Hey up, John, I take your point. But I was thinking of the North Americans that live in the middle of North America. A fresh open sea or ocean breeze is a thousand miles away ( therefore there isn`t one ). Where does one sojourn in the mid summer heat ( such as that which we are in immanent sufferage of ? ) a thousand miles away either way ? I`ve been on the coast of the Med`- Sea - as likely as not you have - when it`s been 45 degrees C mid afternoon and 35 degrees C at midnight. Forgive me, but as likely as not you`ll know that any substantial volume of water ( sea and particularly ocean ) will have a warming effect at its coasts during the winter and a cooling effect during the summer. Take a modestly sized country like Spain and its capital city which lies to all intents and purposes smack bang in the middle of that amazing country. The Spainsh have a word - phrase for Madrid ( I speak some Spanish but can`t recall how it is said ) : Madrid is a frozen Hell during the winter, and an infernal one during the summer.

I'm enjoying watching you in my home town and glad you enjoyed your visit to Edinburgh. Believe it or not this is Edinburgh really quiet compared to normal, our tourism industry hasn't fully bounced back yet, I was out and about today and the place feels quite empty yet (I was up on the Calton Hill today, it's always good for the soul, David Hume, the philosopher who kinda invented modern Western thinking, he used to stroll up there a lot, thinking about modern Western thinking, I suppose... I live down somewhere in the middle of the view when you're looking towards the Docks) The 'big rocket' on Princes Street btw, the Sir Walter Scott Monument, is actually the largest monument to a novelist in the world, it is covered in dozens of small statues of characters from his (very long and very dry) historical novels, some of which were set in Edinburgh, you actually trod on the spot where one of his most dramatic scenes played out, right outside the door of St Giles High Kirk, but I won't go into the details because it's quite gory (it happened almost 300 years ago after all) and you're on your holidays :-)

Plenty to see and do but not as crowded as many others. . . well apart from during the festival lol I've lived much Longer in Stirling (Stirling Castle often acts as the stunt double for Edinburgh castle in films lol), about half my life. Scotland is my homeland and I've never considered living anywhere else although I have wandered around a lot of europe for holidays. While yes the public transport in Edinburgh is some of the best in the UK I wonder what you made of the layered nature of the streets. I gave many tourists directions when I lived there as the maps can be hard to read due to streets appearing to cross over each other but actually being on different elevations. Again you were time limited but you could easily have spent a couple of weeks exploring all there is to see in my nations capital. I note you have a Glasgow trip as well so you will be able to contrast the two major cities in Scotland. All the other scottish cities are much smaller but each one is very distinct.

The Stone work in Edinburgh is dark, from the old days and fumes and soot from coal fired houses. This gave the Scottish Skang name for Edinburgh as Auld Reekie ( reekie a slang term heavy coal fired smoke ) Edinburgh is a very lively city and bathed in history. Edinburgh Castle and Arthur's Seat are both on extinct volcanoes. As for Colton Hill., there is a tower there with a ". Dropping " ball that is triggered by the One o'clock cannon fire from the castle. This was to signal out to sea to sailing vessels that the time was indeed 1pm. Glad you enjoyed your trip. Check out Burk and Hare , the grave robbers

Burke and Hare were not really grave-robbers - they simply murdered people to supply to the anatomists.

Reekie is not a slang word, it's Scots for smokie.

Speaking as an Englishman, I can say that Edinburgh has class, architecturally and historically. The reason that the Scott Memorial and other buildings are so dark is that they are all soot-stained from before the clean air act. Edinburgh is known as "Auld Reeky" due to the smell of soot and smoke and the smog that used to envelope the city back then.
@alicemilne14442 жыл бұрын
Other buildings in Edinburgh have been cleaned up. I have a feeling they keep putting off tackling the Scott Monument because it's such a god-awful Victorian mock-gothic monstrosity, which will be a bugger to clean.
@duncancallum2 жыл бұрын
The stone used for building the Scott Monument is not very hard so the powers to be decided it would not be in the best interest of the Monument to sand blast it , so it never happened .

You packed quite a lot in to a short time in terms of sight-seeing but it looks like you didn't get to see the "New Town", which is the Georgian district on the other side of Princes Street from the castle. It's full of beautiful terraces, squares and crescents, and a bit more relaxing to walk around than the Old Town in respect of crowds etc.

I remember watching a movie about American Spy’s in Germany set in world war 2 and they had to teach them to use a fork and knife, because the way the Americans eat with just a fork would give them away to the Germans. Looks like nothing’s changed.🤣🤣🤣🤣

The good thing about Edinburgh is that you will have different experiences depending on when you come here. You arrived pre festival season which just before the August Festival season which is one of the peak times, as the city I think actually doubles in terms of population during the festival. There are literally thousands of all types of shows but comedy is probably the most well known type of event. You can however do the festival on the cheap as long as you arent too fussy about what you go to see as there are free and very cheap tickets available. Mainly because many venues have a different show on every hour so some venues will easily host 12 different shows in one day. This festival is where you can see bigger names but also the ones who will make it big, many cut their teeth at the Edinburgh Fringe, with alot of them actually getting into debt to perform in Edinburgh as its seen as launching pad for their career. In terms of places to stay, its very expensive during the festival as artists and tourists compete for rooms. An option is to stay maybe 15 to 20 miles outside the city (maybe West Lothian) in one of the surrounding towns and to get the train to the city centre, which is only around 20 to 25 mins away. The other peak experience time for Edinburgh is New Years which is known locally as Hogmanay. I actually prefer Edinburgh in the winter, there are many cosy bars and there is a great atmosphere at the Christmas and New Year period. It certainly looks more dramatic in the snow! Its the same however at this time of year if you are looking for places to stay, its very busy. Also if you want access to the main street party which hosts live music and fireworks to welcome in the new year, this is a ticketed event but its not expensive, you just need to plan in advance. Even if you dont make the street party just about every bar and nightclub will have a late licence and public transport is extended to allow people to get home safely from the city centre. The festivals in August and New Years in Edinburgh are world famous for a reason, they draw in a global crowd and is on many peoples bucket lists. Hope to see you back here soon!

We were last there three years ago where we did the Castle tour, which took up a whole afternoon. We always plan to do the the creepy ghost tours of the crypts beneath Edinburgh, so far we haven't been brave enough.

Went twice up Scotts Monument and as you get nearer the top the steps get narrower but worth it for the view. An interesting fact that there are tunnels under the Royal Mile. Under St Giles Cathedral are hidden tunnels which were known as the Priests holes used for hiding in times of persecution.

I’m glad Edinburgh was everything you hoped it to be. I look forward to your video on the castle. Most of the buildings are built with local Sandstone but are dark because of the pollution caused by the coal powered Industrial Revolution. Most British cities have similar pollution stained buildings but the transformation if they are cleaned can be remarkable! As a Yorkshireman I’m really looking forward to your York video!👍🏼
