@@dsds-zx5klputting a muzzle on would just create more anxiety and stress for the dog, as it now has no way of defending itself. Let the two dogs meet in neutral territory that they are both familiar with (a park nearby for example), with a barrier between them that doesn’t obstruct vision or scent, and also things that they associate pleasure with such as toys or a liked human. No food though as this can cause food aggression even with the barrier. This is the way.

​@Presley Oaks as someone who has had a dog aggressive dog, sometimes the only way to stop it is to put them around other dogs. If the aggression is because of fear, then they will never lab not to be scared of other dog if you keep them totally seperate. Of course doing that safely and responsibly is best. If it's dominance related aggression you may need to do some training around other dogs to get that confidence up.

So i have to put a muzzle on her when walking her with out new dog but unfortunately she Is a completely different dog with a muzzle. In rare occasions, well socialized pups still turn into giant dicks. My dog was well socialized, in group training, in private training, at the park, on group walks, etc. Around age 2, he just went on an aggressive rampage. He has never calmed down, and it's been 8 years. He doesn't get to meet new friends because all the rehabbing and retraining we've done has born no fruit. He's still an ass hole. He is really great with people, at least. When we adopted kids, that went really well. He adores our kids.

I took mine everywhere with me. He got attacked and has been dog aggressive since. He's 8 now. Sometimes dogs are predisposed. Sometimes there's a situation that makes them that way. Don't assume they didn't try to socialize their dog. It's not always a simple answer.

Meeting on neutral ground has worked for me a few times when introducing a new dog to the family. That way neither one is defending their home from a strange dog. I'm lucky enough to be able to do that about a mile from my house and I walk them home together.

I used to have a very aggressive bojack (Boston Terrier/Jack Russell mix) named Duke and I wanted to get another from his mother because she had just had another bunch of pups. We took Duke and put him in the bathroom and shut the door and then put the puppy in a cage just outside the door so Duke could smell him but not see him and after letting them sit like that for about 30 minutes we took the puppy outside and put Duke in the puppy cage and let the puppy loose next to the cage so they could see each other. After a few minutes of Duke growling we took him out and I held him in one arm and the puppy in my lap. I let Duke see me pet him and be gentle with him so he’s understand he’s not a threat or enemy. Duke finally started to wag his tail and we took the final step of letting them both down together to see what would happen. Duke waddled over like a goof and licked the puppy and I knew we were good from there. We named the Puppy Chief later. Thought it would be a good pun by accident. Duke being a reference to Duke Nukem but Duke also being a position of power worked great since Duke was definitely the dominant one

Sometimes its not even that they trained the dog that way. My current pup is a rescue and had a lot of issues just barking at other dogs and trying to dominate them. Hes gotten a lot better now tho but its taken six years of refocusing him, having him go through commands, and crossing streets to make sure He knows that he cant meet every dog bcs not every dog wants to meet him. If the dog is a rescue they can be aggressive or antisocial towards other dogs and it might not necessarily be any fault of the owner. (although i will say that with this dog, if hes this aggressive with other dogs, they need to start smaller)

good advice, many people keep their dogs penned up and don't know how to give their dogs the confidence and ease of mind they deserve, more often than not they act aggressively seeing everything as a potential threat or meal, even chickens or squirrels and can't go outside without misbehaving.

True, but in many breeds, especially bully breeds, socialization does not prevent dog aggression after reaching full maturity (at around 3 year mark) because it's embedded in their genes. So while early socialization is extremely important, teaching your dog to ignore other dogs is crucial as well

Exercise, discipline and affection is what the dog needs. All in that order. Exercise the energy out of them. When tired, discipline as they are more likely to listen and stay attentive rather than trying to run (why you exercise first) and then you give ‘‘em affection saying how good they did 😂

If you already have a dog and you’re going to the Humane Society to find a buddy for your dog, they have a chain-link fence between the two dogs where they can run up and down the fence and if there is aggression that’s not the dog for you to be taking home😊

Maybe..there is a thing called "barrier reactivity" where a dog behind a fence/door/glass window will bark, snarl, amd be aggressive but as soon as you remove the barrier they stop immediately. its like a guy who is acting like he wants to fight while he knows his buddy is in-between him and the other guy and is "holding him back" only acting tough because he knows he won't actually have to fight.

The way the tail wagged is also a clue that it wasn’t a happy wag. Probably pretty hard to spot in the moment though if inexperienced (which they clearly were since they thought a face to face introduction was a good idea).

NO, NEVER through a fence. It creates fence aggression. They should both be exercised to exhaustion then meet at a mutual ground park on leads that are loose so they feel free, but can be separated easily when things don't go well

Meeting through a fence can sometimes work. It depends on how aggressive the dogs already are. When introducing the neighbor dog to our dog, we did it through the fence but started by petting and talking to the neighbor dog while our dog was held at a distance. Then, we went over and pet our dog until both were calm. Then let him go, and he went right up to the fence, happy to meet a new friend that he knew was safe because we showed him first.

You are right in that a dog should let the owner determine who is a threat and how they should be dealt with BUT... some dogs are more territorial than others, and either the yard they were in, or the human on the other end of his leash were his "territory." Also, many male dogs on leashes, with a female human on the other end, become extra protective/agressive, where they might not feel the need to protect a male owner as much. That isn't projecting a human trait on a dog, that is proven dog behavior. Also, *leash reactivity* and *resource guarding* could have been at play here. My 100 lb. akita, who was socialized excessively growing up and is great with people, is agressive toward other dogs when I'm walking her (so I keep her leashed and well away from other dogs). But when her vet or my brother walk her past other dogs, even only a few feet away, she behaves polktely. This is because she considers me her pack/territory, and she'll fight any other dog she feels is intruding. But the vet and my brother? Not so much. She gets along well with my sister's 3 Belgian Tervuren's too, provided I'm not around. The minute I walk into the yard, all bets are off, so I don't. We've worked with two animal behaviorists, and have calmed her down enough to pass another dog on the opposite side of the street without lunging, but that's as good as we could get her without using an e-collar. Some dogs are just more territorial than others.

@@DaneArcher2000 I'm in complete agreement with you regarding aggressive dogs. You have one of the top three most aggressive breeds twords other dogs. Akitas are notorious for it and protective of their human. I have owned several Pitties, Cane Corsos and rottweiler in my time. I learned early that breeds with high drive to protect required a high level of socialization and an understanding of who's the alpha in the pack. Electric collars and prong collars may seem cruel but having to put your dog down because it's attacked someone or their dog is much crueler. I have never had a dog that didn't figure out what the deal was pretty quickly. Reward the dog when it complies with the command and punish it when it doesn't. Pretty simple process. However consistently is the key.

I now have learned how to handle his reactiveness, but I wish he would be more confident into me being the leader. I thought my dog would be aggressive and after they sniffed each other they both were bouncing off of the ground tangling up the leashes playing and now he will lay down and let other dogs sniff him if he wants to play, other than that he stays at my side and sits that's how he lets me know he's not wanting to play, to be fair my dog is a lot older now. But if he is sitting next to me (checking in with me) and another dog gets too crazy or close he will start growling.

Geez that's horrible I'm so sorry that happened to Diamond. But at least it wasn't worse, if the other dog tore off her lips then it would have done much worse if there wasn't the barrier, possibly killed her. If you ever want two dogs to meet and there's a fence as a barrier you just can't let them get close enough to bite through the fence, and still keep them on loose leashes to get control if you need to. But I understand you never using the fence method again after that. I hope you're doing good nowadays 💜💙💚

Nope. Not mine. She'd eyeball sideways the whole way waiting for a sign to attack. She was a cruelty case and extremely jealous and unsecure. When my older dog died it was like a light switch flipped. She went from being a tormenting nuisance to the best dog I'd ever owned. No more competition. A vet told me not to listen to the do-gooders that pressure me to take my dog to the dog park, socialise her or even walk her. She told me that dogs really don't care about all that human stuff and they're a gift to us to make our life better not depressed and stressful. I took that advice in board and ended years of anxiety immediately. My dog ran Motorcross around the yard alone for hours each day happily by herself.

You can also have a dog that will walk past hundreds of dogs and all of a sudden there’s that one that your dog will want to attack and kill… I was told it has something to do with the pheromones the other dog is releasing and your dog picks up on it

They can tell if a dog is scared and fear aggression is very serious and hard to work thru! But I believe this dog was just protecting everything the leash was pulled tight and that was the owners fear thru the leash telling the dog to be cautious. The dog took over because he felt that he needed to protect everything including the owner. You should always have a leash on so you can separate them if needed but not tight like that. It gives the dog an insecure feeling like something bad is just out of reach… he needs a confident person on the end of the leash and some basic training wouldn’t hurt. I don’t think this dog even knows how to walk properly on a leash.

I introduced my Lhasa Paso to my Belgian malinois through a fence first for like a whole 3 days eventually I walked in there carrying the little one and letting him sniff her while he was on leash. Once I saw his attitude more calm and not so anxious I allowed them to play together. Two months later and they are the best of friends. I would also give him treats for waiting. Basically used the little dog as training for him to sit and wait. Now every time I walk her in he knows to sit and wait and be gentle when playing with her. None the less we are always there supervising their play time just to control any aggression or tough play that can happen.

Meeting on neutral ground is great advice. When bringing home a new puppy, it also helps to rub the puppy on the blankets and toys of the other dog before introducing. Also good to do activities where there is space between the 2 dogs, but they can see each other both getting attention. For example, opposite owners petting and cooing at each dog and giving treats. Eventually, they learn that if their owner thinks it's ok, then it must be ok and positive things happen when I meet new dogs. It is also important to take it slow because it's much easier to build up to a good interaction than it is to undo a bad one.

Actually letting two dogs meet on leashes can sometimes be stressful for them, but if one or both are aggressive it makes sense to leash them. The fence idea is better

I found that dogs on a leash tend to be more cautious and aggressive tho. My dog doesn't like new dogs when he's on a leash and he would get defensive, but when he meets them in open spaces like a garden he's totally chill and down to play.

Thank you for the advice. This is similar to how I have introduced new cats to our household, we use a bedroom door to start. This seems so intuitive I am annoyed with myself with not thinking of it sooner. We had a introduction go poorly between our boy and a girl doggy that came up for help to my husband at work. She did find a good home. I feel badly that I messed up having a buddy for our furry guy though.

Our male dog (American Bully) was the same, tried to get him a brother and it was a no go. A year later we got a female dog (frenchie, much smaller dog) however this time, the female dog never came into the house. I drove straight to the dog park. My husband drove our male dog and we met up. One inside the fenced dog area and the other in the outside. We’ll within an hour, they we’re walking side by side like best friends. We’ve had both now for two months and they are inseparable. Learned our lesson to do it correctly ❤

An alternative, my most successful meetings were on neutral ground( dog park), no leash (so they do not feel constrained or trapped), with use of e-collar (on higher than normal shock).

Not all tail wags are good wags. He was not happy coming out the door. And the guy talking isn't right either the only thing stopping that dog from being social is the owner not knowing proper introduction techniques. You never introduced a dog to another on his own property. You do it on multiple walks.

My dog and the neighbor dog met through chain link fence. Ran the fence together. Sniffed through the fence. Wagged their tails. Seemed good. They seemed friendly with each other. About 2-3 weeks went by all seemed good. Then They met in the front yard one day and beat the shit out each other.

I had a dog, and my dad friend dog became friends with mine pretty fast, zero aggression towards dogs that are bigger than him, He was a medium-sized puppy pitbull
