The basic obedience training fixed 90% of what I thought of as problems - reactivity and excessive barking. After 5 sessions with a trainer, and some practice, my 11lb ball of fury gets compliments all of the time in public for being so well behaved.

Thank you for putting this information out there. Anyone who thinks that they want a dog should go through a handling course, and learn what it takes to have a well behaved dog-BEFORE GETTING A DOG. This would cut down, in substantial amounts, the number of dogs in shelters.
@StarkK9Academy13 сағат бұрын
Shelters could require proof that a person had a handler course, a License To Own certain dogs.
@TheSitious11 сағат бұрын
It would cut down on the major epidemic of dog aggression as well.
@TheSitious11 сағат бұрын
@@StarkK9AcademyWhile I agree this would be a great idea, it's not ideal at all. Shelters struggle enough with getting dogs adopted out to good homes and families. Requiring people to take that extra effort just to adopt a dog would only encourage people to go out and buy a puppy from a breeder instead, and lead to an increase of dogs being euthanized in shelters.

@@soiltart LOL thats funny. No I dont my husband believes that if you baby a dog he will love you more. I've tried to tell him thats not possible. That dogs will take advantage over weaker people. or that they consider weak. He hates it when I correct our dog. "dont hurt him that way", Hes not hurt! He's learning how to stay out from under my feet. I'm a 75 yr old woman and our dog is the hugest red heeler I've ever seen. He must weigh some 70 lbs, and I'm getting more and more frail. I can't even hurt our dog. Had two botched shoulder replacements and its made my arms so weak If I hit our dog, he thinks I'm petting him. I get lots of exercise, but it doesn't seem to help the loss of muscle in my arms.

I have a 10 month ACD who unfortunately had multiple bad experiences with off leash dogs that attacked him along with kids and adults who screamed and ran at him when younger. Where I live people really don't understand or care about dogs. Despite my warnings and his patches on the harness and his own barking people and kids still come at him or aggressively behind us. They literally don't care. We live in a townhouse courtyard so that is a lot of people and access points. Finding a safe place to work with him outside to try to get use to people/kids and dogs on a daily basis is seemingly impossible. He is highly aware of his surroundings and trusts no one he doesn't know. His basics are good but his fear will take him from 0 as he walks at a heel with me but as soon as he sees one of the triggers the only thing he cares about is it going away. He never returns to zero after a trigger and if any other trigger happens after that his reaction is quicker and more reactive than the last. I have built up his confidence on several things but people around here seemingly make the big ones impossible to improve. It is insanely frustrating.

I use to help agitate police dogs in training. I've also trained dogs and won metals doing it. I learned a long time ago that dogs catch on to actions a lot quicker than they do to voice. thats if you talk a lot. If I tell my dog 'lets go' he knows what I mean. If I say 'NO' he knows what I mean, or if I say 'YES" but I don't babble to him. I lead him by his collar, and most of the time he's busy looking around us. Dogs like to have their own time to think and notice without constant interruption just like we do.

Can you give an example of holding a dog accountable ??? I understand the concept but not the application.
@TheSitious11 сағат бұрын
A good example is when you tell your dog to come and they don't come, so you go grab them by the collar and drag them back to where you were standing when you issued the command. Part of training a good recall is to ensure your dog knows there are consequences for choosing not to come when called. It's better done on a lead so they aren't running away from you in a silly game of tag.

Thank goodness. I've had enough experience through my 10 years of dog walking plus 13 years of fostering that I don't do these things. I've also learned from watching videos like yours and Cesar Millans about the best ways to work with dogs and it's definitely not through babying or baby talking to dogs. They don't understand and they don't respond to baby voices. I don't understand why people don't treat their dogs like their children. They certainly wouldn't, or at least I hope they wouldn't coddle and baby their children but teach them boundaries, rules and consequences, so I don't get why they don't do the same thing with their dogs?!

I had a similar problem. I have a solution that is somewhat time consuming but worked for me. Try not feeding your dog until much after normal feeding time. If you feed twice a day maybe just skip the 2nd meal altogether. When your dog is good and hungry tell her to sit. There should be no rambunctiousness in the dog when she is sitting. She should be very calm and you should not be talking at all through the feeding except for saying the sit command. Feed her slowly 1 kibble at a time until her meal is done. Once she is done eating, release her however you normally do from the sit command. I would do this a minimum of 7 days straight yourself, then have your grandson do the same for at least 7 days, 1 feed a day. Once she realizes that you and your grandson are her only food source she should appreciate you better. If you are using canned food it gets messy. Put a teaspoonful at a time in your hand and feed her by hand. Good luck.

That’s not what he meant at all. I talk to my dog as I go about our day but when he’s attached to a leash beside me I use clear, concise commands. Not a barrage of words like the first woman. Considering he’s a rotty x Doberman that clocks in at 47 kg and I’ve never had a problem, he doesn’t pull, walks right beside me, sits the minute I tell him to, I think I’ll keep doing exactly what I’m doing.

This is the attitude that ruins dogs. Dogs aren't people. They don't think like we do. They don't process the world like we do. Just like a child, your dog needs structure and routine. They need to be set up in a way that allows them to be successful. This doesn't mean they're stupid. You can accomplish all of this while still pushing your dog to think for itself and learn new things.
