The dark red wooden houses and cottages you see all over Sweden is kind of a reminder of days past. The colour is called "Falu rödfärg" ("Falu red colour") and is made from byproducts of copper extraction. The Swedish empire of old was more or less built around a single mine - the copper mine in Falun, which at its heyday produced two thirds of the worlds copper.

We had a really bad summer from a weather point of view this year. Some parts of Sweden had decent summer weather early, but it was mostly rain and grey clouds from mid-july and on unfortunately! Otherwise, most of Sweden is usually spectacular in the summer and many of us usually spend the summers at home for that reason :)

Not really, it was just July that was cold and rainy (and I myself was abroad most of that time in the sunny Alps...). May and June was dry and warm, and we have had a fabulous indian summer, in my opinion. That's typical Swedish, one week of rain, and it's the worst summer ever. :)

It was beautiful, and we actually got perfect weather! I mean, it was not really hot, of course, but it was perfect for us. We even went swimming in the 16 degree cold Baltic sea, having kilometres of white sand beach all to ourselves and the sun being fairly warm. Just saw my hometown of Lysekil pop up in the flow, cool! Yes, you got it right, the touristseason would just have ended in late august. Most Swedes, and tourists from other European countries have their summer holiday from late June til mid August. This area, the Bohuslän coast has always been a popular destination. I´m a bit sad you missed the best part - the Strand promenad in Lysekil, the seaside walk and Norra Hamnen with its excellent restaurants and stunning views. Swedes are more friendly than Norwegians nowadays, because we´re poorer. In the eighties it was the other way around. Come back any time!

I hope you visit Sweden again! There is a huge difference between the southern and the northern part. I love the south, very exotic in my point of view but the best part is of course my corner of the country; Sapmi. I recommend to take the E45, Inlandsvägen, to Östersund in county of Jämtland and from there to Strömsund. From there you go to Gäddede and further on towards Blåsjön and over the countyborder to Västerbotten. You will pass the stunning place of Stekenjokk with easy access for hiking with children in the Scandic mountains. From there it is your choice, go north and explore Norrbotten and maybe go south through Norway or explore the east coast of Sweden at the Gulf of Botnia. On the way you can visit Frösö Djurpark (zoo) in Östersund. Ankarede sameviste (an Sami settlement and old church place), very beautiful. Stekenjokk for the views and a little hiking and south of Klimpfjäll you have Fatmomakke, also a Sami settlement/church place beautifully situated. There is also a lot of waterfalls and rapids to visit and not to forget; you must visit Leipikvattnet old settlement, now owned by the swedish state,having a leasteholder to take care of it. There is a lot of videos here on the Tube from Inlandsvägen and Stekenjokk for you to look at. Welcome!

Regarding age, I kind of regret my parents took me to foreign countries when I was young. So I was more interested in the immediate circumstances, eating, playing etc. than in the landscape or cultural aspects. It didn't help to tell me I have been there when I don't really have a sense of what the differences were. But then I think there might be no perfect time. Go as long as you can.

The swedish west coast is very crowded in the summer and especially during general vacation weeks 28-32. I guess as swedes we are also a little affected by the current weather, if the weather is cloudy and maybe also rainy we tend to not be outdoors in the same way as if the sun shines from a clear blue sky and it's warm....

The café you pointed out early on in the video, it really is just as good as you say. Absolutely top notch 10 out of 10; try the sourdough bread they bake too - excellent for breakfast, toast it a bit, put on some butter and a nice slice of cheese - yuumm! :) I would say you should come during the summer season and not so late in the year, but you DID come during summer. lol Sorry about that, this past summer was pretty bad overall. Anyway, Koster is definitely worth its own trip another year - the north island is very typical for the coastline of Bohuslän (which is the part of the nation north of Göteborg and up to the Norwegian border). The nature is very stark and shaped by the ocean waves and strong winds, with lots of exposed rock, thin soil, mostly short trees and lots of shrub growth. Some just get depressed by this, others see a wild, nak ed beauty in it. The southern island is quite lush in comparison (much larger too - good idea to rent bikes to get around.) Another really nice visit is the southern archipelago of Göteborg. There are ferries to all the little islands, buy a day pass and ride them as much as you like and just walk around from one ferry stop to another. The islands are largely car-free (golf carts are quite popular), with lots of quaint, picturesque wooden houses of the style typical for the Swedish west coast. If you do visit northern Sweden, the landscape around Kiruna, up to Abisko natural reserve and Riksgränsen is very beautiful in its vastness and openness. The air is so clean and smells so wonderful during summertime, and out there you basically don't hear anything except birds, the wind (and unfortunately, the buzzing of mosquitos, so come prepared! lol) Maybe when the kids are a bit older and can come with you on a hike in nature. :)

It's definitely a nice coastline! But I see some comments on the big differences from Norway. Well. not really, because if you continue north and cross the border to Norway, the landscape is not that different, and if you follow the coastline of Norway south from Oslo you will find several places quite similar to this. I will especially mention the south coast, Sørlandet, which is my favourite and also Norway's "summer paradise", which you may call the soothing part of Norway. A lot of small towns and settlements with white wooden houses and picket fences by the seaside, but also some other flavours. And of course, a lot of small islands and islets. Very nice on a summer day in a small boat. The "problem" is that many tourists think of fjords, mountains and spectacular views when it comes to Norway, so if they come by ferry to Kristiansand, which is considered the capital of Sørlandet, they go directly to the west coast and the most famous places, and perhaps also the northern parts of the country. I think many should have spent a few days exploring Sørlandet. They could have had a quite different view of Norway added to the most famous parts.

@tobiasdubiak4747
@tobiasdubiak4747 Жыл бұрын
@@abcabcboy That was not on my mind when I added my comment, but you're right. Perhaps Norway should take it back, together with Jämtland and Härjedalen further north which Sweden also also took at the same time. And until 1645, most of southern Sweden, up to just south of Göteborg/Gothenburg belonged to Denmark. Then Sweden only had a small strip of coastline around Gôteborg. That should mean that these guys hardly visited Sweden and this video should have been another one about Norway, or the part of Norway occupied by Sweden...😁 I must add that quite a lot of Norwegians have bought summer cabins in this area, much because it's cheaper than in Norway. It's a cunning plan to get the land back without the Swedes discovering it. It is cheaper than war, it just requires a bit of patience to buy enough to take over... DON'T TELL THEM!

I'm so happy that you enjoyed the country I love so much! You chose a really great strip of Sweden for your first visit. I know the area from previous travels and recognised several places. This weekend I will take off for Sweden once again and already planned to see some of the places you just showed to us - what a great attunement for my journey! Thanks a lot for your hint to Grebbestad, as I love bakeries!

This part of Sweden was part of Norway from 862 to 1658, 800 years, before 862 it was a sepoarate kingdom, and the stupid german femily who was kings of Norway and Denmark lost this to another German, the king of Sweden. But the facy remains, tj\his was Norway for 800 yrars, ut has been Sweden for 360 years. (The German princes that were elevated into princes and kings in Denmark, Sweden and Norway came out of internal struggles, relationships with the kaiser of the Roman Empire og the German Nation , which existed between 962 to 1806.) However we will go to war and get it back, the price for you Americans will be that the area gets a bit unfriendlier..... Yes, we Norwegians consider Swedes a bit superficial, a bit like Americans, so that suits you both

Cry me a river...Sweden took Bohuslän after the Danes lost one of their countless aggression wars against Sweden.
@perolden
@perolden Жыл бұрын
@@WhiskyandBacon TheDanes, or more correctly, the Germans that were kings, like in Sweden KArl 10. was a German. His descendant Karl 12. tried to take Norway, but we shot him, and returned to Sweden on a gurney, while at the same time the Swedes tried to take middle Norway, but froze to death, so the aggressionist wars was equally agressive on both sides, even if they all were german noblemen and princes. But still the Danes thought they could part with parts of Norway in 1645 and 1658, and since Swedes are a people of little intelligence, almosty as dumb as Danes, We felt a little bit insulted. Since then JEmtland and Herjedalen wanted to be joined to the old country, as well as Ranrike and Viken, which the Swedes thought were called Båhuslen, wihich really was the immediate area around the fortress- I remember visting the museums, and I found no mention ofthat the towns were Norwegian Towns, I laughed. ASwedish channel boght the Norwegian programmme of bringing descendants of Swedes from America to a contest, and I remember a guy named Rambo whose ancestor had left Hisingen in the 1600s, when --hisingen was a part of Norway, they never mentined that, the gut thoufght his ancestors were Swedes. Pathetic
