I used the identical method training my Cane Corso. He was 9 months when I could walk or change direction any time at any speed and he will never let the leash get taught. He’s 10 months now and gets distracted at festivals or with kids or dogs playing, but he won’t pull in crowds, but will if we get close enough to a dog or kids moving fast and speaking excitedly. He’s still getting desensitized. Whenever we’re walking, he’s constantly looking at me, next to me, and if he gets out a little in front, he knows I can change direction and it always watching and will somehow know to change direction. My small 6 year old boy and 9 year old daughter can walk him easily. You’re probably gonna make the positive only freaks have a heart attack, but who cares. This is better and safer for the dog, especially a huge powerful dominant breed like the Italian Mastiff. Respect.

@@AmericanStandardK9 People can gripe all they want about how you train dogs and how mean it is...the way I look at it, if you wait for your dog to do what you want and only reward positive behavior without correcting negative behavior, then the training you can get done in 20 minutes while talking about what you are doing versus the similar level of training by those bashing you that take 6+ weeks, I'd rather a dog yip a couple of times and get 90% of the work done in a short time. I'd rather my dog listen and walk safely with me than get distracted and pull and run in front of a vehicle or pull me in front of a vehicle while taking many weeks to teach these lessons. I love this video because this is a 4 month old puppy and the pressure is minimal and positive reinforcement is on point and you made a massive change in this dog in very short order. My puppy is a 15 pound Husky/Treeing Walker Coonhound (gorgeous Damascus (blacksmithing term) colored coat, mostly Husky markings) and she is almost 4 months old, and I need to get her leash trained.

Hi Many thanks for your reply That makes sense. What I find hard is to call a dog back when he's been distracted I've only seen it once but was mighty impressed , I'm not kern on the dog walkers who let them walk in front we have to be the alfa male i used to the a doberman , please keep up the good work look forward to seeing more . Many thanks Ram (UK)

Quick questions Ryan, do you use a prong collar and leash? Or Harness? Also, do you use a e collar at all
@ryanmalone2681
@ryanmalone2681 Жыл бұрын
@@Dogemon. Prong collar. He doesn't need it any longer because he doesn't pull, lunge, or do anything that I'd worry about the soft front portion of his neck. However, he's a big strong beast, so if I ever were to need it, I know pressure would be applied evenly and comfortably. Don't cheap out or they can cause pain and damage. Herm Springer is a no-brainer. I use a normal leash when I need him close and a 30ft for most walks in the neighborhood where he needs to be leashed, but I want him freedom to explore. I put an ecollar on him everywhere we go and love to get him off leash. I don't really use it unless I can't see him or he's too far away to hear me. I can use the ecollar to stimulate him and he will know a command is coming and find me. Then we have hand signals for distance. Took a while for him to understand not to come to me when a command is coming, but rather see what it is and do it in situ, unless of course I'm recalling him. Harness is a bad idea unless you're trying to train him to pull you around on your bike, skateboard, etc.

Mate I’ve got to say, your videos have saved our relationship with our rottie. She would lunge at cars, scooters kids on bikes. She was hyper dominant, food possessive. You name it she had it, and it was all down to how we initially trained the dog. We’d taken her to multiple trainers and rottie specific trainers in our area. None of which helped. After watching your videos ourselves, we’ve learned to be the alpha properly. And she’s currently walking with attention virtually permanently on me. No pulling, no food possession, sits on command, sits when talking to a stranger in the road. Doesn’t care about cars or people passing her. The last step now is dogs, if she can walk past dogs without any hassle she’ll be a perfect dog for us. This is all with the help, of proper Leash control using the prong, good feeding and adequate training. All we can say is thank you for the content and keep it up.

I have 3 different treats I take out with me, my method taught to me by me dad (ex-airforce) was using a choke collar on my dogs with almost identical methods, my dogs all were so well trained that when walking I had to look down to ensure the collar was still attached, now I have a 4 month old border collie and he is already doing that where I have to look down to verify he’s there, now does he get distracted sure he does, dogs birds people etc but with the prong collar he instantly snaps out of it and quickly darts back to my side. I keep watching these videos to learn more and try techniques by trainers like you so I can learn better ways, like how to use the prong collar, I’m learning even though I’ve trained dogs doesn’t mean I can’t learn new tricks too. Thank you for your video, it’s so valuable to us all, and I know what it takes to make a video, so again thanks.

His "The Perfect Walk" course covers this, but it's over 5 hours long because there's so much more to this training than can be covered in a short video. Head over to DIYK9.com or email info@diyk9.com to find out more.

This video is awesome. I recently picked up a pitbull puppy that loves to do his own thing on walks. After our first walk using this method I already see a massive improvement in his behavior. Nowhere near the level shown in the video but he isnt pulling/staring/running after distractions anymore and is more attentive to me rather than his surroundings after 2 short sessions. The way I see it, it is heartbreaking to hear him yelp but im reassuring him the whole time letting him know he is doing well in his training and i'd rather correct anything negative he could possibly do in the future when he's fully grown that would make a Karen or bystander insist he be put down for it!

Thanks for taking time to explain and demonstrate using the prong collar to assist with training a dog to overcome distractions & pulling while in public on a leash. I have a 2 year old 60lb bull terrier that can pull this 200lb man wherever she wants to take him. Working without a prong collar so far she does pretty good most of the time unless she encounters people on small wheels (scooters, skates etc).

Thank you so much for going SLOW and highlighting the pre training leading up to loose leash walking. It has occurred to us we need to take several steps backwards in training our 70 lb male Boxer. He's out of control on leash and my daughter's and I are small. Worked on some drills today in the house and walkway without taking an actual walk. I've introduced the clicker today as well and he responded well. Baby steps. I need to size up his prong collar, the last time we introduced it we dove right into a walk that ended poorly. Just getting used to it was an incredible tip! So appreciate your clear, concise explanations. So many trainers leave steps out unintentionally, and it leads to confusion and frustration.

Prong collars cause no trachea damage and if you have a dog that is causing themselves wounds with that collar you as an owner are doing it wrong. Start with a puppy and train it with a prong collar so you don't have to do more than flick it lightly for a second to cement proper vs improper with very little trouble. Kids don't like their privileges being taken away but it's necessary to teach. A 2 second light correction for a lifetime of good behavior is a very very valuable trade off.

Just started today with your u-turn training and my 6 month old toy poodle Moses is progressing already. I'm not even using the prong coller, I use a no pull collar and your training is still working! He was pulling me everywhere and it can be quite embarrassing when a small dog like that is not under command and control. Best videos I've seen so far and I've subscribed and sticking with your training skills! Thank you for sharing!!

Would you use a prong collar on a smaller dog like a mini Aussie doodle? I'm hoping to find a German shepherd mini Aussie doodle to train for high heart rate alert service dog.

@@AmericanStandardK9 Just got a 9wk Corso. At what age can I start this method, with prong collar? Now? Also she is biting the leash like a toy/game along with falling over and rolling around. Hot mess.

Is 4 months the age to introduce the prong collar, or should you introduce it earlier?

I have a mini american shepard that pulls so hard he has pulled my mother off balance because he saw a dog off leash that he wanted to play with. I swore i would never put a prong collar on him (7 months 25 pounds)... well.. i gave him snacks and got him used to wearing a 2.25 mm prong collar loose around his neck when we go outside to go potty for 4 days before i double hooked to it with his martingale collar. I had the leash he took off like a freight train to sniff a neighbors dog that was walking by with his owner and he self corrected.. he looked back and saw my butt walking the other way... he never yelped or anything but holy shit he stopped darting off. My 2 big dogs wear 2.25 mm prong collars and they walk right next to me. I only have the collars on when we go for walks. 2 big dogs walk off leash in safe areas.. not near busy roads.
