Yes, it’s the tradition to gather at the elder’s house. As in this case the granny. In granny’s generation it is normal to have big family. Let say 10 children. And that children have offsprings with an average of 3 each. So that’s sum up to be 51 people. And let say a third of that offsprings are married, so there are another 10 people. That 10 couples have and average of 1 kid each. All in all there will be 71 family members in ONE locale.

I’m not sure about everyone else but my grandparents will be so upset if we sleep at the hotels during Raya. Raya is like a festivals for us to finally meet each other, catch up with each other lives and just spend time together. It’s hard to meet your extended families if it’s not during the festivals, some will live in different states and even if some of your relatives stay in the same state as you are, it’s still hard to meet up because everyone got their lives going on and having their own schedule. That’s why I think it’s nice that in the Asian culture, all of us just cramped up in the same house during big festivals like Raya.

The 'movie' they were watching is not a real movie, but it features Jero the Cat, which appears in all of TNB's festival ads - Hari Raya, Chinese New Year, Deepavali etc. It's like a running gag. :) You have to watch all the festival ads in order to get Jero's own storyline! The text at the end of the ad translates roughly to, 'All the noise and commotion with your family is what makes Hari Raya meaningful and happy'. edited: Jero's story starts in the TNB Raya 2017 ad. :)

It's an annual tradition here in Malaysia, be it the Hari Raya (for the Muslims), Chinese New Year (for the Chinese), Diwali (for the Hindus), Hari Gawai, or Pesta Kaamatan (Sarawak & Sabah), or Chrismas (for the Christians), there will be an exodus of people 'balik kampung' or going back to their hometown to visit their parent/grandparent/the elderly whereby some do stay at hotels but mostly stayed at their parents/grandparents house. It's like an annual gathering for family dinner as well as for fostering closer family ties. Cousins knowing cousins, aunties, uncles, grandparents, etc. as to ensure families remain steadfast together. It's also kind of a humbling experience going back to your roots, where it all began. Sadly for the past year during this pandemic, mostly are unable to continue this tradition. This tradition continues with the open house tradition (please react to TNB Raya 2019 - Konvoi Epik Fantastik kzbin.info/www/bejne/jaPGk31oZ8ild6c ).

Its called Malaysian hospitality. We love to serve for our guest. In this case, Eid is considered the biggest festivity hence the elderly wont let any family members left out. However, i must say this advertisement kinda exegerated because with that size of family its quite imposible to fit everybody in, let alone considering the halal gap (privacy) among family members. These days, a lot of kampong houses offer homestay service within the radius of the owner's house. You can find alot of kampong homestay in Airbnb for short visit throughout the year. But Eid is the peak season, not just for homestay but hotels in nearby town as well. Malaysian still practice this culture till today because we believe in strong family bonding esp when u can only do it once a year unles if we're able to do family day vacation every 1 or 2 years. Note: sandals been used daily, shoes for casual/official outing only.

Raya also mean Family gathering. We usually gather with all siblings at the parent's house and usually stays longer than 1 day. Sometime for 2-3 days before we switch home to our mother in law's house (for those who married...we usually have alternate stay). Raya eve will be the busiest for everybody when we'll prepare our festivity's traditional menu. Children will be busy with all their cousins and siblings playing sparks and fireworks. Lots of activities and chit chatting.

For malay people, during raya all children will return to their hometown and gathered at their parents house.. imagine if there are 6 or 7 siblings, together with their spouses and children, it can be 50 over people in one house! So this tv commercial is the real picture of normal scenario of a big malay family during raya. Not too much to say, in malay culture, it can be considered rude if you stay in hotel instead! Normally a traditional malay house has spacious living hall and kitchen and if it not enough, the ground level can be used. Although the house was built small at the beginning, overtime, the house will be extended to accommodate more familiy members and funded by all grown children. So enough space for everybody. In term of privacy, for malay people, during family event, we are not really into individual privacy, it is okay for us to share common space etc.

For the Malaysian Malays (one of the many natives in Malaysia), family bond is super important, hence everybody in the family will gather at our elders' home during Hari Raya (Eid). At least for 1 or 2 days before going back to city life.

It depends on the location and size of the house. Rumah kampung (village houses - the traditional wooden houses) are mostly on big lot or the houses are quite big. My grandma's house have spacious living and dining area and when my family, my aunties' and uncles' families all go there, most of us would just sleep all over the living room and dining area lol

This is why we always say Raya festivals in the past were much better. Before television came into our lives in 1963, most of us lived in houses on stilts in the village where is it possible to share everything that we have. Once we desire to have houses like the westerners, to accommodate overnight guests become not feasible. That is why everyone love to return to the villages during the Raya festival not only to have close interaction with relatives but the whole village. Maybe we can do it again once we ascended to the 4D where we can create holographic houses, but it can never be the same like in the 50s and the 60s.

Its a tradition for siblings to balik kampung (travel back home) for festivals like Hari Raya or Chinese New year. Its a mess but we like it because its just once or twice a year. We do have hotels everywhere but we prefer cramping everybody in the house. Usually village houses are very big. Sometimes we also brought camping tents and set it up in the lawn. We also do family gathering on other time usually done in a resort or homestays.

We do wear sandals and it is tradition for families/relatives to stay over at their family members' house during the festivities. The Jero cat movie is a continuous gag movie in all TNB's funny raya ads. The translation for the quote (I think so): Roistering with family, Invites happiness in Hari Raya. Please react to the TNB: Epik konvoi fantastik. This is also a Raya tradition that we used to do before the pandemic hits.

There's a new culture/ practice among younger generation now in which the extended families would stay at hotels during this time but more often than not, there would be a backlash especially the social commentaries on social media. This is expected from a culture/ people which does not have the perfect equivalent of the word 'privacy' in our language...

For my family staying at my paternal grandparents' house would be a bit hectic, as my father hav 8 siblings, 9 including him..... and they all have 3 children in average.... So we used to lay mattresses in the living room and dining room... but when my aunt bought a house nearby half of us will go and sleep at her house, but only to sleep, the whole day would be spent at my grandparents' if we don't go anywhere to visit other relatives...it also helps when not all my father's siblings came at the same time, as it may be time for they to go back to their in-law's that year (we usually alternate) ....and 2 of my uncles lived overseas at that time..... Nowadays as the family grew we sleep at homestays/hotels (only sleep) but still spend the whole day at my aunt's as my grandparents have passed away...and they erect a tent now in the yard....

It's more like a tradition, as Eid is meant for everyone to get together and ask for forgiveness from eachother.. "Eid Fitr" literally means getting back to your true self, your roots..as such "Balik Raya" or going back to your hometown is a norm where we get together with different generations of the family. It's more like Thanksgiving instead of Christmas, where we have lots of food and catch up with eachother.

"Riuh-rendah bersama keluarga mengundang seri di aHari Raya. SALAM AIDILFITRI" roughly translating: The havoc of a damily gathering brings out the joy of the festivity. HAPPY AIDILFITRI. By the way, Arif is the name of the boy. That elderly lady is his grandmother. So, that is the centre family for others to come and visit. I am guessing its the lady's children and their families. Oldeer generation may have ten or more children, thus a huge family. The gentleman in the Volkwagon is the lady's sibling paying a visit. Can uyou imagine had that man brought along his family lineage? 🤭 Now, that would require a hotel or a hall for festival gathering! The "movie" is TNB's previous year's Hari Raya ad featuring Jero, the cat.

It's a tradition that the children and grandchildren to gather during Raya for 2 or 3 days. No matter how cramped, there's always space for everybody. After all we only do this once a year. It's a matter of making the elders happy that we care for them and come back and spend the festivities with them. Otherwise they will be lonely and spend it only the two of them. The first boy is one of the grandchild who happens to live with grandma. As a youngster they hate their privacy being encroached by his young brats cousins who comes from the city and are snobbish 😄. But after time, it is not that bad at all! 😄. Staying away at a hotel is a NO NO!

I dunno, one would always have that rich grandpa (your grandma siblings) or uncle just like the last bit. We always need to go to his house for Raya or he would get really offended and ask to many question why we didn't if we met him outside the festivities. I don't mind cuz he gives the best duit raya and the selections of Raya food.

During Raya, most of the Malay Muslims will go back to their hometown, and usually the hotels will be fully booked, including flight and bus tickets and back then in the 90's, Kuala Lumpur will be more relax during Hari Raya. Well this advert really show the reality during Hari Raya, we do celebrate it with gathering and food. The tv show is not a real movie, but if you guys follow this Hari Raya advert by TNB, Jero The Cat will be part of character in every advert. During raya we usually gather inside the house because the weather can be tricky. One time hot and all of the sudden heavy rain. Some people gather at the community hall, here we call it open house. Hari Raya is where you can gain weight because the whole month of Syawal will be full with open house invitation.

You might think it's miserable but i really miss this kind of gathering so much. A gathering like this is a must at least once a year either it's chinese new year or raya or deepavali. There are hotels everywhere but what's the point of gathering when we don't gather together right? 😂

Its a tradition for Malaysian to gather at their parents house during the major festivals....so the ads is like exaggerating all the chaos and stress involve when a lot of people gather at the same house. its an asian thing for these big family gathering. btw my parents would kill me if i dont spend the night/the week at their house during the festive season. its the good times w family which we will remember despite the inconvenience and loss of privacy. bcz family is everything ..and in Malaysia our house is "open" means everyone is invited to drop by for a visit even strangers are welcomed... in case you are in malaysia, feel free to visit ny house OK!

The number of people gathered in the advert (at one time) is an exaggeration I think, though it is quite common for families to go the elders for a visit during the Eid festival. Nowadays, we have smaller families and an average Malaysian family will have 2-4 children. Because of heat and humidity, yes, we prefer to use sandals when we visit families, and shoes are usually worn for "formal" occasions eg work, formal dining, weddings. We still prefer to rough it out at granny's place, and sometimes we take turns visiting our in laws to make room for everyone. Of course because of covid, the last 2 years have been very different for most families :(

EID MUBARAK I don't know how to translate *seri* so i'm gonna tell you what it means. if berseri mean glow so seri mean bright or something like that but in the sentence it a metaphor for happy. i'm not really good at explainning so i hope you guys get it.😅

As for my maternal grandparents side its much more easier, because they have only 3 children, and my eldest uncle lives in singapore (no long raya holidays) so he n his family rarely went back to my grandparent's to celebrate hari raya on the day itself... except recently ..... Now my singaporean cousins came down for hari raya on alternate year... Stayed in another uncle's house.... and in the coming years when this cocid is not around they will be staying at their own house here in melaka as my couwins are planning on building a house....
