How to train an aggressive dog? This dog is actually very friendly to his people but when he gets frustrated, watch out! Leo has a short fuse and if you set him off it could get ugly.

100% agree. Too many people get embarrassed about their dog not behaving well and so they try to pretend that the dog isn't doing anything wrong to the point where something bad happens. To be so capable of a dog owner and yet not let your ego get in the way, so you can openly say; "My dog is not reacting the way I want and I need help." is very impressive. He clearly is an excellent dog owner who cares about doing what's best for his animal. There need to be more people like him as pet owners.

@jj4791
@jj4791 5 ай бұрын
He was TRAINED to go out of control. When the dog attacks, its because that was what was drilled into him at an early age. Clearly that trainer was a terrible, undisciplined trainer who obviously did not convey to the dog exactly WHEN or WHO to attack. I've seen dozens of trainers training their dogs to attack WITHOUT COMMAND and even against an aggressor turned "non-threatening" while the body suit dude was retreating. They literally instilled in their dog to KILL anyone with a cane, who is acting afraid and backing away, and turning to run! WITHOUT A COMMAND TO DO SO! WTF! This in conjunction with selective breeding to develop a dog that is prone to instantaneous violence in order to have a dog that can be trained to attack, and kill.

I think the opposite. She is a fool who is endangering others. Non experts have no business owning this breed and certainly not this particular dog. The trainer is great but it is not possible for him to train this couple to ever have his instincts, natural talents and experience. Basically, the owners will be able to handle their dog right up to the moment they are not-- Criminal negligence in my opinion. What I appreciate, as a dominant and reactive Dutch Shepherd owner, is you being honest with your clients when a dog truly doesn’t belong with them or their family. Too often trainers will just tell clients they need more training (money grab) versus the hard truth that a dog might not be a good fit for them. A dominant, reactive DS is a dangerous weapon. I've had shepherds my whole life and I have to say, its a full time job. If you don't own them for herding or farm jobs, and they are your housepets, you have to "make up" a job for them. For my dog max, it was herding her 20 + frisbees in the yard, collecting them in a huge stack, dropping them at my feet, and I would throw them all again. This went on for hours. Every aspect of the day was an event. In the evening she would play soccer indoors with her toys and we would work on hiding treats around the house and having her find them by smell. Its so rewarding though. They can be very happy and good dogs given the right time, attention, and environment. But environment isn't everything if you are willing to dedicate the time and attention.

OMG My GSD was exactly like Leo. The building up of frustration, the dog aggression, the being pissed off for not letting him do what he wanted to do, the redirection on me or my other dog on a walk, you name it. Looking at Leo go at the stuffed dog made me laugh as my dog would definitely do that to other big dogs (never small dogs), I called it, punking out the other dog. All of this was exactly like my dog. ALL OF IT. My dog was absolutely dominant. A police dog trainer recommended me to give him up. I’m glad I didn’t. I think the trainer didn’t know what I was capable of and how hard I’d work with him. He turned out to be the most loyal and protective dog I’ve ever had, and even protected my second dog on multiple occasions from being lost to other dogs attacking. I never encouraged him to interact with strange dogs, but living in a rural area, with loose dogs always a problem and he’d put himself between the loose dog and my husky and me, never allowing the loose dog near us. But the best thing he did, was save us from our house burning down while we slept by waking us up in the middle of the night. he never woke us up for coyotes or other types of stimulus, as he’d just go out the dog door and patrol the fence line and come back to bed, but for this fire he did wake us up. I’m so glad I never gave up on him. We took him and our husky out of the country to Europe for 3 years, and I was terrified it would just send him over the edge. Turned out to be the best thing we ever did for him. The more we exposed him to positive things, neighbors he enjoyed (including an introverted, quiet, calm little boy who adored him and he adored the little boy) to long hikes in the Alps, we kept our training and handling of him consistent but his environment just challenging enough for him to be successful. I never let random people pet him, I chose people carefully who’d interact with him. That little boy was like his zen master, kept him so calm and chill. Dogs like this do really well with chilled out people. He and his husky sister stayed at a cageless kennel while we vacationed and the kennel owner was in love with him. He turned out to be very easy to handle if you knew how to handle a high drive dog with pretty intense anxiety. But you had to be consistent and calm. I love this scatter game. I wish I knew that one when I was handling him. I did train him in search, SAR (tho he had too much anxiety for SAR as he wouldn’t go near the lost stranger but he certainly alerted faster than most other dogs, still, it was fun to train him in it). We also,did a little protection work but because we moved out of the country I stopped that training. He had quiet a bit of car anxiety his entire life, so that made taking him to training a challenge. Over the years I tolerated his car anxiety and he became less anxious in the car. He lived until he was 15.5. I had him for over 14 years. Best dog ever and he’s the reason why I’m considering a Dutch for my next dog. Great job on him you guys!

Like you, I am so happy to have found this guy! Thankfully my American (Bully XL) that I was 'forced' to adopt is nowhere near as bad as this Dutch Shepherd, but this video has given me more ways to stop his occasional aggression towards people he doesn't like (mostly those carrying things he construes as weapons....). I've come to the conclusion that he's both protective and territorial, but the ideas in both this post and the last one I watched have encouraged me to try harder to find a way to walk him safely, even though he's FAR stronger than me! I've known him since he was a puppy as he belonged to my next door neighbour, and he used to join in our morning, beach walks. He loved everybody and every other dog until..... one morning he attacked someone carrying a hoe..... Even though he was not full grown, I was barely able to grab him and hold him back - so I had to stop letting him join our walks😟. I begged my neighbour to get him neutered, and his answer was always 'yes, in the near future' - but he never did..... Nowadays he's such a lovely dog (towards me) - but untrustworthy towards some people and occasionally, towards my other dogs. Long story..... Anyway, the last two videos I've watched have encouraged me to try far harder to be able to walk him 😊. I've ordered a plastic prong collar, a muzzle and a remote control vibration collar. Fingers crossed.

And before anyone says I am cruel to not walk him 1) I was forced to adopt him, as otherwise he would not have a home 2) I have a large garden where he happily plays with my other dogs. Believe me, an American Bully XL was never a dog I would have normally adopted!

Hey, when you don't have the tool for a project, you ask for help. It's the growing up that allows people to ask for help. I know my nephew is more grown up than 50yo's because he will ask for help when he needs it. Imo Tom is a grown up because has a very distinctive knowledge on a subject, and asks for help when he needs it. It's praise for Tom. I know it sounds like I'm projecting a bit, I apologize for that.

Here's the thing about muzzles. Putting a muzzle on a dog is like emptying a firearm and making absolutely certain it's clear. Exactly! In the future when I get a dog I'll teach it to feel comfortable with a muzzle so that I can use it in case someone is scared of dogs or whatever. It's about making others feel safe. Even if the dog isn't even aggressive it can still help someone feel a bit calmer in certain situations

It’s easy for you to take a dog and boom, they’re “fixed” but you realize that’s not realistic or helpful to the owners. Also, love that you explain that there are just some things that you’re just gonna have to grind out over time. There’s not magical solution for some things, and sometimes it just takes doing the right things over and over and over again. And that you explain temperaments to them. Sometimes it’s just how this dog is and we have to accommodate the dogs personality and temperament to keep everyone, including the dog, safe. Love the easy and simple explanations of things from how the dog experiences or views something.

What impressed me about this video, is that the trainer, realised where the redirected aggression was coming from ( Frustration) and that the corrections with the e collar and the prong we making things worse, so he reached out to someone more knowledgeable with these particular dogs and then went to scatter feed. Also, he was honest to the owners and told them there is "no fix", just management in those high anxious moments..gave them the tools to deal with this in a more humane way. I like that he realised his usual methods were not suitable for this particular dog and was willing to change it up completely. Well done!
