@@DaydreamersBarn , lots of Norman castles in Wales, more so the North . Don't know if you saw just how high the bridges were going over to Anglesey but the reason is that the Royal Navy insisted on it so their big warships could sail down the channel so avoiding going around the island and the bad weather in the Irish Sea , the channel is so fast and narrow even the great Nelson didn't like going down it . If you ever go down to Portsmouth go to the Historical Docks , it's full of historical buildings ( you know the British , if something has worked don't knock it down as it might come handy later, plus save money 😂 ) you will see HMS VICTORY and King Henry's Vlll battle ship Mary Rose, plus there is there is a iron ship HMS Warrior that's the first iron battle ship . All are worth a visit .

Great road trip guys. I was hoping you were going to turn off the duel carriageway and go through Conwy as you drove straight past it. I see from the other comments you were were pushed for time though which is a pity. It's an ancient walled town with a truly spectacular castle, really worth a visit. Though I'm not welsh, I always feel so at home and at ease when I'm in Wales, especially the north, probably comes from the many long summer holidays spent there in my childhood. Almost feels like a second home I try to get at least one long break there each year and numerous shorter ones/day trips. Glad you got to experience and appreciate it's dramatic Beauty

You tend to think about holidays as a child with warm nostalgia and only remember the best bits. I expect it's human nature to subconsciously blot out the parts that you didn't enjoy like the wet days. I do remember carrying a 'pac-a-mac' (a tightly folded plastic raincoat) as a child.

Forty years ago I worked in North Wales before the new Penmaenhead tunnel was cut, when traffic in both directions had to use the single-lane road round the headland through those two short tunnels. In summer the traffic was an absolute nightmare. All the alternative routes via Betwys-y-Coed were even worse!

An English comment here. I was born in the old County of Cheshire, and I've quite often visited North Wales, my aunt retiring there. I'm really interested in the Welsh language, and I would encourage you to be. At least half a million people still speak it as a mother tongue. Now, most languages of Europe, Iran, and northern India are very distantly related in the 'Indo-European' language phylum, but that's as close as English and Welsh get; for English is a Germanic language, and Welsh is a Celtic language. In Welsh the sentence starts with the verb; quite a lot of grammar depends on the front of the word changing, rather than the back, so the Welsh word for Wales 'Cymru', can appear as 'Gymru', or even 'Nghymru'! This makes looking up a Welsh word in a dictionary problematic! This is further complicated by the fact that certain pairs of letters, such as 'll'', 'ch', or 'rh', are treated as separate letters. The language is phonetically spelt, but includes non-English sounds. 'Y' and 'w" are vowels. Did you notice that even on the road surface there are bilingual messages, e.g. 'ARAF SLOW ', meaning the same thing? I often watch KZbin videos by the 'Welsh Viking', who has a very scholarly interest in re- enactment; but he also discusses Welsh, which he pronounces as it should be pronounced, as a native Welsh speaker.
@DaydreamersBarn

We have been fascinated by the Welsh language since the first time we went. That was something we picked up on right away, with the bilingual message. We thought that was a very cool fact about the country. Thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers, Chris and Jess.

The Daffodil, national flower of Wales, the Leek must be the national vegetable. As a long distance lorry driver i used to run up and down the A55 regular, between Yorkshire and South Wales if it worked out time wise i would park up for the night in the mountains, on what is known as the Mach Loop, your hubby will know of this i would think, it's a flight path the RAF and other military aircraft use for training, you need to see the film of this for yourselves, especially where the planes are below the camera, there on you tube. Nice video.

At 15:54 you can see on the left the original road that went round the headland, now just a footpath. My Dad used it in the 1930s until the tunnel was built. It wasn't even wide enough for two vehicle to pass each other. But there was a lot less road traffic then. The town of Conwy had huge traffic jams until recent decades. All traffic had to crawl through the narrow main streets. A long twin tunnel was built bypassing the town (the built tunnels were floated out into position and sunk across the estuary).

However, if you really want to see some VERY spectacular scenery, get across the channel and drive to Switzerland to “nip” over the Swiss/French/Italian Alps. Whenever you have some spare family time... I can highly recommend a much longer stay in North Wales... There are some really lovely holiday lettings available for hire... Which are big enough to accommodate the whole family... And where you can explore the area at your leisure... And all without having a long drive back home... You could spend the week visiting several of the historical castles in North Wales... Such as... Caernarfon Castle... Conwy Castle... Harlech Castle... Beaumaris Castle... Another recommendation... Would be to visit Portmeirion... This delightful little private village was built in a Mediterranean style... There's a small charge for entry which obviously pays for the upkeep of this beautiful little village... It was also the setting for the classic 1960's British TV show called "The Prisoner"... I would also recommend a day out at Cad East or Cad West... Also known as the Mach Loop... This is where aircraft from various nations... Will train their pilots low level flying skills there... Spectators can see a huge variety of military aircraft flying at 500 feet and at 500 knots... It can be a bit of hit and miss in seeing these military aircraft... As although they do publish when aircraft are due to pass through the Mach Loop. Sadly it's not always set in stone... Obviously weather conditions can play a huge part in whether or not they fly on any particular day... So it can be pot luck really... Although your USAF husband Chris... Might have seen quite enough of these military aircraft anyway Jess... There's also a place in Llandudno called... The Great Orme... You can either drive up to the top to see the spectacular views... Or you can travel both ways on the Great Orme Tramway... Or you can travel up the The Great Orme on their Cable Cars... But you can also travel on a private road at the base of The Great Orme... Which takes you around it in an anticlockwise direction... It is private... So there's a small charge for vehicles that wish to enter the toll road... And travel around the base of The Great Orme... It's well worth the small charge though guys... As there are some incredible coastal views when you're driving around there... There are also places where you can park your car and explore... Including a small cafe that offers refreshments to the public too... I could go on further... But this post is already quite long... There's lots to see and do in North Wales... Anglesey beaches are also spectacular and very clean... And there's beautiful countryside there as well... And if you happen to be lucky enough to have some sunny weather... You'll have an amazing time there... Cheers guys.🍺

Thank you for braving driving on the left. We have to do the opposite when we drive in Europe, but after 20 minutes or so we get used to it. I can tell you that in the summer, sunny days are just as good as the Mediterranean, and the scenery. But we need the rain to keep the greenness. Wales is lovely.

I also meant to say that one of the short tunnels you drove through is known as the "beep beep" tunnel. Some locals honk their horn twice on the way through in memory of two workers that died during its construction. Others will then reply with their own "beep beep", and it can set off a chain reaction of honking.

Every year in Sept is the International Landrover show at the Peterborough show ground, it’s massive and even if you’re not into Landrovers it’s worth checking out on U-Tube. Keep up the good work

Hi Jess & Chris, it looks like you had a good trip apart from the weather, although we do get our fair share of rain, the experts said last autumn was the worst on record, and this winter was the worst for 150 years ! 😟 You've been unlucky so roll on the summer ☺ If you go back to Anglesey using the same route, check out the lovely castle at Conwy. Also, we know you're animal lovers like us (especially dogs), you might want to check out The Dog House at 8pm Thursdays on channel 4, it's a great re-homing dog show, Axel's bound to love it ! 😉

While you're here in the UK, you must try and get down to beautiful Devon. As military people, you'd be very interested in the 2nd World War history in South Devon. During preparations for D- Day the American military took over a huge area of the South Hams area and used the beaches for training for the 'big day' . At Torcross village not long before D-Day, there was a massive disaster. A passing German U boat came across an American troop carrier just off Torcross and sunk the ship causing the death of hundreds of American troops. The whole episode was 'hushed up' so as not too affect morale before D-Day. A local villager from Torcross took it up himself to remember the dead from the tragic incident. He discovered a Sherman tank on the sea bed and recovered it. It now sits proudly in Torcross as a memorial to the hundreds of American souls that died that day, and on significant memorial dates, the Top Brass from the U.S. and U.K. hold memorial services. The whole South Hams area is outstandingly beautiful, and well worth a visit and I'm sure you'd be interested in the history I have related here.

Possibly a bit of a daft question this , but have you checked to see if there is a mini owners club near you ? If there is they may help you find something closer to you and they may even let you attend a meet up without becoming a member straight away You never know they may even let you drive a couple of cars Take a trip upto Gaydon the British Motor Museum, you can see some of the original Monte Carlo Rally minis plus a load more cars from our motoring history . It’s a great day out and once you have bought a ticket it’s valad for a year

Most car meets nowadays are full of chavs with either financed "whips" who can't drive for sh*t or those who buy cheap £1k cars then spend thousands doing them up and not declaring half or even all of the modifications to their insurers.... and I say this as a 28 year old male who drives a 3 litre BMW saloon car quicker than a lot of performance hatchbacks! And yes. I do use my mirrors and I do indicate, and keep left and not lane hot - i'm aware of the stereotypes.

So what classic Mini were you after, a 1960's original Mini Cooper S by any chance? They are much more fun to drive than your current BMW Mini. Even Jay Leno has some! My g/f in Missouri has a red BMW Mini Cooper S and she is totally in love with it! Do you know about all the instrumentation and sound system variations that you can alter, or the Mini Cooper logo that can project onto the road from your wing mirrors?
