One thing we love about Geography Now is just how much information they can cram into one small video. We had to go back and watch this thing three times though to try and take it all in! WOW this was a great episode! We learned so much, and yet we still know so little about this amazing country. If you have any other videos, let us know down in the comments below, as well as in our Discord!

Great video as always guys! The caste system in modern day India is like the KKK in modern day USA. Technically the caste system still exists in certain isolated rural pockets of India but it's a sad tiny shell of it's former self. When I talked to Indians in major Indian cities, most of them couldn't even tell me what caste they were because they're all mixed up now.

1:30 see this is the ignorance of westerners about India (thanks to global ignorant biased media/academia) ... the word "Caste" itself is a from a Portuguese word only introduced in India few centuries ago and British Colonials were the first ones to do a "Caste Census & classification" in 19th century (inspired by class system in their own UK). British used their "Divide & Rule" Policy for twisting things What India had originally was 2 DIFFERENT SYSTEMS - Jati & Varna .. and they mean different thing for that ancient age Varna System - Based on what profession you are good at ... NOT BASED on BIRTH .. NOT HEIRARCHY ! Jati System - Based on "Groupings" ... Groupings can be of Humans or Animals or Tress .. based on type or place of BIRTH These systems were essential to admin society in olden times as was their intended objective ... soon the people of Varna started passing on their profession knowledge to their children and future generation so Varna System also essentially became "BIRTH DRIVEN" .. but there was NO HEIRARCHY still It was the Colonials who ignorantly combined & twisted the two as "Caste system" classified it into "HEIRARCHY" thing Also note - Differentiating person based on Caste, Religion, Race, Color, etc is ILLEGAL in India .. and Casteism is punishable offence .. infact previously "considered" lower caste people are given gov subsidiaries. But bad people are everywhere ... hence casteism is alive in unofficially amongst some ignorant traditionalists specially in rural areas

I agree in the modern times, the social reform is such that now people who even talk about caste are mostly looked at with a raised eyebrow, as they are considered as people with a backwards mindset. Also we have had big political leaders from would be 'lower castes' and tribes. Including the current president who is a both women (one of the very few country to have a women leader at the top step) and a tribal lady. Sadly yes, the system still exist in small villages and towns at some places, but understandably it takes time to deal with these things.

Hey, please like the comment if you read my it, it would mean a lot. So cast system did exist in India for many hundred years, and it has been just like what you have said in the beginning of the video. But come on we live in 21st century democracy in India, do you really think this would still persist? India after its independence didn't lose a second and gave the job of writing the constitution to a Dalit person, which apparently was considered lowest of the casts, and ofcourse he was qualified for the job. Castism does exist in very remote villages and for those people life is hard no doubt. But majority of the country, and by that i mean atleast 90% of the population have moved away from these ideas and anyone can can climb socioeconomic ladder if they are capable. I can testify it, because I don't belong to a 'higher cast', and i never have been discriminated against. A note though, inter-cast marriages can still be frowned upon by the society, but i think this will chance once the older generation, for the lack of a better word, dies out. Thanks. And all the best! Subbed!

1. Why are cows worshiped? Ans- In ancient times, babies were given their mother's milk(breastfeeding) at an early age. And later on, the babies use to rely on cows' milk for their growth. So with a respect for the animal's cows are treated as mothers in India too. And worshiped as mothers too. 2. Why the large Vegiteranian population? Ans- As the most intelligent and powerful creature on the earth, it's our responsibility to protect and live in harmony with other creatures. Be as less violent and harmful as possible. Feel free to agree or disagree. But that's what Indians think about eating animals for food. 3. Caste system? Ans- A bitter reality is it did exist in ancient India. No denying that. But it's illegal now and not practiced in major parts of India. It still exists in some rural areas where the people have not developed much. But India as had a Prime minister and president and military chief from the lowest caste also.

In ancient India caste system was called as Varna which was divided into 4 categories based on the work you did. But when the Portuguese and British colonisers arrived they implemented their own caste system which was based on birth. So the Indians were brainwashed for more than 200 yrs and were taught the western caste system. So 99% of indians who are talking about caste system should go and read the original hindu book instead of western propaganda.

The US is 27th in the intergenerational social mobility index, behind pretty much all other countries in Western Europe, the Czech Republic and so on. China is 45th, India is 76th. Source: Wikipedia. The index is prepared by the World Economic Forum.

Ok let me make this very clear, the caste system is ancient and your knowledge is outdated. Discrimination based on caste is illegal in India ever since independence. The country has been working hard to abolish the caste system from every corner and if anything the only place you will hear the mention of caste today is while applying for jobs and universities, NOT for the purpose of discrimination but because Indian government has placed the system of reservation where a percentage of seats in universities and positions in all jobs are reserved for the castes that were exploited due to the caste system, this is done to provide more opportunities and uplift the people from these castes. Today you will see people from the castes once considered lower occupying the highest positions in the country and getting educated in the best universities and earning money from amazing jobs. Yes there are still remote villages where caste system is still practiced but hopefully that will change over time because it is illegal, and you can be arrested for doing so. Slowly we won't even need reservations. P.S The US is so delusional about thinking that they are the flagbearers of equality when India is the country that has had a female President and female Prime Minister and we have also had presidents/prime ministers from variety of religions and we have also had a president from one of the "lower" castes. Our current Prime Minister Modi once sold tea on the side of the street so yeah ypu can make it to the very top from the bottom in India.

The reality is much different from what you know about the cast system. The Indian government has a certain percentage of seats reserved for jobs and universities and stuff like that for the "backward casts" which was introduced to help with their uplifting, but as of today we don't need it anymore but too hard to change it now, the "lower cast" people will basically start huge protests if someone tried. It's a big issue because many people who are like "elite cast" are actually poor and can't find jobs, and its really unfair to them because even though they might deserve the job, the seat is reserved for the "backward cast" instead

Yes most crops are in northern plains but other regions also have it. Also red meat is eaten is India mutton or lamb yes beef is banned in most states but still its like daily food in northeast or kerala or by Muslims in south and kashmir too. Cow is considered sacred in hinduism so its banned in most states but northeast s follows Hinduism too only form of cow they have is yak and they eat that. Caste system actually started differently it was that Brahmins ( priest) are most educated kshtriyas ( kings generals etc) are second most educated third most educated were vaishya or traders farmers pastoralist and last were shudras or unskilled labourer although they were sometimes kings queens as well. Previously Anyone even if born in Brahmin can become a shudra if they didn't educate themselves and any shudra if they educated themsleves can become Brahmin too and it used to happen as well. Then with time idk for what reason that concept changed. Now, people generally dont follow caste system they are leaving that which is good thing. Now anyone can be rich or poor irregardless of caste

was your mom on india tour with christian missionaries? because what she has heard and told you about the caste system sounds a lot like religious propaganda. the caste system is a problem in India especially in rural, tribal areas mostly, and in the rest of the country, it's more of a political problem. with or even without castes there would have been poor people just like it is in your country but becos there is the castes you get something to blame. not defending the caste system btw.

Cows are not the major source of CO2 emissions. Worldwide, as per Wikipedia, "Electricity generation, heat and transport are major emitters; overall energy is responsible for around 73% of emissions.[3] Deforestation and other changes in land use also emit carbon dioxide and methane. The largest source of anthropogenic methane emissions is agriculture, closely followed by gas venting and fugitive emissions from the fossil-fuel industry. The largest agricultural methane source is livestock. Agricultural soils emit nitrous oxide partly due to fertilizers" Cows are not the biggest deal in India either. CO2 emissions are dominated by the burning of fossil fuels for energy production, and industrial production of materials such as cement.

@@TheCommodity Just need one Favour stop thinking Castism belongs to Religion anyway specially in Hinduism .... It said all born same and with education and knowledge you can be anything ... Castism is our Social problem in past which is the product of Politics in kingdoms where to rule people Big Kings made this custome only king will be king and from his family rest people to control the protest old kings decided to divide people so nobody can raise Flag against thrown and that become custome all over and successfully run and most close people called Higher class so basically that was political and after that Muslim Invader exploited that against Indian people to rule and then Britishers divided people above that they divided on basis of Religion to main aim to govern and rule India and loot our resources ..... Castism basically the product and tool of Politics to take hold on people divide and rule...... Now we realised that we'll modern day Indian don't give a damn about it.... Yes some old people and some crazy still beleive in that but Majourity came out of that phase .... But West is so unaware associating castism as Hinduism which is because of lack of awareness ..... But we Indians never give up ... 10000 years oldest Civilization Religion in the World , we have seen everything and tested every poison in the World still alive and strong ... I am not offended by your description of the caste system. That's the way it was in the past. Today things have changed except the rural areas. But I am more offended that you don't know the topic in depth. Yeah today things have changed. We have the reservation system to counter the repercussions of the old caste system. But was caste system mentioned in the Bhagawat Gita same as the caste system in the present form? No, Lord Krishna never said you can't change your caste. You can change your caste according to your skills. It was set for the proper functioning of the society. But some greedy upper caste & outsiders exploited this law and changed it by bringing two hard laws. No. 1 that Brahmins are the highest caste. And no. 2 that you can't change your caste. Slowly people started to think in terms of upper & lower castes.
