In this video, we react to Why Europeans Hate the Taste of American Chocolate! While I had heard people from the UK and Europe say they didn't like American chocolate, "tasting like ear wax" was a new one. 😂
It turns out the big differences between mainstream American and European chocolate come down to a very specific ingredient-and even the war played a role in shaping the taste. This was such an interesting look at why a lot of Europeans aren’t fans of our chocolate, and honestly, it makes a lot of sense. We both prefer Cadbury over Hershey’s, so we totally get it! Do you think our chocolate tastes like vomit??
Thanks for watching! If you enjoyed this Why Europeans Hate the Taste of American Chocolate reaction, be sure to give the video a thumbs up, drop a comment, and don’t forget to subscribe as we keep exploring all things UK, Ireland, and beyond!

Milton Hershey: "I need to make the milk stay fresh longer for processing." Europe: "here, try pasteurising, a.k.a. heating up the milk to kill of microbes that make the milk go bad. we use this for decades." Hershey:"No thank you, I will come up with a new process that partially sours the milk and make the chocolat taste like vomit. The comsumer does not care as long it is the cheapest product on the shelf."

And with sterilization your milk will last for months. Military usually uses chocolate made with sterilized milk for that reason. You could keep a chocolate bar throughout a whole military campaign and still have as an amazing reserve source of energy on you at all times.

@@db44-t6b To be fair though, Swedish military chocolate doesn't have milk at all in it and I ate a 45 year old packet when I did my service, it still tasted fine. It was pretty sweet though since they replaced the milk with higher sugar content, but as a soldier in the field, that is more energy for the same amount of chocolate. So there are better solutions to that problem, as a soldier in the field you aren't super picky if it is extra sweet or milk chocolate anyways and the high sugar chocolate have the advantage that it gets less squishy if it gets hot. Hershey already had his product and just sold it as it was to soldiers too, it wasn't like he did research for the perfect field ration or anything. I can't say I think it is good myself since it have a weird off taste, but it is better then nothing.

I worked as a chemist for Rhone-Poulenc in Paris in the 1990s and I can confirm that butyric acid is comfortably THE most disgusting chemical I have ever smelt. I used to pour roughly 10 mL into my reactor in a brand new industrial fume cupboard and it used to stink out the library through four sets of fire doors. I used to catch the RER into the city in the evening and catch the metro at Austerlitz. There would be people with their faces pressed up against the glass doors due to the rush hour crowding but I had a three foot exclusion zone around me owing to the smell! Once home I used to spend two hours in the shower scrubbing like mad. Imagine the smell of rancid butter but multiply it a million fold.
@RustyDust101
@RustyDust101 4 күн бұрын
Had a single semester of chemistry at university. Oh boy, the public transport exclusion zone is real. If you work in a lab with 20 more students, all in their anorganic analysis studies, where you regularly need butyric acid, your nose shuts down after an hour or so out of pure self-preservation. But the headaches you get after you start getting fresh air again are off the charts.

For me in the UK, it's not just the taste, it's the texture - Hersheys is waxy, too resistant to melting, and needs chewing, whereas Euro/UK chocolate basically just melts in your mouth. This means that where Euro/UK chocolate makers put in a texture (Flake, Aero etc) you know that's what they meant! btw we do get Hershey brand chocolate in the UK, and I totally hate it! I mean, totally despise it! It's foul, foul stuff...

Military chocolate tend to have a far harder texture though and it is way more resistant to heat. You don't want your chocolate bar to become goo in your backpack. Not that Hershey's originally was a military chocolate of course. I admit the first tine I tried a Hershey's bar I thought I got one that had gone bad, it do taste like a far too old European chocolate. I wouldn't go as far as foul, but it certainly taste weird.

It is not just Europeans. I am Australian, and think that American chocolate tastes like vommit. Hershey's definitely destroyed the reputation of American chocolate. Hershey's milk problem was that his chocolate factory was in a different state to where the milk was produced. In Europe and Australia the chocolate is made where the milk is produced, so it is fresher, and there is less spoilage problems.
@raycardy4843
@raycardy4843 5 күн бұрын
Yes! Hershey's was established long before refridgeration was common, and the milk-producing farms were hundreds of miles from the factories - so they did this to make the milk survive the long road journeys - in Europe, the distances are way shorter, so the milk used was totally fresh!
@artistjoh
@artistjoh 5 күн бұрын
@ Distances are long in Australia as well, but Cadbury chose to build its chocolate factory in a remote rural region to be close to the milk supply. So Australian Cadbury's always had the freshest milk. It is located on the island of Tasmania. Nestle's, on the other hand chose to locate in Melbourne. While it is much closer to milk supplies than Hershey's, it's milk supply was still not quite as fresh as Cadbury's, and as a result, Australian Nestle's has never been as good as Australian Cadbury's, whereas in Europe, Nestle's chocolate is better. The freshness of the milk is a huge deal in chocolate making. Hershey made a conscious decision to locate his factory far from his milk supplies. I find it utterly perplexing why he did this. I suspect it was mostly because he did not want to live in Minnesota, and that was more important to him than the taste of his chocolate. It is possible, I suppose, that he thought he could one day find a preservative that did not ruin his chocolate, but could never solve that problem, and without plentiful supplies of chocolate from elsewhere, Americans didn't realise that chocolate could taste so much better, so it still sold in American stores, so he didn't care. The silly thing is that while traditional Hersheys does not sell well overseas, they discovered that changing the chocolate recipe for sales in other countries, they could sell Hershey's elsewhere. It means that people in Europe and Australia can now buy Hershey's that tastes way better than the American version, but because of its reputation from the past vommit taste, most people are unwilling to taste test the newer non-vommit versions. Vommit-taste is not a taste anyone wants to risk putting in their mouth. Americans usually don't understand how bad a reputation American chocolate has in the rest of the world, and it is simply because of Hershey not wanting to go to Minnesota.

I put the video up a few weeks ago of Cadbury Dairy Milk adverts by the way, that I mentioned making. Its specifically Cadbury Dairy Milk ads, as those videos have a different feel to the ads they make for other Cadbury products. There is some real music in there, as Cadbury always do that in their "fun" adverts, but they got a thumbs up to use (theres 1 song not allowed in Russia, but that's common). Plus theres tons of reactions to the full versions of the other songs on here "Fun and Wholesome UK Cadbury Dairy Milk Advert compilation"

My chemistry teacher once past around a bottle of butyric acid that she told us to smell and it smelled like concentrated vomit. In Sweden we call it Smörsyra which translates to Butter acid. My cousin bought a bag of Hersheys kisses when we visited the US in 2023 and we each had one and threw the rest away. I'm very surprised americans can't taste the vomit because it was stronger then I thought it would be.

They were tiny little bite size individually wrapped bars of chocolate and they were put in a basket at the reception desk. I had one and had to spit it out because of the vomit taste. A massive amount is placebo from hearing others say it. It has changed by a very minor amount today. But to really show how easy it is to happen, people were complaining about this quite some time ago back when my uncle was working at cadburys and had been doing for decades - and at that point, it really hadn't changed at all yet. And there were still countless people talking about how bad it was constantly, he used to think it was pretty funny. Today it has changed, but the flavour change is minor for the most part and a slight texture change. But people get themselves so worked up online and talking to others that they taste a huge difference when they try it.

At my job in the UK, when colleagues go on holiday abroad, they always bring back sweets/candy or biscuits/cookies from the place they visited to share with colleagues at coffee break. Usually the stuff is eaten up really quickly, you gotta get to coffee break early if you want some before it's all gone. But when a colleague visited the US last year and brought back some Hershey chocolate, that stuff sat there for weeks and weeks. After each taking a small piece to try, nobody went back for more. I tried it too, but one try was enough! Sorry but it is pretty unpleasant (and I'll eat almost anything!).

Yes, the real milk makes a big difference too! As Cadbury's have always advertised (and as shown on the 'Dairy Milk' Chocolate Bar wrapper) - _"A GLASS and a HALF in EVERY bar"._ The phrase was originally used to explain the amount of milk in every 'half-pound' chocolate bar. The iconic 'Glass and a Half' symbol (image) was initially created in 1928, reflecting the amount of milk used in Cadbury's chocolate recipe. The symbol and phrase _“there's a glass and a half in everyone”_ is now globally recognised, and was to associate the chocolate brand with the 'friendly connotations of kindness and giving'. Although, back in 2010 they 'dropped' the slogan to meet EU directives and changed the packaging to say _"The equivalent of 426ml of fresh liquid milk in every 227g of milk chocolate",_ but kept the picture of the 'Glass & Half of Milk being 'poured out'. Later, UK Trading Standards said it had NO objections to the old phrase, and that Cadbury could continue using it... But by then they had re-adjusted all their wrappers so kept it 'as is'!

When I confirmed to relatives in the US I am able to go and visit them after them asking me if I could, the kids in the family asked me if I could bring them some English chocolate and some sweets they really liked when they visited me, I guess the first kid to ask me told the rest and they all asked If I would bring them some, I don't mind, I did plan to take some gifts and I would rather they consumed British chocolate rather than US poisened candy. When I was first in the US I tried the chocolate and it does taste like vomit I don't know about ear wax though, I have never tasted ear wax! We get Hershey chocolate products over here but it is made here and tastes much better! There seems to be some confusion in the US about what chocolate is made from, it is made from the Cacoa (pronounced Ca Cow) bean and so is cocoa, cocoa is a chocolate flavoured powdered product which is used to make a hot drink and is also made from Cacoa. Chocolate is made from Cacoa butter fat and milk. I have seen other videos where the US narrator claimed that chocolate is made from cocoa beans which came from cocoa plants. The cacoa beans come from the cacoa tree. Maybe the US actually makes it chocolate from cocoa powder and that's why it tastes so bad! LOL

I’ve definitely noticed it in other American chocolate, when I first visited the US it was just after Halloween 20 years ago and a friend kindly gave me a bag of chocolates - which included things we have over here like Maltesers etc as well as a few other things; when I was eating them I thought it had gone off, but it hadn’t. I realised that’s just what American chocolate generally tastes like - it’s similar to our cheap advent calendar chocolate but as if it’s gone bad. There are American ‘candy bars’ I do like though (Three Musketeers which is like our Milky Way, quite like Butterfingers and a Babe Ruth I don’t mind Hersheys Kisses, the bars are a bit much - my other half is American and she has a fondness for Hersheys. You should have tried the chocolate here in Ireland (and the UK) in the 90s and 2000s. At some point, everything in the world was ruined by corporate greed. Inflation, shrinkflation, and enshittification. Everything got worse over time, everything is smaller, and everything costs more. Good products disappeared from shelves, and the ones that remained have lowered in quality. Our chocolate still tastes good though. I wish I could go back to the 90s again and eat everything I loved back then.

I can't comment on US, but Europe in general has an historical reputation for its chocolate. And it's more than just a coincidence - there are distinct reasons why this is the case. Foreign UTubers often bang on about European weather - well here's the spin off. Ideal cattle pasture needs regular supply of rain, and FINE rain, not tropical downpours. The soil is another determining factor. Even if we examine the countries within Europe itself, we can clearly see how the factors above determine the quality of chocolate from country to country.!! Too hot or too cold are not idealic conditions for dairy farming, plus reliable rainfall and soil with high nutrients. You can taste the difference immediately with other foods such as youghout and cheese.

In my local Spar in Ireland, I noticed that they had a Hershey's bar so I bought one to see if it tasted as disgusting as I remembered: It actually didn't, it was quite nice !! It was manufactured in Malaysia, though, with different ingredients, so that may have been the reason !! Also, butyric acid isn't ADDED to the ingredients: it's created by a chemical reaction caused by the lipolysis method, which is why it doesn't have to be added to the ingredients list. Since we don't use that method, we don't get that reaction so our chocolate doesn't end up tasting like vomit !!
