In Australia we get a lot of TV programming from the US and we make a number of shows ourselves, but a significant portion of stuff televised here is from the UK, so we get a lot of exposure to things like the British countryside, history and culture. A lot of people in Australia still feel British and the Queen is still our head of state. A lot of people have only been here for only a few generations, so we are not that far removed, despite the distance. There are also a crazy number of people here who follow teams playing in the English Premier League.

In Edinburgh there is the Olde side and the new side. So the new side has some newer buildings but the good thing about the UK is in many places new buildings need to be built in the same architecture as the old ones and doesn't look like an eyesore and out of place.

my favourite thing about living in the u.k is the sheer amount of history, from the smallest village to the big cities and everywhere in between has it - on my doorstep i have everything from roman amphitheatres, castles, religious sites.. the list goes on and on and i dont think enough people here appreciate it enough but thats probably because they are so used to it

I live 20 minutes south of Oxford right in the heart of England, it's half an hour to London by train, by car it's an hour to Stonehenge, an hour to the Jurassic coast, an hour to Wales, twenty minutes to the Cotswolds, and close to many other places! I've travelled to lands end, the most south western point of Britain, to the most northern point in Scotland! From where I live both can be reached by car, about five hours to lands end, and seven to the northern tip of Scotland! There are few places in the world where there's such a variety in landscape, in such a short distance. If you only visit one city in the UK, go to York, the city which AVE new York it's name. Dublin (yes I know that's in Ireland), Edinburgh, and Bath come close! And for scenery, it's a toss up between Pembrokeshire in Wales, the Highlands of Scotland, and the Cotswolds in England.

Sadly what a lot of people from other countries don't realise is the reason London and other uk cities are a mix of modern and old is ww2 and 50, 60s modernization of places that were deemed slums, so much of our beautiful buildings were destroyed during the war due to the blitz and torn down over the following years before a lot became protected for historical significance.

There is so much more! Snowdon is is 1,000 metres, not 10,000 metres! The Jurassic Coast also contains Cretaceous rocks ( the next geological period), such as the Chalk. It is a World Heritage site because it is where fossils - abundant in the Jurassic rocks - were first really understood. There are literally thousands of castles all over the UK, and many stately homes. Many of our nobles still live in them; others are run by English Heritage or the National Trust. Many have running water, etc. But the biggest snag about owning a castle is that the planning rules are very strict. You are mostly definitely not allowed to do what you want with them. But there is so much to enjoy. In the higher and wilder areas of England and Wales you have the Right to Roam; in Scotland there is no law of trespass at all; but a strange piece of our law means that over old pathways you often have Right of Way. These Rights of Way are marked on maps, so you can walk all over our landscape by right, in areas that are often gorgeous. Many of our churches date back to 1100, 1200, 1300, 1400, and a church near me is mostly built in 780. ( Not 1780!)

Most of the Harry Potter films were not filmed in Edinburgh it just happens to be where JKR is from. There are some small tours etc for the die hard fans but over all its not hyped. Northern Island had capitalized more on the sucess of GOT as it was almost entirely filmed there. Even the Queen when there saw the throne but did not sit in it.

To answer your comment - there are strict planning laws in UK where you have to seek permission even to change a window frame.! As regards "tearing a building down" as you suggest, if it's a listed building it would be illegal, even for the local authority to give such permission. Such an act would most likely end up in prison alongside murderers and rapists.!!

@@garymcatear822 The UK is younger than the USA. The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland came into being in 1801, which was changed to The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in 1922, following the creation of the Irish Free State (now the Republic of Ireland). The USA came into being in 1776 (the original 13 colonies - its size has increased massively since). If you're thinking of the Kingdom of Great Britain, it's 69 years older than the USA - established in 1707 following the Acts of Union between England (including Wales) and Scotland. Of course, England and Scotland, as separate entities, are even older than that. The political unification of England was in 953 under Æthelstan, Scotland in 843 under Kenneth MacAlpin, so several centuries is correct in this case (8 and 9 respectively). If you're talking about people living in Britain and Ireland, yes, about 12,000 years. However, people have been living in North America for about 11,500 years.

@@jinxvrs I agree with everything you said in your comment, i am talking about the original inhabitants of the British isles who have been there since the end of the last ice age. A lot was filmed in Glasgow, the graveyard scenes were filmed in Glasgow necropolis where all renouned Glaswegians are laid to rest, not for ordinary Glaswegians. I am actually sick and tired of all the Hollywood movie crews in Glasgow because they close off roads and it takes 20-30 minutes longer to get to were your trying to get too. One day i was trying to get through Glasgow city center and encountered one film crew making the flash movie so i got diverted, the diversion took me onto another street where i encountered another movie set...this time it was the new Indianna Jones movie so i got redirected again only to bump into yet another film crew which were filming Batman. You'd think 'cool all these hollywood movies being filmed here, but no it was a pain in the arse mate, i ended up an hour late for work because of friggin Hollywood.

"Australia not in the West"💀 The Western world is a cultural/racial/historical term not a geographical term.... Basically this term was first used by the ancient Greeks to distinguish themselves from the " eastern" civilization to their well DUH East (babylon, Mesopotamia, Egypt, Assyria, persia...) And as we all know Greek being one of the oldest civilization and arguably the most influential especially on Europe the term Western world was extended by the Romans to most of Europe then it was used by all the continent in the Renaissance - 1500s , And ofc we all know that Europe colonized 90% of the world but the countries that were literally built BY some European country (were most influenced) were : American continents (north, south, middle, + the Carribean) & ocesnia (Australia + new Zealand & other islands) those were all formed by some European country and that's their native languages today ... Basically the Western world : - Europe - Oceania - The AMERICAS (north, south, Carribean) These 3 continent are tied by history religion language and actually race/ethnicity as lot of those continents have origins from Europe (yes latino isn't a race not ethnicity u can be anything latino like mestizos (half European half native) or Amerindian (pure native) or Hispanic (pure Spanish) or afro-latino.... So yuh that was that, hope u understand
