Same!! It was through e-collar training that I got my Australian Shepherd off-leash trained at 7 months old in about 1-2 weeks. To be fair, he already had a very obedient and attentive temperament, but with the addition of a little e-collar training, I felt comfortable putting away the leash. It's so nice not dealing with the hassle and stress of leashes anymore (minus the few areas they are required, of course). I will be an e-collar user for the rest of my life with dogs!

E-Collars are a godsend. They are illegal where I live (prong collars too), and highly frowned upon. I got one anyways (about a year ago), and using many of your videos to learn about them, and it has turned my dog (Staffy/shar pei mix) into an absolute gem. Hi Tom. I realize you have a ton of people messaging you but I hope you see this. I have done the conditioning of my GSD/Husky SD over the span of about 6 weeks. My method was to show the dog the collar then reward for about a week or so once or twice a day at the same time of day. The next step was to put it on the dog, reward, leave it on for 15 to 20 min while doing on leash work then remove it twice a day for a week. During this time i did the occasional vibrate or tone when off and reward. She reacted very well to it. I learned the hard way how tight the collar has to be for the sensation to get to her skin. On top of this, going by recommendations i have researched (a lot of videos including yours) I tried at a level 5/6 on a bousnic collar only to find that it hurts her. She yelps at that level. I very carefully move her hair out of the way to make a good contact but find that a level 1 or 2 gets a significant reaction out of her. For this I am working on the vibrate for a recall which is working ok. I am continuing to work with her with the sensation and im using that part for a recall when she is very distracted (I still have a bunch to do with her on that). Is it normal for some dogs to have an extreme reaction at that low level. I have tried it at a 10/12 for the extreme distraction (once only) but her reaction is a very loud yelp and cower which I really do not like. I am going to be implementing the bungy cord update to the click collar and im considering the other 'extended' contact leads we see on amazon. Thanks

Good video. Tom is great. I bought his E-collar program and it is well done just like the video. Though I am having some issues with the one dog who is very nervous. We started training outside and had more distractions so I turned it up a bit but maybe too much so now he just shuts down and is miserable whenever I put the collar on him. Unfortunately haven’t got too much customer assistance but this video and all the comments encourage me to keep trying. I got it because they are super reactive to other dogs and very prey driven and if I’m walking them together they completely lose their mind. I’ve tried slip collars and prong but they still go at it. I’ll keep watching Tom’s great videos and keep at it. I was encouraged he took the long line off. They both seem to stumble over it when training and the nervous one doesn’t trust it at all. Took me a while for him to even get used to it enough to train.

Using electronic collars to reasonably regulate the behavior of dogs can help train dogs and correct some bad behaviors of dogs. Similarly, professional and standardized electronic collars will not harm dogs. Sometimes you can try to use electronic collars and other related products to help you train your puppies.☺☺☺

Tom, another fantastic video! Regarding the Dogtra e-collar levels, it may be necessary to adjust them depending on the dog, the distractions, or the situation to regain or break the dog's focus from external distractions. For instance, recalling dogs with a particularly high prey drive may require higher levels. This is ofcourse after conditioning.

It wasn’t a multifaceted tool like you have. It definitely had a stinging sensation as I tried it on myself. Wasn’t pleasant but I turned it up just enough. I probably had to use it 3-5 x over the course of 6 months and she became the best off leash dog. I wish I had known about these collars at the time but either way I believe it saved my dogs life. And I did walk her on leash mostly, this was only when she was in certain areas. People who abuse animals, I imagine, that most have other ways in which they harm them, POS’s.

I always thought shock collar where the worst until my dad's friend who was a trainer explained it and showed it to me. I then trained my older chocolate lab, her sister and my dads 2 germans shepherds to understand it and I was able to off leash walk all 4 of them together. I used to go hiking with them and it was such a life saver. I recently adopted a German shepherd/husky mix and i trained her as well and I am able to off leash walk her anywhere and everywhere and everyone who sees is is completely mind blown at how well she is and that I never have her on leash. They always comment that they wish there dogs would be able to do that and they think I'm magical or she's just a super amazing dog (well both of those are true 😂) but the e-collar is what made it all possible. Now I just adopted a puppy yesterday morning, he walks off leash and follows me as it is since he's so young and just wants to be around me but I know once he's older and has more control of his own mind and goes into that "teenager" phase, I know the e-collar is going to allow that fully and condition him for a lifetime of excellence.

I still don't think it's needed for every dog off-leash. Like I've mentioned before, after 9 years of dog walking off-leash, I would say only about 5 dogs needed the e-collar.The other ones totally always came back when I called them. I also used the long leash when training puppies and found that best for the same reason you mentioned - giving the illusion of being off-leash without actually being off-leash.

@AnimaTriste5 ай бұрын
So what, if it is not needed. It's a wonderful new technology capable of transmitting the RIGHT and NEEDED information to the dog through space in the right time. I does no harm to the dogs, if used right. Why do people think, that it is preferrable, that the dog hits the end of a 20 yard long leash, after going for another dog or an animal? Everybody should learn to use it, even for the most sensitive dogs, because if used right, even they prefer it. Dog trainer for decades here. Best invention after the dog leash.
@melodieramsay6555 ай бұрын
@AnimaTriste I'm not saying anything negative about the E-collar - I just myself don't think it's needed for every dog off-leash. As a dog walker, walking 6 dogs off-leash every day, there is also no way I could control all of them with each wearing e-collars so I had to have the knowledge that they respected me as their leader and came when I called with no exception.
@AnimaTriste5 ай бұрын
@melodieramsay655 I walked even more dogs off leash. And some of them would go after each other throats if I'm not present. That the dogs must respect you goes without saying, and you have to work it until there. But... I know that you like to think that you are special, but dog walkers in particular don't have experiences with real difficult dogs. I know the clientele, they don't care about their dogs. Normally, they don't train them and even hire someone to take them for a walk. But that's not the point, either. The point is that it should be used with EVERY dog because it can learn faster, more humane and efficient until it respects you.

Tom, off topic but I wanted to get the type of elevated dog bed you use. I followed to your Amazon link and It says max weight 85lbs. Can you lead me to one that can handle a 135lb Rottweiler made with safe chemicals. Thanks for your training videos, they’ve been a huge help.

Do you use the remote to go to dog parks? Does it works there? My dog loves going to dog parks and playing with other dogs, I’m wandering if this will work if another dog gets aggressive with him (my dog never have had a fight but he’s a year now and I’m afraid at some point he’ll get into one). Ps: in the area I live the only way to have my dog off leash is if I’m at a dog park

So I was going to start training my dog with an e collar but my wife without knowing blasted her on high one time when she was going nuts at our fence line and now she’s afraid of the collar and won’t move with it on. How do I fix this. My wife felt horrible btw it was an accident

Would the collar still be effective on a level 4 with a long/two coat dog like a Malamute?
@alaskanaussiefurguson5 ай бұрын
That would depend on a few factors: 1. BOTH contact points must touch the skin, so if you don't have contact points that can reach through the thick coat to the skin, then even the highest level will never be felt by your dog. 2. Every dog needs a different level. It simply depends on how physically sensitive they are. A sensitive dog will respond to a 4, but a more physically tough dog (like mine) might need a level 25 before they even notice it. So, if you have good contact with the skin and a sensitive Malamute, then yes, a 4 might work. In my experience, though, Malamutes are very tough and stubborn, so I would not be surprised if they need a bit more than a 4.😅

Does the collar have that noise which I like I hope so. I’m sure it must because how could he be doing it if it’s not included in the collar
@WollongongSkyWatch5 ай бұрын
the noise is not part of the collar. the noise is to demonstrate to us viewers when he is activating the collar to recall the dog. watch some of his older videos.
@watchmoivies1235 ай бұрын
Oh, but I love the noise because that tells me exactly if I’m on queue about giving the dog the stem at the correct time. How did he do that? I would do that myself. Is that something hard?

I have an e collar and my Aussie could care less. Could it be the fur is in the way for him to feel it? Trust me it does work cause I put it on myself. I've tried vibration and shock and all he does is shake his head and continue to not listen, he is 5 months old

Does he know the commands before you introduce the collar? If not, try the videos from this channel about this puppy's earlier training.
@alaskanaussiefurguson5 ай бұрын
It sounds like he may not understand what to do in response to the sensation. When I trained my Aussie at 7 months old, I would apply gentle stim while pulling him towards me on a long-line, and then stopped the stim when he committed to coming all the way to me, and gave him a treat when he reached me. After a few repetitions of this on the walk, I would apply the stim without leash pressure, and he would turn towards me all on his own and come to me for his treat, because he remembered that's what I've been guiding him to do after he felt it. At that point, I started to say "come" in conjunction with the stim, until I noticed he would respond to the "come" command before I hit the stim at all. Nowadays, he responds immediately to "come" off-leash, and if he happens to be too distracted or too far away to hear me, I apply that stimulation again and it snaps him out of his distraction to come running. Usually he works at 35, and I've never had to go higher than a 45 to snap him out of something, but every dog is different. Once your Aussie is reliable with recall ON a long-line, THEN you can start working off-leash. My guess is you went fully off-leash too quickly, and your dog doesn't understand the communication you're trying to give through the collar.😅
