@@Prafik614And don’t forget. If you are,say, spanish, but live in France and have a french phonnumber, then you can vote for Spain. So countries that have big groups of citizens living in other European countries will benefit from this. One example is the Ukraine. They will get sympathy votes because of the ongoing invasion, but they also have a large part of their population currently living in other countries, and therefore are able to vote for their own country. The system it not perfect, but it works well enough and there is a jury to balance out the biggest flucuations. It has happened on multiple occasions that the winner didn’t win the popular OR the jury vote, but won the total.

And to be fair I think that is why you see some countries always give each other’s neighbour countrie 12 points, not because the are neighbours but because they share a certain taste of music. But I LOVE Eurovision and have watched it since the 70’s every year. Next Saturday the Danish Eurovision will start and we’ll see who will win to try and get to the international Eurovision. This is massive. I watched my first Eurovision tht i can remember in 1973 and never looked back. The average viewing audience for this is double + that of the Superbowl. They did try a public only vote for a few years but decided after some issues to go to a 50/50% split of jury and public vote. ABBA are without doubt the most sucessful artists from the contest going on to become the second biggest selling group worldwide after the Beatles. This year is the 50th anniversary of their win and due to Loreens win for Sweden last year it is going to be hosted in Malmo. One thing the guy got wrong is that the winning country does not HAVE to host the following year. It is offered to them first but they can decline. The French would love to win/host again as they haven't done so since thier last win in 1977, so the entry of the Moustache song was not for the purpose of avoiding that.

Currently the power is split 50/50 between the juries and the general public. The issue this can cause, is when the general public has a clear favorite that the juries don't agree with, as it might mean that another song wins. That doesn't necessarily mean that the other song didn't deserve to win, but whenever the general public's favorite doesn't win it sparks a debate about if the right song won. An example of this is last year's competition, where the public gave most votes to Finland and second most votes to Sweden - but Sweden ended up winning because Finland didnt get enough points from the jury. As a Swede I'm torn, because I really loved our entry and the singer deserved to win - but so did Finland's singer who put on an amazing performance, which I also absolutely loved. Personally, I the power should be divided 60/40, with the general public having the bigger majority. That way this particular issue would be less likely to happen.

I love the debate of public vs jury vote. The issue is that, due to the European open frontiers and mass economic migration in the 50's and 60's, as well as cultural and religious groups, the voting by public is always deformed. For example, Belgium and Germany use to give 12 points to Turkey every time when only public votes were counted due to our huge Turkish community here, Armenia comming a close second (now nearly always first). When the Israeli media and government (though eurovision is non political) says you have to vote for Israel (or a Jewish singer in another country) they will get those vote and the other country will get the 12 points from Israel. This was the extreme case in 2024, where Tali from Luxembourg knew she would get the 12 points from Israel well before the show started. And the entire Jewish community voted for Israel, getting them a huge public vote. As long as there is war in the Ukraine, they will also get massive votes due to the refugees voting for their own country. Russia was able to buy servers with phone numbers, especially to get huge televotes, this is how they won with a very mediocre song
@alftuvik382011 ай бұрын
This video got one thing wrong, the winner does not have to host the next year, they are just the first to be offered the opportunity to do so and while it's expensive, the gain is a lot bigger than the cost due to the boost in tourism and business. Nobody has chosen to not host after winning since the 80s but it did happen a couple of times in the 60s and 70s, probably even though the cost was probably lower than it is now, there was maybe not much monetary gain like there is now. Ukraine was unable to host last year due to the war, so that's the first time in over 30 years where the winner didn't host. But it's always a choice and clearly something everyone who has won really wanted since they accepted the hosting gig.
@GastonTheGreat8 ай бұрын
The televoting goes like, only the ten most voted on each country gets points (1 to 8 and then 10 and 12). Your song could be quite liked, end up the 11th most voted on every country and still get 0 points... while a song that's maybe last on every country suddenly is 8th on ONE country and gets 2 points, getting more votes than the mid-liked one. Not the most fair voting system, but televoting has been quite an issue for some years.

Swedish Christer Björkman, Peter Settman and Anders Lenhoff tried to take the concept to the USA with the "American song contest". From what I understand, it has been difficult to get the same hype as there is for Eurovision. Eurovision started and became a tradition when there was only one TV channel, so it's probably harder to make it the same big thing when so much else is competing. There are a lot of conspiracy theories about who won, usually it's prob just that someone is a bad loser. I wouldn't vote for a bad song because I like the country, but sure...if two songs were equally good, which country I'd rather see win would matter.

@@alvdansen7172 Yeah I agree, I believe the UK is heading in a good direction, but a lot of British people and British press would blame their bad scores in the contest on Brexit, and not on their terrible choices. I would like to say, the UK’s 0 points was funny both to us and the artist, he 100% knew he wasn’t going to do well, that’s why he reacted in such a good way. He was supposed to go the year before, but that year was cancelled because of COVID, and it was a considerably better song in his style- everyone was sure the song he got 0 points with was one he wrote for someone else originally, as he couldn’t hit half of it. That’s not the only time something like that has happened either, that 2003 one most likely had some earpiece issues so they couldn’t hear themselves and sounded out of tune because of that, also our 2010 act went on record saying he tried to get the end note of the song changed because he knew he couldn’t hit it but they didn’t let him (it was a BAD note). Up until the last few years it just really felt like the UK would send in sacrifices and give them no real support, glad we’re out of that now… for now anyway.

Very nice reaction video! :) I think too that the US should be included, it would be interesting to hear their songs. I'm actually surprised that there isn't a song contest in the USA among the states. Regarding politics, that might be a bit exaggerated, even though it's rather suspicious that the Scandinavian countries always love their neighbours' songs best. Maybe they have the same taste. :D I always vote the song I like best, but sometimes it's hard to decide. One info in the video is a bit hard to believe though, it probably started with one youtuber who made the claim first, and then it spread. In my view, the claim that some countries deliberately try to lose, so they don't have to host the contest next year, is ridiculous. Firstly, the host country earns so much from the admission fees, tourists etc., that it might be a win-win. And secondly, there are the songwriters (it is actually a songwriters contest) and the singers. Not a single one of them wants to lose. Winning Eurovision could be their great breakthrough, and surely, no one wants to look like an idiot in front of half the world. There is a pre-selection in every country, where songwriters and their singers apply and give their very best for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I mean, if you want to reach an audience of billions of people, this is it! The audience has a vote and would surely not want to send a bad song either, so the best of them is sent to Eurovision. This claim is so unfair to the artists who work very hard, and it would also mean the viewers are being cheated. Shame on the person who was just assuming things and spread this rumour first! As for the songs, I love most of the very first songs of the 50s and 60s, e.g. "Non ho l'eta" by a young girl from Italy, Gigliola Cinquetti, or the very first winner "Refrain" by Lys Assia from Switzerland. Also many later ones, e.g. by Johnny Logan and others from Ireland, also Sweden, Denmark and others make great songs, it's hard to decide. :)

USA (NBC broadcaster) has started an "American Song Contest" in 2022, but the show was canceled after one edition because of low ratings. I agree with the "trying to lose" statement. I always see it as an inside joke within the fandom that people took it out of context. Every country wants to win of course, but there is only 1 winner for 40ish countries, so doing the math it might take you 40 years to win once. Luckily, I think the idea of Eurovision being a joke is slowly fading out. Countries like France, UK, Serbia, and Finland are now all sending radio hit artists from their local music industry that they wouldn't be able to attract the same way 10 years ago.

Johnny Logan have won three times, he was not performing the last time. It`s the song, not the artist that wins the competition. Rolv Løvland from Norway won in 1985 and 1995.

I've only been to one concert ever and that was rock/metal my favorite band: lord of the lost, who took part in esc last year - they got last place and its not a big surprise. Like they said, most of the time their kind of music doesnt get placed high up) and its definitely a mood 😂 i think thats one of the kinds of music where live vs just mp3 is a biiig difference

Getting 0 points doesn't mean, nobody v8tes for you, because not every country gives points to every country. It doesn't matter how many voted for you, it just depends on if there is another country more people voted for. Yoj see all votes from italians for excample will get counted and then, the country the most italians voted for gets 12 points. The second most votes gets 10 points and then so on 8, 7, 6, 5... So only the Top 10 of countrys that recieved from from italy actually gets points. So even if the UK was in every countrys Top on number 11, they would end up having 0 points, while germany for excample was last every Top but came 3rd in just one, they would get 8 points and be placed higher than UK. And the voting is splitted into jury and televote. First every jury will show it's Top 10 on their own so they are slowly coming in points. Then after all jurys gave their points. The at the moment lowest placed country will recieve all points from any countrys public at once. So no points just means you weren't in any publics or jurys Top 10, not that nobody voted for you

I think more than politics the regional voting has to do with the fact that people more close to each other culturally tend to like same kind of music too. Because all of this is gone when there is a super good, joining people together song every once in a while, and it will get votes from everywhere. That being said, Ukraine's win 2022 was to be expected and it wa due to the war - though the song was very good, and i think it would have reached the top5 any year. Ukraine has won several times before. React to Geography now!s explanation of eurovision :) And watch the will ferrel movie!

The problem with the White Stripes sample / bar copies is that, as per the rules of the contest, all songs must be brand new, written later than September of the previous year. If it included a sample, that song should have been disqualified from participating.

No Israel 2018 didn't win because of the chicken impression. It won because it was the MeToo year and it was a song relating a bit to that subject.

I hope this comes across right!... I think the US wouldn't "get" Eurovision, they'd take it really seriously and enter an amazing artist with an amazing song with the intention of winning. Obviously that's not a bad thing and is fully intended as a compliment, but it's just not really what Eurovision is about. It's crazy, it's camp, and it's a good opportunity for us all to laugh at ourselves. Winning isn't necessarily the point. Basically... you'd have to sink to our level to take part 😄

Talent is talent but people do not consider other things that might influence voting. Let's take for example Greece and Cyprus, yes they might be considered different countries but they speak the same language they have the same customs, they have almost the same culture same religion same people, if you like Greek songs you will like songs from Cyprus because they both sing in Greek that is the way culture works it is not always politics, you will vote the most familiar thing to you, that is why English people vote for Ireland, that is why Scandinavian countries vote for each other etc. And by the way there were several instances where Greece did not give their best points to Cyprus and vice versa. By the way this is a VERY bad video that did an awful at explaining and showcasing Eurovision.

thank you for this.. we the ppl of europe worship this talentshow.! Lets talk about the political points in esc.. this year iceland has a palestinian musician competing for us and Palestine is banned from ESC and because of the ongoing war we are sure ot be taking the simpathetic vote this year!
@sjusovare9 ай бұрын
Palestine is not banned from the ESC because of the war, Palestine isn't even banned from the ESC at all, Palestine just never was part of the contest, simply because Palestine never fit the criterias to enter since it never even had a public broadcaster to enter a contestant representing itself (the only time we saw palestinian artists in the contest, they were representing Israel, not Palestine) The only country banned from the contest is Russia, which I think is a mistake (and where the EBU precisely took a political decision, ironically trying to prevent the contest from being political), since the contest would have been the only mass reaching TV broadcast in Russia that the russian government could not control and censor

Video is bit oversimplifying, people don't vote for allies, they vote for for what they like, but in most cases that means voting for a neighboring country or culturally close country because they have similar music or similar taste in music, or same artists and type of music are popular in those countries. In 2021 besides UK, Germany, Spain and Netherlands also got 0 points from public votes, because they had the worst song out of all 26 in the finals, and not of Brexit or some other stuff.
@lisethomsen57497 ай бұрын
That video is so outdated, that your are watching, because Ireland is in fact in 1st place of winning most contest yes, but now they are in 1st place with sweden, because Sweden won last year, 2023, so Ireland has 7 wins, and Sweden also have 7 wins in total

its called Eurovision song contest as in the european trading zone so why would the usa be kept out? XD dont worry u arent the only contrys that arent there i mean russia is banned from the contest for now and no pureley asian country ever participatet either i think the telephon votes are messed up only the 10 or twelf most votet for countrys get any points at all (and u can not call for ur own country) Now imagine u write a test and u would have enough points for a c+ but becouse 10 people are better than u you get 0 points failed XD i dont think this is fair yeh mainly becouse i am sad about germany always ending up on last or second last place for a view years now we dont have to win but last place come on (although the song sisters deserved the last place ) i also think they should do the rule again that u only can sing in an official language of ur country but to the adition that the song only needs to be in this language 70% means u cna mix with other languages and that if ur country has multiple official languages u need to switch it up every year (so that swizerland does not win just couse they sing in french every year in the past before they got rid of the language rule mostly english and french speaking/sounding countrys won the majority of the wins lyes definetly on those 2 so thats peobaply why they got rid ofthe language rule but i am for at least havin a song in ur native tounge every second year becouse language is beautifull
