With time I've learned to admire this era of Raider football, before the move to L.A. and all the bad reputation the fans gave the Raider Nation while their stay in SoCal. I'm a diehard Charger fan too(born and raised in SD) and re-watching the 1980 AFC Championship game, you've got to admit, while the Raiders were a rough and tough bunch with enough defense when needed to harass opponents, Raider players themselves admit they were scared to death when playing the Air Coryell Chargers. The Raiders shut down the Oilers(7 pts), Browns(12pts) and Eagles(10pts) in the 1980 playoffs, but the Chargers laid 27 and should've had more for not 2 red zone turnovers. Plunkett always seemed to have a knack for having his offense score on the most busted, luck of the bounce plays during this 1980 campaign(look at the Raiders 1st TD in the 1980 AFC title game vs Chargers). I think when the Raiders escaped SD in that AFC title game, they knew Eagles wouldn't stand a chance against them in the Super Bowl.
@SingleTax4 жыл бұрын
@@05gtdriver With the exception of the 1981 season, Plunkett and the Raiders owned the Chargers in those days. An obvious case in point is their Monday Night match-up in '82. The Chargers were up 24-0 with only a minute left in the first half; the Raiders won 28-24.

Republicans for Harris Walz--and who stole my Party? Obviously I cannot see my Republican Party here; this is disgraceful; and you folks call yourself Republications? I'd wager none here even know what my party, the Republican since my Great Great Uncle, 19th President Hayes, or my Great Grandfather Republican 7 terms House Republican Everis A Hayes 1905-1919 Stood for as a Republican... 42-year die hard fan. First football game I ever watched was the '77 SB and it went from there. Silver 'N Black is coming back and I think by 2021, they'll be a force in the league once again! Great vid - brought back some awesome memories from my pre-teen years. +1

The 2021 Raiders team should watch this documentary again and again. The 1980's team had to overcome adversity and won the Superbowl. This year we have to overcome adversity again and this time history will repeat itself and we will win the Superbowl again. This is our year. This is a team of destiny. Do it for Mr Al Davis. Just win baby!!!

Perhaps Al Davis did Jim Plunkett a favor by sitting him those first two years. He had been thrown around and banged up in both New England and San Fran. By the time he got his big break, he was more than ready and delivered on the promise he had coming out of Stanford. Just a shame he beat my Eagles in the big game lol.

This is the most underrated team in sports. Nobody gave them a chance, and went out and brought home a Super Bowl trophy. To this day, the 1980 Oakland Raiders were the best team ever, in my opinion. To think they could have been playing in LA in 1980, but thanks to a court injunction, the Super Bowl trophy was brought back to Oakland. The 1980 Oakland Raiders are the finest championship team out of all-time great Raiders teams ever.
@andan046 жыл бұрын
Hall of Famers on both sides of the ball and dominance when it mattered. I'll agree with underrated, but best team ever is stretching it.
@jmarx_live6 жыл бұрын
andan04 ok I was stretching it a little. However, I still think that the 1980 Oakland Raiders can compete with the 1976 Oakland Raiders and the 1983 Los Angeles Raiders teams. I said, in my opinion, the 1980 Raiders were the best of the best in Oakland Raiders history. They came from out of no where to beat three teams to get to the Super Bowl. On top of that, they went and beat a Cleveland Browns team that should’ve won, and a San Diego Chargers team that should’ve won their game against Oakland. That didn’t happen. They went on to beat the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl XV, that beat the Raiders earlier in the season, in Philadelphia. Once more, I was there at the Coliseum in 1980. I saw it all unfold. I saw Dan Pasterini gets his leg broke in Oakland against The Kansas City Chiefs. Jim Plunkett threw five picks to lose to the Chiefs 31-17. However, after winning against the Chargers in Oakland the following week, which was week six, that was a start of a six game winning streak that brought us a Super Bowl trophy back to Oakland. Stretching the fact that the Raiders may not had a superstar player, but they got the job done when it counted.
@andan046 жыл бұрын
I envy your experience as a Raiders fan that season. You're right, it's always far more fun when your team wins and they weren't expected to. (Probably why Pats fans have seemed so joyless during this current run haha.) When the Raiders sat at 2-3 after five games in 1980, I'm sure very few outside of that locker room were thinking playoffs, let alone Lombardi trophy. Must have been a blast. I think I misunderstood your original post. I thought you meant they were the best team ever, as in NFL history. But if you're saying best team in franchise history, then yes, there's a case to be made there.
@jmarx_live6 жыл бұрын
andan04 thank you my friend. I'll say this about the 1980 Oakland Raiders. Now, if it meant comparison between 1970s Steelers teams, 49ers in 1980's, the 1990s Dallas Cowboys, or the 2000s New England Patriots teams, the 1980 Oakland Raiders rank last in all of them. However, iny opinion, the Raiders rank among the best of the best in all-time Raiders history bar none.

We got him after he got thrown off another team for fighting. We partied pretty heavy in 70, 71 and 72. # 1 small college team in the US. All juiced gangsters . We beat Miami, Florida and Fl. State. A school of 2000 students. He and alzado used to visit me when they came into Miami to play. Tooze was the # pick in the draft, first time a lineman was a # 1 pick. R.I.P John

@Gatto Di Ossa the evidence is out there. I didn't believe it at first, but when you think about and look into the history of the NFL, it would have been far better had Al Davis was given the chance to do away with the NFL. I did the research.
@markm40336 жыл бұрын
@Gatto Di Ossa my friend, the feud goes back before the AFL/NFL merger. At that time, the AFL was gaining ground and NFL players were signing to play for the AFL. The NFL and AFL signed an agreement to not sign anyone already under contract within their own respective leagues. The NFL broke the contract and started signing AFL players already in contract. As time passes, the AFL was beating the NFL and Al Davis was ready to do away with them. The NFL was losing money fast and those horse racing owners of the NFL somehow got the other AFL owners to sign the AFL//NFL merger without letting Al Davis know, and Al was the commisioner. Al Davis has fought their corruption and if Al Davis wasn't betrayed, we would have had a better football game today.
@markm40336 жыл бұрын
@Gatto Di Ossa yeah, saying 49ers says a lot. The NFL owners were all gamblers. They didn't eve care for the players and they were racist too.

Remember it like it was yesterday... I was 10 years old. 76 and 83 were absolutely awesome, but 1980 was special... Pastorini breaking his leg, Plunkett coming out of nowhere, Kenny King stepping out from the shadow of Earl Campbell, Tooz's interviews during Superbowl Week. I remember how bittersweet it was to beat the Oilers in that first playoff game. Kenny took a beating, and it resulted in Bum getting fired. The drama of Rozelle handing the Lombardi to Slick - you know it killed him. My mother worked for the rectory of a church, and her boss was Father Jim - from Philly. We talked some good-natured smack up until the Superbowl. I'll never forget the Monday after, he sent me a telegram - a HUGE DEAL back then. It said "Congratulations, Paul - the best team Won" Lester, Bob C (rest in peace), Plunk, Cliff... Rod Martin - all of my heroes. One of the absolute greatest memories of a kid's childhood. I'll never, EVER forget it.

As a Chargers fan, I have to say I'm okay with that team beating my Chargers that day. What a great group of guys! Plunkett deserved that season, didn't he?
