Turkish Delight is typically flavoured with rose water. I quite like those bars by Fry's. For a few years, a supermarket in the UK stocked a Polish made TD, which had a very nice texture and flavour (dusted not chocolate coated). The rose flavour was very evident in that.... I believe roses are edible too.

You can't get much more British than thus selection. Treacle and Licorice toffees, humbugs and blackcurrant and licorice boiled sweets are my childhood. We used to have old fashioned sweet shops where everything was weighed. The assistant would stand in front of hundreds of jars of different sweets and as a child I would take forever to decide and drive the shopkeeper crazy. Then there were penny sweets and mixed bags. Different regions of the UK have different names for them.

Cool history on pontefract cakes! Here in the USA they keep the shire part of the name when saying it.
@debbielough77544 жыл бұрын
The liquorice ones are pronounced Pont-e-fract cakes. They're a local to the town of Pontefract, which was the centre of liquorice growing in Britain from the 16th to 19th centuries. The stamp on them is the castle gate, which has been used since about 1612, I think. Haribo's major UK factory is in Pontefract. Personally, I've always hated liquorice sweets (though I quite like liquorice root). I really like Fry's Turkish Delight (it's rose flavoured), but it's very very different from real Turkish Delight, which is a tougher jelly, and it comes in different flavours like rose, lemon, almond, honey, pistachio... (If you ever get to London, or if they do international shipping, Fortnum and Mason do it in small mixed boxes - It's my treat whenever I go to London.) Kendal mint cake was taken by Edmund Hillary when they climbed Everest for the first time - apparently they sat at the top nibbling mint cake and trying to get to grips with having made it. Shackleton took it with him when they tried to cross Antarctica. It's similar to Scottish tablet. Almost pure sugar. And yes, there's also a brown mint cake, made using brown sugar. It also comes chocolate covered as well (dark or milk). Prawn cocktail crisps are Marie Rose sauce flavour really.

Turkish Delight & to a lesser extend black liquorice are the Marmite of the confectionery world...wait you have tried Marmite right? Caramac was a pretty big hit in the 80's/90's in Scotland, though dated prior to that. Made by a UK company called Rowntree who had a a good range of UK sweets & chocolates. To be really nerdy, Rowntree got bought out by Nestle, however Rowntree kept a degree of autonomy (and their workers) over their products. Nestle had bought shares in Rowntree over the years, then quickly offered Rowntrees a deal where they offered the management a 1 day only buy-out deal, after finding out that a rival company had been buying up ex-Rowntree shares elsewhere that would have seen Rowntrees taken over and possibly ditched (apart from the recipes). Rowntrees were based in York, a city most people would recommend you visit should you visit our shores one day - for far wider valid historical reasons, not just chocolate bars lol - they have a shop there to tell this ~120 year old confectionery company history Kendal mint cake isn't terrible, however it is not an everyday/one a week/once a month/once a year item 99% of people would buy these days. It's pretty much now sold as a survival food to put in your kit bag when going hiking/camping etc as an energy booster. Pretty much most of us in the UK have probably got some 5+ year old untouched bars in our camping kit lol Anyways, another great vid, even with another two flavours down, you've still only just scraped the surface of the UK's crisp game :^)

I tried some Kendal mint cake, when I was in Kendal. It's supposedly something to keep in your pocket for emergencies ... when you get stuck on a hike. I prefer a Mars bar.

From a previous video, you tried kinder Happy Hippos. I bought them through Amazon and loved them. I just yesterday found Kinder Bueno, (which tastes exactly the same just without the Hippos) at my local Giant in West Chester (Chester County)! YUMMMMMMMM

Well I always thought the most traditional Turkish delight flavour is rose, but I see lots of people commenting lemon too, but I do know it does come in different colours/flavours! though when I think on Turkish delight I typically think on the red/pink one, which is rose flavoured! :)
@FromtheHobbitHole5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for commenting! We are seeing lemon and pistachio listed quite a lot along with rose. It’s interesting that Rose is one of the main flavors as it isn’t as common of a flavor for us here in the States.

A lot of people comment on shrimp or prawn smell or taste when trying prawn cocktail but there is no fish in it in any form of flavouring, it's purely the cocktail sauce.

Firstly I have to say I am a big fan of Frys Turkish Delight. but it bears little resemblance to real Turkish Delight. The "Real" Turkish Delight has no chocolate. for a start. and the texture is different. I'm not sure how many flavours there are, but the ones I like are the Rose Water flavour and Almond. They are absolutely delicious and you have got to try them....

Real Turkish delight is more rose flavoured and covered in icing sugar/powder. Frys Turkish delight is more corner shop chocolate bar snack, whereas the real stuff is a luxury and to be eaten in small cubes. Personally I love the frys one better!

Regards the marmite you mentioned, recommend you try banana and marmite toasting! Toast you bread then add the marmite, not too thick and then slice the banana onto it and make a sandwich, also good for hangovers

Hi guys another fun video from you both. Hayley made me laugh in this one the way she kept going back to the crisps. I guess the baby wanted a taste too 😁 Ileave really near to Kendal where the mint cake is made it also comes in brown or choc covered and you can also buy it in little silver round foil patty trays as well. As others have said it's aimed at walkers/hikers and climbers to get quick energy. We live very close to the Lake District so there are lots of walkers and climbers. Glad u enjoyed the prawn cocktail flavour crisps but for me the only place for them is the bin 😂 I have a real aversion, they have a strange sweetness that i really dont like. Agree that turkish delight is better without the choc and is a middle eastern/ med thing but sold here too. Mostly in a mix of rose and lemon flavour but it does come in all kinds. I personally like the pistachio or mint one as well as the rose...actually any of them 😁 the Caramac chocolate was something we ate more as kids. Have a great week and Happy Birthday!!!🎂

The stuff you buy is always too chewy, they don't know how to make it properly. My mum used to make proper homemade crunchy treacle toffee. You have to boil the mixture longer to make it set crunchy. Keep dropping bits into cold water to test how it sets. Crunchy toffee won't pull your teeth out like the chewy stuff, much easier to eat.
