Wales is beautiful. I did my Duke of Edinburgh award 🥈 there. We went hiking and climbing up Cader Idris. It was misty, when we got near the top, the mist cleared and seeing the green valleys below was the most breathtaking, beautiful sight I had seen up to that point. Some years ago my father was terminally ill and we took him on a final trip to his birth place in Wales. We visited the Elan Valley and my father walked for a while and said it was the most beautiful place he had seen in his life. When you spend time with someone so ill you start to see through their eyes. The colours were so vivid and it was a wonderful time for us. Later a work colleague had to make a business trip and asked me for directions. I deliberately directed him though the Elan Valley. When he returned he thanked me and said my father had been right. For years he had not visited Wales because he had thought it was just an industrial area and hadn't believed me when I had told him that it was possibly the most beautiful part of the UK. He had immediately booked a two week trip with his equally sceptical girlfriend to introduce her to Wales.
@Durgesuth2 жыл бұрын
It’s true about the industry of Wales as slate was mined there and sent all over the world for roofing materials…. The Elan valley supplies dinking water to Birmingham …Nuclear and hydro electric power stations in Snowdonia and huge steel mills in the South… Wales is quite amazing as an industrial power house but still retained its natural charm

The industrial parts of Wales are dog rough, and some areas have deprivation so bad that historically they qualified for, and received, European Union financial aid. Thankfully these areas are very separate, and nothing unpleasant 'spills out' elsewhere. This is about 1% of what you would see, and can avoid quite easily. The other 99% is stunning. I think we downplay the beauty a bit, but we don't want to get too popular ;)

We had lunch at a pub, we tied up the horses outside and went in for a meal 😂 - fantastic! I’ve been to a bunch of different countries, but this trip I still love the most. I'm originally from Llandudno although we moved away when I was four. We made regular trips back throughout my childhood as both sets of grandparents were there. My sister is now living there again so I'm still a regular visitor. On my mum's side of the family we're related to Richard Hughes who was one of the contractors that built the Marine Drive. My dad's parents lived on the Great Orme and my grandpa used to work on the trams. My dad was an apprentice electrician at the Pier Pavilion Theatre (sadly it burnt down in the 90s) and was later a projectionist at the Savoy Cinema in Mostyn Street (where KFC is now). My mum was Rose Queen of Llandudno in 1950. The same year there was a train crash in nearby Penmaenmawr and my Taid (grandfather), a local policeman, was one of the first on the scene. He later received a commendation from the King.

I love Llandudno! I actually stayed there a couple of days with my mother when she visited the UK in 2005. We took photos at the top of the Orme and explored the thousands of years old copper mines. I still like to look in every time I visit Conwy Castle. North Wales is very old in terms of human history but it still feels like civilisation is a recent and superficial thing.

"Bluestones" for Stonehenge from the Prescelli Hills. Sonar surveys for the Oil terminal revealed a few errant "Stones", which must have been failed attempts to transport them thousands of years ago. The coastline has changed gradually, there are sunken villages off the coast.

Good Visits. Bodnant Gardens - Drive up the Conway valley from Conway. Also Port Meirion - an Italianate village on the coast. Also the slate mines up in the mountains. There is the worlds fastest ziplane up there as well. Or the Snowdon Mountain railway.

So glad you liked Wales. It truly is a wonderous place, full of beautiful sights. When you mentioned Jellyfish my mind immediately went back to the time I was swimming in the sea and a Jellyfish went up the leg of my swim shorts and stung me at the top of the leg and my testicles. Ouch was very much NOT the word I said.

Hey guys, I used to work in Llandudno in my teenage years! Its ana amazing place with so much to do. There are many ways to get to the top of the great orme either walking, by the Victorian funicular tramway or cable car gondola. There are many things to do at the top including a cafe and a museum. Activities half way down the orme to the northwest side facing conway there is a copper mine and zip wire, also a tribute to lewis carol the quthor of alice in wonderland who was born in Llandudno. Llandudno has two stunning beaches on both sides of town. Driving round the orme, if you take binoculars march tomay you will see pods of dolphins and porpoise swimming. Lovely video, I long to go back soon.

Those sheep probably belonged to a farmer. It's not uncommon in many parts of the UK for sheep to roam the countryside (which is why it's important to leave gates as you find them, i.e. if it's shut before you go through it, then shut it again behind you). They usually have coloured markings, a bit like they've been shot with a paintball gun, that indicate whose sheep they are. Sometimes they have numbered ear tags as well which identify individual sheep.

Well done for driving in a foreign country on the wrong side of the road and getting from York to Llandudno. You both looked very happy and relaxed exploring muddy caves, clambering over rocks and skipping down hillsides. Hope you got a chance to see even more of Wales; it's a beautiful country, and like Ireland there's an obvious reason it's so green x

There's always a lot of jellyfish off Llandudno pier. Also the Great Orme has miles of tunnels beneath it, some dating back 4000 years when copper mining was conducted. The goats are actually Afghan Kashmiri goats, and the regimental mascot of the Royal Welch Fusiliers (it's spelt 'Welch' as opposed to 'Welsh') - 'The Goat Major' is selected from them. Recently with covid the goats started to roam into Llandudno town (previously they'd just remain on the Orme). At 16;43 you mention the 'foundation' - it was probably part of the coastal Artillery school that was based on the Orme during the war. It could also be part of the 'Stop line' - a series of bunkers and choke points in lines across the UK to slow down any advancing invasion by the Germans in WW2. I'm from North Wales and while I did kind of appreciate the landscape, it wasn't until I moved away and brought my wife to visit that I really appreciated it. In Welsh we have a word 'Hiraeth' it kind of means 'longing', 'nostalgia' , sort of like homesickness. But it can also mean 'Belonging'.

The reason for the long piers around Britain is that before the advent of the motor car all transport on land was by horse or horse-drawn carriage. It was often quicker to go round the coast by boat but the size of boat meant a harbour or something where the boat could moor in deeper water .So piers stretching out to sea were built ,the passengers would alight then walk along the pier to the land. Of course ,once there were cars the piers became obsolete for that purpose and became a local tourist attraction ,with games ,rides and sometimes a small theatre at the sea end .

If you come again to Wales all the Welsh Coast is beautiful, South Wales has Sandier beaches but also beautiful scenery as has West Wales, Tenby is a must for a beautiful seaside town. The United Kingdom is one larger island and 100s od small ones so nowhere in UK are you further than 100 to 150 miles from the sea. Thank you I have loved watching your adventures.
