True. I am from Serbia, and we were under the Ottoman Empire for 500 years or so. It is natural to adopt or assimilate with other cultures under those circumstances. So yeah, a vast majority of our food habbits has origins in the Turkish culture, but we changed some things here and there... I think that's a common thing in all Balkan countries. (I don't want to say Yugoslavia, like Milan did in this video because Balkan is not just Yugoslavia. There are Bulgaria, Albania and Greece too. We all have very similar food or ways to prepare that food. Again, we adopted all those ways under Ottomans, and that is a mutual thing for all peoples, here on Balkans.

And then we are the one who provoke ..🙄 No it’s not, if you are asking But the thing is that if there are Albanian bakery in Serbia that are working it just means that we are more kind than you guys.. never have I ever heard a Serbian people opening something in Albania.. it says it all about the people you know ..

Darija Barjaktarevic what a pretty girl you are. Let’s get back to the topic now. You haven’t been to Albania. Amazing country you shall go. Do you know Albanians don’t care. I go back there every summer and I heard Albanians playing Serbian music in their cars. Actually, Tirana is more tolerant than Belgrade. But your last name is Albanian. I suggest you do some research. Adding a “Vic” at the end doesn’t change your ancestry. What an irony
@darijabarjaktarevic-gojkov9177
@darijabarjaktarevic-gojkov9177 4 жыл бұрын
Albanian Pie Thank you bre.Its just that whole Balkan is listening to Serbian music, not just Albanians. No, I have never been, i can admit, but i am not talking about Tirana, I just commented your commnt above. And also i am commenting the thing that I have seen in Serbia. Not that i am living on Balkan, so thats just during the vacatons .. I am half bosnian (half Muslim) and my fathers last name is Bajraktarevic and its modified in 90s cause of the situation I don’t know why.. but therefore i can say that i am raised in the family where religion is not important (eventhough it was 90s my mother orthodox and my fater muslim married each other) to mar myself clear, I am just commenting ur comment above Peace !
@mr.g3940
@mr.g3940 4 жыл бұрын
Darija Barjaktarevic many Albanians the last centuries had to claim Bosnian to spare themselves from Serb atrocities, Sandjak, Nis and throughout. I am sure your grandparents if they are alive would probably speak Albanian. Your last name is as Albanian as the last name Toshiba is Japanese and Wang Chinese...

I, as well as my family who was born and raised in Serbia, refer to ourselves as Yugoslavian from time to time, just as I did here. As a matter of fact, the Buzzfeed video we are commenting on referred to the food mentioned here being "Yugoslavian". Turkish people don't get butthurt. You came to our land and conqured it for over 400 years. Ofcourse we have your food, but we prepare it much better. Thats what happens when you think you are badass and force people to accept your culture. If you didn't came to Balkan, maybe you would be famous for this food, but you made a mistake, and now this is our food :-)

We were a very big family for 600 years and you can see it by looking at that we all are cooking same food in the kitchen like a family even in 2014. We are still family and familly members can fight and can be separated or even hate eachother till death but it doesn't change the fact that we had been a big family for 600 years.I think we were all young (i mean as countries) and we needed freedom so we decided to leave our family behind and live our own lives. I'm happy for that we have same food. Enjoy it brother.

The White Wolf Turks didnt made you slaves dude and after 600 years there is no Turkish and Balkan seperate cultures its one ottoman culture just a turkish royal family but multicultural empire with multicultural government and divan members from all corners of the empire. Ottoman Empire is not even a Turkish empire, it was in the beginning but after it became a multicultural big country with a composition of cultures just like USA right now. Think of it like American Colonies were first found by England but after independance and mass immigration there were many people with many cultures living together with leaders of different cultures, and there was a president coming from a particular culture. Does the president's culture means that culture is the dominant one? No its the composition of cultures that matters. And becoming the leader does not mean making slaves.

Quinlan I'm not disrespecting 19 Slovenians that died for their country but i simply can not compare a few gunshootings in 10 days with 5 year long war in Croatia and B&H which devasteted the countries leaving 120000 dead, millions of refugees and tens of billions of dollars in damages,and then kosovo in the late nineties,and then NATO bombing of Serbia ..what i am saying is that it is no surprise people don't usually mention Slovenia in context of yugoslav wars

So, what do you say about Balkan food? Really delicious, right?!?!??! Yes, it's truth that Turkish people and Balkan people share some of the same dishes, but the preparation is much better done in the Balkans. But for the real feeling and passion to be ignited you need a home made Brandy and a Tamburica band from Vojvodina, then you can see what is all about.

I don't think they mean for it to be stereotypical. Its probably just an easy way for them to find foreigners but you're right though they should find alternatives ways to find foreigners in America.

But how else would the foreigner be able to take them to the restaurants? You don't just go find foreigners and say "Hey, wanna hop in our car? We'll bring you to your favorite food joint!" The drivers are more comfortable with taking people places and riding around town with them.

Ryan Marin I think people are having misconceptions here. They are Looking in ubers and cabs because A- People of all race and ethnicity drive people around B- When they find the right drover, they can have them drive to the restaurant. Its just convenient, instead of going around looking for foreigners and giving them ride, because they wont trust random guys making a video.

Uh.. that's all basically Turkish or Middle-Eastern food. Yes, its very common in areas of former Yugoslavia historically influenced by the Ottoman Empire, but its not indigenous "Balkan" food. The best term overall would probably be "Ottoman cuisine", as in the cuisine of the Ottoman Empire. *Kefir* - a drink originating from the Caucasus region. *Burek* and *baklava* - Greek dishes of course, originating well away from the Balkans peninsula: on the island of Cyprus. *Sarma* - from the Turkish word "sarmak", "to roll up", a Turkish dish. *Cevapi* - a Balkans evolution of the kebab, an Iranian dish adopted heavily by the Turks and brought with them into the Balkans. The word actually derives from the Iranian (Farsi) word "kabap" ("kabap" -> "cevap"), meaning "to fry". *Tufahije* - an Iranian (Persian) dish historically common in the entire Ottoman Empire. *Shopska salad* - a Bulgarian side-dish. So yeah, its from the Balkans, amazingly, but its not a former Yugoslav dish for the record. 4:29 He's right. The Balkans don't really have their own cuisine. Maybe a rogue meal or two, but its all basically Turkish or Italian (in Dalmatia and Istria) or Hungarian/German (in the north). But I admit that point is debateable.. who knows what it takes to have your own proper "cuisine". I'm from "the Balkans", btw... Split, Croatia.

klipser66 "Sarma", from the Turkish word "sarmak", "to roll up", a common Turkish meal even today. "Cevapi", a form of kebab (Turkish meal), the word actually derives from "kebab" ("kebap" -> "cevap"). Kefir comes from the Caucasus region, and is in no way a Balkan drink. Tufahije - a Persian dish common in the entire Ottoman Empire, etc...

Well if you knew history, then you would know that all of the balkans was first inhabitated in the same time as turkey and albania, etc. Thats why we all have similar words and meals because we also share history. Kebap is a totaly different meal then ćevapi. Pljeskavica is similar to the meat that is in hamburgers but with different spices. Sarma is a turkish word but it is not their meal, and is indigineous to balkan countries. Just because we share history with our neighbours, doesn't mean we don't have our own.
@dIRECTOR259
@dIRECTOR259 9 жыл бұрын
klipser66 Utter nonsense. The first human migrations into Anatolia and the Balkans, over 50,000 years ago, have no relevance to the cuisine in the area, nor the common words present there. The Turkish words we're discussing belong to the Turkic family of languages, which first appeared in Central Asia (the homeland of Turkic peoples). They were brought into the Balkans some 500-600 years ago, to a population speaking mostly Slavic languages, which are Indo-European and have little or no common ground with Turkic languages. Persian (Farsi) words are Indo-European at least, but are in no way of the Balkans. They belong to the Indo-Iranian branch of the Indo-European family, and not the Slavic branch. I find it comical you're the one questioning my knowledge of history.... Sarma is a Turkish meal, not indigenous to the Balkans, but brought there by the Ottomans. The cevapi are a form of kebab, and a development of it: they are present in Turkey as much as in the Balkans, and originate in Persia. The origin of the word "cevap" is the Persian (Farsi) word "kabap" meaning "fry". Etc... These are Middle-Eastern foods. Not Balkan foods.
@dIRECTOR259

***** Ajvar is indeed a Serbian garnish, but its not a dish. Beans (pasulj, grah) are hardly a Balkans invention :), its one of the oldest cultivated vegetables. Kaymak is a Central Asian garnish, etc...

Why are so many people complaining? We were a part of the Ottoman Empire, so it's pretty obvious we share traditions, history and cuisine with Turkish people. You don't see anyone saying that isn't true, right? Get over yourselves. We prepare our food differently than you. So yes, in the video they're talking about Balkan food and Balkan cuisine. I don't see why people are making a problem out of this. I just think it's nice that they actually took time to get to know our food. And the best part out of all this is the fact they genuinly enjoyed it. We should be proud. All of us. But no, people are fighting in the comment section. So typical. It's like we can never seem to agree on anything.

I think it's because most people felt unhappy that their heritage wasn't included. I'm speaking from a Bulgarian point of view and I was a little upset that traditional foods (lukanka "Луканка", lutenica, "лютеница" or kashkaval "кашкавал") weren't included or even mentioned. It seems that most of the food was from Turkey which is completely different from traditional Balkan foods.
@m.t.8754

Laurence Wilson I am from Bosnia and I can tell you that the food they were eaten was typical Balkan food. Because everything on the table - from burek to hurmasice - we also eat in Bosnia. Like I said, we share traditions and culture with the Turks, but that was not only their cuisine. It was ours as well. I get that you're from Bulgaria and that it's a little dissapointing that they didn't pay attention to your heritage and cuisine, but Milan was from Montenegro so I totally get that they mostly had the food he knows and loves. I guess we saw it from his point of view. There are a nice amount of countries who are a part of the Balkan and all those countries are so different from each other. So yeah, we do have dishes who are the same, but we also have so many who aren't. They couldn't put everything in the video I guess.

I am greek myself, and i can assure you, he did not pronounce it correctly. Sure, for an American, he did a good job of not butchering like most would, but he did not "pronounce it correctly with no effort" as you said. He used the short sound which is present in english words like "can." This sound is not present in the greek language or, as far as i know, spanish. Also, he did not put enough emphasis on the T or O, and pronounced the O slightly wrong. Anyway, it really doesnt matter in the end, and I am also impressed that he knew spanakopita right away
