The reason the top of Thors Cave is drier, as that the soil above the rock is thin. Interestingly the rock itself is carboniferous limestone. It is also called reef limestone, as way back in the earth's history the rocks were coral reefs, made up of crushed sea creatures ( and may have fossils of them), from a time when the land/sea was in a position nearer the equator, in shallower waters. Limestone is a porous rock which let's water leak through it, which is why there are so many caves further north. Others have mentioned Eyam (pronounced Eem) the plague village, which has a sad history about courageous villagers that isolated themselves in an attempt to stop the plague spreading. It's another beautiful area where the hill overlooking the village 'Sir William Hill (no joke) marks the point where limestone changes to gritstone, and you can see the heather moorlands in the distance. You can also drive quite close to the top near a pub called The Barrel Inn. Another fact: the limestone area is called 'The White Peak' and the gritstone area 'The Dark Peak' so named for the colour of the rock. Still loving your excusions in our country, and now yours through adoption!😀

We live within an hour's drive from the peak district and love Edale, Matlock, Matlock Bath and Bakewell. We also love the many walks and trails, stone circles and White Peak. The Tissington trail is worth a visit, as well as the Mam Tor area. My wife's sister lives in Bolsover, which is just a few minutes drive from the Peak District, and loves it, a great place for walking her dogs especially. We used to take our caravan to the hills above Matlock for long weekend stays. Not far from there is Cromford where a textile mill was built next to the river to use water powered machinery, it is thought to be the first organised factory system in the world, it was developed by a famous British engineer, textile maker and entrepreneur Richard Arkwright in the late 18th Century (1796). To supply enough workers, he built dwellings for the them on site. It is now a museum open for visits. It is worth a visit to see the whole complex and infrastructure: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cromford_Mill

You were so close to the stepping stones at Dovedale and nearby Thorpe cloud is worth a hike up. My favourite town in Derbyshire is Bakewell, it's so pretty. Just a mile or two north of Bakewell is a small village called Ashford in the water. Picture postcard, but not much happening except the Ashford Arms pub is a great place for a pub lunch, doubly so when the weather allows you to eat out in the garden near the river. Just a few miles east of Bakewell is Chatsworth house, one of the greatest country houses in the country with spectacular gardens and fountain.

Great video, and of the area of the Peak District (the lower-lying "White Peak", named for the limestone) that was the nearest national park to where I was brought up in neighbouring Leicestershire. Walked all that area - you really don't see the best of the White peak from the roads at all, as you saw when you were up on the tops looking down over the lovely Manifold valley. That and the Dove valley are just beautiful, especially when you are walking alongside the rivers in the deep valleys. You were asking for thoughts on the Peak district? You'll realise that you only really scratched the surface at the bottom corner, so if you are interested in some wider area personal thoughts for if you manage it again, well here's an attempt! From where you live, anything more than the lower White Peak area that you visited is probably more than a day trip, though. When I was young, living a lot nearer (near Oakham that you went to a few weeks ago - loved that video!), even then we struggled to make it up to the higher and arguably often much more scenic north and west of the park. Yes, being the nearest national park when I was young, I'm pretty familiar with all of it. Especially the area you went to. The highlight, perhaps - if very busy with tourists - is Dovedale. You can park just under a mile from Ilam (you drove past the country park - also great) and the walk up the deep, steep, wooded dale is magnificent! You can walk for as many miles as you choose up the dale, but then you have to get back! Or you can do a longer walk by cutting across to the beautiful Manifold Valley and walking back to Ilam - but parts are private land so you have to go over the hills more. The upper part of the Manifold valley, ending at Thor's Cave, are the best IMO. The moral of the White Peak is to get out of the car and walk, as you did! But there is SO much more to the Peak district!! Go a bit further north, and you get to the lovely area west of Sheffield. More wooded, lovely views especially from the gritstone "edges", towns like Bakewell and the fantastic Chatsworth House (featured in so many period dramas!). I think Eyam village is a "must see". If you are not already aware, google its story, and you will see the staggering sacrifice the village made. Walking round the village really brings it home to you. LOADS to see round this area! Go west, and the land gets much higher, and with some sweeping high moor views and more wonderful scenic valleys. "The Roaches" is an easy but scenic rocky edge walk on the edge of the Peak district, with views into the hills one side, and down over the plain the other. But it gets better as you drive the high roads across Axe Edge (and below it, the upper Dove valley is really scenic) or the Cat and Fiddle to Buxton, an interesting spa town (as is Matlock, further East). The high ground west of Buxton is one of my favourite areas, and you can see this area well from the car. More great wooded valleys, and some amazing sweeping views to the west across the Cheshire plain. On a clear day, you can see well into a lot of Wales, and the massive Jodrell bank telescope in the middle of the plain. Your usual strategy of driving the byways more than the highways is ideal round this area, as indeed it is throughout most of the park. And then, further north, you get to the "Dark Peak", also known as the High Peak". Much qualifies as "mountains" here, dominated by the massive gritstone peat plateaus of Kinder Scout, Bleaklow and Black Hill. Few roads, but very scenic when the weather is decent! The area around (admittedly very touristy) Castleton is a "must" for the amazing limestone caves (you are at the northern tip of the White Peak here) and the spectacular Winatts Pass (you've driven Cheddar Gorge - this is similar). And then over the Mam Tor Saddle. The views from Mam Tor, and along the ridge - easy, high-level walking - on a decent day are superb, as they are if you make the climb up the start of the "Pennine Way" from Edale to the Kinder Scout plateau edge). On a really clear day, you can see Snowdonia from the high ground up here. Edale is the start of the "Pennine Way" long-distance trail, and where the Pennines proper start. It follows the high ground of the Pennines (passing within walking distance of where I live), and then the Cheviots all the way to the Scottish border. And the scenic Snake Pass road, with the very scenic Derwent valley side-trip, gives you perhaps the best idea of this highest part of the park. It used to be a regular winter weather announcement, when the Snake Pass was closed by snow. Happens less nowadays given we get less snow - nowadays it is more likely landslips! The far north of the park, as you get towards Yorkshire, has sweeping views but can often be quite bleak - because of the dark gritstone and the peat bog plateaus and relative lack of trees. It can be unpleasant and dangerous walking, especially in mist! But, now living in Yorkshire, this is now our route into the park. The Dark, often depressing Gritstone carries on beyond the park. It only gives way again to the much more uplifting Limestone, around where the Pennine Way passes just west of us, as it approaches the next National Park (Yorkshire Dales). But when you look at the map, and see how the park is surrounded by the great conurbations of Manchester, West Yorkshire and Sheffield, and with big cities like Stoke, Derby and Nottingham to the south, and with tens of millions of people living within an hour or so of entering the park, It always amazes me just how much space and scenery and beauty there is! Hope that was not too long a ramble - sorry if my enthusiasm ran away a bit!

We were very excited to see the Peak District, as it has been on our list since we have been here. We realized it was only a part that we saw, but reading all the different areas there are to see from what you put, makes us want to go back sooner rather than later. We will have to make that something we need to do, not sure which part the next one will be but it is on the list to return for sure. We will try and see where we can get on a day trip, otherwise depending on the time it will take us, it might have to be a couple of days. As always, thanks for the kind words and recommendations. Great video. I have stayed many times near the Dovedale stepping stones you missed and walked over some of the White Peak area, though have not visited Thor's cave. Go back 100-200 years and much of what you see would be covered by industry, especially mineral mines and those industries processing the ores. Natures reclaims it's own given the time needed. You did well to navigate the narrow lanes without screaming! Our definition of a little used lane, is one with grass growing down the middle. It still is not safe to speed, because a hidden gateway may suddenly disgorge a tractor, or the local vet, tired after assisting on a complex birth. Thanks for taking the trouble to explore the real heart of England.

Hi guys! I was born in Scotland (Edinburgh), grew up in New Zealand (Christchurch) and have lived 20 years in the North West of England. In the first year of my UK stay, I first visited the Peaks with a lovely friend from work called Magda. She was Polish and always eager to explore anywhere in the UK. We took a train to Buxton and walked several miles, through Bakewell (where we picked up some Tarts) to the grounds of Chatsworth House. If the surrounding landscape was incredible (which it was) the grounds of Chatsworth were unbelievable, showing what 500 years of planned and deliberate landscaping could achieve. When we finally got to the house (Palace) it blew us away. There were so many historical artifacts that were just the junk that a family accumulates (If they are fabulously rich.) On a back stairwell for servants, dimly lit under a 60 watt bulb we discovered a centuries old Tintoretto painting. This was not behind glass or anything, we could literally have smeared peanut butter on it - it was just something the family had stored out of the way. I was overwhelmed by the historical significance of everything very quickly (a full size Venetian gondola and a 5000 year old Egyptian memory Stele caught my attention, as did the sculpture gallery and the indoor Orangery) and I rested in an old wooden armchair in one of the corridors. It was only after I got up that I noticed the discreet label on the wall beside it. I had been sitting in George III's Coronation Throne. Why was it here? You can believe I went back, both to Chatsworth and the Peak District on many occasions.

If you look over the river Manifold from Thors cave you should be able to see a trail below you that is super for cycles as it is perfectly flat because it used to be a railway line. When my dad was a kid the tracks were still there so they would ride their bikes on one of the steel rails. Apparently it was easy once you got going. Lovely video.

Never actually saw the river in full flow though, it goes under ground and rises again in Isam Hall grounds. What I did see, though nobody believes me was a Crows Court (look it up) .One early mornig I was walking in a field adjacent to the road when I heard the most awful din, I peered carefully over the dry stone wall, and there it was, a big circle of crows squawking at one solitary crow in the middle. Only got a few seconds before i was detected and they all flew off. I am in my mid 70's now and live in Crich so I hope you will give the Tramway museum a look when you come back it is worth a visit. So chuffed you came to my patch, and the weather cleared up very nicely. I remember Ashbourne very well, actually mostly at this time of year, with besoms(traditional brooms) for sale, the market full of goodies, the faint smell of woodsmoke and a tang of gunpowder...oh and some fantastic steak and ale pies. I love seeing all your discoveries, but I knew the Peak District with its rolling hills and dry stone walls would tickle you pink. The whole Park is a treat, so wherever you go, you can't really go wrong, dark peak or white peak(defined by the local stone, millstone grit for the dark, limestone for the white). Eyam, plague village. Chatsworth House gardens, grounds with Edensor village and farm shop. Bakewell, the original Bakewell puddings. Castleton, the only place in the world to produce a type of fluorite called Blue John, with several caverns/caves you can visit. Haddon Hall and gardens. Ladybower reservoirs. Oh so many villages, walks, stone circles you name it, we have it!

I went to primary school close to Ashbourne in the 1960's, and our headmaster was a born and bred Peak District devotee. It was a very small rural school and every week he'd take the whole class out there in the ancient school van. We loved the stepping stones at Dovedale and regularly climbed Thorpe Cloud, using the mackintoshes we brought in case it rained as sledges to slide back down. Ilam was another favourite place for us to visit, and Eyam, the famous plague village, and of course Tissington for the annual well-dressing. I've lived all over the world in the many years that have passed since then but never forgot the stunningly beautiful Peak District, finally returning a few years ago to my Ashbourne roots and retirement in God's own country. Beautiful video, thank you.

That was a beautiful trip, one that you will cherish forever. You always seem to get the best weather. It is amazing that when you consider the small size of the British Isles, the population and large cities, there is still so much open countryside. May it always be that way. I agree with Collette that climbing up is fine, it is the descent that is perilous. I am sure that you have noticed this when climbing narrow, steep, steps to a church belfry. Thank you for sharing your lovely family's journey with us.

That certainly gave the lungs a decent workout. The Peak district is stunning, but the Lake District really does eclipse it....I think I mentioned before in one of your reviews, that the Lake District really is "Heaven on Earth", so much so, that when I retire in the next couple of years, we will be house hunting, probably around the Windermere/Bowness areas. Far be it from me to tell you where you should venture, but you really do need to have a holiday in the Lakes for at least 3 days to have a good look and get in some hiking with the most breathtaking views you'll ever see....oh, and a day pass boat trip on Windermere is a must, where you can disembark for the aquarium, or a picturesque steam train ride through stunning countryside. If I continue trying to sell it, the Lake District Tourist Board may have to reward me with some Shekels🤣🤣

I remember about 40 years ago when I used to deliver all over the country, I remember being on a main road on the left side of the country, and tuning right, over either a railway or water, it didn't seem like a normal road, it was as if I was entering somewhere different, you know like when you see those white gates as you enter somewhere, like a national park. I think I was ether going to, or ended up in Buxton, and some of the views were absolutely breathtaking, similar to being in the lake district. I've been up that way a few times since trying to find the route I took that day, but it just hasn't happened. It's one of a few journeys that really sick in my memory, even 40 years later. Another one was when I was in Lancaster, and I had to go to a place called Kirkby Stephen, I asked some old bloke the way, and he said "Do you want to take the fast route, or the scenic route?" I opted for the scenic route, and that was another special drive, especially for somebody who has lived his whole life in West London.

The Peak District. I think that I first went there on a school geology/geography field trip to the area around Castleton & Mam Tor, when ice and snow were all around, struggling up icy paths, finding lead mining spoil rocks with veins of Galena, (lead ore) Fluorspar, Feldspar and Blue-John. Climbing Mam Tor, and rolling back down the snowy slope. Seeing U shaped valleys carved by glaciers, long since melted. I have been there many times since. Enjoy your travels! Bye!

The Peak District has so much more for you to see and you have to return and see as much as you can. I live in Sheffield right next door to the Peak District, in fact part of the national park lies within Sheffield's city boundary. You should try to visit places such as Castleton with its four caverns (two of which you can visit,) Castleton is the ONLY place in the world where the mineral Blue John is mined and turned into jewellery and ornaments etc. One of the caverns you can visit is right in the village of Castleton and is called the Peak Cavern, but it has another unofficial name - "The Devil's Arse." Also there is a stately home - Chatsworth - and another house - Haddon Hall - both near the small market town of Bakewell, which itself is famous for its puddings and tarts. Chatsworth and Haddon Hall have both been used by film and tv companies as locations. The village of Eyam ( pronounced Eeem) voluntarily quarantined itself when it was stricken by the plague that arrived in a consignment of cloth from London. It made a conscious decision to cut itself off from the outside world so as not to allow the plague to spread, in some cases entire families were wiped out. Again, worth visiting. Plus many more places to see - you wouldn't be disappointed. I think you and your family Jess, are we Britons favourite family. Your enthusiasm Jess, for all that you see, knows no bounds. And if it was within our power - which unfortunately it isn't - you wouldn't be going back to the States.... we wouldn't let you - we'd keep you here forever.

This area was our 'stamping ground' - it is a mere half hours drive from home and the walking can easily compare with the lake district. The most popular places, such as the River Dove get so crowded in the summer months it's best to give them a miss, or go mid-week. The Monsall trail follows the old track-bed of the former London - Manchester railway, it is spectacularly beautiful and an endless number of circular walks can be accessed from it - we've done most of them. The Well Dressings are a Derbyshire tradition and not to be missed as each village tries to outdo each other with their floral displays. These are made up of flowers and greenery set in clay at each well. I see you are about to leave us and go back to the USA, so thanks for the vids and your appreciation of our beautiful countryside - you've probably seen more on your travels than most Brits manage in a lifetime.

The Yorkshire Dales (especially; no fast road) and North Yorkshire Moors are more difficult, although it’s easy enough to get to the Lake District. I live about 45 mins out from the Peak District and have to say the Peaks are probably my favourite place in the world i particularly love the area around Mam Tor / Castleton where the Hope Valley and Edale wrap around Mam Tor . For our American vistors there is a place of interest close to Chatsworth House the village Edensor has the final resting place of Kathleen "kick" Kennedy elder sister of JFK in the church cemetery there . There are epic walks everywhere throughout the Peaks walks that suit all peoples abilities

Monsal Head provides a great money shot. You're looking down a green valley with a viaduct in the distance and one or two pretty cottages in between. There's a pub, tea rooms and walking trails right by the best vantage point and think of the drone footage. Matlock Bath is a nice stop off for fish n chips and souvenir shopping. It's like a seaside village without the sea, it does have a river though.

I like to visit all of the standing stones (and some are not standing now like Arbour Low). There are loads of bronze age remains like small burial chambers and marked stones.

Hiya Jesse, Chris and the gang. Loved your visit to the Peak District. Many moons ago (early to mid seventies) when I was in high school, we would often go on Geography field trips to the 'Peaks' and believe it or not, but due to fashion at this time and the age of, glam rock, many pupils would actually turn up in very high platform shoes, boys and girls. The teachers would scold them but we think they got some level of satisfaction watch them struggling when trying to navigate the footpaths etc 😂. If you get chance to go back there, check out, Castleton the blue john mines etc, you will love it as,always, massive thanks, give those beautiful dogs of yours a big hug from me ❤ Take care, Tony here in the UK 🇬🇧

Friend, I have given our pups a big cuddle from you. We loved our time exploring the Peak District. I'm sure the teachers loved but also disliked seeing them struggling. We have had many people recommend those to us, and I'm working on planning a trip. We really appreciate your love and support! 🤍 Jess x

I love how you've realised that the lesser known areas contain the best surprises. I live in the westcountry and can think of loads of such places for you to explore. Also, you go a long way to restoring my faith in American sensibilities .

I used to live in Ashbourne, you missed out all the beautiful places there, dovedale, all the walking trails through gorgeous scenery, tissington trail etc, the Peak District starts there, further up is the High Peak which has a different type of scenery

What a beautiful area, I haven't been around that way since I was a kid way back. Loved the on screen info that you posted, especially interesting was the total length of the dry stone walls. Have you ever looked at how they were built? Some of them are thousands of years old. There's probably loads of short vids around. Maybe you could build one back in Michigan if you ever get a few minutes to spare but you look like a busy lot:)
