Simon Heath when Jollibee first opened in Toronto about a couple of years back, there were long queues of diners to get into the store...literally for months. I was stumped because Jollibee was so common back home, and if you wanted to be fancier, you go to a McDonald’s instead. Anyways...my foreign friends now love Jollibee fried chicken now and the Salisbury steak.

On the Halo-Halo (mixed-mixed), you are supposed to mix it all up, stir it and crush the flan and ube to mix with the sweetened white beans, monggo dark beans, grated coconut, nata de coco (cured jello like chewy) sweetened. The shaved ice and milk is supposed to dull some of the sweetness as this is a dessert that is loaded with sugar. You enjoy this once, in a while, because it is so sweet. And enjoy it by spooning bits of the ingredients with the ice and milk.

Great work guys! Try the breakfast meats with a splash of vinegar. I also cheat and splash Italian dressing or Caesar dressing on the meats. And/or fruit on the side like pineapple, mango, banana,... Filipino meals have a mix of sour, salty, savory, fruit/veg, hot/cold, sweet, etc. Great job too getting the kids to try new things. Best wishes.

Halo-Halo ( mix mix) you need to mix it so you can taste the whole flavor. Toppings: leche flan custard mango ice cream or ube ice cream ingredients are evaporated milk ice shave sweetened beans, garbanzos, nata de coco, sweet potato, banana, jello and jack fruit.

My technique in mixing halo-halo is you stick the spoon in the middle all the way through the bottom and pull it up a little bit but not all the way. Repeat it until all of it are mixed up. Usually, purple-ish in color especially if there is ube in it.

Halo-halo is a summer snack/treat. Yes, you are supposed to mix everything up before you eat it. Its comprised of sweetened red kidney beans, cubes of jello, a napa palm fruit called kaong, strings of sweetened coconut, slivers of jackfruit, a sliver of creme brulee/leche flan, and a scoop of ube ice cream. Growing up in the ‘80s, our neighborhood halo-halo vendor would sell their wares in the street with a big slab of ice that she shaves unto yr glass as a final topping to all those fruity ingredients. All the neighborhood kids bring their own glass for it, and so all the neighborhood kids try and outdo each other in bringing the biggest glass possible.

There is sugar at the bottom of the ice that you are going to dig in and mix along with other ingredients and continue mixing until you tasted the sweetness in your tongue. Mix all the ingredients all along then enjoy it by sipping or using a spoon to pick up those larger pieces. That is what halo halo is for. Thanks
@tutzkhan51754 жыл бұрын
Hi BigJon TV, you can fully mix the halo-halo and eat it or you can eat first the ice cream then mix it fully. @14:49 I think that’s the Leche plan on the spoon. I think the odd one for most foreigners is the texture of the Jack fruit because it’s a little bit slimy but once you used on eating it it’s a good sweetened fruits.

Halo halo’s appeal comes as you dig in. It gets better as you draw down. All the flavors total up as you go to the bottom of the glass. Scoop a different component along with the melted ice everytime you scoop. You will regret finishing it because it will leave you wanting for more.

This video just warmed my heart! Your family is so open and adventurous for trying Filipino cuisine! I grew up eating all that stuff for breakfast! And when I’m not lazy, I’ll take the time on a Sunday and make a traditional Filipino brunch with all that stuff. It’s unfortunate that Jollibee cooks their eggs over hard. If the eggs were over easy, you can mash the yolks into the rice and make an egg sauce! As far as halo halo, there isn’t really a right way to eat it. Some like to really mix and incorporate all the ingredients together, while others like to mix just a little bit and eat the stuff in chunks!
@BigJonTV4 жыл бұрын
It was a great experience! I agree with the runny egg for me, that would've been perfect! Its funny you say that about halo halo, we've been told a thousand times we did it all wrong! Lol. I really wanted to experience it one flavor at a time! Thank you for watching and commenting!

Basically and literally Halo-halo means mix-mix or to mix everything and anything from bottom to top. What made it unique is the fusion of different flavors from it’s ingredients. It takes maybe some more try for you to appreciate it’s uniqueness.

Thanks for trying out Filipino foods! The halo-halo is basically composed of shaved ice, evaporated milk, sugar and your choice of toppings. It is traditionally eaten by mixing all the ingredients first so that the milk, sugar and all the flavors blend with the rather bland shaved ice (because otherwise it would just taste like half-sweetened ice, and there's really no fun in that) but there's really no strict way to eat it. When I eat halo-halo for example, I eat all the different components first like the ube ice cream, flan, beans so that I get a taste of everything before mixing them all together to turn into one sherbet-like dessert. Hope you enjoy it next time! :)

Great stuff! The halo halo is supposed to be mixed usually to the point where the whole thing takes the color of the uber ice cream. But it's always a struggle and gets messy because you don't get any wiggle room at all. Once mixed up then you get the true flavor of it, the shaved ice gets the flavor of all the fruits and beans. Without having mixed it, I could imagine you tasted just shaved ice and milk, which isn't very pleasant. It's nothing crazy though, unlike the 3 breakfast meats you had that have an unusual taste/flavorings. :)

The beef and pork are marinated hours to overnight to get the flavors in...but if you do try making them, there are a lot of versions on how to cook them OR if you have asian grocery stores there they have packed marinated ones where you thaw and fry them with a bit of oil in a pan. And about the halohalo, yeah you need to mix it all, reason it taste odd because you taste it per piece

It's a matter of your on sweetness you liked 👍... Halo - Halo is a good refreshments .

Yellow ice cream in halo-halo is usually cheese flavor. I like to eat and enjoy a bit of the ice cream and leche flan on top separately before I start mixing whatever is left. But there's no one right way to eat halo-halo just make sure to mix well especially the bottom as that's were the sugar is usually at. Ingredients from top to bottom usually are: ice cream (ube and cheese), leche flan, gulaman (comes in red or green like jello but it's made from seaweed), sago, sweetened of everything: plantain, beans, coconut meat, sweet potato, ube; granulated sugar, shaved ice, evaporated milk
