Malamute owner here. Forget what other people say. Be proud of the progress you're making with your dog, I assume it's a husky? That's no easy task. Give yourself some credit. Huskies are no joke. And do not only be proud of your dog, be proud of yourself as a leader and as a human. For our dogs sense these types of things and makes them more confident or insecure respectively.

I never understood why dog trainers kept saying that loose leash walking and heel are the building blocks to stopping reactivity until I started drilling the exercises myself and saw just how much my boy progressed! @@tomdavisofficial I’ve had many dogs, lots of different breeds. Our GSD is 15 months and is on her way to being a well adjusted happy well behaved dog. We dont assume what worked with our other dogs will work with her, each dog and breed is different, and training has to be tailored to each dog’s personality. Having said that, your videos are the key to understanding OUR dog and her needs and abilities. We have become better owners and it shows in her. Thank you so much for making this content available.

I think i just learned the most critical piece for my dog walking expectations. It was my "ah ha moment" when i heard Tom say that leash walking is done in three stages. Why didn't i realize that i can't take a sniffy, happy-go-lucky dog out on a walk with very little leash training and expect him to know to walk behind or beside me after a few leash pops and a couple of redirections. I wouldnt expect my child to know how to ride his bike along a bike path without first teaching him bike riding safety. Then practicing A LOT till he's comfortable and confident. Then I'd teach him bike riding etiquette and awareness of others. It all just made sense. I was getting so frustrated with myself wondering what techniques i was doing wrong. It wasnt the technique, it was that we needed to practice without distraction, and progress to where my dog was competent and able to be successful. It feels so good when it finally clicks. Now i have one more mental tool in my tool box to help me stay calm, patient, and to continue to persevere even when my dog seems like he'll never understand what im asking of him. We just have to learn how to best communicate with each other. And all dogs are different, just like all children are different! Communication and patience has always worked best for me!

This was awesome!! Really shows that all it takes is a little bit of time and effort to make the experience with your dog better. I always get comments of “oh he’s so well behaved” or “is he a service dog?” And it’s funny that people think they can’t achieve that with their own dog but they can! Thank you so much Tom and your team for making this world that much better, and bringing people together!

wow, I cannot express how much we would love to win a training session! Our guy came into our care when my dad unexpectantly passed just two days after his birthday in July '21. Within a week of getting home from our 2200 mile journey, he had a seizure. Many many vet visits, medications, insurance, etc and we are just trying to do the best we can for him.. In our minds, that includes training, and since I know he has an affliction for lunging, growling, barking at dogs, small animals, kids and people in general...I know a training refresher would def help. Anyways, love your videos & thank you so much for posting!!

To say your videos are helpful would be an understatement. From the techniques and equipment you use, to understanding what is causing the dog’s behaviour is a game changer. My 1 year old Norwegian Elkhound was very anxious from the moment we brought him home at 9 weeks and he then turned aggressive with one of my other dogs which is when I discovered your videos. Incorporating the mental training has transformed his personality a ton. The heal is still very much a work in progress when on walks but I now know that there is a light at the end of the tunel!

The one thing I haven’t found any trainer ever cover is how else a dog should walk on leash when not in heel. How you do teach a dog to walk on leash without pulling when they aren’t in the heel position? The most common problem I run across is the dog starts off okay on a loose leash but they slowly start pulling more and more when they figure out they don’t have to be in the heel position until you have a tight leash. I correct them but they aren’t in the heel position so pretty soon they will go back to pulling again. So how do you train a dog to not have any tension on the leash when not in heel and not as engaged with you as normal? If I’m going on a nature walk how do I get my dog to understand they don’t have to be beside me but they shouldn’t be pulling either. I saw a little bit of it with your English Bulldog video but not enough to truly understand how to teach this.

You can simply add a second command just for loose leash walking without a structured heel. The reason no one makes content on it likely is because most people just want a nice loose leash which is exactly what the heel can do.

I adopted a Pit/Shepherd last year to train as my next detection/search & recovery K9. I'm also hoping to get involved with competition obedience and other dog sports with him. He is insanely high drive (which is what I needed/wanted) but, I'm dealing with issues that I never experienced with my other SAR dogs and that are beyond my wheelhouse. I stumbled upon your channel several months back, while in the middle of our second time through a basic obedience class... after paying $180 to a HORRIFIC obedience "instructor", I came to realize that your videos have been more beneficial than anything we learned during our 14 weeks of hell. Aside from learning how not to train a dog, the only thing gained from the group class was a few friends, whom were also extremely dissatisfied with the instructor. I was able to share the link to your channel with them and they have found your videos incredibly beneficial. Thank you for all that you do to help dogs and their owners. Your positivity, patience, and knowledge are valued and appreciated more than you can possibly imagine.

Thank you so much for all of your videos and hard work that you and your team do. My pup for all my knowledge and the whole of KZbin, can’t seem to help him ease up on anxiety. I’ve done kennel training, not greeting him or anything when coming home or leaving and rewarding him where appropriate. He just can’t stand it when I or my partner leave. He's not destructive. But as he is going on three now... It's just not healthy for him. He gets exercise via walks, hikes and chasing a laser pen. Eventually I will figure out how to help him with this, but your videos have contributed so much to helping me understand how to be a better human to my pet. Thank you.

I have been following your videos from a very long time. The method you use and just the simple understanding of what the dog actually feels and thinks makes a big difference in understanding and training them correctly. I have a fearful dog that I have been training using your method. He gained a little confidence but still long way to go.

I have a 6 month old puppy and his mama. She is always in protection mode because of her puppy. Pulls on leash, ready to attack any other dog. Good with people though. She just doesn’t like other dogs. My puppy is great on the leash and very friendly. I like your style!

Please pick me! Of all the KZbin trainers out there YOU have the most easy to follow instructions. Best video on leash training right here. Will try on my one yr old terrier... she's such a hunter and will chase everything that moves. Thank you for this!

Thank you so much for the information!! I started caring for a pyrenees mix when a young man no longer had a place to live with him. I quickly learnt why no one in his family would take him in and been working on leash training, resource guarding and general socialization. I have never dealt with a dog who has so much anxiety and outburst. I can tell wearr slowly building trust as we continue daily practices

I have 2 dogs now, one that I was my mothers that just passed away a month ago. I couldn't give her up. I have pulling issues with my dog and always tugging back. I will try these exercises and hopefully it will be a success. I always go walking with both dogs at the same time. I feel guilty taking one out and not the other. Wish me success. Hopefully I can receive your training in the future.

Thank you. Heeling nicely is our biggest problem. Cannot seem to get it done properly. Breaks are just pulling to end of leash. In house good, on porch good. Muddy and snowy fields are all we have presently. Transitioning is lacking finesse.

I'm going to pick up my puppy of 4 months next week. I'm sooo happy, I've watched your videos for years now. I've helped train some dogs. And now I finally get to have my own. All your knowledge and inspiration have helped me really be aware of how to handle dogs. So thank you so much Tom. This video helped me again. I'm also thinking of joining the no bad dog club, but first things first. The puppyyy 🥰

I adopted 3 years old cane corso last year. He improved significantly with leash walking but still pulls little bit when he sees other dogs. This video will help me to correct some mistakes I make when I walk him. Thank you.

Thank you for breaking it down into smaller steps... our dogs run free for most of the time, inside and out. I never thought to walk them on a leash inside my house and then take them out into the yard for step two. I would get frustrated when they would pull after we left the doorstep, even though i had them sit and wait for me to start out.

This video is great and the content is presented with "normal dogs" that really need the training, not just showing the instruction on a dog that is already trained. I have watched several of Tom's videos and just ordered a Herm Sprenger prong/pinch collar for our 17 lb. mini-AussieDoodle that is having control issues whining/barking/pulling (not aggressively) when seeing other dogs while walking or at our classes. Tom, if we can correct this problem and keep her from finding/chewing things around the house, she will be perfect. Hopefully your lessons will lead us to a very happy dog and very happy owners. Thanks.

I would truly treasure a class with upstate canine!! My boy Blaze is 11 months now. Training to be my service dog. He is very patient and waits at the door and for food but he is having trouble with impulse control to dogs and people. I’ve struggled to find good dogs and people with whom to get practice. I guess that’s why he is best outside of those situations. In a mall he is amazing. Calm, quiet, rests when asked and ignores food on the table in the food court. He is learning well…. I just haven’t done enoug yet.

Love this! We’ve mastered level 1 and 2 but my puppy is struggling with level 3. He’s the stereotypical golden retriever and is overly excited to see people and dogs. Just making sure we slowly build neutrality around people and dogs.
