The thing about Eurovision that a lot of people don’t realize is that it isn’t a talent show or a singing contest it’s a song contest. That’s why it’s fully original songs and not just covers of famous songs. Also that’s why the best singer doesn’t always win. Also it’s really important to have a great staging and overall performance as well. That’s what makes it so much fun!

All those other contests are talent contests... this is a song contest. The artists performing are often well established with lots of experience. The point of Eurovision is to vote for the best song, not the best artist... though it can be debated how well that end up working.

One of the biggest misnomers about Eurovision is that it is all political voting. Don't get me wrong, there has been *some* in the past, but not nearly as high as the reputation suggests. It stands to reason that people from the same region, or neighbouring countries, will enjoy the same types of music.

The Eurovision Song Contest is run by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). It should be noted that members of the EBU do not need to be in Europe and any full member can enter a song should they so wish. Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey, Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan are all full members. Israel, Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan are regular entrants and both Morocco and Turkey have entered in the past. Australia is an associate member, but because the song contest is so popular "down under", they have been invited to compete in recent years.

My 6 year old watched it for the first time this year. He stayed up all the way until the end! He was incredibly sad during the day because of Joost, but in the end he found a new favourite: Switzerland. So he was happy by the end of the night. My 4 year old went to bed after 2 songs or so, but he watched it in the morning. Ireland was his favourite. It brought back so many memories from my own childhood though! There were two nights a year when I could stay up as long as I wanted to, new years eve and Eurovision eve. Out of those two, Eurovision eve was my favourite hands down. I like that this is sort of a universal experience Europeans all share.

No country is entering bad songs intentionally. You don't HAVE TO host, but it's a great honor and everyone wants to win. You can choose to just not participate in the first place if you can't afford it. Also, people didn't give the UK 0 points because of Brexit; the song was just that bad.

One Eurovision song that goes under the radar is 'nel blu dipinto di blu' which was the Italian entry in 1958 and came third. It was sung by Domenico Modugno and did very well in both Italy and the States. At this time other versions of the song came out and one of them was by Dean Martin and it was renamed 'Volare'. The rest is history. There is KZbin footage of Modugno singing this at the 1958 Eurovision Contest.

What's amazing about the Eurovision is the level of production that goes into the broadcast. It is consistently one of the world's most viewed live broadcasts and gets more viewers than the Super Bowl. From a purely technical level pulling off a broadcast of this scale and level, with so many moving parts is incredibly impressive. There are a few great behind the scenes videos over on EventElevator's youtube channel from recent years. I'd also recommend watching videos of the crew changing over the stage between performances - they only have about 50 seconds to clear the stage and set up the new set, it's in-sane! WSJ's YT channel has a good breakdown of it ("The Complex Logistics of the World’s Biggest Live Music Event"). I was sure I saw a bunch of clips from a stage hand's GoPro, but I can't find it right now, it's amazing!

Guys, first thing I'm gonna tell you is that I'm a huge Eurovision geek from the UK, and I've hosted many Eurovision party's and Europe takes Eurovision VERY SERIOUSLY, ITS A BIG DEAL ( people like to think that is not, but everyone watchs it) it's is the equivalent to a musical Olympics and in some case build a brand new venue to host the event and apartments to the performers. EUROVISION lasts a whole week with press interviews and presentations. The first semi-final is on Tuesday, and the second semi-final is on a Thursday with the final on Saturday. The real star of the show is the second half of the final us the voting, it's very stressful I can tell you, especially last year, with the very unpopular Swiss winner, so 2025 will be in the very exclusive Switzerland.

If you need one song to sum up all the craziness that is Eurovision, I'd go for Verka Serduchka - Dancing Lasha Tumbai (it's the song with the tin foil looking outfits). It's from 2007, and they came in second (!). The song is pretty much a chaotic mess, but I feel that it sums up the madness and chaotic energy of Eurovision quite well :)

That video was a good introduction to Eurovision, but I noticed they kind of exaggerated the "not wanting to win" aspect of it all. Eurovision has had a bit of a glow-up since COVID, Måneskin became a massive success story out of it and basically everyone who participates takes it seriously. Some countries have left because they don't respect the LGBTQ+advocacy (Hungary, Turkey), others cannot participate anymore cause it's too expensive (Bulgaria, Romania for example). This was my first time visiting your channel, would love to see some more Eurovision-reactions! 😊

The Eurovision is very fun to watch. In my family, its tradition to make snacks and watch the whole final together (I personally don't watch the semi-finals - spoilers). We sit for approx. 4 hours, eat, make fun of some songs/attire choices etc., enjoy the better songs, make some bets on who will win. The voting is fun, too, cause it can subvert expectations. It has been getting less and less geographically-oriented, but it is still political and social (which has its good and bad sides). Check it out next year, you'll have fun. 😁

This video was apparently made before the results of Eurovision 2023, in which Sweden won for a 7th time, matching Ireland, with the only WOMAN to win twice, Loreen (2012, 2023) As she is also a songwriter, there is a distinct possibility she could match Johnny Logan in that category as well - she actually co-wrote her 2023 song, so take that for what you will). Important note though.... all of Ireland's victories came well before the Eastern Bloc and Ex-soviet/Ex-Yugo nations entered the contest en masse - with its final victory in 1994 being with only 25 contestant countries, and the first time the Eastern countries were majorly represented (total of 9, but then . At that time the contest was being limited in total contestants - only to expand later on. As opposed to Sweden which has four of it's seven victories since 1998 onward, that being the year the Eastern nations really began to be very active. in 2004 a Semi-finalk phase was added and the active participants shot up to 36, and peaking at 43 in 2008 and 2011 ( never again dropping below 37 (2024). Part of that decline is fascist regimes in Hungary and Turkey, with Belarus and Russia being banned for violating the EBU concepts etc***. But it does mean that Sweden won its 2012, 2015, and 2023 contests against far more competition than Ireland did. ***[Belarus refused to retract its overtly politically propagandistic song in 2021, and Russia was expelled for obvious reasons in 2022. Israel failing to be expelled for the same reason caused a literal earthshattering conflict at the contest in 2024, and most people suspect they werent banned because the main sponsor of the contest was a major Israeli company - obviously the EBU would never admit to such a thing however.]

Also it isn’t like a TV talent show, we have those too, but more of a music festival, it is a great way to show our pride for being united and to interact with people from other countries and share our culture and art. These are full, talented musicians putting on a masterful show (and having some fun), much love and I hope to see more Eurovision stuff from you ❤

Also it is a live show so there has sometimes been people's slipups, microphone problems, technical problems and stage invades over the years. It is all good fun and part of the show

Even though it's not easy to guess nowadays from the way the competition is run it's actually the song, not the artist, competing. Back in the day sometimes the same artist performed all entries in the national decider and sometimes artist was swapped out between the national competition and the international final.

There's one key piece of information that's often missed but is, in my eyes, crucial for any explain-Eurovision video: Eurovision is a network that allows television broadcasters from different countries in Europe to send live content to any other connected broadcaster. It was initially installed in the 50s and was kind of a big thing back then. To showcase it, they came up with the idea of having a big Saturday evening show of the kind that was well-established in Europe back then. However, there was one tiny issue---language. You can't very well have a live game or quiz show in a dozen languages at once. However, a song contest is mostly language-independent... The network later got used for those big Saturday evening shows---by Germany, Switzerland and Austria (and sometimes Luxemburg, Netherlands and Belgium joining in) as they share a language. Everyone who's old enough will still remember hearing the Eurovision fanfare being played when those big shows started, announcing that the same live show was being broadcast in multiple different countries. Sending live video around the world is not a big thing nowadays, but back then, even going live from anywhere but the main studio was an accomplishment, and internationally sending tapes by courier was the standard.

And in case you're wondering, Eurovision is the organisation/association of European TV broadcasters. Non Euro countries can be members eg SBSTV Australia, and places like Azerbaijan and Israel. Hence why they are in the Eurovision Song Contest. Australia has been broadcasting it since the early 80s and we were invited once and haven't left since LOLOLOL

It is not true. Actor Andriy Danylko, who plays the role of Verka Serdyuchka, repeatedly talked about this in an interview, these costumes were created by him and his creative team. Perhaps such a myth arose about this suit, because this artist has a song about how she (Verka) walks down the street in Dolce & Gabbana clothes. Hello from Ukraine, Kyiv❤✌️

I'm not sure how true it is that countries deliberately enter bad songs to avoid winning. For example, in the UK there is a pre-contest public vote on which of several songs we should put forward- and I think something like that happens inmost places. Ukraine's entry was a deserving winner on its own merits - although international sympathy may have increased their lead somewhat.

What I forgot to mention is that between the singers doing the song and the votes being presented, there is a break to allow the votes to be collected. The host country usually showcase their country's musical heritage and popular artists. For our sins in 1974 when Abba won we had 'The Wombles'! They were a group based on a kids show about a group of creatures that used to clean up Wimbledon Common and were very big at the time. I can remember Aqua (Barbie Girl) doing something when Denmark hosted and this year because it was 50 years since Abba won, there was a homage to them as Sweden were hosting. In 1994 when Ireland hosted they did a music and dance routine which was based on Irish traditional dance. It was a big hit. It was called 'Riverdance'. Whatever happened to that!!!!! Another winning song that I loved was 'Poupee de Cire, Poupee de Son' by a lady called France Gall who was French but represented Luxembourg in 1965. Up to then most of the winners were ballads and sounded very fifties, but this song was much more uptempo and had a real sixties vibe about it.

As far as Greece and Cyprus are concerned, yes, there is some degree of voting for one's friends but I've always thought that a much bigger factor was the tendency of both countries to enter songs in the Greek language and with something of an authentic Greek sound i.e. bouzouki music. Cyprus didn't do that this year and got a much lower vote from Greece than usual.

Hello only recently discovered your channel and love you guys. I am a huge Eurovision fan. the first contest i remember waatching was 1973 held in Luxemburg. First one major thing he has got wrong. There is no rule that says the winning country HAS to host the following year. Yes its an honour to do so, and yes most countries do but they can decline and have done for various reasons in the past. For instance the year I mentioned 1973, Luxemburg won again and declined to host two years in a row due to cost. The UK voluntered and ABBA had their victory here in Brighton, England. The rule is also that no act can have more than 6 performers on stage. The song can last no more than 3 minutes. One song prior this rule lasted nearly 5 and a half minutes. Protest songs about current conflicts are not allowed. Jamala got away with her song about invasion during the year Russia invaded Crimea as the conflict she was singing about was in 1944 (though many similarities). The so called rubbish/troll songs entered are often ones the public have had a hand in voting to enter into the contest even though they are rather nuts. He sited the French entry Mustache. But France are very eager to have a victory as they have won 5 times but nothing since 1977. They have come close recently with a 2nd and 3rd place in the last couple of years. Until 2000 the UK was probably the most consistant country with 5 wins and 15 2nd places and rarely not in the top 5. Since 2000 we have only had marginal succes with 1 3rd, 1 5th and one 2nd place (Sam Ryder). Several times we have found ourselves last. Sam came second to the Ukraine song and if the invasion hadn't happened would have won hands down. But even he said it was the correct result. His career has skyrocketed since. You should try and watch this years contest it was great. My favorites were Germany, Norway, France and Switzerland. They two I hated were Finland and Estonia. The Dutch entry got through to the final but was disqualified due to a backstage incident which is being investigated. There was a lot of discent about Isreal taking part but I liked the song and it did very well. Our song should have done better. I never thought it would win but should have got on the left hand side of the scoreboard at least.

It is not clear why you call the genocide of the Crimean Tatar people a conflict? The genocide, by the way, continues right now. Let's call the Holocaust a conflict. It is even more infuriating when modern Ukrainian-Russian war is called a war for democracy, Ukrainian conflict etc. Although in fact it is a struggle for survival and an attempt to avoid another genocide of the Ukrainian nation. Maybe you need to start calling a spade a spade?
