It's crazy how all of the Southeast Asian countries we react to have so much history in common. It seems as though you are all brothers and sisters in the end, even though there might be differences, and that is amazing!

My 90 y.o Grandma who was also a part of the air force fighting the colonial still live now and we always listened about her story about The Dutch and Japanese occupations back then. This is gonna be long. What foreign videos kinda failed to capture is how Indonesia is actually a successful superstate, the one that the academics projected the EU will be heading to. We were comprised of hundreds sovereign kingdoms and sultanate with different cultural background, languages, and ethnicities (in which some annual events are still held nowadays where the kings and sultans gather together to discuss things). In 1926, young nationalists from all across the kingdoms and sultanate held a youth congress to formulate the best way to repel the colonial forces and agreed on a united body of state. In 1928, the second congress was held which resulted in a declaration known as Youth Pledge. The Youth Pledge promotes 3 main ideals which became the very basis of Indonesian identity. Without understanding this pledge, it would be impossible to understand what makes Indonesia "Indonesia". In a way, this Youth Pledge serves kinda like Maastricht Treaty which was the basic foundation of European Union. The difference is, Maastricht Treaty was founded based on economy and tolerating each other to prevent war whereas Youth Pledge was founded based on unifying the whole Nusantara archipelago as one. They chose Bahasa Indonesia as a unifying tool because with this, no ethnicity and races in the archipelago can claim superiority over others. The kings and sultans relinquish their sovereignty to unite under the banner of "Indonesia" and the people acknowledge Indonesia as their primary nationality and identity, reducing their own local background as a secondary identity (Kinda like if France stopped speaking French and opt to use Esperanto to further integrate EU and acknowledge EU as their nation, reducing France to just be a mere state in EU). Now, the situation with The Japanese "helping and granting" independence is actually debated. But the story I know of is that when the Japanese surrendered to the allies, they wanted to create problem to the Dutch (which, although tried to be neutral, is actually closer to the allied force since the axis took over their territory under the Germans). Thus, the Japanese created a committee to prepare for Indonesian indepence but in reality, it was more of to maintain status quo. The youth leaders then kidnapped the then president candidate, Soekarno, to force him to act quickly and declare Indonesian independence without involving the Japanese in fear of the allied force and the world seeing the independence was "granted and sponsored" by the Japanese, undermining the Indonesian decades of struggle. Long story short, we declared our independence. We once known as United States of Indonesia but as it didn't represent the mentality of what Indonesia is as it lacks cohesive unity proposed as the basis of Indonesia, we changed our name into NKRI (the republic of Indonesia) with the emphasize in "unity". Hence the slogan "NKRI harga mati" (the unity of Indonesia is non-negotiable) with our motto "Bhinneka tunggal ika" or Unity in Diversity (in which EU also used as their motto lol).

In South East Asia.. Only Thailand was not occupied by Japan. It is because, the Thai monarchy allow the Japanese intruder to use their land at malaysian border as a starting point of occupation. Funfact is, the Japanese came 1st time into malaysia by riding a bicycle.

The VOC had more ships than England and France combined. The Netherlands had windmills, which could then be combined with a sawmill. The Netherlands could therefore saw wood 10 times faster than other countries, which saw the wood with the hand.

The movement for Indonesia's independence was already started in 1920s, where on October 28, 1928 a declaration was made by young Indonesian nationalists in the Second Youth Congress, they proclaimed three ideals: one motherland, one nation and one unitary language: Indonesia.

8:20 Portuguese was only spoken in East Timor which ceded from Indonesia in 1999. But Portuguese as well as Dutch colloquials made their ways into Indonesian language. 14:45 PDIP (Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle) was splintered of the original PDI, an opposition party during Soeharto's era. Power struggles at the time saw the party split into pro govenrment PDI and an underground opposition rebranding themselves as PDIP. After Soeharto's fall, PDIP gain alot of votes while the original PDI became irrelevant. 16:20 History is written by the victors. Most of your viewers wouldn't have experience the colonial times and we only read it from history books and classrooms. But Indonesian in general are a forgiving (or forgetful) nation. We do not dwell on the past wrongs of the Dutch and Japanese, in fact Dutch brands such as Frisian Flag, Phillips, KLM Airlines, Rabo-bank, ABN Amro as well as Japanese brands such as Sony, Toyota, Sanyo, Yamaha, Kao, Calbee, etc are popular in Indonesia.

Soekarno is greatly admired by all presidents in the world and John F Kennedy is very respectful and amazed by President Soekarno, USA. Soekarno was threatened, because the pilot was successfully arrested while helping the British and their allies to help the Netherlands to colonize Indonesia, the USA was afraid to reveal its mask, as a substitute Soekarno Asked for 25 Military Transport Planes for free to Jhon F Keneddy, if not their pilots would be legal and would be disseminated to the world media, And many more the USA was very scared at that time with Indonesia, because the USSR was very close to Indonesia and wanted to take the heart of the Indonesian nation at the same time the USA does not want Indonesia to be close to the USSR

1. The Portuguese does leave trace in Indonesia and Timor-Leste, there's Kampung Tugu in Jakarta where people still speak Portuguese, while in Timor-Leste their language Tetum is inspired by Portuguese language. 2. The Dutch traded Malacca for Bencoolen with the British, that's why their Malaccan holdings disappear and they expand more into Sumatra, because the agreement is that Britain get to keep all Malayan Peninsula and the Dutch all Sumatra.

(English) Yes, it is true that according to such history, we are independent with our own struggle, we are not given independence by other nations. It needs to be reminded again, to maintain stability/protect the entire Southeast Asian region so that this incident does not happen again and conduct business cooperation. we founded/unified Southeast Asian countries into one ASEAN organization. and this is where we unite under the ASEAN flag like the European Union.

Back then, we had a sort of complicated relationship with the Japanese Empire. Yeah, we know all about the forced workers and comfort women but they also arguably "freed" us from colonists. So what people did back then was making use of knowledge, skills, and infrastructures that Japan imparted while waiting for an opportune time to declare independence. The moment Japan surrendered is that right time. There's a funny thing about our fight back then. Most countries would probably have their heaviest fighting during WW2. We, on the other hand, didn't start fighting until after the war ended. It's also not as simple as fighting back a single faction as there are multiple parties vying for legitimacy. It's the perfect definition of a clusterf*ck.

the show only depicts about 10% of the history that Indonesia has.. especially the post-colonial part and the beginning of the transition to the transfer of power from the Netherlands to Japan and Indonesia..and there was a misunderstanding, at the time who actually gave independence support to Indonesia. gave the lure of independence to Indonesia but it was only a persuasive propaganda move by Japan to take the support of the Indonesian people to win the Greater Pacific War. In fact, it was the Indonesian people who fought for independence as stated in the Declaration of Indonesian Youth Unity which was established early before the Second World War (1928)and succeeded in declaring its independence on August 17, 1945..and emphasized again that Indonesia won independence not only by confrontation but also by many diplomatic efforts, such as "the Lingar Jati conference", "Renville Confrence","Reom Royen", and "the Round Table Conference in dutch"(final)...but any way thanks for this reaction..

That's because after the independence, Indonesian government forbid people to bring up the things about dutch/ Portuguese includes languages and use Indonesia language instead. 14:43 The original party was PDI (or Indonesian Democratic Party). In 1997, there was a dispute between two groups within the party. The original founder, Megawati, daughter of Sukarno (1st President), against someone affiliated with the dictator Soeharto. This someone win the right to lead PDI. Megawati then forms a new party, PDI-P, where the P stands for Perjuangan, which means "struggle/fight for our right", because the dispute earlier was orchestrated by the dictator to divide PDI power in parliament, which they (Megawati side) feel treated unjustly, hence, Perjuangan (the struggle) thing.
