Thanks for the reaction lads! And you got it right you can only carry the ball for four steps before you have to 'solo' it (ie. balance on your stick). The stick is called a hurley and the ball is called a sliotar (an Irish word), it's similar size and weight to a baseball. You put it in the goals for 3 points or over the bar for 1. One of the most skillful and toughest sports out there! But it's only really played here in Ireland. Well you'll find clubs in the USA and stuff too where you get Irish emigrants, but Ireland is where it gets massive crowds (along with gaelic football it's one of the national sports here).

The second I started watching it I fell in love with the game. My older brother and I couldn't wait for the game to be shown. I Love the roughness , it reminds me of Hockey. Hurling, camogie and Gaelic football are our national sports. Players are all amateur and do not get payed for playing and must play for the county they were born in. The whole thing is organised by a an Ireland-wide( i.e including the 6 Counties of the North which are still under British rule) organisation called the Gaelic Athletic Association or G.A.A. for short. Kids start playing very young for their village or local area teams and school teams if they're good and as they get older, if they're really good they may get picked to play for their county, the county of their birth. There are matches going on at all levels all over the country but the big finale is the All-Ireland Final played at Croke Park above in Dublin and the whole nation, plus Irish in Britain where I was reared, will be watching it. Whichever county wins the All-Ireland has huge celebrations and the players are welcomed home like heroes. Seeing as the game originated around 3000 years ago and was part of the warriors training for battle, it's quite appropriate,lol!

Howya lads. Hurling is one of, if not, the oldest field game in the world. Its history goes back well over 1000 years based on a form of hunting that goes back even longer. The ball...called a (pronounced) SLITTHER....is hard leather and can easily break fingers if not caught correctly. It is almost as hard as stone. The "stick" is called a hurley stick and players treat their hurley like gold. Hurling is recognised as the fastest field game in the world.

Football and Hurling have crowds rivaling any major sport in the world get all the players are semi pro. Work during the day then train at night. The GAA governs Gaelic football and hurling throughout the world, and Gaelic handball and rounders in Ireland. Gaelic handball (not to be confused with Olympic handball/team handball, which is popular on the continent) is played in Ireland, Canada, and the USA. Rounders is played mostly in Britain, where it's governed by Rounders England. The GAA version has slightly different rules, and they play a match under compromise rules once a year. Baseball is descended from rounders. Camogie and Ladies Gaelic football are organized by separate organizations which work closely with the GAA.

I played Hurling as a kid and was always told to keep an eye on the ball and I will get the job done. I now find that relevant in all sorts of work and situations, like when you're working at height or in dangerous situations you forget the dangers and get the job done as your concentrating on your goal or outcome, Focus and push on to the target and 99 times out of 99 time you be grand coz fear will always stop you jumping for the ball in the first place and if you don't grab it you'll never move forward!

In hurling you can't play for another county (kinda like a state in the US) under almost any circumstances. You can only play for the county you are from. There's a full on investigation if there is a hint that you are an imposter! There are very few examples of players who switch counties. Which means the players and the supporters are one. Our town, our city, our players, our tribe. This is a rearity in sport at this competitive level.
@celtickiwi294 жыл бұрын
Just remmber non of these players dont get paid..... its the love of the sport ;-) , it is the fastest game in the world, it is over 3000+ years old, and it was invented for warfare it testes every skill knowen to man .... magine you’re sprinting down a 160-yard field. As you run, you balance a tiny ball-small as a hockey puck, hard as a baseball-on the end of your stick, as in lacrosse. Except where the lacrosse stick has a woven pocket, your stick has a flat, wooden blade, and where lacrosse requires protective gear you wear neither pads nor gloves. Now imagine that your opponents are waving these same axe-like cudgels. They are coming at you from all sides, hoping to hook you from behind or block you from the front. You race down the gigantic field while considering your options. You could pass to a teammate, either with a slap of the bare hand or with a kick. No one is open, though, so you prepare to take a shot-never mind that you’re still 100 yards out from the goal. You lean back and swing hard, like a baseball player at bat, feeling the satisfying reverb in your arms as you connect with the ball........ Now imagine you’re the goalkeeper preparing to block this shot..... lol

Just so you all know, that ball is as hard as a ROCK! The stick is called a hurl and the ball is called a sliotar, pronounced like shlittar. If you were going to say hurling in the Irish language we would say iománaíocht. General rules are that you can’t pick up the ball from the ground with your hand, only the hurl and you can’t take more than 4 steps without bouncing the ball if you want to run with it. Hurling and GAA are only played in Ireland, sometimes now In Australia because so many Irish have emigrated.

Sometimes I think Americans don't know what's going on outside their own country. It's like they are living in a bubble of sorts. Irelands Hurling is one of the oldest sports in the World and when a Hurling final or Gaelic Football final is televised it can be watched in up to 45 countries.
