The Brits watching Americans eat with fork and knife kzbin.info/www/bejne/hYGnkKBoocZ8isUsi=qs2-Lpe1dzxg5Auz

They get their cuterly etiquette from the early 18th century French where a knife was classed as a weapon (like guns are not 🤣). The French then realised how inefficient it was and started using cutlery like the rest of the cutlery using world, but Americans continued to use this awkward way of cutting food (sometimes in a strange way), putting the knife down and then swapping hands to eat which makes no sense to the rest of the world and even American spies during the war were getting caught due to the way they ate their food. I've seen a lot of these reaction videos and it can be painful to watch sometimes. Especially eating a Sunday roast with a fork, eating one item at a time instead of trying different combinations. It's stone cold by the time they're half way through. Saying that, it's their way of eating and I love watching them try British food even if it's in an awkward way 😆 BTW I have never put brown sause on beans on toast, just plenty of butter on the toast adding salt and pepper to the beans.

@Simulacra7192 күн бұрын
Thickly-buttered toast is absolutely essential. It has to be European-style salted butter for the best result. If you can’t get Anchor brand over there, Kerrygold is always good too. As others have said, there are so many combinations, so it’s good to try a few. As Heinz have changed their recipe over the years and made them more bland, I always stir in salt, a good squirt of Heinz ketchup, and a good dash of Lea and Perrins Worcestershire Sauce after heating the beans (would probably produce a similar effect to pairing with HP Sauce as you did here). Proper English mature cheddar is always good as well - the sharpness blends well with the sweet flavour. I’m a bit weird though and don’t dump the beans on the toast as I hate the texture of soggy bread, so I have the beans on the side and dip/top the toast with each bite. Happy experimenting!

The HP sauce (originally Houses of Parliament sauce) on beans on toast is more popular in the North of England. Over here half a tin of beans is 25-40p, 1 large banked potato is 15-20p, Good quality fresh sausage is 20-30p + how ever much cheese you want, if your making it for yourself and your son it would be less than £1 per serving. I'm sure there may be one in the body of these comments saying this, but try your beans on toast with a cheese topplng and a sprinkle of Worcestershire Sauce. The way I do it, is to prepare the beans on well buttered toast as you have done ( i didn't hear if you had buttered the toast, but it does make a huge difference). So, while the beans are heating and the bread toasting, grate some good cheddar. When ready, butter the toast well, spoon on the beans, then cover with a decent amount of grated cheese over the beans and pop it under the grill (broiler?). Get the cheese to melt, preferably to bubble and brown. When done, add your 'Wooster' sauce! Serve piping hot - lush! It's called either a Cheese Beano (what my family calls it) or a Cheesy Beano. You can then go a step further and do the beans on toast and top as per a Welsh Rarebit - Ah! Deep joy!

Hello, well this cropped up on my feed so as an Englishman I guess I should throw in a bit of background on the reason 'beans on toast' [also known in the UK as 'poor mans steak'] grew so strongly in popularity in the UK. As you may know during World War 2 we had severe food shortages resulting in rationing of foods [ particularly meat products]. Beans however and other tinned produce was not rationed as heavily and so with meagre choices due to the rationing beans on toast became for many the main source of daily protein. As you will know when you add a 'grain' [in this case the wheat in the bread] to beans they become a 'complete' protein. Hence 'poor mans steak'. Obviously back then it wasn't 'brand specific' but Heinz became the market leader in the 1950's and has remained there ever since which is why people are always told to use Heinz beans! So for many in the Cities [the rural folks basically went poaching for wild game meats etc he he] 'beans on toast' was a bit of a life saver. And it rapidly worked its way into the national psyche and across all class barriers until it reached the point now where it's part of the fabric of the nation. As for HP Sauce, the HP stands for Houses of Parliament and it was indeed originally created as an 'upmarket and exclusive' sauce in Parliament that proved so popular that Politicians were taking it home and thence also onto the national market. Just a couple of tidbits on the history of the dish you have just enjoyed! My personal preference as a cheap quick and easy meal....heavily buttered toast, then the beans, grated cheese melted over, then the sauce and finally topped off with a runny yolk fried egg. Try it on a winter day! Delightful. Best wishes.

@@SteveChiverton Thank you so much for that history lesson. We love history in our family and that was imbeldebeemled helpful. I may use that information in a future video. In the USA we also went through food shortages during WWII. Meat was mostly reserved for the soldiers, primarily beef and pork. But chicken was not rationed, therefore American families could have as much chicken as they could afford. It seems that overnight entire cook books popped up with such titles as “A Thousand Ways to Prepare Chicken.” And most families grew their own vegetables in their gardens. And similar to the UK, the people in the rural areas hunted for meat like deer and bison. Thanks for watching! Cheers, mate!

Use the Brown sauce on a bacon butty, made with either English or Canadian Bacon definitely not American bacon..... And use a fluffy bread roll, not sliced bread, and if you can find it use Kerry Gold butter (its available all over America, take enough butter out of the container to butter both halves of the bread roll and store covered at room temperature to make sure it spreads easily) don't use American butter English/Irish butter is high in Beta-Carotene and is high in natural Vitamin A... Fry the bacon in a skillet/frying pan, until it browns on the raised areas, but not so much that it crisps up like American bacon, it should pull apart easy and be a little chewy, Put the HOT bacon directly into the butty add a little of the oil you fried it in as well, put a generous splash of the HP on it and immediately pop the lid on (I meant the top of the bread roll), so the butter melts from the heat of the bacon.... The perfect Bacon Butty.

Good reaction guys - beans on toast… toast is buttered and set on a plate - beans are poured over a portion of the toast in a heap not over the whole slice ! That way you get to vary how much beans versus toast you eat in each bite! Brown sauce like any sauce should always be on the side ( try HP with bacon or even chips!) Horrified by the use of the fork in eating … in particular - it seems Americans aren’t taught to use a knife and fork properly - I was cringing … the food stabbed instead of sitting atop the fork ! Beans aren’t just a snack they are used as a side to many dishes and in England served as part of an English ! Breakfast fry! Great engaging positive vibe in the video !

I did a quick calculation of the number of versions of 'beans on toast' - just from my local supermarkets, I came up with the number of 361,984 - there are a lot of ways to have beans on toast! This is before additional sauces or toppings are added! It depends on the bread; the beans; the butter...I wouldn't have HP sauce, that's possibly a northern thing (sic) but I know a lot of people top with cheese and I prefer to top with sausages, you can add a lot of toppings...and some people even have 'beans in toast' (beans stuffed into a toasted bread roll, possibly topped with cheese!) ...rather than 'beans on toast.' I even know some people who have cold beans on toast! 😬
