My ancestors were master masons in Flanders, ( modern Belgium) and they came to Scotland in the 14th century to work for the King bringing new building techniques with them. You'd be surprised at how even in our island nation those of us who live in the centre of the country rarely get out to the coast. I can't remember the last time I was on the coast here in the UK. The last time I saw the ocean/sea was in early 2020 in Sydney. I think the last time I saw the UK coast must have been several years ago. Hey up, John, I take your point. But I was thinking of the North Americans that live in the middle of North America. A fresh open sea or ocean breeze is a thousand miles away ( therefore there isn`t one ). Where does one sojourn in the mid summer heat ( such as that which we are in immanent sufferage of ? ) a thousand miles away either way ? I`ve been on the coast of the Med`- Sea - as likely as not you have - when it`s been 45 degrees C mid afternoon and 35 degrees C at midnight. Forgive me, but as likely as not you`ll know that any substantial volume of water ( sea and particularly ocean ) will have a warming effect at its coasts during the winter and a cooling effect during the summer. Take a modestly sized country like Spain and its capital city which lies to all intents and purposes smack bang in the middle of that amazing country. The Spainsh have a word - phrase for Madrid ( I speak some Spanish but can`t recall how it is said ) : Madrid is a frozen Hell during the winter, and an infernal one during the summer.

Welcome to Edinburgh - glad you loved it. 5:50 The street is Canongate - a continuation of the High Street. 9:19 The alleyways that lead into courtyards are referred to as 'closes'. Originally, they could be _closed_ off at night to prevent undesirables disturbing the rightful occupants. 11:10 The City Observatory is still used by the Astronomical Society of Edinburgh, an amateur group. The Royal Observatory, Edinburgh is sited on Blackford Hill and is still active scientifically - housing both the University Department of Astronomy and the UK's national Astronomy Technology Centre.

Well done for wading in to what must have been a very chilly sea, but you had great fun - loved the sight of Angela running along the beach "Chariots of Fire" style. Additional info - you may have noticed a huge arrangement of seating in front of the castle. This is for the August Edinburgh Military Tattoo - marching military bands, pipers, dancers, fireworks and laser display, and in this film I see Swiss flags and a Stars and Stripes, so performers from USA were there. I lived in Edinburgh for a while and have to say it's probably the only large city I'd ever consider living in long term (I tend to prefer smaller places). Plenty to see and do but not as crowded as many others. . . well apart from during the festival lol I've lived much Longer in Stirling (Stirling Castle often acts as the stunt double for Edinburgh castle in films lol), about half my life. Scotland is my homeland and I've never considered living anywhere else although I have wandered around a lot of europe for holidays. While yes the public transport in Edinburgh is some of the best in the UK I wonder what you made of the layered nature of the streets. I gave many tourists directions when I lived there as the maps can be hard to read due to streets appearing to cross over each other but actually being on different elevations. Again you were time limited but you could easily have spent a couple of weeks exploring all there is to see in my nations capital. I note you have a Glasgow trip as well so you will be able to contrast the two major cities in Scotland. All the other scottish cities are much smaller but each one is very distinct.

Awwww I LOVED living in Edinburgh. It looked like you pootled into the Grassmarket, and down the Royal Mile from the Castle to Holyrood palace. It’s such a wonderful city isn’t it, filled with history and splendour. It was awesome seeing you guys in the sea at Portobello beach. The Scottish sea is super cold but I used to go there all the time. You weren’t lame at ALL! Hilarious. Going for a paddle is a terribly British thing to do, because oft times our seas are colder than in your neck of the woods. :)

I once had a very frightening experience at Portobello beach when I lived in Edinburgh. I'd just been on the shows by the promenade and had sat down on a bench facing out to sea having an ice cream when a nearby married couple started shouting and screaming at each other. Unbelievably the bloke grabbed a big stick and started hitting his wife and.... hard to believe this.... also their young child. The guy didn't realise that a policeman was just behind him who made a grab to apprehend him but the man managed to turn and knocked the police officer to the ground also. This was really alarming stuff especially considering all the young children in close proximity. Myself and a couple of other men rushed towards the out of control ranting bloke but just as we were within touching distance a crocodile appeared from nowhere and ate all the sausages! I swear that years later the same couple turned up at Barry Island where I now live and just to demonstrate that Leopards don't change their spots, much the same thing happened again, goodness knows where all these crocodiles are coming from?

That structure is called The National Monument. It was designed from 1823 - 1826, and is modelled on the Parthenon in Athens (438 B.C.), which is probably what you meant (not the Colosseum in Rome 80 A.D.). What's left of the ancient buildings in Italy and Greece, today, are ruins whereas The National Monument was never completed. Construction began in 1826 but it was left unfinished in 1829 due to a lack of funds.

Back in 1982 I visited Edinburgh during its annual festival and on the camp site we were woken up by a piper - every morning. I remember English classes in Germany back in 1977 (where I was enrolled at that time) having a huge argument with our English teacher not being able to pronounce Edinburgh the correct way. The good thing about Edinburgh is that you will have different experiences depending on when you come here. You arrived pre festival season which just before the August Festival season which is one of the peak times, as the city I think actually doubles in terms of population during the festival. There are literally thousands of all types of shows but comedy is probably the most well known type of event. You can however do the festival on the cheap as long as you arent too fussy about what you go to see as there are free and very cheap tickets available. Mainly because many venues have a different show on every hour so some venues will easily host 12 different shows in one day. This festival is where you can see bigger names but also the ones who will make it big, many cut their teeth at the Edinburgh Fringe, with alot of them actually getting into debt to perform in Edinburgh as its seen as launching pad for their career. In terms of places to stay, its very expensive during the festival as artists and tourists compete for rooms. An option is to stay maybe 15 to 20 miles outside the city (maybe West Lothian) in one of the surrounding towns and to get the train to the city centre, which is only around 20 to 25 mins away. The other peak experience time for Edinburgh is New Years which is known locally as Hogmanay. I actually prefer Edinburgh in the winter, there are many cosy bars and there is a great atmosphere at the Christmas and New Year period. It certainly looks more dramatic in the snow! Its the same however at this time of year if you are looking for places to stay, its very busy. Also if you want access to the main street party which hosts live music and fireworks to welcome in the new year, this is a ticketed event but its not expensive, you just need to plan in advance. Even if you dont make the street party just about every bar and nightclub will have a late licence and public transport is extended to allow people to get home safely from the city centre. The festivals in August and New Years in Edinburgh are world famous for a reason, they draw in a global crowd and is on many peoples bucket lists. Hope to see you back here soon!

Of course one of the reasons your train to Edinburgh was so packed, is that it was run by Lumo which is a cheap fare company. I tend to get lost within 100 yards of my own house at times because my orientation is different from what I am usually used to. The first time I visited Edinburgh with my wife, I just knew the place like the back of my hand and could just lead the way without any maps or directions. I hadn't realised that Edinburgh was infested with those "American" candy stores as well 😭. They seem to be the British equivalent of mattress shops in the US. They are *everywhere* and nobody ever seems to buy anything in them. They charge about £10 for for Tesco Value / Asda Smartprice chocolate in fake American packaging, and are mostly there as a scam to avoid paying business rates (property tax), and for other money laundering activities. If you want actual American candy, go to the world foods section of one of the big supermarkets like Tesco, or, in your case, just wait until you get back home, and get it from your regular grocery shops.

The 'church' 🙂featured in the tour is/was St Giles' cathedral. (Presbyterian.) Other denominations are not to be outdone - there is also an Episcopalian and a Catholic cathedral - both called St Mary's. My parents were married in the Episcopalian St Mary's. Yes, the weather in Edinburgh is not necessarily always as good as that ... in contrast kind of wind you had at Portobello beach is hardly unknown!
@CrazyInWeston
@CrazyInWeston 2 жыл бұрын
Lets be clear here. A Cathedral does not mean 'city' status and it never has. There are 24 towns in the UK that have a cathedral and yet, do not have city status! Examples are Wrexham, Northampton and Middlesbrough. Nor is it a requirement to have one before being granted 'city' status. It had always been the crown to grant it. It just so coincides in the past many were given it with them as they were a prominent building, so it has led up to the myth that a city needs to have a cathedral/a cathedral means city status. St Davids in Wales, Wells in Somerset and YES even the city of London are the smallest citys in the UK with less than 15,000 people. Everything outside of the mile city thats called London isnt London believe it or not, its the City of Westminster and surrounding areas in the Greater London boundary. If you dont believe me, go to 'London' and visit any street next to the houses of parliament. It'll say the road names with it in the top corner "City of Westminster" on it. Go further out, it'll tell you the local borough (More hit and miss as they kinda stopped doing that as you go further out with newer builds) but it'll never say "London". London is a city state like the Vatican in Rome, only that London acknowledges that its in England and not its own country. You'll have to go back to William the Conqueror 1066 to understand how London the mile city is so different to the rest of "London". It is a mystery to me at least, why the rest of the place is called London and not Westminster! My theory is that because London was such an important place and didnt separate itself from England to be a total nation city state, people who lived nearby would say they lived there and the name spread, Thats my take because its been the financial capital of the world for centuries!

I'm enjoying watching you in my home town and glad you enjoyed your visit to Edinburgh. Believe it or not this is Edinburgh really quiet compared to normal, our tourism industry hasn't fully bounced back yet, I was out and about today and the place feels quite empty yet (I was up on the Calton Hill today, it's always good for the soul, David Hume, the philosopher who kinda invented modern Western thinking, he used to stroll up there a lot, thinking about modern Western thinking, I suppose... I live down somewhere in the middle of the view when you're looking towards the Docks) The 'big rocket' on Princes Street btw, the Sir Walter Scott Monument, is actually the largest monument to a novelist in the world, it is covered in dozens of small statues of characters from his (very long and very dry) historical novels, some of which were set in Edinburgh, you actually trod on the spot where one of his most dramatic scenes played out, right outside the door of St Giles High Kirk, but I won't go into the details because it's quite gory (it happened almost 300 years ago after all) and you're on your holidays :-)

I'm not sure you'd get hypothermia just going for a quick swim in the Firth of Forth in June/July. Still, glad you enjoyed Scotland. I'm sure you'll always be welcome to return.

Amazing when you think that the cathedral is around 900 years old. How were they able to build such a building with no modern tools ?

Most of it was built by the victorians. Only the very core part of the place are original from the second church built 800 years ago and even those parts were extensively changed and remodelled.

King's Cross, did you miss out on the Harry Potter store? Oh well, you can visit it in York 😉 Edinburgh (& York) my 2 favorite cities in the UK, ever!! Glad you had fun ..you liked Prince's St. best 🤔 I prefer the Grassmarket and the majestic, Royal Mile 💙 You're 'I liked this street, with the shadows' is the Canongate, the bottom of the Royal Mile 😊 The 'alleyways' are called Closes, but they were historically, closed alleys..some of them have the most gruesome stories! 👻 - be there myself again, in 2 weeks! hello from Denmark 🌸🌱

I loved the way you just get on a bus going....somewhere...great way to see a new city...takes you to places you wouldn't see on a tour bus. London busses re making for that...way better than tour busses. Really enjoying your videos.

That building you see with the 3 windows and a balcony, to the left of the gates @ 6:05 is part of Moray House. It is almost certainly where Oliver Cromwell lodged when in Edinburgh in 1648. I used to work there and attended many meetings in that balconied room. It is absolutely magnificent and extremely difficult to concentrate on the meeting as you find yourself just gazing around you at all the splendour.
