No...no...you've got it wrong. She didn't "permit" or "let" that dog hump her leg...she "ENCOURAGED" and "INSTRUCTED" that dog to do that. She likes it. Why else would she let the dog do it to completion? She's getting something out of it herself...satisfaction. She's not doing that for the dog's benefit.

Ever since I started watching your videos, I immediately stopped my routine visits to the dog park with my 10 month old German shepherd and replaced this with jogs/bike rides every night or play dates with her dog friends in a controlled environment. It’s not about how greatly trained my dog is but rather how bad other owners are with their dogs. I know my girl, but I don’t know what other owners do with their dogs!

100% I have too. I have a 122lbs rottie and when she was a baby, I'd take her to play with the little dogs. Now that she is almost 2 and powerful and extremely protective, I would never think of bringing her to a dog park. I do not let anyone touch her and do training everyday. She loves it

I was once at a dog park with my 2 dogs (border terrier & New Zealand heading dog) who both have a high prey drive. There was a couple with a very young miniature pinscher on the other side of the park so I put my 2 on a lead and approached & asked if I could introduce my dogs to their tiny dog. Once they were politely introduced I returned to the other side with my now unleashed dogs. I later had to go over and intervene because a husky was purposefully stalking the tiny pinscher and no-one was doing anything! I asked the husky owner to put her dog on a lead because he was about to harm the other (ie he wasn't playing). I was gobsmacked that the husky owner could not see what was happening and because the min pin owners did not do anything. The husky owner left in a huff but later the min pin owners did thank me and say they were unsure what to do. I think all dogs owners have a responsibility to not only keep their dogs safe but also to ensure their dogs are not a risk to others.
@BetsyRoberts-u8e

Unfortunately, most dog owners know little to nothing about dog behavior, body posture, prey drive, etc. I certainly didn't with my first dog, an AKC registered Chow Chow. Fortunately for me, he was an extremely placid, sweet, easy dog to have, albeit very stubborn at times. After him I adopted a Chow who had previously been abused and she (predictably) had fear aggression. I wanted to help her and keep her, so I tried to learn what I could about dogs from a biological standpoint as well as learning from dog trainers. But sadly, I don't think most dog owners have the desire to learn anything.

@ tessmonro7102 I agree with Garret about dog parks Some dog parks are better than others. Some even have not only a section for small dogs only and another section for larger dogs, but also (if there is enough room) two or three runs for people who have a problematic dog or who want to train their dog off-lead. Invariably problems occur (imo) more so because of the owners, than the dogs: Leaving gates open, not cleaning up after their dog, untrained, out of control dogs (some of the owners are out of control too!), the idiot who puts the "shy" (fearful) larger dog in the smaller dog enclosure. etc., etc.

Yeah. There was a couple who brought their dog to the dog park. They told me they got him recently and he’d been a stray. He also had scars on him from being attacked in the past and he was extremely reactive and jumpy to any dogs. Massive red flags all around. The dog had been through trauma. Shortly after that convo I decided to keep my dog away from him as I didn’t want a fight. He ended up attacking a different dog at the dog park. To make matters worse, I saw the same dog back at the dog park again after that incident. I told the guy he shouldn’t bring his dog to the park and he was annoyed with me but ended up leaving anyway saying he’d just come back later. Umm no sir you should not come back at all! I cannot believe the stupidity of people. Bringing an aggressive dog that has been through trauma to the dog park where they will be surrounded by other dogs and anxiety is way up is an absolute disaster waiting to happen. And then bringing the dog back again after he attacked a dog at the park! Absolutely insane

Funny that you called the Alabai a dog/polar bear mix. We recently rescued a stray Alabai puppy and named him Bear ( for obvious reasons).He basically adopted us by following us around whenever we were out, and he ended up living just outside our gate. We were pretty much the only people around who didn't run away or try to attack him in terror at his size whenever he came over trying to play. One day we opened the gate, he came in, and he never left.
@horhevamp8890
@horhevamp8890 Жыл бұрын
We have a similar story... an Alabai showed up in our neighbourhood and my father always feeds strays (lots of strays in Greece, never seen one so big before). The dog had clearly been trained but eventually abandoned and it was in a bad state. We kept feeding it and caring for it but -OUTSIDE- our yard. The dog grew to follow us around and was protective of our 2 dogs... in fact when other strays/other dogs approached them aggressively he would intervene. It would even let -our cats- hang out with it but no other cats in the area. Eventually when the vet came for ours, he managed to take a look at it. It had kalazar disease at a very progressed state and thats probably why the original owner abandoned it... the dog stayed with us until it eventually passed away. It was an amazing dog but indeed I cant imagine being on 'the other side' if it hadnt seen us as at a positive light.

I've been a kennel technician for years and do part-time training. We're the people that take care of your dog when you come to a daycare. Do not take your dog to a park, always assume you're surrounded by idiots. Dogs are like little kids, they make bad choices and will fight each other over absolutely nothing. The amount of times I have to stop fights or get involved in them is immense for owners to then say "oh my dog loves other dogs", the hell they do. Just because your dog "Nibbles" the 130+ lbs mastiff is good with your other dogs, don't mean they're good with every other dog on the planet.

Definitely! I don't take my Mastiff mix dog to dog parks. As a puppy, tried to get her to daycare, but she gets too anxious with more than 10+ dogs at once. She wasn't having it. Wanted to go back to the people 😂 Thankfully the place was responsible and said it wasn't for her. We have play dates with my friends' dogs instead. Smaller groups & they get to know each other & monitor them.

Little story with flexi leash. Family dropped by with their 2 very overweight, very undertrained great danes easily in the 200lb range. They needed to let them out for a bathroom break but were worried about my free ranging horses (i had no gates at the time) so i put the one horse close to me on a lead so they could let their dogs out one at a time on a leash and let them have their potty time safely. The biggest dog freaked out, lunged at the horse, leapt in the air aiming for the throat, extending the flexi leash to max where it then snaped out of the 140 lb handler's hand like a jet fuel powered wet eel. Kid you not, he thought it broke his fingers. Dog went straight for the throat, horse dodged and flipped around, dog's leaping arc continued over the horses back, where he came to a crashing halt via butt check on the horse's hindquarters, and got projected about 20 feet away onto his back. Had he lunged at another dog like that, they would have ended up with a very severe problem. Luckily all we got was a spooked horse and a very rattled dog and some very clear real life consequences of not setting boundaries for the dogs' owners. I hate hate hate flexi leashes And that leg humping thing .. that is beyond vile, disgusting, and depraved. Guaranteed it gets worse and a lot more personal behind closed doors. There is a very sick community out there that I wish i had never heard of.. 🤢

Dude, I hate flexi leashes too! Someone gave me my dog and she came with a flexi leash. E.Bulldog/Boxer cross! When she came, she was not leash trained and out of control. The real reason they were giving her away. Chased cats. I was tired one night, took her out on the flexi. She ran full speed after a cat, the leash snapped at the hook ring, the hook ring snapped back with the flexi and shot into my arm like I'd been shot by a BB gun with really huge BBs. I had a quarter sized bleeding one millimeter deep hole in my arm. Never again!! I started serious training. Now 10 years later and she's off leash, been on a movie set, loves cats and chickens. Still likes to try to run the ducks every now and again in their pen (she's outside of it), but she trained.

Flexi leashes are fantastic. The leash did not break or malfunction, the lock will stop a 95 pound german shepherd at full sprint, I know because I've done it. We're not ignorant, we just don't believe that more pain torture helps. Rule of thumb if you would try it yourself don't give it to your animal. Keep them on a short leash give em just a little slack with a regular harness for every walk until they don't tug anymore, they need to walk next to you and they will be most comfortable directly next to you after a while. I've done this with with all my dogs I've leash trained. I'm not a pro but I know what I'm talking about, I've done this with all sorts of dogs, mastiff mixes, st Bernards, Australian shepherds, German shepherds, Chihuahuas, pitbulls, bulldogs, And more, it's not easy but it's not hard. You just have to put in effort and trust your dog.

Slowly getting closer and watching for signs of aggression. usually, they end up extremely tired from walking and start ignoring each other until they are able to walk together. This is the first time I've seen your channel. I was pleased to hear your take on dog parks. I have found it increasingly difficult to navigate human and dog attitudes. I used to go before sunrise so my dog and I could have an enjoyable walk together and he could have a good run. I avoid these areas like the plague now.

I like the Flexi leash when I want to give my dog some space to roam and sniff without letting her completely off leash. She easily gets distracted and we are still working on a good call back. But I use a normal collar. Or, as I heard from another dog trainer, automatic leashes and especially with a harness are for dogs that already know how to be well behaved.

I hated Flexi Leashes since I was a child because I got a terrible rug burn when outside with my childhood dog a Sheltie when she saw a squirrel. She was doing what they were breed to do and I was way too young to be outside alone with her. She didn't run off thankfully. I currently use harnesses because I have two Brachycephalic dogs and collars can be dangerous for them. They don't usually pull unless it's a loud motorcycle because one wants to run away from it while the other wants to chase it because it triggers a weird prey drive in him. This is a long standing training situation with them, which they leave scooters alone and bicycles but the motorcycles are still a work in progress.

" Godfather, be my friend." Thank you for the teaching. I take care of 31 dogs now. 18 at my house inside. I forgot to count the rescued cats, but the total number is comparable. Because you have helped me I know that some day you may ask me for a service, and I also know that this day may never happen. Please let me know if I can ever help. ;) (BTW my dogs are 'sort of' trained. They are trained for my situation in my house or compound. I do not go to dog parks.)

Neighbor lady got 6 yrs for failure to control her animals in Elbert County Co after a few of her dogs went to the neighbors house and killed the woman. Take heed! Dogs cannot be permitted to “just be”. You must be in control of your animal 24/7 by whatever means necessary.

Not my schene…BUT VERY INSTRUCTIVE ! I support your way of thinking…like any relationship, a relationship with a dog will only work if you can “see” things the way your dog does, and if you actually understand…not only what he is seeing, but also his perception, his actions based on his character, as well as all the potential outcomes to a scenario. 99% of fuckups can be avoided if we actually understood…and if we cared less about social media than we do about our animals. Something we are all guilty off, myself included ! Well done and enjoyed !

I love your reactions! Straight forward and not sugar coated. Have a martingale collar on my pit/rottie/husky 8mo pup that’s 65lb.I trained her with a 25’ lead. Now for legal purposes we use a flexi leash. She really doesn’t need a leash except for leash laws certain places. But she knows she only has 12’ on the flexi.

When we adopted out pitbull (he was 2 & 1/2 at the time) we went to great lengths to teach him the difference between HIS toys amd our DAUGHTER’S toys. Not only was it very upsetting to her when he'd grab one of her dolls, but if he starts breaking off parts and eating them, that's an emergency vet visit and a possibly dead dog. Nothing about that is funny.

What suggestions are their for alternatives to dog parks? I take my dogs on long walks everyday because I live in an apartment but it's near a huge park so we spend a lot of time there. My 1 year old Shih Tzu is always wanting to run and play with other dogs, which there is a decent sized grassy field people let their dogs play. However, that usually ends up with tangled leashes, which for any dog owner is terrifying. I'm living in South Korea, where many people didn't properly socialize or train their small dogs so when those leashes get tangled it's scary because my dog was exposed to all that and I'd hate for a split moment to ruin it. I unfortunately did have that happen to my pug as a puppy, thankfully he didn't get hurt but it was seconds from a bad situation if my neighbor hadn't came running out when I started yelling because her big dogs got loss and were circling us and I had a broken arm trying to hold a 6 month old puppy knowing if I moved slightly to move away they were going to attack, but now he doesn't like to socialize with other dogs and tends to stand right next to me unless he feels comfortable with the people or the other dog. My shih tzu really did help him way more than all the professional trainers I tried to help build his confidence back up. My Shih Tzu is always showing interest in the dog park area of the park but we don't ever go in because I'm not going to put my pug in that kind of stress or myself because that itself would create a problem even if their wasn't one.

Question, im training our puppy in public manners with the prong collar and positive reinforcement. She is doing amazing. Our only concern is with potty, at our house she is house broken and asks to go outside and is starting to go on command. But when we are outside in an other place she doesnt want to go on command, and ends up having accidents inside stores (which we dont mind we just clean it up). My question is how should we correct her when she does this so she knows it is wrong to pee/poop inside other places?

Just a very unfriendly reminder: There are dog owners like me who react a little over the top when it comes to their dogs. If their dogs are attacked they don't shy away to hurt the other dog and its owner. That pitbull at 10:50 wouldn't have survived and that lady would be in a wheelchair if this was my dog.

My APBT and I were attacked by an off leash pit bull. My boy got between me and the other dog, since then he was out of control, lunging, not following any commands, I did a couple face plants and almost lost a finger. He was a gait and balance service dog. I couldn't use him. Three years of hell with this dog. Now with your videos, and e-collar and a prong collar we both are much better. He is back to basic commands and I am a better trainer. Hopefully I can get him back on his service harness and we can be a team again. Again your videos have helped us both a lot, THANK YOU!

When I got a border collie puppy I thought "Perfect! This is a trainer with a border pup!" Then he took an absurd amount of time to simply put on a collar and I started to have doubts. Although now that I have 2 dogs the border trained the other to take collars off for her so now they both wear collars that have a dog proof buckle.

We got our first family dogs when I was in high school, brother-sister combo, my parents had dogs growing up (one of which was a failed police dog so excellently trained) but outside of that we had no experience. We definitely did a lot of things wrong not knowing any better, we never trained them separately so they had severe separation anxiety, used harnesses and flex leashes because they would choke themselves out (hound-lab mixes), they were also 80 lbs each so while we could handle them individually, my giant of a dad was the only one to easily handle both at once. They were amazing dogs temperament wise and only when the male went blind did he start having leash reactivity when other dogs would try to mount him but it is definitely eye-opening watching all these videos and realizing that we definitely could have been in some of his reaction videos for the wrong reason. I think the only things we did right was exercise them well and made sure they had good vet care. I am definitely making a lot of mental notes for when I get my own dog down the road and what to do properly with them.

I go to the dog park 3 times a week but follow these rules …. Always check the park out before going in by doing a few walks outside the fence . Never not watch my dog, eyes on her 100% time. Look for the regular dogs and be cautious of newbies. No ball no treats, water at the car. I’m there for my dog so no conversation/ distraction. Stay moving and keep the recall. I keep the routine and the dog dose too. It’s the closest thing for the outdoors since we live in a dense city.

Flexi leads. I've seen plenty of them break. At work, we had a patient who spent Christmas getting their femur rodded because it snowed, they took two dogs out for a walk, the dogs ran around the owner's legs, tied them up, and the owner fell in the snow. Sometimes I use a horse lead, but keep the free end away from your feet and legs.

my dad and I took our Dogo Argentino (big ass dog) to the dog park once and a little dog that looked like a dachshund was on the other side of the fence kept following, staring, and barking at our dog (Dino). At some point they almost had a fight threw the fence since Dino got too close and the dog nipped at him. Afterwards we walked away from the fence and the other dude brought his dog to the big dog side, the whole time we were telling the guy to take is dog back or leash it up. Only a few seconds into this dog being there and he immediately rushed over and clung to Dino's ear when he wasn't paying attention. A huge fight broke out and everyone was on our side since the guy was an idiot and our dog was clearly leashed and completely calm, except we still left and won't be going back. Moral of the story, he's right, dog parks are trash

I work at a dog park bar and was hired to more or less be a middle man to help prevent any altercations and make sure owners are following the rules. We don’t allow food, treats, out side toys (we provide bubbles and kitty pools as some of the fun activities), children under 12 and we don’t allow dogs to be on leash inside the open area. All of the dogs are also registered to make sure they are up to date on vaccines and neutered/spayed (we allow intact puppies and service dogs as our only exceptions as long as they behave). I could never take my dog to a normal dog park anymore. Owners are WAAY too lax and don’t pay enough attention. My job so far has only had small altercations because of all the safety measures we put up and being able to have incident reports along with being able to tell owners to remove their dogs from the park if needed. It baffles me more places don’t have middle men, there are plenty of small altercations that could have escalated really quickly if my coworkers and I weren’t around.
