I agree, mandates are unnecessary. EVs are better cars in almost every way and getting better rapidly. ICE vehicles are pretty much as good as they'll ever be. In a couple of years, you'd need to be pretty dumb to pay more for an ICE vehicle that's worse than an EV in every way. It'll literally be an IQ test by that point.

I have a Tesla and pay $0 for maintenance (because there literally is no maintenance required other than filling up windshield washer fluid) and have spent less than $100 to charge and drive it for the last 6 months. So, for 6 months of driving I'm paying less than I used to pay to fill up my gas car for 1 month!

They're reliable, efficient, and their gas consumption is miniscule compared with traditional vehicles, and since the battery charges by itself while going downhill - the electrical part doesn't require any special maintenence, and you can take it to any normal garage.

Hybrids are have many EV issues too. Complexity, vendor locks, remote control, high repair and ensurance bills (because of battery fire hazard, and high components cost), fast depreciation. Sometimes, hybrids are taxed twice, both as ICE car and as electric car (sometimes because of plug-in part, sometimes, owner are taxed for all motors independently - ICE motor and electric ones) Hybrids cost more than ICE cars. There is fuel economy in city rides, but it struggles to make hybrids profitable. Plug-in hybrid cars also support no fast charging.

Horsecrap. Be specific, just how in hell is it easier to prevent someone from driving an electric car than a gas one? They cost the same to buy (new obviously, they havent been out long enough to have many used ones so prices are still high), ALL require registration anywhere in the US, they are ALL controlled by computers and can therefore be shut off remotely by satellite; and theres probably 1000x as many electrical outlets near a piece of pavement in the US than gas stations in the US. Not saying you cant stop someone from driving an EV, nor that they wouldnt love to control you; just that its no easier than stopping someone from driving an ICE.

Teslas have instant torque, insane 0-60 times, literally the safest car you can buy, and I literally spend less money to drive my Model Y every day for 7 months than I did filling up my gas car for ONE MONTH! The tires wearing oht faster is a big deal too. In a regualr corolla you can burn through tires. Either thsy last 80k or you do a rotation and theyre already critically flawed and have to be replaced which happens to us. And if its noy that its a hole in a bad place thet cant plug. Or once i hit this dumb curb in the mjddle of an intersection and just had to buy a new tire. So these very lightweight corollas and civics their tires can go farther and farther and tires are expensive consumables they cost like 150 200 250+ depending on the vehicle so on a tesla youre talking thousands and thousands of dollars in tires and over the course of 20 30 years youll see theyll be using considerably more. So what they don't tell you: 1) A two car home switching to EVs charged at home is like adding 25 refridgerators to your electric bill. 2) The range is never what they say it is. Yes the fuel efficiency of a gas car is never what they say it is either, but you wont have a problem finding a gas station. A working rapid charger in podunk, Kansas, well, good luck. 3) If you can't guarantee that the juice coming thru the charger isn't created by fossil fuels, well, youre not being very green. 4) The mining and desposing of the EV components can make a diesel truck in a junkyard with its oil pan full look eco friendly.

When is this ban to become effective? Where exactly are you looking for EV chargers (charging stations?)? EVs can “survive” Canadian winters - they are on the roads in every type of weather, just as are ICE vehicles. No infrastructure? There are far fewer EVs than ICE vehicles (for now) and of course the development of “infrastructure” will take time - just as there were very few gas stations when ICE vehicles first came on the market. Those who got sucked in by the gov't hype have had their wallets lightened significantly. So many EV owners have buyer's remorse right now. For the few who don't, they will in the future as their EV value vaporizes to virtually nothing. Right now, car lots are full of unsold EV's and manufacturers are stopping production or have already stopped production because consumers are being educated on the pitfalls of EV ownership and won't buy them as a result.

I live on the Gulf Coast, when hurricanes come in we must drive long distances , sometimes have to drive through salt water covered roads. Two instant problems : NO charging stations over spillways( Louisiana) and saltwater causes batteries to either stop working or catch fire. EV’s are beneficial for a relatively same population of city dwellers. However, for others EV’s have unacceptable consequences.

Recently, I met this guy at work who purchased a very nice, brand new, shiny black pick up truck and drove from the other side of the state to my area for work. We live in a very rural state with long 'in the middle of nowhere' stretches that barely has enough gas stations and very minimal to non-existent charge stations. His battery estimate said he could make it to my area from his home on one charge without additional charging. His truck battery was almost drained on the highway 45 minutes from my area. He said as the battery drained he was unable to go up inclines or bumps. He called a tow that didn't have a charger to tow him to the nearest charging station. After waiting hours for it to charge... he was able to make the remaining 45 minutes. He was beyond late to make it on time. He appeared to still like his truck. He showed me under the hood... and to my surprise there was no 'engine stuff'. He had his lunch cooking in a crock pot and an expresso machine to make strong coffee. IMO, EVs are short distance transportation only... stay close enough to charge stations and to be able to call someone for help. For safety reasons, EVs are not the best for rural driving. This scenario makes EVs a non-pratical purchase for the majority of people. What if there are upset children that need to go home and the battery is dying? What if someone has an emergency and needs to flee quickly and they can't leave because the EV needs charging? What if a person works for a strict boss and the cold constantly drains the battery which will cause excessive lateness? What if a person has an on call job and needs to be on site within 20-30 mins and they can't leave because the battery is charging? So many scenarios that make me think gas vehicles are the better solution currently.

The good news: You rarely need to take it to a garage. It's not going to be long when even small workshops will be able to service or repair EVs. In fact it's a big chance to specialize in EV repair as the contract garages' of the manufacturers are asking hefty hourly rates.

@mro9466 Nope. A battery is a bundle of cells or cell bricks. Bricks are combined to modules. Modules are combined to make a battery. Changing the elements (cell, brick, module) is referred to as repair, while changing the whole bundle is rather an upgrade as you get new cells with improved technical characteristics. Most battery defects can be attributed to the failure of a few cells. In this case, swapping cells is a viable option. Some 3rd party battery refurbishers already exist. More will follow. It's similar to ICE engines. You don't swap a faulty engine for a new one, but get a refurbished replacement.

Here`s a one crazy repair story of a EV vehicle from my country. One unlucky owner of a Jaguar I-Pace, a posh electric vehicle, punctured the battery pack cover with a rock. There was no damage to the cells, only to the protective cover. The dealer did not want to change just the cover, but a whole battery pack due to "policy". The cost of battery pack swap was so high the insurance just crapped whole car, it was like 1-2 years old and cost a pretty penny.

The Pros: -no sales tax -trailer immediately gets a permanent plate meaning no more yearly tags while truck can get a permanent plate after 10 years -cool looking cow skull plate The cons: -$49/yr agent fee -$180 yearly tag fee -$750 initial registration Overall it’s worth it. I don’t think they charge any additional fee for having a hybrid or electric. But this is something you might want to look into. Companies do it all the time. When I worked for Pepsi, all of our trailers were plated from Texas even though the plant I worked at was in Ohio.

I sit very, very comfortable in a large large full size luxury automobile which tesla dosent even make. My jaguar XJL provides me with a highway range of 570 miles which supersedes any EV. No matter how many times i stop for what ever reason, i only have to stop once to fuel and takes me 3 to 5 minutes and not 20 to 30 minutes. I can easily drive for 3 to 5 hours before stopping to waste time. I'll keep my long range Jaguar XJl and leave well enough alone.....

It's insanity that we allowed these idiots to make EV requirement deadlines for an unrealistic technology on a large scale. I've thought EVs were cool ever since I was a kid and I still do, but you have to be realistic as to their use. If I lived in a city or in a year round warm climate, it would make a lot more sense to own an EV. If I had enough money to own two new vehicles, one EV for commuting and one gas car for road trips, camping, etc, it would also make sense to own an EV. An EV makes no sense for road trips, towing, long camping trips, or places where it's freezing for months. If you can only afford one vehicle and need a truck for serious towing and hauling and also long trips, an electric truck makes no sense. Now because of these EV mandates eventually there will be a shortage and demand for gas cars and trucks and something will have to be done. That's what happens when you vote for people that want to cripple the USA in the name of climate change for very little benefit, while China, India, and other countries pollute exponentially more and have no limitations. EVs and new technology will automatically be adopted as it starts to make more sense, without the government forcing it upon citizens.

Otherwise people here are confusing simple and viable. Simple is replacing a 8000$ module. Simple is replacing a 1000$ module that can no longer be purchased. Viable is not being stuck in either of those scenarios. Then we just need strong enough right to repair that we can go to a junk yard and pull a motor to replace a bad one and there will be plenty of parts around. The battery is really the sticking point because if they all go bad, you won't find good ones at a junkyard when it comes time to need one.

I just spent a week with a rented Tesla. These have awesome power when driving but everything else I hated. We went on a road trip & spent more time planning our next charging stop than we spent planning our holiday. We couldn’t drive at night because the daylight running lights kept flashing for no apparent reason. The air conditioning had a system error and wouldn’t work. The experience was good as far as I now have experienced the issues EVs have. I will stick with my petrol powered car.

I’m an EV owner in Iceland and whenever I travel abroad I try to rent a EV. I rented a Tesla Model Y from Hertz in Cananda, last October. It was great, and I would do it again. I plan ahead when travelling so I won´t have to face those charging issues. But like here is Iceland the problem is that there are not enough chargers around the country, but they are working on expanding charging infrastructure. Here is not that much difference in insurance for EV vs. Non EV they are all expensive.

if you live in a villa or house and have your own garage, you can simply have a charger installed in the garage where you charge the car. In Sweden, they are called charging boxes. Then you charge the car when you sleep at night at that time of day, electricity is probably the cheapest too

I am a fleet mechanic I have worked on just about every type of commercial heavy duty vehicle and equipment there is. The increase in electric and computer technology is an absolute failure, brand new trucks are out of service more often then olfer high mileage vehicles. A lot of the companies I worked for had older trucks with completely mechanical diesel engines that they planned to get rid of but ended up keeping a few as backups because they were the only trucks to run reliably. My point is I'm not surpirsed 40% of charging stations are failing.

Think about it. Outside Tesla, the charging infrastructure sucks even with government incentives. Car companies and government don’t know how to properly implement solutions to an issue that really isn’t an issue. If there really was a climate crisis, we would have had a space race type of R&D for alternative energy generation and transportation decades ago. When cars were first introduced, the public did not buy in until they got substantially better. EVs are still very early in development and forcing adoption of a technology that should be allowed to naturally grow is like a college student writing their essay an hour before. It makes a garbage product.

I’d love to have one. I work at a company that I can charge up free of charge. Problem is, I’m more interested in saving money than “saving the planet”. EVs themselves are typically more expensive, then insurance doubles or more, and my state doubles property tax on EVs. I’d like to own one, but until it would actually save me money month to month then they can keep it.

EV batteries discharge while the car isn't even running. The batteries aren't modular and can't be swapped out like the AA's in your TV remote. EV batteries are built into the chassis of the car so then they fail, the whole car has to be disassembled. And how are people who live in apartment building supposed to charge their car overnight?

As a power engineer i can tell you that the grid cannot handle double or tripple the load ...its not as easy as upping voltages. Rebuilding USA grid with required 30 new power plants would cost over a $100 TRILLION dollars as EACH POLE AND TRANSFORMER would need to be replaced

One thing not mentioned that I think is an even bigger issue is that switching 100% of the country to EVs will overload the electric grid. Our grid is outdated and at times can barely keep up with demand. I don’t think adding this much constant demand to it will help

This is the #1 way to know that EV is a scam. For the country to go fully EV, we need to add 3x current generation capacity to what we already have. In practical terms, we should be adding electric power plants as fast or faster than India & China, but we're not. In California, which already has summertime electric brownout / blackout problems when everybody is running their A/C, they even voted to shut down their one remaining nuclear power plant. It's as if what they really want, is for everyone to walk or bicycle.

Thermal runaway. HUGE problem when EV batteries catch fire. They can't be put out simply. Some of them spontaneously combust. Fire departments need special blankets to smother the the entire car. I wouldn't want an EV in my garage, or be parked next one that catches fire. Plenty of videos on YT of such fires.

All of these problems I talked about with my friends about 15 years ago. At the time, I was unsure of the conversations because of the increasing production and popularity of electric vehicles. Now, it’s all just the same exact problems actually happening. The biggest killer is EV not being as environmental friendly as people think. Protecting the environment is the whole point.

I’m so sorry. My dad passed away and I didn’t get a say so in choosing the buyer for his house. My brother sold it to a investment firm ( cash) just a few days ago , against my advice. It wasn’t even the better bid! I gave him a lecturer on dads home going to good family and private ownership kind of thing…not to be rented out! But he liked the quick sale cash thing. It is very understandable why! I am from Europe and here the distances are so small that you can easily travel with one charge. I have been to USA and I know the distances you travel daily, EV’s are not the best option. In USA it is very hard to live if you don’t have a car.

How much is the initial cost? How much does it cost to replace the battery? Can our power grid handle every home plugging one in? Not allowed in parking garages due to excessive weight. Slow refuel. Works poorly in the cold.

In a continental size nation a one size fits all is unworkable. EVs are fantastic for urban use. The L.A basin is perfectly suitable for the electric car. Pheonix/Tucson, Dallas/Ft Worth, Atlanta, Nashville, Miami/Dade county and Tampa/St Petersburg have temperate climates and high level of single family homes with garages to house power plugins. Rural settings with cold temperatures and long commutes are not as workable for EVs. It's about freedom of choice, the consumer knows what works for their individual needs.

Some countries have adjusted well Like the Netherlands where 90% of all transportation is electric. there is nothing wrong with the EVs, The REAL planning is the problem. All they have to do is make them affordable, put chargers everywhere, and make the charging FREE!! As far as pollution, vehicles drive all over the place and are in direct contact with people, whereas the manufacturers are in one place so that's the difference.

Where I live in Australia, I usually drive from Wollongong to Melbourne, which is usually around an 8hr drive in my petrol car. Last time I went I decided to hire an EV, because I was considering buying one. That 8hr drive turned into a 15hr drive as I had to stop twice to recharge. And even then each recharge wasn't 100%. Not even close. One of the stations had 2 chargers. Both taken. And I really had to do some numbers crunching to see if I would make it to the next charging station. I had to call the petrol stations where the EV chargers were, to ask if they were taken already. 2 out of the 3 I called were taken. The 1 that wasn't, I made it there just before the car died. I ended up flying back home. I'm never getting an EV

It won't get better. There's no magical tech round the corner. Electricity storage doesn't have the same energy density as petrol or diesel. That's an intrinsic fundamental limitation of our reality/universe. It's completely different to the computer revolution of the last couple of decades, that was always feasibly possible for chips to get incomprehensibly small, it was even accurately predicted. Battery technology is not, it has fundamental limitations that will never go away.

I'm a Hertz customer here in Australia (where the EV market saturation in nowhere like it is in the US), and yet every time I go to pick up my gas-powered rental they always try to "upgrade" me to an EV, simply because no-one wants to rent them. Their lot is full of them as a result and they're all just sitting out there unused & gathering dust, and it is evidently putting huge pressure on their supply of the far more desirable & in-demand gas & diesel vehicles. Just got back from an interstate trip and as usual on collection of my pre-booked Hertz rental at the airport they wanted to aggressively push me into an EV, and as usual I said "thanks, but no thanks; I'll stick to what I booked". They really tried the hard-sell on me too and offered huge discounts, bonus points, free days etc but I stood my ground and flat-out refused; the lady at the rental desk confided in me that of the dozens of customers (including myself) that they had made the same offer to so far just that morning alone, not one had accepted their "generous" offer. Although all of their gas/diesel vehicles were already sold-out they had a big sign up on the counter that read "Vehicles available now for immediate rental; no bookings required"; however upon further enquiry by hopeful potential customers, they would find out that these available vehicles were of course all EV's.

Besides all the 80 reasons you already heard not to buy an EV: 1. touchscreens are more dangerous than tactile buttons and with the sun glare, sometimes it's dangerous to just have a screen in the middle instead of actual buttons/dials/gauges 2. you can be tracked much easier and hey, if you don't make your payments, it'll drive itself to the repo yard, or simply lock you out 3. lots of features are extra payments that you have to pay for, the self-driving stuff, other features, that's all extra on a subscription model 4. electromagnetic radiation? sitting on top of a giant electric battery pack for hours and hours a week, what's the health effects of that? are my balls getting cooked off? 5. the batteries are super dangerous, even a small fender-bender can write the car off if you damage the battery pack or the housing in any way 6. you'll never be able to re-sell it, it'll lose all its value the moment you start using it 7. they want to push and nudge people towards renting, not owning. so you keep making your monthly payment for a car "subscription" and you give the car back at the end of your term: you will own nothing and be happy.

Work at a body shop. Tesla parts are hard to get because they won't supply structural parts to third party companies. They made them so they have to go back to the dealership for repairs. We can fix them, it's just a matter of getting the parts so we usually pay a good markup on them, which the insurance company pays if they want to fix it. It's insane what the parts cost.
