, and freecycle, freecycle allows people to give away unwanted items so for no money you save landfill and collect items for re use. also by putting small ads in village shops or newsagents you may build networks that know what you do. Freecycle would be best for you as it's free so the only costs will be collection and materials. All the best.

Leasehold. No, you don't own the property. You own the lease. That is: you own the right to use the property for a certain period of time as specified in the lease. Lease hold houses - in recent times - are a bit of a scam. Leasehold flats/apartments are a different matter, but there can still be problems.

Houses in general are Freehold, you own the house and land, flats, apartments are leasehold, for obvious reasons, 99 year leases seem the norm, a factor in the price of buying a lease hold property would be the remaining length of the existing lease. Also cheaper wooden built housing, including cheap wood roof shingles, which seem to be the main building materials used in the States are not really built in the UK, most houses are stone or brick with stone, slate or concrete roofs that last alot longer than shingles. My house is built in Yorkshire stone with a Yorkshire stone slate roof, it's semi detached 4 beds 1 bath in Bradford, nothing fancy, it was built circa 1860, 3 years ago i had the stonework repointed and last year the roof replaced, for the first time since it was built, this is one of the reasons UK houses are so expensive, there built to last from quality materials. Housing in all capital cities around the world will be very expensive i would think, same as properties in the countryside.

Home ownership has changed a lot over the last 20 years. I think the average age of the first time home buyer in that time has gone from 23 to 37 I believe. Btw you do not need to pay for a TV license unless you watch any live tv broadcasts or bbc iplayer.

Frankly I as a poor pensioner think £165 for a full 12 months of BBC local radio, 6? national radio stations and 4 nationwide TV stations ALL without any advertising is an absolute bargain. I do have SKY (which costs a fortune) but only watch it 'recorded' as the ads are infuriating and 90% of the channels are rubbish. The other watchable ones are often older BBC programmes!

The only roads that you’re not allowed to walk across are the Motorways of course ! North America is one of the very few areas of the world that wash their eggs and this uses 600 million gallons of fresh water every year plus the costs of thousands of extra staff for this and keeping them refrigerated all the way to the shops. These costs are passed on to the consumer of course !

Here's a UK law that contrasts with the USA. While driving, there's no legal requirement to carry your driving licence or any form of identification. If the police stop a motor vehicle there's a requirement you give them your name and address. (They have access to the national driving licence database which include a photo). In some European countries everyone must carry their ID. In the UK that requirement was rapidly ditched after World War 2 as a matter of national pride when everyone had to carry a National Identity Card.

UK here, have always given my hens food scraps but you cannot sell them. No not right about leasehold and freehol We are freehold and own our home and land. Leasehold, someone else owns the property and you " buy" the lease. Minimum wage is £10+ not less.and is legislated and mandated.

There are lots of laws here in the UK that are different from the USA - the elephant in the room would be gunlaws - lots of people in the USA think we can't own guns - we can - but it is highly regulated . MOT laws - Ministry of Transport makes it an offence to drive vehicles that are considered to be unroadworthy .Helmet's are compulsory for riders of motorcycles but not bicycles - and then we have obscure laws that were never rescinded - shooting a Scotsman entering York after sunset - how I still get away with that I don't know but I've never been caught .There are lots more oddities in British law .

Hygiene with egg production is poor in the USA with hens close together and this results in the eggs getting so dirty they have to be washed. They wash them in chlorine and completely strip the protective layer. UK egg production is much more hygienic and washing is unnecessary.

At one time approx 70% of people owned their own home in the UK. I believe that has dropped to the low 60"s. In France 70% of people rent their homes . Homeownership is not such a big deal there .

There are so many laws on the books that have never been rescinded due to how long laws have been made from...however if an obscure law is used from lets say the 21th century its usually removed from the books...

The renter will pay tax one way or another, either directly or through higher rent, so it's a moot point. In the states with property taxes, the state will take your land if you don't pay tax, so do you actually own it?

This was just us sharing options, not an attack on one being better than the other at all. I feel both Countries could learn from each others successes and failures! In the US, it's the homeowners responsible for the property and all dwellings on it. When we pay property tax, it is to the state, not the federal government. Yes, the state can retake your land, but it is not as easy as depicted. Also, the tax is paid through your mortgage, not a separate bill. As here in the UK, if you don’t pay your whole year’s Council Tax within 7 days, the council may take legal action to get the Council Tax you owe by sending a bailiff or remove you from the property. I’ve noticed it happening here and I am sure it will happen in the states, banks and investment funds are buying houses to rent out this means home ownership is going to become increasingly difficult for private individuals. I think renting in both countries will become more and more common. What chance does the next generation have to get on the property ladder if the property prices are being propped up by the banks themselves? 😢

Hand ,Foot and Mouth disease is a medical condition which affects young children and is VERY different from Foot and Mouth disease which affects cloven hooved animals mainly pigs and cattle . It is extremely contagious and a serious outbreak like the one which affected the UK some years ago involves the slaughter and cremation of - literally - millions of animals . It is hugely traumatic to the farming community and seeing the skies lit up by hundreds of funeral pyres every night is distressing to anyone witnessing such scenes even from afar. It was very common practise for farmers to collect food waste from restaurants and hotels - boil it - and then feed to their pigs . Now totally banned which increases the waste going to landfill with the associated rats , gulls , flies , smells etc .

Jaywalking doesn’t exist in the UK, it’s called “crossing the road”. The only place you cannot cross is a Motorway or other area restricted by the Highway Code. On normal road’s, pedestrians,horses, cyclists etc have as much right to use them as cars do. British freedom 🇬🇧😎

Actually, pedestrians, pedal cyclists, horseriders and horsedrawn vehicles have MORE right to use the roads than do cars etc. Motorists and their vehicles must have special permissions (taxes, licenses, etc) to legally use the roads, but the non-motorised use the roads _as of right_ . Which is only as it should be.

The sketch map is tilted over to the right (at the top) compared with Due North which is false as the most Southern point in England is actually in Cornwall and the most Southerly point in Scotland is the Mull of Galloway, which, to add insult to injury, is missing as well! (I was brought up 21.9 miles North of there). Not your fault and actually quite a common fault (I did Higher Geography and it annoys me especially as a Scot, Grr). There are no UK national regulations or rules preventing you keeping up to fifty hens, however there are some regulations to check first. There are occasionally By-laws or other restrictions for certain properties. Do check with the local Council and with your house deeds.

Council tax has nothing to do with rent. It is to pay for your public services such as street lighting, rubbish collection, police, fire service, public libraries, local council services. Hence why it is called a tax.

Why should the landlord pay for your public library, public sports facilities, gritting the road past your house in the winter etc, when he will never use those services ? He may not even live in the UK, so won’t even pay tax here, let alone use anything that council tax covers. I agree that rental prices here are horrendous, but if the landlord had to pay the council tax too, guess how he would recoup that expense ?

Boris Johnson, the former Prime Minister was born in New York when his parents lived there for a few years. If he returned to the USA and lived there for a minimum number of years he could run for President. On the thing about washing chicken eggs. The USA has lower welfare standards than the European Union (and UK). When a flock is changed in Europe all bedding must be removed and everywhere cleaned/sterilised. In the US a flock can be changed and new bedding put down on top of the old. Hence there's a chance of disease remaining and being transmitted to the new flock. Bigger risk of contaminated eggs which need refrigerating to stop disease developing.

I've met Americans who were based in Norfolk military bases and boasted about how much better life was within the base - American food, paid for in dollars at American prices, often subsidised by the military, with American cinema, a mall, a bowling alley etc. I think he said they even drive on the right! Goodness knows how that worked. This was 1990's and his wife was a Very Big Cheese in organising things for the first Gulf War, and he worked in IT with his 'very good pal', Ross Perot before moving for his wife's career ... ie the cliché American 'everything is bigger and better in America', so no need to have much to do or investigate in the country you are living in. I know FAR more Americans that are good friends, good people, and have married family members etc - 999 are great but that 1 kinda sticks in your mind!

Residents of the UK and the US live in homes designed primarily according to the climate and code needed for that location. The home in the US homes can not be designed to withstand tornadoes sadly due to them having to be underground (most people prefer not to have an underground home)..... Much like here, flooding and landslides are natural disasters that ruin homes and devastate villages/ towns. Unfortunately, all are uncontrollable and horrible devastations, to say the least! I do love the architecture here and appreciate it so much. It's like comparing apples to oranges. You just can't do it.

If yu sell someone a dud car without declaring it you could be liable afterwards for anything that happens or subsequent repairs. An MOT failure should be fixed before the garage will release the car to you.

@@DaydreamersBarn Depends on the reason for failure as you cannot drive the car away with a certain level of failure.These are defects with an immediate impact on both road safety and the environment. A single dangerous fault will result in an automatic fail. The vehicle cannot then be driven until the fault has been remedied and an MOT pass certificate has been issued. If the testing centre that issued the dangerous fault cannot repair the vehicle, it must be transported via a tow truck, low loader or similar to an alternative place of repair. Once repaired, the vehicle must then be transported back to the MOT testing centre.

Although The Crown owns some land it is a tiny proportion of the whole. Not sure where you got that one from. 🤔😉 Also, on land, the overwhelming majority of properties are Freehold, not Leasehold. The amount we Brits pay for the NHS through our taxes compared to what the average American pays for their private healthcare is, from what I have seen, about 60%. And the NHS covers everyone whereas in the US healthcare is, I understand, only really available to those who actually have insurance. And even then usually have to pay something through Co-Pay. I know which I prefer. 😊

The information we found under your legal system, the Monarch, as head of state, owns the superior interest in all land in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. In most cases, this is usually irrelevant, but it can become relevant if a freehold property becomes ownerless. Has happened to a friend, unfortunately. I have not been treated or seen by the NHS. I'm just saddened for a couple of friends of mine having to wait a long time for needed surgeries. The US health care is not the best, I agree, but I don't think any have it 100% right.. In the US, they can not turn someone away or put them on a waiting list for a needed treatment. Emergency Medical Treatment Active Labor Act (EMTALA). The EMTALA was enacted to prevent hospital staff from turning away patients because of their inability to pay, which is illegal. In practice any income from ownerless property goes to The State, I.e. the Government. The office of The Crown often appears in legal matters as it has its roots way back in history when the Monarch was the ultimate authority in their own, personal right. For instance, criminal cases are either Rex (Latin for King) or Regina (Latin for Queen) versus the defendant/accused even though, of course, the Monarch plays no part in the proceedings. It is similar to the US system which, I understand, is often 'The People' instead.

I've never understood what jaywalking was! I'm shocked that you are required/expected to cross a road at specific areas in US cities. In fairness, in the busiest parts of cities - think Oxford Street, London - crossings are undoubtedly better, quicker and safer but outside that ... just cross if it's safe to do so. Even on Oxford Street car drivers should expect someone to be stupid and walk in front of them - it is their responsibility not to hit a pedestrian, given a reasonable chance.

The cost of a house in the UK is not able to be compared with the cost of a house in America. Taking the cost of the land out of the equation, the cost of the fabric of the houses in the UK isn’t comparable with those in America. Historically British houses have been built in stone or brick and slate or tiled roofs; expensive but obviously worth it. Internal walls were also solidly built although nowadays construction methods are changing. American houses have traditionally been built with wooden frames and not so solid internal walls and wooden shingles for roofs. Even within the UK some people prefer to buy older houses because they believe they were built more solidly. As for American houses, it’s worth taking note of what happens every year in Florida when a storm or hurricane hits. Why be surprised when every year the houses fall and fly away like matchsticks. It’s as if they’ve never heard of the story of the three little pigs with their houses made of straw, sticks and bricks.🪵🧱
