Just check out "not just bikes" for a decent view on dutch bike culture. I am a dutch woman. So I have been on a bike (with my mom) since I was 0 years old. Parents teach their kids to cycle before they are physically capable to cycle. I have been riding my bike all my life....to school...to work...to shop...to hangout with friends. A bike gives a kid freedom and self-reliance from an early age. It shapes us into who we are. I think the dutch cycle culture is catching on abroad as well. Its a nice sustainable way into the future. It solves many problems foreign cities seem to have while...added bonus keeps you healthy and costs you nothing....you can even socially distance on a bike.

Nice to see another reaction to the city i live in. It's a very beautiful place to visit and has a lot of nature surrounding the city center, like forests, beautiful open fields and rivers, which are perfect for hiking, biking, swimming and lots of other outdoor activities.

Yes, I’m from The Netherlands and I ride my bike. I use the bike daily for all kind of purposes. Actually, most of the destinations are within 10-15 kilometres single way. I’m not wearing flashy Lycra pants and jerseys, I’m not wearing helmets or so, sitting upright, overviewing the the environment and enjoying life. By bike it takes 30-45 minutes, parking is never an issue. I have my daily exercises and this keeps me healthy and in shape. At least, that is what I think. Btw, I’m 74 years of age. Cycling plays a very important role in The Netherlands, kids of 4 years old cycle to schools, commuters cycle to work, grocery shopping is done by bike and it is great fun to ride your bike and to enjoy nature. Check the KZbin channel “ not just bikes” where an American guy shares his experiences living in The Netherlands and the insight he gained in the role of bikes in daily life, the Dutch society and especially the effects on city design and traffic safety. Thank you for your observations and comments, have a good life and may be we meet in The Netherlands, cheers Baer

There are 17 million inhabitants in The Netherlands and more than 22 million bikes. Most people indeed own more than 1 bike. One good quality (E-) bike for commuting as most employers provide secure bike parking; a (cargo-)bike for local use / shopping / transporting little kids; a racing- and/or mountain bike for leasure activities. Mostly students have also a 'crappy' one to get to the train station where they park that one there and at the destination station where they usually have another one parked there also. Utrecht for example has several underground parking garages with 33.000 parking spots around the central station alone. The biggest one has space for 12.500 bikes. And still the city council is looking for new locations to face the growing demand as is the case in the whole country of The Netherlands.

Old capitol of the Batavian tribe. the original city was located more upstream , after the revolt of 69 the city was moved to less defendable location .

Where do you get that info from? According to what i know of Nijmegen it was a Roman build city and the citizens back then were also primarily Roman.

@@Weda01 Neimwegen was a batavian city and long before the romans came they moved the city after the oprising in 68. nothing roman about it , where i dget th einformation simple historic facts , archives and every single history book written ,including the acount of the roman tacitus . Batavians where not roman they where an ancient dutch tribe one of the 3 major tribes that made up what is now the netherlands and belgium .

@@marcusfranconium3392 But the Batavians moved to what was then Roman territory only between 50BC and 20BC, before that time there were no Batavians living in that area. The predecessor of Nijmegen called Oppidum Batavorum was build between 10 BC and the beginning of the common era by the Romans which was later burned down by the Batavians during the Batavian revolt after which Ulpia Noviomagus was build by the orders of the Roman emperor Traianus.

@Weda01

@@marcusfranconium3392 It is not true that they always lived along the Rhine river before the Romans. They are known to have been a faction that originally belonged to and split up from the tribe of the Chatti who lived along the vicinity of the Weser river and the Chatti had their territory in what is now modern day Germany. It is also known that the people who lived in the Betuwe area before the Batavians came in called the Eburones were declared as outlaws by the Romans and were also annihilated by them around 53 or 52 BC upon which the area the Eburones originally occupied in todays Netherlands became free to be resettled. When the Eburones were annihalated the Batavians made an agreement with the Romans to settle the area from then on.

Yes, I think that is a very pretty city!! I think the people who live in Nijmegen own their own bikes. I think tourists from other countries rent bikes while there on vacation. Now, I don't know if other Dutchies visiting Nijmegen bring their own bikes with them on vacation or if they would just rent bikes while they are visiting. Can any Dutchies answer that, please?

We have bike carriers for the car, so we do bring our bikes along for trips, but not to the city of Utrecht, or city's in general. That's more for the rural places. When me and my family goes to Utrecht, we park at the outskirts and take the public transport to the center and then walk. A combination ticket for "park and ride" like we call it, is cheaper than a parking garage in the city center, if you stay longer than 2 hours that is. Nijmegen is smaller and more rural, I imagine people bringing their bikes with them on vacation in that region.

There's a fairly recent thing, where you can lease a bike (it's called swapfiets, an Anglo-Dutch concoction with fiets meaning bike), students especially seem to like those. And yeah, the tourists will be the ones wearing helmets...

Greeting from Nijmegen! Must sees not metioned: Kronenburgerpark, Ooijpolder, Veur-Lent(island in the river that used to be the other side of the river) and the old city hall. Amsterdam is for art lovers, Nijmegen is for history lovers.

Yes, biking is totally a Dutch & Danish thing. I'm from Belgium and even I never saw that kind of biking culture, our biking infrastructure is really lacking, although underground biking parks are something that's common in Western Europe

We make sure our bikes don't get stolen by having an old bike and a BRAND NEW LOCK. Chain your rear wheel to stuff, not your front wheel because that will be the only thing left when you come back.
