When it comes to culture in South Africa. Most Americans would fit like a hand in glove, since we have western styles and our consumerism behaviors. But when it comes to culture in depth and particular to rituals, traditions and customs, they may experience some difficulties since their not familiar with who the people are on a day to day living.

In South Africa you get virtually anything delivered from furniture to groceries ( within an hour, with a personal shopper) to medication, you can even get people to come to your home or office to service your vehicle, as far as food is concerned, yiu csn get food from any country ( we even have philly cheese steaks and Mexican food from real Mexicans or Argentinian food to Indian to Asian) and even better fish and chips than the UK, we also have McDonald's, Burger King, Popeyes, KFC (apparently better than the US version) Dominos and Pizza Hut, Wimpy (from the UK) among our local fast food places, also in most supermarkets you get American, UK and Korean aisles with like Hersheys and Reeces or Buldak etc.

I've been following your channel for a few months. Your comments and reactions on this video are among the best I've seen. Your objectivity is impressive. It's great that you noticed the video's tired narrative about Africa. Many African youth, instead of waiting for employment, are embracing creative entrepreneurship. Those planning to migrate to Africa should prepare and be creative, as you pointed out. As patriotic Pan-Africans, we aim for a united Africa in the future, but we shouldn't view the entire continent as one country. Not all African countries have poor infrastructure or amenities like having no street names and addresses. Africa is also exposed to a lot of western culture especially American and there are a lot of western companies, brands, airlines, media, restaurants, etc. I've seen many videos of African-Americans happily settling in South Africa.

For Americans South Africa is your best bet, we have the best of both worlds. Our cities are westernized and rural areas are beautiful and unspoiled. The mistake visitors make is they come for 2 weeks. That's not enough time to see our diverse country. So when you guys come take at least a month.

None of these factors are the reasons why African Americans are going back, no. They can't establish anything in Africa with the type of money they earn back in America. I mean, I've seen White Folks, Chinese and even Indians who came here and never go back - they establish factories or farms or work in the hospitality or mining industries. There's one thing you should know: competition here is low compared to america, and there are alot of things not yet done in Africa, so if you introduce such business ideas here, you would be the first. This should be the focus of African Americans coming to Africa! If there's no Walmart, set up one, if delivery is bad, create a better delivery company etc...

I don't know but you have to really think outside the box Mr. & Mrs. Demouchet. I imagine Americans could bring American cuisine & American sports culture in Africa. Maybe a mini 3-on-3 basketball league or something that's not in Africa. If there's no delivery industry, maybe introduce that considering all the difficulties delivery drivers could encounter... Maybe some black Americans come to Africa thinking Wakanda & black Utopias... simply a test of reading the room at times. Work with what's there rather than expecting things.

I, as a white Dutch woman, have lived in Senegal. I have met black Americans who wanted to set up a life there, thinking it would be easier. But they where not treated as equal, they are seen as "rich" Americans first by the locals. They got lonely and miserable, turned out they had better conversations with me and my then white boyfriend then with Africans. The culture difference is huge, the difference in education and overall knowledge is enormous. The best contacts you will have is with other immigrants from Europe, mostly white. And you will experience racism at a whole new level being seen as not black but as white from the inside. Color is a strange thing that does strange things to people no matter their own color... They all went back...

@@DeDaanste South Africa is not the only Southern African country. It's actually the most difficult to be accepted. They make friends along tribal lines, mostly. But, there other countries that are slightly more accepting and just as modern as South Africa. Zim. Botswana. Namibia. I get what they're wanting though. To be embraced fully. They can only find that in the villages. Not the cities. In the cities, it takes one generation. They won't be included. But their kids will.

You just don't know how and if you get the right native to help you they will show you how. For example food and good deliveries, in Uganda they have Jumia and a few other sites. when it comes to food, there is plenty of foods to choose from.

I think Americans can start businesses in Africa that makes lives easiers for Americans coming into Africa. Like a Directorate of Convenience for Americans in Africa. And there is a WHOLE lot in that. Consulting, transportation, schools for children, office spaces, business space options, housing options, places to socialise in, places of worship -- all that is familiar or relatable to Americans that will make them feel more at home in Africa. If every country in Africa has at least an honest American who is wiiling, already settled, and understands from experience all that a new American-African needs to settle in without feeling so lost, more people will be able to move and settle with little or no problems.

In my opinion, there are 54 African countries each with there own cultures, economies, languages and infrastructures. I agree with the planning aspect of it because unemployment is prevalent in most countries. However culture wise it varies: most Southern African countries are westernised and English an the official language in those countries. Most people with cable or Dstv are aware of who Steve Harvey is. Plus you’ll find various restaurants with different cuisines as well as fast food outlets like KFC and McDonalds. In my opinion South Africa is the most advanced in terms of infrastructure in my opinion and facilities, however the country has a high crime rate.

Thank you both for sharing this. I watch the many YT videos with people posting about how much they regret moving to Africa and I feel depressed. I'm an African and I currently live in the US. I didn't move here blindly. I got a green card in 2017 but didn't move here until 2019 after I secured a job. Don't move any where without doing due diligence and knowing how you will support yourself. I lived in about 15 African countries before moving to the US. These are countries that I lived in for at least 6 months. I didn't like all of them. There were some that were expensive than others. Others that were more welcoming than others. But my judgement of one didn't influence my judgement of all of them. There are African countries like Uganda that I found really affordable. Ghana was expensive for me, and I don't think I would pick Ghana to move to. But I still enjoyed my time there and encourage friends who are looking to go there for visiting or for work. Don't let your experience in one African country dictate your perspective of the whole continent. I have hard a time adjusting to life in the US. I have attributed this to moving here a little later in life, rather than to the US being a bad place. But am taking the knowledge I have accumulated here to go back and start a business for myself. Africa has different opportunities from the West. And there are different challenges as well. Do you due diligence before making the decision to move.

This video is a must for any American "willing" to move to Africa... I know a few Americans that moved to South Africa and didn't have the greatest of experiences... namely Keith Murray and Mos Def... however, with Keith, it had to do with the company you keep... If you come to South Africa and decide to hang with the guys from the "hood"... There's a level of expectation they will impose upon you... and if the expectation is not met... Things can turn ugly for you... I believe this is true for anyone moving into unfamiliar territory... It makes sense for you to get to know the locals and learn about the history and all... But, always remember that you are coming with the dollars and vultures will start 🔵 around and you become an easy prey... Have a purpose for you move and stick to your plan...which is to have the best time of your life in Africa, in a responsible manner... All the best to you my brothers and sisters...

I would like to highlight two things that many don't understand 1. Western doesn't mean modern. You must not be western to be modern. Many countries in Africa are now developing in line with their cultural values and the global culture. I pity the Africans who are proud of how western they are 2. South Africa is the african country that is most influenced by the West and it has caused more harm that good, eg harmful ideologies and racism (Xenophobia)
@IsobelMittoninAfrica
@IsobelMittoninAfrica Жыл бұрын
All the Southern African countries have developed according to their cultural values. Including SA. Our cultures are on paper. From our ancestors to law. 2. The whole of Southern Africa is xenophobic. They're just not violent about it. But, they don't like foreigners, unless you're touring. I know. I'm in them frequently. THEY DON'T LKKE FOREIGNERS. ALL OF THEM!!!! Visit and leave. The longer you stay, the more you will understand that. They may not physically violate you, but they will psychologically, mentally and socially shut you out. Nigerians for instance are very quiet in Zim and Bots. Hardly seen on the streets. Because those 2 countries don't play that. There was a time one of those countries' military used to round up foreigners in the middle of the night and dump them in a neighboring country. With only what those surprised foreigners could get out in the 30 minutes given to them.

Id advice against west african countries if your looking for an easier modern life, their infrastructure isn't the best. If your all for culture then go for it. here in Kenya I'd say you can get most things delivered easily if you have the contact of a bike rider around your area to pick up stuff for you..its different from USA but inherently the same. We do have many choices for furniture and products but the cost goes up for some of the better-quality stuff even for different cuisines..available but expensive tho if ur using American dollars probably not that expensive.

This one time I was riding in a car with an this older gentlemen of my ethnicity and all of the sudden he rolled down the window and started yelling at and chastising these young men who were soldiers. They had AK-47s and a technical mounted on the back of their truck and he was not fazed even for a moment yelling at them staying to them to stay in their lane like they were young children misbehaving. The only possibly positive thing about films like this is they confirm a need to do your due diligence, and to take it - very - serious. Both internally (what are your must-have needs and wants?) and externally (what is the status of the things important to you about a country's/region's/city's government, infrastructure, crime rate, employment/entrepreneurial opportunities, civil rights, etc?).

Food: You shouldn't come to Nigeria and hoping to see alot of non Nigerian food here, because Nigeria has a lot of varieties of local dishes that no one really cares about Western dishes, you can find Chinese, Indian and some other African countries dishes in Nigeria because Nigeria has good population of certain groups outside of Africa and within Africa. in conclusion, Nigeria is one of if not the least Westernized country in Africa from foods, music, cloths totally different from other African countries. if you need something close to the Western culture then South Africa and Kenya will be the better option etc 2. Supermarkets: There are a lot of supermarkets/small stores in Nigeria but mostly in the popular states like Lagos, Abuja, Porthacourt etc 3. There are so many airlines in Nigeria, especially if you live in Lagos or Abuja there are options to go to any of the 36 states from this 2 places 4. Most people when they come to west Africa they go to Ghana but Nigeria is more developed than Ghana, Ghana on the other hand have better Electricity and better Security than Nigeria but in terms of development, Nigeria is more developed.

There's a white American girl who came for South Africa in the Tiktok streets and soon regretted it. I saw it on KZbin with the replies. It's crazy how one sided someone can be having only heared one side and have all the confidence she and many others have... but hey it is what it is. Hopefully she learned something and to do research before blasting out misinformation

In france you are looked different because there is no so many black people but you will stand out as an american not a black or a african , i think a white american willl have more in comun to you than an african , in european eyes anyway . Its only in the microcosm of Usa the vision is very différent and you can see it how white treat you but also how you diferentiate yourself , but for us your "personality as affro-american " is very american like we have see in series or movies since very young . I can remember cosby show , roots , all the eddy murphy movies etc ...

Truth is, if you want to live as an American in Africa, it's might not work out well, unless you create your own mini American ecosystem. The best way to move to Africa is to research and tour which of the countries and cities whose culture/lifestyle you're most comfortable and interested in, then integrate. Willingness to change/adapt to a certain degree is a recipe for successful transplanting. You have to look at the fashion and food. Draw a chart of your favourite countries and cities in Africa. Do you like the food? Do you find the hustle culture exciting or stressful? Do you like the fashion? Do they have the kind of environment and educational system you want for children's growth? If not, is the place conducive for creating an ecosystem of education and growth for your children? How many Americans are there that you can compare notes with? Are the natives genuinely helpful and friendly to returnee natives? (Black Americans are Native Africans too, in my opinion) Doing an ancestry DNA to give you a general idea of where you might be from in Africa might also help, but I will say wherever in Africa you feel most at home, most relaxed and comfortable, that pulls at your heartstrings in a good way is most likely where you should move to. A tour of the continent will be helpfull. Which means it might take you at least a year to decide where in Africa you wish to call home.

@@Cowboys1998 so one, you lived in a part of Lagos, not even the whole of Lagos you can speak about. there are places in Lagos with 24/7 electricity and there are also places less developed, same thing in Kenya and South Africa. If you live in kibera in Kenya or Alexandra, Gauteng in South Africa for instance, it would be a whole different experience with the developed parts of both countries. Secondly, Lagos is not the whole of Nigeria, There are places in Nigeria with far better roads than Lagos like Abuja, Port Harcourt, Uyo etc. Same with other parts of West Africa Senegal, Cote d'Ivoire has good infrastructure and good roads. You cannot use an isolated area you stayed in a city to judge a whole country. Even people that have lived in Nigeria for 20yrs don't know 10% about the country. Nigeria is very big and diverse in culture and development

They have, sadly, a sentimental, romanticised idea of "Africa," many others do. People make the mistake of thinking "Africa" is a country. If one's ancestors were plucked and sold, say from Liberia, go to Liberia if you need to "go back" to "Africa" do go to say South Africa or Eswatini. You will not find anything that resonates. Secondly, you are "American"
