Yes, it always baffles me that this seems to be a permanent problem for dog owners in the U.S. Here in Germany that sure does happen too, but 95 out of 100 people ask beforehand and accept a simple "No, sorry" without complain. For me it's like going up to someone with a holstered gun, taking it without asking or knowing if its locked and then complain when I shoot my foot.

I second that idea. You would not believe the amount of people that come up and pet my guide dog. I even have a sign on the Harvest that says not to but they ignore it. It makes me angry. Parents don't teach their kids how to react around dogs and the parents don't know either. I have had a little kid walk up and wrapped her arms around my dogs neck and kiss her on the nose. It happened so quickly, before I could say anything, thank God my dog didn't bite the kids face off. I really got on the parents heart about that and they thought I was just being ridiculous. I hope to God that kid doesn't get hurt someday and some dog doesn't get put down because of the kids stupid actions.

i just gotta say thank you for changing the whole dynamic between my german shepherd and myself. he used to pull on the leash very reactive towards dogs and people. which turned out to just be due to insecurity. i implemented the herm sprenger prong collar and it gave me the opportunity to correct him and also have him pay more attention to me so he would see how i react to other dogs and people and it gave him unyielding confidence and helped his work ethic alot. hes much more snappier into all commands and doesnt react whatsoever to other dogs or people and thats after only using it for 3 15 minute walks and i dont even have to use it anymore at all. its truly amazing how well he responded and its sad to see another german shepherd not get such results. i even tried the collar on to make sure it didnt pinch or hurt and just like Tom says it evenly applies pressure all the way around and i couldnt even pull it hard enough to make it hurt at all. i hope other people have the same results with their dogs truly was a miracle for us. one bit of advice is NEVER get a dog you cant physically handle and dont get emotional with your dog when they dont do well think objectively and it will change everything.

Alot of GSDs are insecure...It comes from them being so super sensitive to our energy....If they don't have strong leadership....the insecurity issues start.....So glad you're dog is doing so much better!!. GOOD JOB !!!

@@kayeff8415 unfortunately i think that license would have to be damn expensive, ive known people that went out and dropped 2-3k on a puppy just to have to rehome them later. i wish there was a sure-fire way to regulate it. at the end of the day a potential dog abuser or poor owner will always be able to get their hands on another dog. i adopted a cream colored long haired dachshund that someone bought for 2k just to beat him and make him live out of a garage with no yard its horrible, all we can do is adopt and volunteer.

Love that you told the owner to TELL people not to touch Athena. I taught my grands starting at an early age to never run up to any dog. Always to walk and to ask, from a respectful distance, if they could pet the dog. I also made sure that I was with them until I felt I could trust them to do this on their own. I would also love to see a follow up or get an update as to how things are going!

My son loves dogs and I taught him from when he could walk that you do not pet other people's dogs. If the dog wants to be petted they will come to you. We've always had dogs and I don't let strangers pet mine.

You were right on point regarding your statement about trainers. As a handler of several GSD’s and a member of several obedience dog clubs as well as being a trainer, many obedience/rally trainers are unable to address behavior issues with reactive dogs, fearful dogs, dogs that resource guard their handlers, etc. On the other hand, there have been some that go out of their way to help.

I started using a 280C, pager only at this time, three days ago overlayed with "leave it" associated with his leash reactivity towards other dogs....WOW....you can see the light switch has been flicked and he's finally realizing that he doesn't have to react. That was a tough one. It is always hard when dogs are unpredictable. I had a beautiful German Shepard that had some issues with that. It is hard as an owner not to be a little uneasy knowing the dog can react that way. She (the owner) was doing great. Very hopeful for them and would love to see a follow up on this one.

It sucks how unregulated dog training is. All of the trainers in my area are positive only and would never, EVER use an e-collar or prong collar, or anything like that, even on a dog like this. I have that experience here too. The trainers use treats only. No leash operation, no negative commands, no prong collars, no Dogtras, no nothing. And then the very reactive dog advances a little to a point and then stops. No progress after that for the dog. I continued with prong collar and Dogtra and got better results and we are going forward.

No need for regulation.. just do more research into what these people are specializing in. Someone who does agility all day every day has little to no experience with aggressive dogs - because aggressive dogs usually dont end up doing agility. Obviously thats not someone you would want to pay 100s of $/€ - for whats essentially something they know nothing about. Its like giving a regular electrician a job of programming something, its the same "field" and you have to know a bit of both to get the job but it certainly doesnt mean hes good at it :D My 2nd point is, how would you regulate dog training when I can just go to the park, gather some people from my area (fb groups etc.) and just train their dogs?

people are too damn emotional the prong collar changed literally everything for my dog and i. he used to be reactive towards dogs n people and it was all insecurity, a little protectiveness. i used the collar 3 times on 15 minute walks and dont even have to use it anymore it gave him unyielding confidence because he payed attention to how I reacted to certain situations so now he doesnt pull anymore or act aggressively towards anyone. his whole work ethic changed much snappier into commands and his body language is just pure confidence and happiness.

And all the trainers near me “specialize” in obedience/behavior but all of them are positive only. Which okay, might work for some dogs, but my basset hound for example could care less about positive reinforcement 😂 And I would venture the majority of people looking for a dog trainer don’t even know what to be looking for in a trainer - by the time they find out, they’ve already dumped a bunch of money into a no good trainer

This makes me want to cry, my pup is EXACTLY like this and the fact you were willing to try and handle her and how u react when she tried to nip is just amazing and so many trainers would just push them away. The unexpected nip is what we’re trying to work on the most because I can see our pup wants to be out and play with people but it’s just the unexpected that we don’t want to risk even with people who aren’t afraid of our dog at all, we’ve gotten really lucky in that aspect of our friend group

I have 2-dogs. A goofy happy boy that just wants you to jump up and down and wave you arms and play as rewards. He never needs correction. My other pup, is a heeler mix and needs structure. From my own rescue and training experience, I worked with dogs that no one believes was saveable. They all, every one of them were not only saveable but completely transformed. Sometimes it took months for what I called the PTSD symptoms to diminish , triggers lessened over time, but it was all about going slow, building broken trust, and never giving up. My GSD that I adopted 6 months ago was just like this! Lucky for me I was able to find balanced trainers that really knew what they were doing. They got her confidence up and now she's fully off leash trained!! It's so frustrating that the first trainer told them that this can't be fixed. Just because that trainer couldn't fix this issue doesn't mean that it can't be fixed.

I had someone (not a trainer) try to tell me that my reactive dog was aggressive. She often barks and growls at strangers and other dogs but if allowed to interact, just wants to play or be petted. I think that having a dog sitter for her when she was a puppy who was inappropriately punishing her lead to this. I didn't know what was going on until my kid started being there and seeing what was going on and telling me. As a GSD her herding instinct is very strong and that's the only biting issue we ever had. She would get excited and grab hands, or butts or whatever she could reach. She's almost 10 now and the only issues we have left are some reactivity when seeing non-family dogs out on a walk or people, along with front door barking.

Brilliant as always, GSD's always seem to be a difficult pet dogs, always reactive. I attended a reactive dog group and every other dog was a GSD other then my lab mix, a dobie and a doodle and there was more then 10 of us.

I have a GSD who was very reactive when I got him (attacking things coming up to the car, barking at people, being super dominant with other dogs), but I worked with him just a little and corrected this behavior and he is a total baby around other people and dogs now. A lot of people want a big, strong dog with high drive like a GSD, but they don't want to put the work in to make sure they're properly led. You cant be meek with one, and you also cant be heavy handed with them, as many are very sensitive. It seems like a lot of people who get them don't really understand the breed or what they need in order to feel secure. They are protective dogs, but if you don't teach them when they need to relax, they wont know. As my dog is now he is the easiest dog I have ever had or even seen. He's super relaxed all the time, turns off indoors and listens outside. It just takes work and understanding.

A big problem with GSDs, (and rotties, and dobies, any "guard" type dog) is that backyard breeders often mistake fear reactivity as "protectiveness". Chronic insecurity and fear reactivity have a major genetic component, especially when a puppy is raised in a normal household and even attends puppy classes yet comes out of puberty inexplicably terrified of everything. GSDs have been painfully overbred for decades and aside from BYBs and puppy mills happily breeding neurotic dogs, lots of people seek out working line GSDs thinking they'll be naturally better behaved or healthier than average but they're often way too much for a pet household. I like GSDs but there's an extremely short list of breeders I would even consider for health and behavior reasons. And it pains me to say I would probably never adopt one from a shelter because it's nearly guaranteed to have serious problems. It's sad to see inexperienced but well-meaning people like the owner in this video who clearly wants to do activities that any well-bred GSD should excel at, yet the poor dog has the nerves of a wet sock.

@@Phorlakh GSD's from good breeders here in the UK aren't too bad shockingly, but the amount of people that will happily get a cheaper dog from gumtree and complain about it later is awful. Its strange at my reactive group class, almost every dog was a GSD but no two looked the same other then two working line GSDs that were really badly reactive. There was one "classic GSD" that was definitely BYB and 100% would have bit and meant it. I mean my dog is just a mongrel and a very unhealthy one at that so I tend to try and not judge any dog but at least I bought a mongrel knowing it was probably going to be geneticly unstable, now he's had training he's actually pretty good, he is now just unhealthy.

​@@TeenyTheOne The future of dogs as pets is pretty bleak unless we humans start using the tools available to avoid the common problems. Even mixed breeds can be unhealthy, but purebreds are doomed unless there's a huge paradigm shift in what we consider "pure". There's an interesting group called "The Functional Dog Collaborative" that acknowledges that the vast majority of dogs are destined to be housepets, and instead of focusing on purebreds where the standard to keep them healthy is so onerous, they want to set up breeding collaboratives where people with health and temperament tested dogs of all types can join up based on what they want. There could be collabs for different sizes of dogs, or energy levels, or specializations like sports or hunting. The goal is to breed healthier dogs that will succeed in the home, tailored to what people actually need. It's an interesting way to approach it, I think.

People with the better way of thinking are getting squashed and drowned out by the masses who are following the Stilwells and doodle lovers of the world. I can't even take my dog for his routine blood tests with his prong on because it turned into a 30 minute debate with my vet in the waiting room in front of two other clients.

I rescued my first dog and I had no clue what I was getting myself into I rescued a lab Belgium Malinois and it was terrible when he reached 5 months and I started to watch toms videos and it saved me from giving up now he’s just a very energetic and playful and friendly dog without Tom idk what would happen if I didn’t find ur videos Also Tom he would look beautiful in a no bad dogs e-collar❤️👌🏻

love this video! it is so sad that some trainers tell people that the only option is to put a dog down, like WHAT! that makes no sense at all. there truly are no bad dogs, there are just some dog handlers that need a confidence boost, and I love that you do that with these handlers! It's always bittersweet watching how far the sharing of information have come in the past 5 years. I had an extremely dog reactive dog. She was an American Eskimo (standard). Not a single trainer would help me because they either didn't want to work with a case they might fail at and no one took it seriously. If I had half of the information I had back then, it would have been so manageable. Thanks for sharing.

I started to study dog training to help my own dog but now you have inspired me go to the branch of behavior modification. Im studying mechanic engineer but helping a dog have a happy life its much more rewarding than making money. I will continue my career but one way or another I will have a training facility as a side job.

Once again great content! I love that you mention trainers can be great at their chosen sport/etc but not always at behavioral. Too many are quick to say that a dig is no good and should be euthanized because they don't understand behavioral training. One "trainer" in my area got rid of a young Mal they had (6 or 7 months old). I have consulted with Forrest Micke for my younger Mal as she has dog reactivity since we were attacked by 4 dogs on a walk when she was 5/6 months old. Why would I let a trainer help that got rid of their young dog instead of training it?

We've been struggling for awhile with our shepkita, he is the sweetest dog but he's reactive (mostly because he wants to be pet everyone since we made the mistake of letting him play with everyone as a puppy). Thanks to your videos we've made so much progress with his heal in just a week. It really does help that we had good communication- but you taught us how to properly apply using a prong and have helped my boy and I enjoy our long walks again! I have so many clients who have been told by their other trainers, groomers friends and family, and even vets (without actually finding a health issue that would cause it) that their dog needs to be put down, when that wasn't at all the case. Especially lately, I've seen a lot of reactivity, anxiety and fearfulness.
