Welcome to Britain, you'll love it. There will be a few major culture shocks, the biggest will probably be our attitude to alcohol. Legal age is officially 18, not ,21, but if the girls are out a restaurant with you, they can drink with a meal at 16. They can legally drink in your own house if they're over 5, so they can have a beer when you have a BBQ. Kids in pubs, up till 9pm is fine, as is drinking in the street. No "open container" laws either. P.S. all of Europe is under 3 hours away and flights are cheap. Visit Paris, Rome, Amsterdam or Spain. It's on your doorstep, so why not? God Bless 👍

The housing stock in the UK is rather old. Many houses were built in rows for factory workers in the 1800s, when we had factories. You were lucky if you had an inside toilet. Often a row of houses would share an out-side toilet. My first house (a 'row' house) had the toilet in the very small rear yard in a brick shed and it was a yard, (paved) not a garden. So houses were just not built with a laundry room. My current house was built in 1874 (Custer made his last stand in 1876) and yes the washing machine and dryer are in the kitchen. I would love to have a laundry room but there is just no space. Have you been to Wales and seen their road signs? They are in Welsh but also English. Have you managed to decipher a Scottish accent yet? Some of them can be very difficult to penetrate, even for English people. You may want to watch Kevin Bridges, a Scottish comedian, to attune your ears. You are lovely people and very welcome.

I know you're back home now, but for any other Americans who might come here. A free phone number in England most often starts with 0800. I was told when ringing from a mobile/cell, to drop the 1st 0, because it uses your phone credit if you don't. So my council office to get help for my home is 0800 *** ****. If ringing from a land line, I use every digit. But if calling from a mobile or cell, I would call 800 *** ****. (I didn't reveal the the rest of the number, as I didn't want unauthorised people pranking the number & them getting charged. The council would eventually start charging us.) Lots of companies have the free 0800 at the beginning, so just remember this tip. It's only for mobile/cell phones. You use every digit from a landline. (Using the 1st 0 is still free on a landline.)

Dropping zeros on phone numbers is because you are calling from American phones and therefore need to prefix the international dialling code to dial both out of the States and into the U.K. That would also make the numbers seem longer. We don’t have to do any of that when we’re dialling from within our own country from U.K. phones with British service providers.

Also services accessed through one of the main four. Lifeboat, Mountain rescue, Lowland rescue, Cave rescue, Mine rescue, Bomb disposal, Morcambe Bay Quicksand search and rescue. NHS when you need medical advice that is not an emergency dial 111. Police if it is not an emergency dial 101. If you are using a mobile on the Kent coast. Welcome to England, I hope you all enjoy it here. We're a bit different but no so different that you should have any problem coping. Pointers: Over here we say "how are you" like "Hi" or "Hello", it's not an enquiry about how you actually are. Responding with "Fine", "Hi", or "How are you" is good. That seems to be the one thing that catches Amerricans out more than most. Food is I hear cheaper over here, but I guess you'll figure that out for yourselves. Our shops are required to include VAT (sales tax) in the price shown on the product and/or shelf. So there's no surprise when you get to the till (checkout). Most online outlets over here work in the same way. We also (according to most Americans) say "Sorry" far too much/often. We disagree on that, we think we say it just enough. Try the Tea, try the Clotted Cream Scones, travel around and see the place, and enjoy it. Remember "Drive on the left hand side of the road" (practice will make that easier). Our Emergency services number is different (999 instead of 911). I'm told (although I've never tried it) that 911 does work over here and connect you to 999. As does 112 (that's the European emergency services number) 112 from a mobile phone also automatically feeds your location to the emergency operator. A 999 call from a landline also gives the phone location to the operator (although they'll still ask for it) I can't imagine you'll need to use those numbers at all, at least I hope not. But I thought I'd mention it just because of how many Americans I see on 999 videos on YT who don't seem to know about the different numbers we have over here. As an Englishman I can also recomend Wales and Scotland, both lovely places if you get there.

Country code in the phone number. UK is 44 so you would dial +44, which amounts to 0044. If you need to specify the country you're calling, you add this at the start of the number and remove the first digit (in the UK the first digit is always 0). If you're calling a UK number from a UK phone, you will _never_ need to add the country code, it's presumed you're calling the same country unless you start by dialing a + (00).

Americans say UK then only talk about England as if it is the UK. Most English people in the comments also fail to spot this and pick them up as sadly it’s a downfall of English people to be ok with letting other nations ignore the other 3 countries that make up the UK. Not all English people are like this but it does make it embarrassing when virtually nobody picks it up. Visit Scotland, Northern Ireland & Wales to get a true feel of the UK. England is just one part and even that varies greatly.
@forevercomputing4 жыл бұрын
The +44 is mostly for people outside of the UK. You can get away without the leading zero in many instances. It's what happens when "English" is a side language. Unfortunately, you and your family would be the ones with the accent. if you're not local. The problem is, the U.K. has loads of American films from all sorts of locations and we kind of get the idea. However, the other way around and you ask what British films have been watched and the list will be very very small. It's like going to any country in Asia and wondering why they give you drum sticks when you want a knife and fork.

What a quick move! But on small points - If you have a small house, the washing machine is in the kitchen, but in other suburbs and areas you have a utility room. Also depends on how old the property is and size again. There are *no strings in bathrooms unless you have a very old and non-refurbished post-war property!* Southwest London, Manchester, Birmingham and all the smaller cities too - if you drive about 20 miles into the suburbs then there are plenty of areas with just mile after mile of detached houses and they will not have washing machines in the kitchen! I couldn't stand that to be honest. But it's good listening to your experiences. Your cars though...you should have imported if you wanted - would've been fine.

@travelingfamilyoffive4 жыл бұрын
It’s so simple yet I found it so hard -haha. I think too many things was hitting me all at once. I did a video American guessing British slang 😊 and I do hope to do a part 2. Or maybe tell you the part of how it was in the UK at first 😊

It works both ways. I moved to US on short notice n- the Visa process takes forever. I spent a month in a rented apartment with no furniture, just a rented bed, with Workman and 1 CD.

It's gonna be hard for kids to adapt to England from the US. I just don't believe there are as many options and opportunities for kids over here that you have in America. You have amazing accents!. Keep us updated.
@lordkabal20104 жыл бұрын
Erm there is as many options in the UK so I don't understand as to how you came to that conclusion is there anything that you can accomplish that you can't here.... As everyone knows the North American education system is abysmal compared.

Great Video, one thing I picked up on though. You mentioned have to add +44 or taking away/adding numbers to a telephone number in the UK. +44 would be a country code ie if you were calling the UK from outside the UK. Just like +001 would be for the US. other than that area or city codes would be the same as any other country.
@baylessnow4 жыл бұрын
+44 is a zero on a mobile (cell) phone number.
@arwelp4 жыл бұрын
sgtspite The US (the whole NANP area, including Canada and much of the Caribbean, actually) is +1 on a mobile phone, not +001. If you miss out the +, then it’s 001 from Europe including the UK, just as dialling the UK from the US is either +44 or 01144.

In all fairness the UK as a whole is about the size of one state in America. So it’s natural for most to only know the biggest City. I wouldn’t think Europeans know ALL about our 50 states and the different culture in each.

If you asked me to draw a picture of an American family from the South, I would have imagined this family - healthy looking, good teeth, great hair etc - of course not all Brits have terrible teeth, but my dentist in the 1970s was known as the butcher so mine are not great lol !
@travelingfamilyoffive4 жыл бұрын

Plenty of other nationalities as well. London is very polyglot, but even English as spoken in various areas is very varied, try Scouse, Geordie, Weegie, Belfast or Brum. Then you get the various languages like Welsh, Gaelic, Lowland Scots. Then you get the variations within areas too, you used to be able to tell which bit of London someone comes from, although not so easy now. Of course half the phone helplines are based in Mumbai.

Glad your family have settled well in the U.K. Interesting your comment about the international phone code +44 or 0044, all countries have them the USA is just +1 or 001. Seen your taste videos, thought you could do one about ice creams, I noticed Tesco sell an Oreo stick sandwich ice cream coated in Cadbury’s chocolate & there maybe others in the stores you & your family could try. Stay safe and all the best to you all.
