In Europe, football and sport in general is a real religion for most people, each city has its club, and you fight for it, rivalries are created between each club, sport in the USA is just a family hobby on Sunday.

Teams in Europe are Clubs and in America they're franchises. The franchises started as a business idea whereas the clubs started as an idea for like minded people to get together, for protection, or to protest. Clubs are a way of life, an identity, a socio-political movement, protest, a religion, an ideal. P.S. When we go to football or basketball matches no one cares about the food because of the adrenaline.

Most of the clips seem to be from Eastern Europe, or the south eastern region (Greece, Serbia, Croatia etc ). There are sometimes ethnic, political or religious differences between fan groups (e.g. One team is supported by Orthodox Christians, another by Catholics or Muslims). So long running tensions can play a part in the fanaticism. As a British guy, these are another level to what goes on in UK football. And my sister has had a dislocated jaw after policing an Aston Villa vs. Birmingham City game. We specialise in dark comedic chants rather than the violence on the whole. One side note is that a lot of the teams in mainland Europe are involved in other sports like Basketball, and the same fans go to support them. That's why the top European basketball players who make the move are not worried about NBA crowds.

Here in Europe there is passion, it is a way og life.. A lot of places you even get time off of work, if your national team is playing.. When it comes to fans, there is a lot of differences. We have fans that meet up before every game, talk about games, drinking and having fun before we go to the game and its just the love of the sport and your team. But there is also people who just, take it to far. I saw a guy who had his 9 year old son with him to his first football game here in Denmark, and some fan of the other team ran straight up and punch him out, right i infront of his 9 year old son, beacuse he was wearing another team. That ain't love of football. But most of the people, do come for the love of the game and their team. And yes, we do throw a lot of shade on the other teams. But there's a big difference between chants and straight up beating people for the fun of it, especially infront of their kids.

Every single country has teams. Each city can have one, two or more clubs. For us, Europeans, football is life. You become a fan because your dad or your grandfather was a fan. For example, I'm a thrid generation supporter of my home club. That's how old those clubs are. That's how dedicated we are to support them. We don't change support for the club. You are a fan until you die. In my country, there's a saying: "You can change your house, your car or your wife. But you can never change your club".

True story from WW1 in the Balkans: In periods of relative peace(when noone has an upper hand and no major move is to be made by either side, just staying in position), to give some entertainment and relief to the soldiers, a British commander organized football teams and a mini tournament. When a match was played, the enemy cannons would go quiet, and even the enemy soldiers would come up the hills to watch the game from a distance. Sometimes, a fight between players would break out, and sometimes it will be stopped not by the teams and refferees, but by a single enemy cannon shot in the air. The enemy`s way of saying - peace during football - yes, peace during football fights - no! It`s in the memoires of the British general. Football is like the duel of old - passion-driven, honour-bound. That`s why fans sometimes say - we are the club. Win or lose - we support it, cause it is more than just 11 field players, goals scored and championship standing. It`s like supporting your country. Then again, there are also those who just go to the games to get drunk, maybe light a fire, maybe break something, maybe get into a fight with whoever, all of them beat boredom anyway :)

I'm German. I think the reason is that Europe has always been at war with each other and taking land from each other. That is why there is a great love of home in Europe. I only watch football on TV and I'm not a hooligan, but if I was in a game from my home country, drank a lot of alcohol and our rivals insult us all the time, I think I would attack the others with my team because it's feels like they're belittling our homeland and finding their homeland better than ours. I know this sounds ridiculous, but imagine if we were to slander your homeland, your origins and everything you stand for all the time. We hate each other but when it comes to our homeland we are all united and fighting side by side.

Football brings up primal emotions with male fans in Europe and the world in general except for US and Canada. Here in Europe it's the closest thing we have to the raiding bands of Vikings in the middle ages. I guess it's an urge Europeans have, East and West, even though we seem "sophisticated and cultured" to you, this is who we are DEEP DOWN. A bunch of tribal factions fighting each other.

I'm white and English and have been to a couple of these games in Poland and Bulgaria and it can get very unhinged depending what stand you are in. My wife is Polish and tells me to keep my mouth shut when we are in the stands as the thugs can kick off knowing you are not one of them. I happened to get into a fight in the stand and had beer thrown over me for being English with a Polish women. A lot of these people hate everyone equally so it's not aimed at just one group. Oh, and the bananas are often thrown at black players and the fans wear the ski masks so they don't get caught behaving badly.

Every city has its own team, or several. Depending on what part of the city (or part of the country) you grow up in, you root for "your" team - and that NEVER changes. Every country has its own top flight league with 20-ish teams, and then there are 5-6 divisions underneath with 20 teams in each. This means that each country in Europe (and South America) has hundreds of teams, with their own fans. These fans are all die hard in love with their clubs, no matter what division they play in. The City of London (England), for instance, has dozens of teams and each team's fans HATE the other London clubs.

In Europe, football is not just a sport but much more. And it's a lot more serious than you think. Knowledge about Europe wouldn't be bad to be able to understand this at all. Look at the map of Europe and how many countries you see there. There was war in Europe for over 1200 years. Sometimes an alliance changed but the actual one remained. The war was the top priority. Today, armies no longer besiege cities or engage in pitched battles. Instead, the cities have the clubs with their ultras and conflicts of varying strength often arise. You see, that football in Europe has a completely different meaning than in other countries without this history.

historically in europe a lot of people basically used football teams supporters as gangs that's why the attitude is so different and alien to americans and their sports teams. The football team is the biggest representation of your community so its a symbol of your community/town/city similar to gangs. Every football team in the world pretty much doesn't like cops

Man beating drums down a street in a different city is great. We did that in Portland last year for the MLS Cup Final. 3,000 fans (myself included) from New York to watch our team and we marched from downtown Portland all the way to their stadium, drums, banners, flags, songs and chants. Cops shut down the streets and blocked off traffic as we basically invaded their city for one day. Oh we also won, worth the 6+ hour trip which cost way too much money lol. Also not the largest away support in the U.S. I think Toronto one season bought like 5,000 people down to Columbus for an away game back in like 2007 or something.

The ting is, You have 2 teams that play against each other and therefore 2 groups of fans. If you leave it out of the stadium at the same time, it's war. So the police try to keep them separate because the stadium is often in the city.

Hey there, nice reaction, i`m following you for some time but i just stumble on this one :D In any case, i see a lot of "worriors" here that say it's not safe, it's blablabla... BS, if you want to attend a game, even a derby, just don't wear any shirts, colour, etc with any team and go to the family sections and never forget, the family section is always for the home team so don't say anything bad or get happy for the other team and you'll be treated as part of the family! Ultras fans always stay behind the goals. Aaaaand yes, a lot of clubs as we have relegations and each country has at least 3 pro leagues and several other for semi-pro, amateurs and so on. Hope this helps, cheers from Prague!

5:42 concerning fire, since I was at that game. It's us, fans of FC Partizan Belgrade on an away game at hated rival FC Red Star (also in 9:07). Their ugly terraces and disposable chairs are always destroyed at the away part, ocassionaly things are burned. It only happens at their stadium. An expression of our hatred towards them, and everything their stadium symbolises.

I hate football because of the supporters. Bunch a crazy people who want to destroy everything in the name of their club. Passion is good but not to this extent when you feel the need to burn shit down, punch the opposite supporters and give a hard time to the police. Like for real, each game turn into shit because of them. It's legit dangerous to go to a stadium.

each country has its own league and divisions. For example England has Premier league, championship, league one, league two and many more divisions. Soccer also has relegations and promotions. I have read online that there is about 110,00 professional soccer teams in the world and there is many more ( semi-pro, amateur )

football or soccer is huge outside of America. Here in africa during civil wars there is usually a temporary pause to the war to allow the national team to play. the 1967 biafra civil war in nigeria and as recent as ivory coast. but governments and rebels know not to touch football

That wave is called a Mexican wave in football (soccer to you) because it became famous in Europe after the wc in mexico in 1986. I don't claim to know where it started, but I would guess it was in some football(your soccer) stadium in South America or Mexico.
