This is where you meet reality as suppose to reaction. For most foreigners especially Americans, they think that this is just a made up story but the truth is this reality even exist in today's US standard practice. I lived in the US too long to know the difference between right or wrong and made up stories. The only thing I could criticized on the video is that I wish he could explain more on the negative part so that it could be understood as a lesson but not as a downer but as you said this is a hard reality to swallow if you are an American. @@Kafagway unfortunately the US did some heinous things in the Philippines. It was seen by some then that the only way to control the Philippines was to break the spirit. It is a terrible tactic, but something they learned to do following the Spanish. In the end the US didn't want a colony as much as an outpost in that part of the world and worked with the nationalists to set up a government that didn't get a good start until after the war.

@@signalizer it’s war. It’s never a good sight to behold. Japan did a lot of heinous stuff too but we somehow managed to get past it. The senate debated on whether to keep the Philippines as a territory…but half of them wanted to give us our independence just like they did Cuba. Where’s Cuba now? Even Quezon, who is the proponent for Philippine independence sided with the US because they were doing what they promised to do- in exchange for a post to make sure they have presence in the area, a decision that was crucial for when WW2 began. One of the main reason the US occupied us was because Japan started to flex and had their sights on the Philippines. I detest one-sided “documentaries” because of its misleading narrative. Me,personally speaking for myself had moved on and thankful to those who had invaded us for what we had learned/adopted like Christianity and form of government and constitution etc. This is as it is, history. We learned our lessons the hard way but those were what made us who we are now. Thank you anyway for watching a part of our history. Although US government had manipulated us twice, the preww2 and the modern one ( read George Schultz’s Turmoil and Triumph and Pres. Ronald Reagan’s diary) But don’t worry we accept and are friendly with Americans even when there are still Americans who looked down on us and treat us like trash. Our present president PBBM in spite of what was done to his father still looked at US as an ally based on our treaty between US and PH.

You were right, "Past is past".. We historically know that every colonizers just need the resources of the places they take.. But on the lighter side, hey, America did made true with itd promise of granting independence to the Philippines. And you did great things as well.. Infrastructures were developed. We had our own "commonwealth " government. And the best part of it is that, After the Jones Act of 1916,Uncle Sam prepared us for a still "unscheduled time-frame" (the initial time was more or less after 30 years, I think)of an independence. Then Tydings-McDuffie Law of 1934 clearly stated that : independence will be given to the Philippines after 10 years. So it's supposed to be 1944 but since Japan invaded us, it was delayed by 2 years.. But still, US made true to its promise of giving us independence on July 4, 1946. So, thank you, America

To the lady host, the document you might want to check is the Treaty of Paris of 1898. For historical context before, during & after American occupation of the Philippines, there's the various papers of H. Otley Bayer, the Tydings-McDuffie Act passed by the US Congress in 1934, Philippine History for High Schools by Gregorio F. Zaide & a few other sources I can't remember now, but these would be to start with. Most of Philippine history during the colonial era (1521-1946) are written by white men, that is, written for, during & about a period when white men thought themselves at the top of the food chain & behaved accordingly. It is difficult to piece together the story of my peoples history as my ancestors lived & experienced the brutal end of a colonizers whip. But those of us who are alive today bear the marks of that whip in the intergenerational trauma that still affects every Filipino today.

This is great video, no not offensive at all. I’m so glad that that your channel has gotten more matured and taken the next step forward. Yes, there’s no more animosity about the past , but this part of our history is very important to be shared because this is still happening today. Freedom loving people all over the world hopefully, knowing this, would bind together and help the small and weak countries against invasions.

John ny Harris did a good research. At the university, we called that war the Mock Battle of Manila, 1898. According to Wikipedia… The Battle of Manila (Filipino: Labanan sa Maynila; Spanish: Batalla de Manila), sometimes called the Mock Battle of Manila, was a land engagement which took place in Manila on August 13, 1898, at the end of the Spanish-American War, four months after the decisive victory by Commodore Dewey's Asiatic Squadron at the Battle of Manila Bay.

FYI Gen. Ricarte and his men (the Katipuneros) had already surrounded the City of Intramuros. There was no more fighting between the Filipinos and the Spaniards. Gen. Ricarte was just waiting for the Spanish Governor General to surrender. Then an American officer arrived with a letter from Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo that this American officer will take over. Gen. Ricarte was devastated and with a sadden (or teary eyes) left for Japan and never set foot in the Philippines again.

Nope, Ricarte came back during WW2 Japanese occupation of the Philippines. He became a mediator between the Japs and the remaining local fighting force. Thus we were given by the Japs independence and was permitted to establish our own govt, which is in truth just a puppet government. Which the so called ex president Aguinaldo instantly joined in.

Yes let bygones be bygones but the american government should still properly apologize and pay their dues to the Philippines. America didn't even pay back filipino military veterans who were promised rewards for fighting in WW2. They don't even reflect and teach you the fact that americans, for the few years that they were in the Philippines, ACTUALLY MURDERED MORE THAN SPAIN despite the hundreds of years that Spain was there! Accountability is important. We're not going to demand that you apologize for something that you personally didn't do but your government should be held accountable and be honest on what they did.

I was born in Baguio of parents from the Mountain provinces which was not conquered by the Spaniards. I am so glad that USA liberated the Philippines from the Spanish Empire. If they did not do that the Filipinos were treated as slaves by the Spaniards. Even when the Spanish left, some of their descendants that were left in the Philippines were so snobbish against the Filipinos. Besides I’d rather be under the USA than under Spain. Spain did not even like the Filipinos educated whereas the Americans brought Episcopalian or Anglican religion and trained the Igorots to become priest and in English unlike the Spanish who made most of the Filipinos Roman Catholic. They did train Filipinos to become catholic priest and they were saying mass in Greek or Latin.

This is all documented. This isn't new information - to those who've read more than a page of history, of course. He's just simplifying the narration. 😮 ...one reason why the former Philippine president Duterte was quite pissed by the hypocrisy of some U.S. political leaders. 😊

Please read the Treaty of Paris (1898) to apprise yourselves on how the U.S. ended its war (?) against Spain in effect "liberating the Philippines from Spanish Colony (?????)"
@mar016058 ай бұрын
Of course, as an American you don't need to be ashamed at all, and i hope you stand your ground to anyone says otherwise. For me we just need to acknowledge that this happens to both our ancestors, something to learn from. And our ancestors and heroes do not teaches us to victimized ourselves, instead be proud of their bravery and sacrifices, "Long live Philippines, Oust Spanish" they shouted. Anyway, i enjoy your reactions, specially your conviction that you are not to blame, cause you're not, god bless you sir & madam. Note: John Harris simplified things too much, that number of things is skewed, as someone who reads a lot of history, he's off by a lot.

this is not something that is negative on your channel.. its just the truth and facing facts. as a filipino student back then; we were taught about how much the usa paid spain for the philippines in the treaty of paris; we were expected to remember the date of that event, remember the names of roosevelt, mckinly, mc arthur, as almost heroes that saved us; but nothing negative really about the U.S. and their intentions, it was never explained by any history teacher. I hope you dont shy away from uncomfortable truths because it may reach more people thru your channel
