That young couple were perfectly aware of the dangers. They both had been there for several years. The husband spent the majority of his life there to the point that his first language was Creole. The husband had been kidnapped before as a child. They had all been threatened with weapons multiple times. During the unrest that been going on in Haiti in the last half decade, the territories of the gangs in control of the areas where they had their orphanage and school have shifted constantly. They were well aware of the danger. They had a better idea of the danger than the US State Department. They just considered that helping people was worth the risk.

You are correct that many of these comments have been cruel. Many people are acting poorly toward a young couple who sacrificed so much to help others. Still, if that young couple were to read these comments, they probably wouldn't get too upset. According to their beliefs, they are now with their God and experiencing a joy and peace that passes understanding. If they were to read these comments, they'd just be praying for a lot of people who are clearly hurting. I thinks they'd prefer a few mean KZbin comments to being in the tropics without AC and running water. They probably prefer a few mean comments over the times they've been kidnapped or the many times they were threatened with weapons. Yes, it's sad how people have reacted to this news. Still, this young couple never sacrificed to get the praise of people. They sacrificed because they wanted to live their life for God's glory.

For all the negative comments, please understand they were there running an orphanage that’s been there for years. Their love for these children kept them there in spite of the danger. Things happened that escalated out of their control. We should be extolling their virtue, and expressing gratitude that there’s still a few unselfish, self sacrificing young people who feel compelled to help the most vulnerable in society. Condolences would be better than criticism at this time. “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” John 15:13

They, their friends, and families had previously faced kidnapping and being threatened with weapons many times.

These are missionaries to Haiti. A couple who had a call so strong to reach what the world would define as unreachable. Yes it was dangerous but sending countries to hell is a lot more scarier. They understood the value of the gospel and they risked their lives so people can experience the fullness of God. Instead of hating and blaming the missionaries for their death you should help and pray for those who are just like them in the Middle East and many more places where they could die. Some missionaries even come with their children. Even though they may have endured a painful death but their award will be great in heaven.

Vania André is conveniently located in New Jersey, NOT in Haiti. Let that sink in for a second; she’s the chairperson of the Haitian Times, not on assignment in the US. That should tell you all you need to know about her perspective (e.g. when she’s saying the Haitian diaspora has concerns over US aid and the Kenyan mission) and the situation on the ground in Haiti.
